- Louisiana Republicans take the lead from Florida's GOP by going after progressive district attorneys.
Members of a Louisiana Senate committee questioned Orleans Parish District Attorney Jason Williams Thursday over the work of a civil rights division that Williams says helps restore trust in a long-troubled New Orleans justice system.
Republican lawmakers criticized Williams over the motives and reasoning behind moves by his office to back the release of many long-serving prisoners.
Jason Williams spoke with Roland Martin about Republicans brazen attack.

Black people are almost 32% of the Louisiana population, but they need to vote like it by actually voting.
after everything we went through we should be the first at the voting booths.
I'll never understand it...
The fact that they fought so hard to keep us from voting should tell everyone how important it is to vote.
C’mon Louisiana, Vote Blue!

European here. The more I hear about these shenanigans the less likely I become to ever travel to America and spend my money there. Wishing you strength and endurance to continue on the path to justice.
America sucks bad now. Why go there of all places. Stolen guns everywhere, murder epidemic, human trafficking job of the month, cops assaulting innocent, federal agents stealing cash from travelers in airports. And you want to come here and most of us wish we could get out ??
This country has become a big hand out ,where you will see that every minority feels they are owed something literally .
What there not even sure if none the less care about is
()) what does the government owes people
Thank you, Angel,😔🥲
Injustice for one is injustice for all. Keep up the good work. God is with you. Right is might.
Jason is trying to do the right thing
Thanks for shining a light on this Roland. Louisiana has a criminal justice system that is based on housing and holding inmates for their own benefit. Also mention how corrupt his predecessor was, current and former judge Leon Cannizaro.
Similar to Kamala Harris holding inmates past their release dates🤔🤔
@@funkyfresh6978I am for prison reform and not for, for profit; as it is presently. Does this issue speak to you as if she has reverse racism and hates the black part of her identity? People of color do not have a monopoly on crime. Neither do I agree with making statements of generalization that are based on statistics. And as we know, you should get time for committing crime. Unfortunately there are an increasing number of people that have been and still remain to be wrongfully arrested and prosecuted. People tend to lean up against her being known to be tough on crime, yet complain about the criminal associations that we condone and the high crime rates. We can't serve two ways of life or have it both ways along the middle of the fence.
@@deborahsmith8925 1st of all, there is no "black" part of her. Secondly I only hear about her being tough on crime when it's dealing with black people.
@@funkyfresh6978 Kamala Harris has nothing to do with Louisiana racism . Racism has been rampant in Louisiana.More inmates means more money in Louisiana..(Black Inmates )This is why my Family no longer lives there . . So don’t deflect so that BP will vote for racist Trump. We know y’all playbook. They don’t care if you are guilty or not. It’s about lining the Politicians pockets by filling the jails in Louisiana. ( especially New Orleans) .
Excellent commentary Roland Martin and Company keep fighting the good fight getting in to good trouble like John Lewis said😊
Black people in Mississippi, South Carolina, Louisiana, Arkansas, Alabama, Tennessee .......need to wake up and use their political power to force changes
Excuse me u forgot about Georgia, some times when me my family go to vote we’re the only blacks In the room
Georgia is changing because of the influx of blacks from the north, east and west. Without those black migrating to Georgia there's no way Georgia has 2 Democratic Senators
And don’t Forget about Florida
Yeah, vote for Trump
@@mr.independent3501 Those states are already run by Republican governments and are ranked the poorest in every livable metric education, Healthcare

Yeah on How to keep us down and out.
They dont want this unit. This system is so corrupt
Our people please get out and VOTE in every State VOTE VOTE BLUE UP AND DOWN BALLOT 💙🇺🇲🗳️
We voted Blue in California. The Democrats have a Super Majority yet the Blue Black Caucus never submitted the Bill for Reparation to the Blue Governor.

Voting 🔵 is what got these ninjas in the hole to begin with
Thank you for this topic. It's only 1 piece of the pie as the Louisiana Republican PROJECT 2024 rolls on. Voting matters,
They just don’t want him to run for mayor!
Wwho would not want to right the wrong
Guilty and those folk with ulterior motives. LA still uses Napoleon law😢
Here in Los Angeles, many people have a problem with George Gascon, and dislike some of his progressive methods of dealing with crime. I may not agree with every policy, but I am awaiting the day when the hardliners come up with workable way to deal with the system’s inequalities. Racism is baked into law enforcement and the prison system, and many and mostly black men have been railroaded.
Rebecca Ashley Goodrich is a racist DA who set me up on felony charges. In Los Angeles.
I agree with you WHOLEHEARTEDLY.
Being in the office is hard have your cards in line. So u can pass bills on your own GET them ready HARRIS ❤❤❤ let's go.
I was born in Louisiana, my entire maternal family is there. Growing up I NEVER heard talk of voting. I didn’t know anything about until I moved to Ohio. I was 12 years old, I was old enough to know why it was important to vote 🗳️.
They make it difficult at every turn for black people to gain equal footing. We take 100 steps forward and they push us 1000 steps backward.
We just have to keep kicking down the effing doors -VP Harria.
That why we need to vote Blue, and get these sick republican out of office so sad
It was Joe Bidden that sponsored all of the crime bills and Bill Clinton signed them into law. I guess it’s ok for black people to get screwed as long as it’s the Democrats. Make it make sense please?
⚜⚜⚜⚜⚜stay💪🏾 jason🤎 he trying to clean up this mess 🙅🏾♀
Louisiana is the most profitable prison enterprise in the world too. Fallow the money my people. Who is profiting from these prison complexes and dismantle it. expose these people and their conflict of interests.
Joe Biden sponsor all of those crime bills in the 80s and 90s to lock our black men up. I guess its ok along as it is a Democrat screwing us.
THE POLITICIANS PROFIT OFF OF PRISON SYSTEMS THEY OWN THEM THATS WHY THEY INCARCERATE MORE BLACKS TO TAKE US BACK TO SLAVERY SINCE WERE NOT IN THE FIELDS...WAKE UP BLACK PEOPLE LETS GET OUR OWN NATION.WE WILL NEVER PROSPER AMONG THEM...IM SORRY WE CANNOT ITS NOT MEANT TO BE....
The other part of this is if black ppl are convicted of a crime you have a record.
The the recidivism rate is cyclical. You have a record easier to convict over and over again
Amen
Louisiana: the school to prison pipeline state!
😢😢😢😢
How about trying to get Corey Miller home to his family and kids because he is also an innocent person in Angola State Penitentiary. Free C ✊🏾
Wow...smh...
Red States, Geez..
Only the heritage foundation Russian can still do this 💵 pay off these peoples in the republican party and people who work in these city and state and court house and police & sheriff department.
I live in New Orleans. I trust Jason Williams and we have a horrible republican governor. I knew it would be bad when they had Election Day on an away saints game. We didn’t even get a run off. Now- we really are a Tex-Arkarida state.
Vote the governor out. Your vote is your power. We can't sit back and be discouraged. We have to get up and vote no matter what. Don't let these evil, wick racist people keep you from using your power. It's time out for all of these shenanigans.
and don't forget how he didn't even have a debate and won the government seat!!!! Something horrible is going on in this country.
What’s so horrible about the governor
Time to take red states. Need to present project 2025 and show he plans to take away their rights. Vote blue 💙
Won't let me like this video
One day I hope we wake up to just us. We as a people are exhausted mentally. But God! Thanks for the great work.
He’s not lying that’s what’s going on here in Louisiana
What the HELL is the damn DOJ for? I understand why some Black people don't want to vote.
Private prisons, biggest prison population, used for labor they are making millions if not billions off prison labor.
Please tell me how much research is done before we decide to give our money to those who provide us with nothing more than song, dance and drinks. Approximately 175.000 attendees and $300 million to New Orleans for 30 years, and we still make it our mission to drink, sing and dance, smdh. The state offers nothing much to people of color, except mass incarceration and few economic programs. As long as we do the same thing nothing will change. Make them fight just as hard to get our money as they do to incarcerate black people. Shame on us, pick another damn state for 2025!!!
What is happening in New Orleans, happens all over the USA. I know of 2 cases like this right now. It's sad that a system would actually railroad an innocent individual. This ruin lives, I'm glad someone cares enough to do something about it.
Thanks brotha Ro! Great episode! Btw, loved the subtle smackdown of all the dummasses out there hyping a "glitch"! 🤣
They just want them to keep making money off of them they don’t care if they innocent or not
And I'm betting that at least some of the white students do not even have to take the exam and are "given'" a pass anyway. How much ya wanna bet?
Sorryazzhonks
But the system is not broken. It’s exactly how they want it.🤔
Americans JUST VOTE BLUE.
WHAT A SHAME HOW PEOPLE TREAT OTHER HUMAN BEINGS AND THINK THAT IS OK WE ARE ALL HUMAN BEINGS. 😢😢
Wow. The previous da used a dacron law 27 hundred times in one years.
Release ALL INNOCENT MEN
Cancel him now he does not speak for black folks
I was not aware that the New Orleans judicial system was experiencing such significant challenges. It is concerning that individuals are being incarcerated for minor offenses. I had the impression that New Orleans was known for its relaxed and celebratory atmosphere, particularly during Mardi Gras. I would have expected a more lenient approach to minor infractions.
This have to stop either they want the law equally or not God 😢😢😢😢😢😢help us
They need those bodies in prison
They need to take a look in the Louisiana State Racing Commission in New Orlean La. cause they been violating a lot of people civil rights especially black folks in the sport of horse racing 🏇🏽
People hope you here this for real.
Indiana is one too I pleaded to,20years in prison or 6 years probation? They knew i wasn't guilty, but I was ignorant of the laws so I got played 😢
Exactly
But Roland, if the person pleads, what’s to stop the DA from changing their mind in the so called plea deal.
What is wrong with Louisiana GOP??

Hi Roland have anyone heard about the young black man that was hung in North Carolina we need to talk about it.
Republicans judge, subjectively. Its based on emotions, feelings and opinions. Therefore you can move the goalpost to your favor. This is the world we live in.
Here in Hawaii a democratic state; of which native Hawaiians say is illegally occupied by the USA . We had a case turned over by the innocents project. The case was the murder of Dana Ireland. It occurred in the early 90’s . Now ‘23/ ‘24 dna has proven the case. Ok the wrongfully charged are free . But the actual perp ; who was questioned and released…& committed suicide . The victim was white. The wrongfully charged mostly white. Except in Hawaii “ local “ and the actual perp mixed probably Asian. And once again Hawaii is a big D democratic state. Thankfully dna can clear these crimes and procecute them. Hopefully these terrible crimes just stop.
O
Recall former Caddo Parish Sheriff, Steve Prator, complained that releasing prisoners with good behavior would eliminate a source of free labor. Who would cleamln patrol cars, buildings, etc.?
If a person is sitting in prison, and the evidence is there for them to be released and a politician won’t allow it, can that politician be sued?
Their can to be sued unreliable for reparations
Roland please shed light on people convicted by non unanimous jury verdicts in louisiana which has been ruled unconstitutional in Ramos v Louisiana. Oregon was the only other States allowing non unanimous jury verdicts which are Jim Crow juries there are close to a 1000 mostly black men and women unconstitutionally convicted under this law we are the only people in this country with non unanimous jury verdicts we need help educating people on this law and how to correct it!
My cousin's son has been in Louisiana prison sincevhe was 18yrs old. He transported drugs across state lines. Problems violated rules and got extended time. He still has to serve time in California. He is almost 50yrs old. They'll release him once he is too old and sick.
Sad and cruel. Corrupt politicians and government.
I’m so sorry! That is so heartless and cruel of them. They have murders that spend less time in prison!😢😢😢
It’s always going to be some 💩 in the game when it comes to us. But we better start sticking together as a people if we ever want to see real change & justice. Because together we stand, but divided we’ll always fall. 🤨🤨🤨

Here is the problem with Jason. The last two years, crime was out of control. Between the car jackers, the car break ins and murders, the crime rate landed New Orleans at the top on the worst crime list. The DA’s office was a revolving door for criminals, until he and his mother were car jacked. The Governor sent the state troopers and federal agencies who formed a coalition and the crime rate went down. The Governor only did this because of the upcoming Super Bowl and tourism, but Jason did not help crime at all. However Jason is correct in stating innocent people should not be in jail, but when you have released murders who commit more murders something is broken. Sorry Roland I love to expose Republicans, but this is not the case.
We Love our DA. Thank you for what you're doing for our city.
What goes around comes around
But they let trump stay free we know Y
Stop crying and whining already
@Roland you need to clear your name on what happened about a naked man
Oh no Roland Martin wants to pretend like that didn't happen
Wow. Black folks in Louisiana need to come together against their toranical government.
Show us the new laws new rules that are different for white lawyers and judges.. Ill wait.
It happened in Texas. Do your research.

No they won't do that they'll just be crying and whining all the time
@clairegazzillo6775 I agree I guess it's just that culture .Crying and whining and always a victim and no accountability.
Common sense tells you you cant be perfect on every case.....Just dont do crimes and dont go to prison
And when the person is innocent? Can your simple mind comprehend that?
EDIT: Funny thing is some of your past comments simp for Trump. So you don't even believe that "don't do crimes" BS you're yapping about. You just want it to apply to certain people. Pathetic
@@Lord_Bibulous no system is perfect
@@AmericanPride-k5n Of course not. But the system is called the *JUSTICE* system. So for prosecutors the goal should be to get justice, not a win. Which too many times we have seen has not been the case.
People who have not committed a crime gone to prison .
@rachellee5818 There's no perfect system I sure anyway you build it there's going to be some casualties
Woooooow
