Love your tutorials. I purchased these brushes several years ago. But due to unfortunate events happening in my life I stopped painting. Now I’m excited to get busy again. Beautiful painting! You’ve inspired me! Thank you!
Just found you, thus Ron Hanson. It literally takes my breath away. Just emerging from my beginnings to THIS so it appears. Thank you for this beauty, LIGHT.
Joe, thank you again. Getting more excited for brushes to arrive. What are the seven colors Ron favors? I can see my traditional palette isn't going to work well with these brushes so will set one up on butcher's tray. (rescued from garage so it is authentic)
Ult blue, Payne’s grey, alizarin crimson, lemon yellow, light red, burnt umber, raw sienna. After his skies book he added cerulean and Prussian blue and burnt sienna.
A beautiful piece of work done in minutes. It was a pleasure to watch you paint and it has inspired me to pick up the brushes again after decades of not painting, Thanks.
I’m somewhat new to watercolor and after watching your video, along with some other lose painters, I need to learn to let it go after laying down my paint! I really like this painting......it’s so pretty!
What kind of wizardry is this?! It’s mesmerising. It all starts off looking chaotic and then suddenly it all makes beautiful sense. I love, love, love that sky and the way that light appears. Inspirational. Thanks so much. 🧙♂️
Thank you! After 30 years of painting in watercolors and many failed attempts with using different hake brushes, I have purchased a set of Ranson hake brushes. Just watching demo’s while I wait for them to arrive. I’m really trying to loosening up and branch out into new ways of painting. I have invested in an insane collection of professional brushes over the years, not much room in my large studio for more brushes but, I’m excited to experiment with these simple brushes! Not sure if I will utilize them with portraits, lol.
Portraits will be tough but I’ve seen it done. The big brush fast and loose approach for me is very enjoyable. I can use most any large brush but the RR is my favorite.
Wonderful painting Joe, I love the sky and forground in particular, lovely to see you at work, and very brave to show the blooper at the end, it did make me laugh, thanks for posting, what a wonderful, relaxing hobby we have x
Lovely loose painting with a restricted palette, less is more. I follow Stephen Cronin here in the UK who is also a Ron Hanson fan! Great demonstration.
Joe, thanks for showing how you mix your paints on your pallet. It looks like it is new. Do you clean your pallet before each painting? I certainly have gained a lot of experience from your videos as using the hake brush is a new technique for me. Thanks again, Roger
I don’t clean it necessarily but I will use my brush and clean it up to get a grey color from old mixes. For my color wells I spray with clean water and drain.
I enjoyed your demonstration. I have a request. I’m a little older and my eyes aren’t as good as they once were... it’s difficult for me to see because its so dark. Would it be possible to brighten your studio up? I hope so because I really enjoyed your teaching style. Thanks again.
So nice! Watching this while on board a bus on my way home. I’m raring to paint one similar to this. I’m happy to know you’re using 140 lbs Fabriano. That’s the kind I have at home.
Thank you very much Joe for sharing, it’s so interesting, I’ll try it. I got the set of these brushes for 2 years, but not really dare to paint a landscape 🤨 😅 You win a subscribe 🤣 Stay healthy and safe 🕊 😇 💕
What are Ron’s 7 colors? I just got his Big Brush Watercolor but haven’t read much. I began watercolor at the beginning of the pandemic in the US but don’t practice as much as I could. However, I find watching instructional videos on RUclips sort of a meditation in itself.
Hello Joe, I’ve just started watercolours (3 months) and really like the Ron Ranson style. I’ve tried to emulate your painting but with poor success. I don’t have a hake brush - I’m just using a wash brush so wondering if this is the problem. Also, for the foreground, do the colours need to be straight from the tube to get the strength? Thanks in advance. PS I’m on the RR FB group but until I get something approaching reasonable I’m afraid to upload it!
Hello Andrew! Don’t be intimidated to post in the group we have all skill levels there and it’s a very encouraging group! The hake brush, for me, is key to this style. If you watch artists like Alan Owen, he uses the larger mops. To answer your question, as I move down the page my paint volume increases and my use of water decreases. I do use paint straight but the hake always has some moisture on it. Once you get a hake you will get how the moisture is as the hake holds a lot of water. Thanks for watching!
Thanks for watching. We’ve had several discussions in our group and I’ve mentioned the ways to pronounce it in other videos. Because Ron Ranson himself and others on you tube have pronounced it as “Hake” most of us say it that way. And as a big Hockey fan it’s less confusing lol.
Appreciate the feedback. This was one of my earlier videos and I was trying to show the Ron Ranson technique. My Father liked it and he enjoyed it till he sadly passed away last year.
Absolutely amazing!
Thank you
Love the painting and your tutorials, thankyou so much, happy painting.
The sky is so beautifull !

Same here...
Hi everyone thank you for all the views on this video I hope I make Ron Ranson proud. This is an older video I have learned much since.

Beautiful painting Joe. I love how it becomes 3 dimensional
Good instructions well done. You really helped me. I’m an old woman you made me happy.
Gina TexasGirl I’m glad I was able to help! Thank you for watching and commenting.
Maybe use a fine brush for a bit, at the end, for details in the foreground. The light on the water and in the sky is beautiful.
Thanks, mainly showing the hake brush here for viewers interested in the Ron Ranson technique
Great painting Joe, and super demo. Thanks for sharing. Hope you do more.
Hannah Clements Thanks I try to do one a week time permitting

Yes, I had to put that in but I did not want to spoil the flow of the video itself so I did edit. :)
That's really pretty! Great explanation too. Thanks.

Joe Menza thank for your reply Joe👍
Andrew Barber no problem anytime. I’m happy to help along the way.
Joe, what type of pallet do you use?
It varies honestly. I use several travel palettes, trays and I even use a scrap piece of paper.
Ooooppppss at the end😂😂😂👍🏼👍🏼
Magnifique!!!!! Please could some one give me the name of blue used....
Ultramarine blue cotman
This style is for me! Was that on cold press paper? What make do you prefer? Subscribed.
Lana S hi Lana! I typically use 140 lb Fabriano studio or canson xl both cold press and not super expensive. Thanks for the sub!
Joe, thanks, I have some Canson paper.
Thank you for sharing this technique! (PS: It's pronounced "Hockey")
