I had the honor of singing this at Baylor's All-State Choral Camp this year. It truly has to be my favorite songs for All-State this year. I especially love the way the text marries the music so beautifully.
This is absolutely gorgeous! I wish I could've found this before All-State but I'm glad that this is one of our songs. I loved it at camp, and I still love it now! I get chills every time that I hear it. Thank you for composing this piece, you compose beautiful music!
I've listened, performed, and dissected this song a MILLION times, and it still gives me goosebumps every time I hear it. David Childs, you are simply one of the best composer of our generation. Never quit! Never let your immense talent go to waste!!!
Still listening in 2020. It's pieces of music like this that made me fall in love with choir, and made me want to pursue a career in composing. Thank you David Childs for sharing your gifts.
David Childs, I really appreciate you responding to me. Every now and then I like to listen to this song especially when I need resolve or when I'm stressed. Good music is my relief.
David Childs, you of all people in my opinion have the most moving arrangements. Love your music, love choir, everything. This piece has so much meaning.
Listening to this 6 years after I actually sung this back in high school... yet I still remember every word, ever breath, every phrase. Not only that but I can hear the voices I had heard during those 4 years of high school choir..man I really miss choir, my friends, competing. TMEA was hella fun and an amazing experience for me.. will never forget the amazing pieces given to us during those four year of TMEA.. this one was particularly my favorite though. 😊♥️
Hi Amber - I am so moved that this text moved you so. Isn't it an incredible piece of poetry? Please thank your conductor for introducing this piece to you and your fellow students. Wishing you peace and nothing but the very best. David Childs.
Man, David Childs is a genius! I was in duncanville men's choir and we did one of his pieces for NACDA and he did clinician work for us. Some of the best professional imput I've heard, plus his German diction is intimidatingly good!
Absolutely beautiful! I believe this is one of the songs for the Texas All-Sate Choir this year! I sincerely hope so, if we compete with this song it will probably be my favorite piece. Thank you :D
I'm listening to this gorgeous piece and reminiscing about performing it at the ACDA Michigan conference last fall...such a breathtaking piece and such an amazing experience!!!
Hi Emily: thank you so much for your kind compliment! I am privileged and honored to be able to share something of value with the greater community. Thank you also for being a champion of choral music.
The poem is by Sara Teasdale. Day, you have bruised and beaten me, As rain beats down the bright, proud sea, Beaten my body, bruised my soul, Left me nothing lovely or whole -- Yet I have wrested a gift from you, Day that dies in dusky blue: For suddenly over the factories I saw a moon in the cloudy seas -- A wisp of beauty all alone In a world as hard and gray as stone -- Oh who could be bitter and want to die When a maiden moon wakes up in the sky? Good luck with the music!
Absolutely beautiful song to listen and sing. I love every part of it, but my favorite section is definitely the, "In a world as hard and gray as stone." The tenor part is so pretty and with every other voice part it's just incredible to sing and express. Thank you for such a beautiful piece of music that I thoroughly enjoy singing :)
This is still the most moving piece of music I have ever had the pleasure of performing. I'm going to get a tattoo to commemorate my 2 years clean in august, and it will have the line, "Oh who could be bitter and want to die, when a maiden moon wakes up in the sky?" This song meant so much to me my senior year of high school and means even more to me today.
This is truly beautiful and stirring, in fact, its my favorite piece out of the All State Packet. I always favor the slow pieces. :') All State 2012-2013
I love how a lot of people here are singing this for TMEA. XD Me too~ I'm doing soprano 1 though. This song is my second favorite. It's so pretty~ Thanks for putting that DO to DO octave in there btw. That's like my favorite part. :D
It's funny that someone would describe this work as being the offspring of two other composers when all three have very distinct and different styles and are all contemporaries of each other. I have never heard a Stroope piece that sounds like a Whitacre piece. In the same way, I have never heard a piece by Dr. Childs and thought "this sounds like Stroope or Whitacre." I love the text, as I do with most of Teasdale's works. Similarly, I appreciate and enjoy the detail in this piece. Bravo, Dr.!
I don't usually respond to comments, but I just had to write something in response to this one! I'm still chuckling at your choice of words. Ha! Thank you for appreciating my music; such positive feedback encourages us composers to continue writing. Sincerely, David N. Childs.
@serenadefire1323 All I am saying is that if you took some aspects from whitacre and some from Stroope and mashed then somehow in perfect perfect harmony, which Dr. Childs has done, it would sound like this. I truly adore Dr. Child's work, and I was not trying to often anyone in anyway.
I wish my region would have auditioned this peace. We suck. Region choir would have had nobody in it if they had decided to do that. Can't Pre Area auditions!
I find it ironic though hightly appropriate to use those two brilliant composers to define another magnificent composers work because Stroope, Whitacre, and now Childs have had pieces chosen for the Texas All State process in the past two years, including this beautiful piece by Childs, as you put it the offspring of those particular composers.

Thank you Kevin - I am very flattered and humbled. So glad you have enjoyed my music. Please keep sharing the joy of singing!
Still listening in 2020. It's pieces of music like this that made me fall in love with choir, and made me want to pursue a career in composing. Thank you David Childs for sharing your gifts.
Hello Raymond: Thank you so much for your very nice and flattering comment. I am truly grateful.
Still one of my favorite All-State songs
Hey Kevin - Thanks so much for your comment! It made my day. Wishing you all the very best. David Childs.
David Childs, I really appreciate you responding to me. Every now and then I like to listen to this song especially when I need resolve or when I'm stressed. Good music is my relief.
In a world as hard and grey as stone.
This is a Texas All State Choir song and I'm so excited to sing this! I looove it!!!
David Childs, you of all people in my opinion have the most moving arrangements. Love your music, love choir, everything. This piece has so much meaning.

Not only the music, the choir is excellent! Congratulations!
I truly hope David N. Childs could watch us at the All-State Mixed Choir Concert in February! It would be an honor!
This piece, I swear it can never get as beautiful as this. This piece is just so gorgeous.
We're singing this in my choir, and today we broke the poem down to its deepest meanings and I almost cried. The text painting gives me chills.

Such an amazing song, I get chills that run down my spine every time I sing this.

My favorite song out of all of the TMEA pieces this year.
Hi Heather!!!!!!!!!
Absolutely beautiful song to listen and sing. I love every part of it, but my favorite section is definitely the, "In a world as hard and gray as stone."
