As someone who never uses prefabs and downloadable models, it’s funny to hear one tip be learn how to model. It’s by far the most useful tool for 3D. Don’t get into environment art without knowing modeling!
Modeling is a super skill that u need to learn but dont say that people that cant model cant try doin environment scenes. 3D is more than modeling, even if u dont know how to model u need to know how to setup lights, tweak textures, etc.
@audio technika yes, basic modelling skills are important and beneficial to have. still, it's not always necessary to master every detail, especially when you're just beginning. for instance, if one aims to create a video featuring a car, it isn't mandatory for them to know how to model the car from scratch. instead, focusing on developing skills in composition, lighting, and animation might be a more efficient use of their time, as these skills can significantly impact the overall quality of their project. in a professional setting, it's about leveraging expertise and resources. for instance, a professional motion designer might be wasting valuable time and effort by trying to model a car, when they could potentially purchase a high-quality model made by a dedicated 3D modeller everyone has their own approach when it comes to learning and creating 3D art. there are various roles within the field and not everyone needs to be a master at everything. as long as they're producing quality work that they're proud of, and continually striving to improve and expand their skill set, that's what truly matters
We tend to use prefab models in the industry solely as a cost & time measure. If you need a ladder in real life, you go buy a ladder. You don't build your own ladder. But knowing how to build one, how the ladder works, why it works, what material you need it made from etc. So when it comes to a scene or environment that needs a cg ladder, we approach in the same way. Why spend 5-8 hours at $200/hour (agency rate, not an employee's hourly) to build a photoreal ladder that matches what we need, when we can spend $20-80 for a piece that an artist has created. We might adjust the mesh, we often retexture and build the shaders from scratch, but that artist put so much of their creative energy into creating that ladder that it would be absolutely foolish to create a ladder when theirs is available. Knowing how to model and texture is crucial, but knowing how to budget your time is equally as important.
I agree that true artist will know how to use all their tools. Ive usually just downloaded pre made models and used them for architecture. Honestly saved me a lot of time. But in the end i sometimes wish to make my own

everytime i sit blender down for a few days I stumble across one of your videos and get instantly motivated to hop back in! Very inspiring work, thanks for staying consistent with the great content! always looking forward to your videos and they've helped me level up my work tremendously!
Spent the entire video nodding in agreement with everything said here, been doing this for 4 years and i amazed how similar the conclusion we came to are. Love all your work.
i have been doing blender on and off for two years now, and lately i have found videos like this quite useful. of course there is always things to learn but a lot of stuff you have to find out yourself, and there isn't always a set way of doing things
I wish I could like this twice Max, I've been waiting for you to put out a course for a long time. You've been the artist making things that tick off all of my own personal boxes of both things I like to see as well as things I'd like to create (scale, light, life, brutalist architecture, futurism, ancient ruins, etc). I've been struggling with focus, inspiration, and motivation for months now, I think this might just be the thing that drags me out of that hole.
Hey Max, you inspire me a lot. I' genuinely shocked about how you started your 3d journey because i am currently in that exact same spot and had to go through the same thing. Thank you for all you do. -HappyNoodles
As someone that’s working on music production, everything you shared in your journey applies to mine as well. Success principles are always the same. Thanks for your insight and love the work you do!
Love your work man! Subbed now. Great point about lighting, keeping it simple. I was always intimidated by how to light a scene, but one day this guy I was working with in film said "Start with what you can't control and work up from there", and that made approaching lighting way easier for me, it makes it methodical, not just a creative choice. One approach based on that approach is to add in a HDRI and get it to look as good as possible, then use a light or two extra in the scene to highlight what's important or way too dark. I hope that helps someone who is struggling with lighting xD
Hey Max, been watching your videos for a long time now. You're a huge inspiration, and I love that you made that course available to us! Will definitely be checking it out
Amazing video, and thanks for taking the time to talk about your personal backstory in the beginning. It was worth every second and very inspirational!
Thank You so much for this. I started Blender last year and your videos have given me a big boost in creativity and speed. Was wondering if you would ever make a course. This is awesome. Thanks again.
Your work is very inspiring. Thank you for your good tips. I started as hobbyist, with time I became an environment artist/terrain modeler and I had the opportunity to work in projects for great studios. I can confirm what you said, time, passion and efforts can really make you become a good artist and earn some money. Now, even if I made my life choice, it was (and in some cases still is) a wonderful adventure.
Just out of curiosity, did you ever attend any college or courses to get that job or learn your skills? Or did you just do it on your own and use the work that you had already done to show your skills?
This is literally the moment I’ve been waiting for. Your work is exceptional and I’ve learned so much so quickly from all of your videos. I’ve never really been one to pay for courses and stuff because I’m stubborn and just want to learn it trial by fire style but I’m definitely gonna invest in yours.
I started learning blender when I was in exactly the same situation in life. I also mostly did environments. And look at me now! I've started freelancing and am earning from 3d. I couldn't have imagined these things happening 2 years ago.
My work quality improved over 500% since i started watching your videos.... ❤❤ And when you shared your past experiences u really felt connected.... Love your videos ❤❤🙌🙌
These tips help me so much with some of my work. Still have so much room for improvement and you have inspired me to keep practicing and practicing. Thank you!
My jaw litteraly dropped when you mentioned your course. You're a huge inspiration for me and have massively improved my 3D art. As soon as my exams are over I'm buying the course! Tbh you could charge double for it and i still think it would be the most valuable 3D course out there. Thanks for your amazing content.
Also this is beyond helpful and generous. I wish I had this, and I’ll definitely give back in a similar fashion because if I had these I’d have been more directed. A lot of time was spent on finding my bearings😂❤❤❤❤ Another tip with lights is to have a small group of lights that have been set with all the attention, while another group can be experimental and is dispensable can later be considered unnecessary and discarded so you don’t get carried away and make a mess.
I love all these and I’ve been waiting for you to start a course! I will definitely be buying it! I think you should make a skill share as well and do classes! You are very talented I’ve been looking into learning 3D for a while now. I’ve been on and off but couldn’t find the course that fits my style of art but yours dose thank you!
You have no idea how much this video and your journey fit with my 'life'. Literally the 2nd video I've watched with learning about Blender. I love photography, videography. My pc file system is completely organised into folders. I used to love having my own asset library with Cinema4D, but life got in the way. No money, mental health crap, dropped out of college, twice! Etc etc. I sit at my pc every day inbetween therapy sessions, playing fcukin angry birds or Anno 1800. That's literally all I do. So this video hasn't just made sense, it's also hit home. Yea, thank you :)
Stay motivated, invest time, get help for the things you can't do yourself, ... You did not just gave a blender tutorial, you gave a life tutorial. Thanks
This is really great, thanks. It's getting to the point where O see one of your images and think hey, that was probably Max Hay. There are very few people I can do that with. I am totally distracted with details and modeling and tools and game but I'm learning I really enjoy environment design.
You are the guy who got me into making environment renders. My laptop can not handle much geometry at this point but still I am trying to optimize my scenes as much as I can and your tutorials helps a lot. :)
great story. its amazing what "lazy" or "aimless" people can be capable of once they find their true passion. happened to me to. i was a good for nothing until I discovered filmmaking. it changed everything
As a 3d artist and an artist in general, I know that the only way to improve is to practice and as you mentioned in the video, seek help and guidance from already good artists such as you, so for me buying this course is a step in the right direction, it will help me learn new things, improve my perspective, and elevate my art. I will definitely buy it, your art is the most inspiring and eye-catching to me and I want to replicate it, adapt it, and improve it in my own way. Btw will you keep updating this course and continue adding to it? and one small note: I noticed that in most of your renders, you use people to give an essence of grandeur and scale, will you share where to get 3d people models from? either in the course or in general.
Okay, so I just found out, that you are the creator of my reference photos. You are a huge inspiration for me. Even your story is similar to mine exept that I don't have the experience you have. I'll be definetely checking out your course next month, as soon as I have money :)
This is amazing, and you do some amazing work🔥 I would love to do your course but bit high for me atm 😅 but will definitely save it for when I have the money💪 love from South Africa 🇿🇦 and keep up the great work and advice you share

If you have that much time in photography, your experience going into this would be very improved, nearly, unmatched! You know about the perfect angles. This is so key, and you have that skill down. Now you only need to learn more about the modelling process. You can do it. You can do it my friend!

Hi Max. Im just about getting started into doing proper scenes after modeling quite a few things. But i still am unable to render dark scene such as your tutorial for bonfire in dark forest type without getting many noises. I did increase the sampling but that took about an hour per frame (8gb vram my rig. Is there any other way to reducing the noises without increasing the render time too much? On a low sample 128, (noise threshold 0.5000) render time was 1min30 seconds, but after changing both to default sample and threshold to 0.0100 render took 1hr for a frame. Please do share some advice on how to get it at least a bit faster and less noisier.
I feel like you right now bro l but I'm stock on a 9 to 5 job but I'm trying learn blender and unreal engine because I don't wana work for a moving company the rest of my life this video was very helpful.

Omg finally someone understands the struggle lol. Every time I watch a tutorial I have to taken into consideration what my MacBook will handle 😭😭😭
@@ciarawaggoner3748 Exactly. Recently I have been experimenting with vegetation & trees in my scenes and my Laptop can not take it anymore. 😂
@@xDaShaanx there are ways to optimize vegetation and fauna. Look into some tricks. Render the scene only or try different techniques
You have a pretty amazing future ahead of you! Many opportunities coming your way Max. Love your positivity. See you in Class soon teacher 🙂
Thanks for this video, just what i needed to hear!
