Covering the Sahara Desert With Solar Panels

What would happen of we cover the Sahara desert with solar panels. Continuously rising global warming and increased emissions in energy generation makes us wonder if there is a more sustainable way to power the world.Solar energy could be our best bet to reduce the damage.

How much does it cost to do so? To build all the panels, replace them, protect them from desert animals? How do you transfer the energy to the rest of the world? Would the affected African countries say it's okay with them?

Valid points my friend..These are the things that would need to be adressed if someone decides to take up a project like this.

Lots to consider. Consider frequency and duration of Sand storms as they block sunlight from getting through. Monetary and environmental cost of generating and importing material, generating housing for workers (especially if this is in the middle of no where in the desert). Long term considerations - how will the solar panels be "dusted off" after a sand storm and/or dig them out when they are buried meters deep, and by whom? Sand storms change the entire topography of the desert to be nearly unrecognizable. Perhaps building them higher will prevent them from being buried but then how will they get cleaned? Hydraulic system to raise and lower for cleaning? Also requires materials and humans for maintenance. Theoretically a great idea but there is a lot to consider.
