I vote yes to more BYL videos. I’m debating if I should start level 0 with my 4.5 year old now or wait a year. We will be doing our own reading/science and math but I like the around the world aspect of it. I can’t decide 🤷🏼♀️
I see that BYL uses History Quest and Real Science Odyssey so it seems that they overlap. You are not the only one that has complained about All About Spelling. I will look at your other videos for math recommendations.
We use Math U See almost exclusively, and it’s perfect for our needs! I wouldn’t completely rule out AAS, by the way. It was a major flop for my independent and easily bored daughter, but it turns out my son actually does well with it. He has been using it with me for a couple of weeks, and I think it’s a good fit for him because he loves one-on-one time with me and playing with the letter tiles.
@@RegularSecularMama Seems to me that Right Start Math and Math U See are relatively similar. I am speculating, but I think that Math U See is more popular, being included in Book Shark and Sonlight along with other packages, because it is less expensive. Would you agree with this? Did the price have much to do with your choice of Math U See?
I like the look of Right Start Math too, but we haven’t tried it. I started with MUS way back in the beginning because a friend recommended it, and we never saw a reason to switch. We did try supplementing with Beast Academy a little bit this past year. It was fun at first, but they quickly lost interest in it. I would gladly do the online version of BA for fun/supplement if I had decent internet, but we aren’t keeping the books. As for cost, I think MUS is pretty reasonable. If you keep the teacher materials for subsequent kids, it’s about $45 for new student books each year.
We love RSO as well! Have done the Life Science with both my kids and Physics with my older one. It's so easy to implement but such fun labs and activities. Very impressed!
Funny enough, I think it might be working better for my son for some of the same reasons why it didn’t work for my daughter. Go figure! Time will tell, though.
It’s funny you say this because I starting taking it apart too and ended up deciding I like it better as is! I now use a post it flag for each subject, so when we are a little “ahead/behind” in one subject or book I can keep track :)
@@jessriffel Great idea! If my kids weren’t so into BOTH world and American history, I’d stick to level 5 as it’s written. Gotta follow their lead though 🙄😂
Hi! Thanks for the reviews and love your channel! Can you share a flip through of the real science odyssey? I didn’t see one on your channel (sorry if I missed it!) but I would love to see more info especially since you have used so many levels and can speak about it with so much experience!
My channel is still fairly young, so I’m working my way through tons of video ideas. I’d love to flip through RSO! Is there a certain subject that I should do first (Life 1, Astronomy 1, etc)?
@@RegularSecularMama I love your new channel! Thank you for sharing! I think maybe the order you went in for teaching RSO? It would be great to see how you progressed and why it went so well for you! Similar to your awesome detailed discussion of MCT and all the levels and books. :)
We LOVE BYL! We are combining BYL1 with the science from year 2 this year. I'd love to see more BYL videos. Just found you recently and your videos have been so helpful.
We will be starting Pandia Press History Quest - Early Times, and their Life science. With their Astronomy, and Earth & Environment - are they designed to be used in the same year? Or one per year?
They are both shorter than a year, but if you did both as scheduled they would last longer than a typical 36 weeks. I recommend checking out the sample from Pandia Press that will have the schedule in it. I think we took two years, partly because we were in the middle of a big move and took it slow.
I'm thinking of using Build Your Library next year. She has History Quest as the History spine for Level 1 and 2, but then switches over to Story of the World for Level 3. Not sure why. And I've never used either History curriculum. There is one History curriculum that uses Mine Craft and my kids love playing Mine Craft, so I was thinking of using that curriculum. I can't remember if it is History Quest or another Secular History program. Sorry, I can't think of the name of it at the moment. Anyway, I was trying to find other videos of the Build Your Library program and yours is one of the few I could find. Thanks!
You’re welcome! I think Curiosity Chronicles is the one you’re thinking of? I don’t have experience with that one though, so I’m not positive. BYL is set up on the classical 4-year history cycle, and HQ is going to basically do World History in 3 years and 1 year of U.S. History (Ancients, Middle Ages, U.S., then Modern). That’s why BYL levels 3 and 4 couldn’t use HQ.
We are absolutely loving RSO chemistry and earth and environment! We started with chemistry at the end of last year and my kids are really enjoying them! I'm looking forward to using their life and Astronomy programs as well!! Love the shirt by the, that's awesome 😊
I saw that Build Your Library uses the Real Science Oddysey books for the science portion-- is that how you are using it? Or are there separate lesson books that go with it that you are using? Thanks!
We had already used some RSO before trying BYL, so some of it we either already did or planned to do at another time. Some BYL levels use different science materials, too. That’s basically the reason we just kept plugging along with RSO as I’d already planned it.
BYL does incorporate things here and there alongside RSO for science, though. For example, BYL level 3 has a scientist research project scheduled at some point along with the regular science work.
Have you used science oddessy chemistry level 1? I am trying to find a good chemistry curriculum for unit study ( my family likes unit study approach) also I would love to hear more on build your library.
Yes, we are using Chemistry now actually! We are about 2/3 of the way through. We have really enjoyed it so far (it's also my favorite science, so there's that). It's just a tiny bit too easy for my 11 year old, but it gives an excellent foundation. More on Build Your Library coming soon! I have more video ideas than time to film/edit 😂
We just purchased MCT for this year for 6th grade for grammar. We are also using BYL. But we're doing level 7 and doing the zoology course for Science Emily Cook has laid out. Do you do the readers from MCT? I felt that part was going to be to much with BYL too.
I don’t do literature or readers at all with MCT. We probably will try to incorporate a classic or two later on, but we primarily pull books from BYL and it’s more than enough!
Thanks for this. I was really thinking about soing Build your Library with MCT but wasn’t sure if it was going to be too much but nice that see you enjoy both.
Yes to everything you said about AAS. That was our experience too. It wasn't paced well for my daughter and the way that AAL suggests interleaving spelling between reading levels did not work for us.
Spelling- I chose to talk about a spelling curricula for my least fav too, as my.daughter cried s lot! I've moved over to All About Spelling, hope we have better luck! :)
We’re going to start History Quest & RSO Life next week! I have been creating unit studies for science & history until now but I need something that is going to be less work for me to put together! I’m excited to see how it goes!
I wouldn’t say it’s a good supplemental program. If anything, it could be supplemented with something else? It’s an excellent framework though (and obviously I’m a big fan 😂)
What curriculum are you MOST excited to learn more about? 🤗
I would love to see videos about BYL!
I’ve been so on the fence about doing these because we don’t use it as written. I’ll try to work it in soon!

I wish I had found BYL sooner! I love the concept of Level 0 so much. Luckily we get a similar feel in Level 7, World Geography.
Oh I also wanted to mention that I have had the best luck with core knowledge. For some reason the ELA and science really gets my guys attention. ❤
That’s great to hear! I never looked much into it, but I hear wonderful things about it.

Thank you! ☺️
I like the sound of MCT will have to check it out. Thanks for sharing.
Of course! I have a couple of other videos on MCT if you want a closer look.
I agree with your pick of All About Spelling as least favorite. We also love AAR, but we never got into the All About Spelling curriculum.
Funny enough, I think it might be working better for my son for some of the same reasons why it didn’t work for my daughter. Go figure! Time will tell, though.
We love Build Your Library too!
I almost wish I didn’t dissect it so much when blending curricula! It’s set up so nicely by itself.

It is so interesting what everyone chooses and why. I love this.
I love your picks and your channel.
Thank you so much! ☺️
We use history quest with BYL because we really do not like SOTW.
Yes! I love that their are FB groups for BYL
I am so glad BYL updated levels 1 and 2 to use HQ instead of SOTW!
I really like your content! Please do more on build your library 📚
On it! 😆
I agree with your view on AAS. We love AAR but AAS was just a big fail for our family.
Interestingly enough, it seems to be helping my son! I mentioned it in this video: ruclips.net/video/IV2it3J0SxI/видео.html
We also felt like All About Spelling is just too slow. Glad to hear it isn't just us!

Wow another one with AAS on the list. This was great!
Thank you!
I thought build your library used The Story of the World? Or am I thinking of something different?
They did for levels 1-4, but she is working her way through updating all levels. Levels 1 and 2 now use History Quest 🙌🏻
HQ goes (or will go) from Ancients, to Early Modern, to U.S. History, to Modern History. So BYL decided to stick with SOTW for levels 3 and 4.
