I think part of the reason why some modern romcoms dont compare is because the side characters (the best friends, parents, co-workers etc) have such NPC energy. Like the writes put absolutely no effort into making these characters. I felt that way about all the side characters from "Anyone But You". Glenn Powell's characters bestie was so random and the two girls that were getting married fell flat for me too. Bea's parents were kinda mean to her and very meddlesome and that was never really resolved, they just suddenly realised they were wrong by themselves and apologised like characters from a video game that pop up give exposition and then disappear.
To some extent. Plenty of the old and good ones had very NPC side friends. Sleepless in Seattle definitely has that, some with How to Lose a Guy in 10 Days. I think the difference though is usually the dialogue. The dialogue in older ones feels really charming and vulnerable and pithy. The dialogue today feels like it's trying to relate to online conversations and the is fairly shallow.
@@LeapThroughTheSky I also think that the acting was stronger in older rom coms. Like Katheryn Hahn is really good in How To Lose A Guy in 10 Days. Her character felt like a real person even she doesn’t have much screen time.

I think the emergence of the Adam Sandler and Judd Apatow MALE audience romcom and the focus on YA adventure/fantasy movies for young female audiences contributed very significantly to the fall of the rom-com in the 2010’s!! It’s almost like the genders of the genre audiences switched and that became a new and surprising avenue that movie studios wanted to explore and profit from!
I'm so ready for a rebirth of romcoms!! Actual romcoms and not romantic dramas or even romantic tragedies being falsely called romcoms when they'll leave you heartbroken and not enthused by the magic of love.

honestly i think one of the best places to get lots of rom coms is in asian dramas, like theyre a longer experience but lots of them are so fun and have so much heart!!
I wonder how romcoms will evolve with the rise of "get that bag gurl", "situationships", "catch flights not feelings" culture I feel like a lot of people are ashamed of love, distrustful / hurt by love (myself included even though love is one of my strongest values), I wonder what that will mean for the romcom industry
onscreen chemistry is also a VERY important factor not only in romcoms but in movies or tv shows with romantic subplots, because if it doesn’t click between both actors it won’t work. sure there are still some onscreen pairs that i can count with my fingers that have pretty chemistry onscreen but it doesn’t feel as prevalent anymore as it was back in the 90’s or so
I think another reason why people are more inclined to see an action/fantasy/scifi movie (or one with standout visual direction) in the cinema as opposed to a rom com is because they’re just more visually complex and it feels like you’re getting your money’s worth. I can watch a movie where the plot is the main attraction on a smaller screen and get the full effect, but there are so many action movies that are really fun on a big screen because of the effects, but fall hilariously flat on a small screen. I feel like whenever times are getting darker, light-hearted content becomes more popular. The early/mid 2000s was the last golden era of romcoms. Why? Post 9/11, Iraq war/war against te**o*ism, the world felt so dark, people needed an escape. Now, 20 years later, post-pandemic with terrible wars all around the world - Ukraine, Israel/Palestine, the fear of nuclear wars,... people crave light-hearted content again. Those dark, gritty movies and TV series that picture post-apocalyptic worlds that were all the rage before 2020... just hit too close to home for a lot of people now. One word to sum up what I meant - escapism.
Here in Asia, we eat romcoms for breakfast, lunch, and dinner lol. It's confusing for me to see that people say romcom is dead when it is everywhere where I am.

Love that someone is talking about romcoms! I know you touched upon this, but I think an issue with the change of romcom consumption is that there is an oversaturation of romcoms on streaming services with similar storylines or vibes, so it's hard to ever feel the magic of the classics.
All romcom lovers need to watch the Bollywood movie Jab We Met, it's the perfect romcom. Two non-toxic, funny, charismatic leads, a banger soundtrack and a deconstruction of the manic pixie dream girl trope at that.

I have been waiting for this video since you mentioned Anyone But You in the podcast Jordan! went to see it on valentines day - I really liked it but you're right Unwritten definitely did the heavy lifting. Amazing video as always :)
I watched Anyone But You with my boyfriend and I spent the entire duration of the film whispering to him about how Bea's bras and bikini tops fit her SO atrociously. As a big chested lady I know about needing support and she had NONE. The scene at the beginning where she runs into the cafe and she's jiggling about all over the place was so egregious I legit got sympathy pains. If I ever have to watch something where a woman's bra band is riding up at her shoulder blades again, I am throwing myself in the Thames!!!

I personally don't watch Hollywood romcoms because they've exhausted themselves. And I'm so tired of watching the same straight love story that I can't associate myself with. I enjoyed Rye Lane quite a lot because of its fresh approach, but I go to Heartstopper, Sex Education and Young Royals for something that speaks to me.
I put notifications on for your vids but i didn't get one so rude of my phone. I've been binge-watching your videos recently, so I was pumped when i saw there was a new one. Rom coms in the 2010s i feel like were used to show your favorite celebrities in a more “relatable” way but they ended up being written in a highly annoying way making me hate the celebrities. And they always seemed to be around some type of “modern” hook up romance and the “cool girl” trope which i absolutely dreaded

The flutter in my heart every time Unwritten played during this video!!! 29:37 is that EXACT feeling
I just watched Valentine’s Day the other day and had a fun little giggle so I’m shocked by the Valentine’s Day slander 😭
As usual, awesome video ! I can't stop laughing at your Gary Marshall rant and the ending 😭😭😭
YES please please please do a video on parody films, as a 2000’s kid I was OBSESSED with parody films like vampires suck etc
i think crazy rich asians and book club 1 and 2 are my only fav modern romcoms. i loveee early 90s and 2000s rom coms!! i haven’t found anything that lives up to those 3 movies yet😭 edit: i loved to all the boys as well!! i rewatch it with my grandma every year
I personally don't watch Hollywood romcoms because they've exhausted themselves. And I'm so tired of watching the same straight love story that I can't associate myself with. I enjoyed Rye Lane quite a lot because of its fresh approach, but I go to Heartstopper, Sex Education and Young Royals for something that speaks to me.
a MASSIVE yes to the parody movies video!
I put notifications on for your vids but i didn't get one so rude of my phone.
I've been binge-watching your videos recently, so I was pumped when i saw there was a new one. The first video of yours that I watched was "Bama Rush" (I keep saying it in an American accent like you did in the video 🤣🤣). Your videos have really inspired to limit my consumption of fast fashion. I love when you discuss films and shows in your videos too. This latest video was ace, and ur Saltburn video is one of faves too. I feel like ur keeping me in the know about tiktok a little since i uninstalled it.
I read Scott Meslow’s entire book a year or two ago and it was really good! Love that you referenced it and then expanded on more current romcom trends. Also lmao me too about succession 👁️👁️
Yes!! Please do a parody movie video - they where everywhere when I was a teen and then disappeared entirely and it feels like they were a feve dream 😂
Loved the video Jordan! I love rom-coms so much! Can you please do a video on the rise and fall of coming of age movies ❤
JORDAN!!!!! i got so excited when i saw that you posteddddd
First of all, love your videos! Secondly, I’m currently working on a script for a Shakespearean inspired rom com about Greek rush and your sorority rush video was immensely helpful for my research!!
Fun! Please share when it's finished😍
Yes pleaseeeee parody video video!!! Also i can’t think about the Garry Marshall holiday movies without remembering the 30 rock parody called MLK day
I’m honestly so in love with your videos
omg i literally just came home from watching anyone but you!! I can't wait to hear your thoughts
Popping in mid-watch to say YES PLS DO A VIDEO ON PARODY MOVIES 🤩🤩🤩
was waiting for this video with baited breath after you talked about it on the podcast - so worth the wait! love hearing you talk about movies
Loved the video! I'd love to see a video on the parody film era :)
Many many thanks for getting me through all this paperwork ❤
hearing u tear into valentines day was so funny considering it used to b my favorite movie lmaoo along with new years eve i watched them over and over when i was younger but i can see how others would find it boring theres like no plot just following these random ppl around if i watched them for the first time now i dont think i'd love them as much
28:05 I only watched the second trailer but I have to agree Olivia's song fit perfectly.
i loved this video! i really enjoy romcoms and appreciated ur video on them :) also note that cinemas are also not accessible for a lot of folks, myself included, due to the lack of automatic, quality captions (you can ask for a device for captions, but that is Not It lol). ALSO also would love to watch a video about parody videos like movie 43, not another teen movie, etc
Jordan I love your video essays! Definitely could watch you review classic movie tropes with that bubbly fun energy 🎉❤
Jordan i love this video and also your energy in this video is so fun!!
not the Gary Marshall memoriam hahhahha
Jordan,
Firstly I want to thank you for keeping me educated in very fun and diverse moments and subjects, your videos are A-M-A-Z-I-N-G. I have loved you since 50k, really.
Next, I wanted to say you are reminding me a LOT of Chappel Roan, which you'll probably know by know.
Hope this comment gets to you,
XOXO, Yas
Jordan! I always love your video essays!!! You knock it out of the park!
Your energy is infectious! I love York channel 🥰🥰🥰
so glad you posted this!! ive seen anyone but you thrice i love that movie and im so excited to hear your take on it!
Oooh may I ask- did you pay to see ABY in the cinema? Can you describe what about that movie was so engaging for you?
Rom coms in the 2010s i feel like were used to show your favorite celebrities in a more “relatable” way but they ended up being written in a highly annoying way making me hate the celebrities. And they always seemed to be around some type of “modern” hook up romance and the “cool girl” trope which i absolutely dreaded
Care to elaborate? I feel like you're describing the ~5 big ensemble romcoms that came out during that era but I'm not sure of what other 2010s decade films you're describing
omg i've never been this early!! so glad i found you from your hell's kitchen video of all things LMAOOO love this account girlie, keep slaying the youtube game 😌💅✨
So interested in a parody movie video as well. What a weird time that was lol and it went all the way from like RUclips videos to full budget films
Glad to hear someone talk positively about Love Actually again! I feel like recently all I hear is people bashing it that it’s too cheesy, problematic and how Richard Curtis’s movies have an overly romanticized and sanitized view of the UK. Maybe Love Actually is all those things but it’s still a top tier romcom and Christmas movie.
It was problematic tho , valid criticisms that I didn’t see when I was young and watching it 😭 Andrew Lincoln’s move in on his best friends girl with a kind of stalker ish vibe that we let it go cuz he’s so gorgeous
@@tonystonem9614 like I said it is problematic in places but it’s still a classic.
would looooove a parody movie video 💕 also my recent fave romcoms are I want you back and palm springs
Jordan’s laugh just brightened my gloomy day! 💖
the w**dy all*n face blurring?? you're so real for that
The lost city with Sandra bullock is an amazing romcom in my opinion
The first half was definitely amazing
I liked that one, it was a little confusing. But if you took the romantic parts out there would still be a storyline.
set the table with the fine china, jordan's made a video on rom-coms (love you jordan
the amount of times she explained things through vibes 😂😂😅 i love it!!
Yayyyy, my favorite time, Jordan Time!!
I would like to see a vid on parody movies!!! 🖐🏽 The scary movies and the hungry games and the twilight one are some of my favs
Yessssss Jordan, QUEEN, do a video on parody movies please! I still watch Scary Movie 3 because it’s just the greatest of all the parody movies! So glad you included a clip of it 😂
love you! great video! omg! the MOVIE/TALKIE comment! you re so right about variety and diversity, liked that about anyone but you
You and ModernGurlz are so in sync 👌👌👌👌
Literally came to watch Teresa’s video right after finishing ModernGurlz
Such a good video thank u!! You look amazing also
YES we need a parody movie video! Vampires suck is MY Roman Empire
i’m so embarrassed to admit that i liked leap year and new years (valentines day’s sibling movie)-
