Creation, Early Man, and Evolution | According to Modern Holy Fathers

  • Hear over a dozen modern Orthodox Holy Fathers teach about the beginnings of God’s creation and the theory of evolution. This collection of teachings is specifically from Orthodox Holy Fathers of the 19th and 20th centuries. By no means is this meant to deemphasize the earlier Holy Fathers in any way; it is simply meant to highlight Fathers of our times who were familiar with the “enlightenment” of modern man, bound up with atheism and evolutionary theory. While their focus was on a true and authentic understanding of the origins of man and creation, and this apart from and beyond humanist theories like evolution, they nonetheless offered an Orthodox appraisal of evolution and other modern theories in order to guard the Faithful against soul-destroying heresy.
I encourage you to read the early Fathers and gain their understanding of Genesis and creation, which stands firmly on its own and which was not ignorant of the truth about creation. Just as Moses was a prophet not only of the future, but of the past, the early Patristic writers were also inspired by the same Spirit to perceive reality as Moses did.
Lastly, this recording is not meant to stir up further debates between “creation vs evolution” and “science vs religion.” These binary discussions are often fruitless and miss the point. What this recording aims to show is that not only do Orthodox Saints regard the theory of evolution as false and incompatible with Orthodoxy, as well as notions of theistic evolution (since “by man came death” -1 Cor 15, verse 21), but that their vision of Creation is not a reaction to the theory of evolution, rather it is enlightened by the Holy Spirit and retains fundamental presuppositions that allow for a truly God-inspired understanding.
Wrestle with these words. They are spoken by men illumined by God, and can help lead a humble man to the Kingdom of Heaven.
    00:00 - Introduction
00:38 - Fr. Seraphim Rose, Hieromonk of Platina, California (+1982) - Basic presuppositions for knowledge of creation and early man.
04:33 - St. Ignatius Brianchaninov, Bishop of the Caucasus and Stavropol (+1867) - The state of creation before the Fall of Adam.
06:55 - St. Hilarion (Troitsky), Hieromartyr and Archbishop of Verey (+1929) - The Church’s view leads to humility, the secular view leads to pride.
10:38 - St. Nikolai (Velimirovic), Bishop of Zica (+1956) - “Death is Unnatural”
13:32 - St. Justin (Popovic) of Celije (+1979) - How man and the rest of creation are inseparable. When man fell, all of creation fell.
15:22 - St. Ambrose of Optina (+1891) - “Don’t believe at face value all kinds of nonsense…”
15:46 - St. John of Kronstadt (+1908) - True knowledge and the over-educated.
16:49 - St. Vladimir, Hieromartyr and Metropolitan of Kiev and Gallich (+1918) - Do not listen to teachings of unbelief for they “promise you nothing but despair and an inconsolable life.”
18:44 - St. Theophan the Recluse, Bishop of Tambov (+1894) - Evolution is anathema, along with other secular Western philosophies, and only a pure nous can accurately contemplate divine reality.
29:19 - St. Barsanuphius of Optina (+1913) - The moral ramifications of evolutionist philosophy.
30:05 - St. Nectarios, Metropolitan of Pentapolis and Wonderworker of Aegina (+1920) - “Without the acceptance of revealed truth, man will remain an insoluble problem.”
31:42 - Fr. Seraphim Rose (+1982) - Knowledge of creation and early man can only be obtained by divine illumination. (Note: This essentially repeats his teaching from the beginning, but it is kept here since it is so key to our understanding.)
34:26 - St. Luke the Surgeon, Archbishop of Simferopol (+1961) - Evolutionary theory is not only contradictory to the Scripture, but to nature itself.
35:54 - St. Sophrony (Sakharov) the Athonite (+1993) - The absurdity of evolutionary theory.
36:57 - St. Paisios of Mount Athos (+1994) - Monkeys are far from humans; evolutionary theory is blasphemy.
41:31 - St. Justin (Popovic) of Celije (+1979) - His letter to a theology student asking about evolution in which he focuses on the impact of evolution on the Orthodoxy doctrine of salvation.
46:35 - Fr. Seraphim Rose (+1982) - Brief overview of the keys to the Patristic understanding.
52:44 - Hymns from Vigil of the Sunday of Forgiveness, The Casting Out of Adam from Paradise
54:33 - Hymn from the Feast of the Elevation of the Holy Cross
The majority of these texts can be found in “Genesis, Creation, and Early Man” by Fr. Seraphim Rose, published by St. Herman’s Press.
This channel is dedicated to sharing the prayers, hymns, teachings, and service texts of the Eastern Orthodox Church. Glory to Jesus Christ!

St Theophan the Recluse was, as his name suggests, a monk out of touch with the body of the Church. He is celebrated for his asceticism, certainly not for his attacks on reason and science. Seraphim Rose, in trying to defend himself from accusations from members of the Orthodox Church, misrepresents Orthodoxy and his editor who wrote the preface to his Creationist claims does even worse. The publication of this book does nothing but damage the image of Orthodoxy in America.

Thank you for this. As a thinking adult Christian, I never accepted Atheism, Naturalism or Scientism, all implicit and unprovable (and untenable) in what passes for “science” of origins these days, but Young Earth Creationism and literal 24-hour days have seemed dubious to me as interpretations of Genesis. I have always considered the gospel (the Incarnation) and salvation the central issues of the the Faith and reconciling modern observations from real science and the Creation narratives and aspects of cosmological theories a secondary issue. Now I am Orthodox, there is the added wisdom of the Fathers, both early and contemporary to appreciate and consider, but these also require humility and growing discernment to interpret.
At one point, on the fossil record not supporting evolutionary theory, Francis Collins, Head of the NIH and the human genome project and professing Christian wrote that all the transitions missing from the fossil record are mapped in human DNA. With recent events cementing the extent and reality of the massive corruption of him, his cronies and the agencies they head (and the real nature of the “god” they serve), his assertions carry no weight of credibility for me whatsoever!

The last 4 generations of biology text books had a reference to the 'similarity of fetus' theology (and it is a FAITH based theology) which was recently shown to be purely fiction by Earnst Haeckel.
    This is literally fiction:
"In biology, abiogenesis, or informally the origin of life (OoL), is the natural process by which life has arisen from non-living matter, such as simple organic compounds. While the details of this process are still unknown, the prevailing scientific hypothesis is that the transition from non-living to living entities was not a single event, but an evolutionary process of increasing complexity"

Thank you for making this video. This is a very important issue for all of us as Orthodox Christians. We cannot embrace the philosophies of evolution/uniformitarianism as it is a dangerous and non-Biblical lie, which would pervert our Orthodox Christian children and converts to Orthodoxy away from the True Church, and into a sinful way of living. The Holy Fathers of the Orthodox Church, from St. John Chrysostom to Fr. Seraphim Rose have always taught a literal 24-hour, six day creation (Hexameron). However, it is true we don't know how long Adam and Eve were in the Garden of Eden. But, the earth still isn't millions of years old.
It is also true that we should beware of Creationist ministries such as Answers in Genesis, Creation Science Evangelism, and Living Waters because they are shady capitalist Protestant Ministers that are seeking to make a profit, and want to make a mockery of the Holy Bible with an "Evangelical Walt Disney world". They also mix the scientific truth of creation with nonsense like ice ages, eohippus, and fossil fuels.
We have plenty of scientific evidence of Intelligent Design by The Holy Trinity and a Great Flood. From the Hiatus Layer with it's Alluvial deposits, the fact that 75% of the earth's surface is sedimentary rock, the lack of transitional forms in the fossil record and the non-existence of a geologic column, the Mandel-Brot Structure, and that all eight blood types go back to one man and one woman who had intercourse.
As for the dinosaurs, it is true that about 46% of dragons mentioned in accounts and depictions, look and sound like dinosaurs, pterosaurs, plesiosaurs and other marine reptiles; and other extinct reptiles, with 55% of dragons looking and sounding like demons taking a hideous form to frighten people. I also have seen a lot of depictions of extinct mammals like giant sloths, woolly mammoths, and glyptodons from American Indians in the New World. So this is all proof that God created these creatures along with Adam and Eve, not prehistoric creatures that lived millions of years ago. However, nobody is stupid for disbelieving or believing in dinosaurs.

I simply mean that scientific tests have shown that the majority of oil deposits come from abiotic materials. There are some theories about how oil is naturally produced, but no one knows for sure how it is made.
That's not to say that there aren't oil deposits that come from crushed zooplankton and microscopic creatures (biotic sources) that were crushed during the great flood. There are indeed.
Rockefeller created the myth of fossil fuels and how scarce it is in order to drive up the price of oil, charging extra, and claiming exclusive rights to lands bubbling with oil pits granted to them by the government.
There was a retired oil engineer who testified on the abiotic origins of oil and the fossil fuel myth on an interview.
However, the trolls that work for the government took off the video of that interview just like they took off all the pictures and videos of Israeli war crimes and atrocities when they destroyed Father Nathanael Kapner's real zionist news website.
That's not to say that we shouldn't try to find an eco-friendly fuel system like Nikola Tesla's Towers or Dr. Shultz's garbage powered vehicles, but the Jews and Freemasons who run the oil companies use the fossil fuel myth to raise the price of oil anytime they want.

Treating our Saints and Holly Fathers as if they, human beings, were omniscient beings is a mistake fruit not only of ignorance, but of human pride and arrogance as well. You are raising them at the level of semi-gods. God's creation is like an open book that he 'wrote' himself, without human intermediaries, a book that he show us with the possibility to read it little by little with the gift of reason. The Holy Fathers and our Saints showed us the path of Orthodox spirituality, the path to theosis. But it is a an irrational mistake to treat them as omniscient creatures that knew exactly how God performed his creation when God's creation actually shows us that they were wrong. They had their own limitations as any human being. They were not perfect. And we love them more because of that. That they were wrong about scientific knowledge should not be a problem to anyone who has a true strong faith. There is a big difference between true faith and fundamentalism.

    • @OrthodoxWisdom

Why do you assume the Holy Fathers were wrong about such things, especially when there is overwhelming consensus on this matter amongst them? Who are we to stand in judgment of their unified witness on this matter for two thousand years? Furthermore, how does one accept evolution and embrace that death came before the fall, if that is what you accept. "By man came death" (1 Cor 15:21) is a vital tenant in this topic. Additionally, as the saints teach, and which St. Symeon the New Theologian and Fr. Seraphim Rose make abundantly clear, we cannot learn about the nature of the world before the fall by studying the world after the fall since the effects of sin are so great (see Romans 8:20-23).

I guess this whole problem with evolution and creation is that you have to distinguish between the scientific theory of evolution and the atheistic philosophy that was wrongly based on it. If we don't understand what are the basis and the boundaries of science we will draw wrong conclusions. Genesis is not a scientific book using a scientific mindset and vocabulary. That is the error of protestant short time creationism.

Evolution by observation leads to differentiation of species as what happens when isolated groups of creatures lose some amount of genetic diversity as their small group does not contain all of the original 'information' of the created kinds. When Darwin observed this in his travels, particularly to the Galapagos Islands, genetics was unknown. The small differences in creatures on the various islands was due to a 'loss of information' not a (mysterious) increase in information. Small groups of creatures can diversify from the original group in just a few generations. There is no need for an 'old earth' to reconcile the diversity of creatures we observe.
Breeds can show us much, if we only breed Chihuahuas, we will never get a wolf or a Great Dane, we will only got Chihuahuas.
Interestingly, there have been over 100 instances of soft tissues found in dinosaur bones. How these tissues have remained pliable, and relatively unchanged, is difficult to determine if the bones were but a few thousand years old, and is beyond explanation for an age of nearly one hundred million years old.

Except for some modern Fathers trying to proselytise the naive, the ancient Fathers had no issue with evolution, nor did anyone else in society. I find it somewhat distasteful personally as an Orthodox Christian, that some modern Fathers do not try to be objective but in order to proselytise naive Priotestant Americans present the literal interpretation of the story of creation from the Book of Genesis as an accepted Orthodox belief. It is a Protestant belief and more specifically an American Protestant belief. Some Russian Orthodox Christians had an issue with science because of their persecution in the days of Communism, allegedly in the name of progress, materialism, science and other such communist propaganda. That is a recent development. It is not the traditional Orthodox view.

Can you name any Orthodox Saint, especially one who lived after Darwin, who embraced evolutionary theory?
Furthermore, the vast majority of saints quoted in this video had little to no contact with Protestants. It was mostly Orthodox Christians who had been influenced by the West and the modern secular theories that came to these saints and asked them to address the issue. If you listen closely to the content in this video, you’ll see that.

@@OrthodoxWisdom - The Patriarch of Constantinople wrote to congratulate Charles Darwin for his "compelling theory" as he called it, after the publication of the Origin of the Species, stating only that it needs to be clarified how humans evolved from other animals, which Charles Darwin attempted to do in a subsequent book he wrote, titled the Descent of Man.

So no matter what the contemporary speculative mechanistic encumbrances present to opposing viewpoints, they always win based on their confessional claims that their Zealousness is always unbiased and neutral in a vacuum of unequivocal fair arbitration of fact

The ancient fathers knew enough about evolution not to have a problem with it. St Gregory of Nyssa who presided over the wording of the Nicene Creed wrote in favour of the theory of evolution. The Nicene Creed, the three Hierarchs and the other Fathers are clearly against the literal interpretation of the Book of Genesis (where e.g. God was a monad, not a trinity).

Forgive me but you have not read these Fathers closely enough. Off the top of my head I can recall St. Basil speaking over and again about the instantaneous creation of the various things according to each day as we see in scripture, including Adam and Eve. He even says that each day of creation was 24 hours! I know the Genesis book by Fr. Seraphim Rose isn’t back in print yet, but if you can find a copy or a pdf you’ll see an abundance of references to the teachings of these fathers. Evolutionary theory had no place in their inspired worldview.

@@OrthodoxWisdom - I responded to your comment but I cannot find my response.
So as for all to understand that God created the world unbounded by time it is said that in the Arche (in the beginning or in the first principle), He created.
      St Basil Hexameron
Unbounded by time means not in days or weeks or months. It means God creates outside time, not affected by time. St Basil goes over the days of the story of creation, because that is his subject in these writings, first saying that the first day must be of an indeterminate duration, coming as it is between eternity and the second day. Of the next 5 he says we must assume they were of 24 hour duration, because he cannot verify it one way or another as we can today. However, in other passages he gives an interpretation in accordance with Christian belief and the more developed scientific understanding of his time, as well as common sense. The earth is not flat but round. The firmament is not one sheath but encompasses the independent orbits of the planets. The lights affixed onto the firmament are the stars, not candles. Earth is not simply earth but contains all the elements, including air, water and heat/fire (he gives examples). The waters above are not above the firmament but a reference to the clouds that bring rain. And so on. Above all St Basil finds the Holy Trinity where there is literally only one God. After all the Old Testament by and in itself is the holy text of the religion of Judaism not of Christianity. Regarding Evolution, some of the early Fathers made direct references to the theories of Anaximander. St Gregory of Nyssa summarises the theory as it stood at his time attributing it to God's energies. Orthodox Christianity is not Protestantism under another name, reading blindly some text thinking you understand something. The Fathers of the Church were rational thinkers.

    Truth = Important
Jesus = I am the truth
Truth = Genesis is not a science textbook
The truth for us all, is that we honour our Lord by accepting the very objectively clear truth, that this planet, and the life on it, is not thousands, but thousands of millions of years old, because Scripture and Scientific observations (the book of nature) are not in conflict, and are, in fact, two valid approaches for receving... Truth.
Wake up! ; ) Modern genetics has proved the relationship between all living creatures: and not just that of having the same characteristics due to having the same Creator, but because common descent - to one degree or another - is a reality.
We are spiritually unique, but we are biologically mammals: a microcosm that is somewhere (due to Adam's short lived illumination and infancy when he fell from the process of growth into the Divine likeness) between brute instinctive beast and angel x
    But sons in the Son!
    Glory

God established One Church (Matthew 24), and we are to be as One, as He and the Father are One. There is no 'invisible' church. The Book of Acts shows the first Ecumenical Council, which is guided by the Apostles (which are Bishops), and continues to today with the 9 ecumenical councils of the Orthodox Church. You have no GROUND nor BASIS nor AUTHORITY to re-define what the early Christians wrote by Christ, God Himself, into scripture, and passed on as tradition. Their is one Church, and the subsequent schisms and heresies show their fruit in the psychosis of the west.
Man as God's creation - by St. John Damascene
God brought into existence mental essence, by which I mean, angels and all the heavenly orders. For these clearly have a mental and incorporeal nature; "incorporeal" I mean in comparison with the denseness of matter. For the Deity alone in reality is immaterial and incorporeal. But further He created in the same way sensible essence, that is heaven and earth and the intermediate region; and so He created both the kind of being that is of His own nature (for the nature that has to do with reason is related to God, and apprehensible by mind alone), and the kind which, inasmuch as it clearly falls under the province of the senses, is separated from Him by the greatest interval. And it was also fit that there should be a mixture of both kinds of being, as a token of still greater wisdom and of the opulence of the Divine expenditure as regards natures, as Gregorius, the expounder of God's being and ways, puts it, and to be a sort of connecting link between the visible and invisible natures. And by the word "fit" I mean, simply that it was an evidence of the Creator's will, for that will is the law and ordinance most meet, and no one will say to his Maker, "Why hast Thou so fashioned me?" For the potter is able at his will to make vessels of various patterns out of his clay, as a proof of his own wisdom.
