    Back in the 80's I also had a 30 gallon long with 2 big angels and several other freshwater fish. I noticed that one of my angels was laying eggs on a piece of drift wood I had standing up in the tank. I didn't know what to do so they hatched and were quickly eaten by all the other fish. The next time she laid eggs I was ready for it. I had gone to the library and read up on what to do to raise the eggs. I removed the driftwood and put it into a ten gallon I had set up. When they hatched they just laid on the bottom of the tank wiggling, but when they started to swim I took a tiny dot of cooked egg yolk and squashed it in between my fingers and they ate that till they got big enough to eat brine shrimp. I was in my mid 20's when that happened. I just turned 60 and I still think about those fish and how fun it was to raise them! Now I have 3 little dogs that drive me crazy with their barking, but I sure do love them, as much as I loved those fish! lmao!

      I remember in the 80s that my step father got all excited when the angels laid eggs and he ran out and bought a divider. when he got home, the eggs were gone and we never did raise any angels. But it sparked a life long interest in me and I always wanted to raise angels. Successfully raising them in the 80s was quite the accomplishment!

    very organized and clean tanks
    at what age should I separate the babies from the parents

    • @FishyReview
      @FishyReview  3 года назад +3

      I move them when they're starting to grow their adult fins. I think the main thing is to consider the bio-load that dozens or hundreds of babies would create for the tank (and your breeding pair!). Also, the parents will want to breed again and could get aggressive to the fry after some time.

    How long will they raise the fry until you’ll have to remove them to avoid the parents eating them? I have a pair that’s on their 6th batch of eggs but they eat them not too long after and I’m being patient for them to figure out what to do, but once they get the hang of it I don’t want them to start eating the fry soon after aswell.

    • @FishyReview
      @FishyReview  2 года назад +1

      Good parents will never eat the fry but be sure to offer enough food! if you’re nervous about them being eaten then the best thing is to remove them as soon as they’re free swimming. If they’re eating the eggs, then maybe they’re not fertile or you have a pair that gets it wrong. In that case, move them to a 1 gallon or larger container with an air stone and methylene blue a few hours after they’re done laying.

    great video mine have had 3 lots of eggs with no luck they have now had another lot which are now in the wriggler stage fingers crossed they get to the swimming stage

      I hope it works for you! I had wrigglers for the first time since 2010 but they suddenly died. You would think I’d remember how to raise angelfish but then that happened. I have new wrigglers and a new batch of eggs so I’ll just keep going until I get swimmers.

      I’ve never had cories in the angel fry tanks but it’s possible. Angel fry sleep on the bottom of the tank and I’ve had problems with large mystery snails snacking on them overnight.

    My angelfish pair guarding the fries very nicely till now. Its been since 10 days after the fries became free swimming. Till when I can keep the parent and fry together? What it will do to the fries if the pair lay egg again

    • @FishyReview
      @FishyReview  Год назад

      If they have been free swimming for 10 days and didn't get eaten then that's great! I would probably separate them at this point. The pair may get territorial when they lay eggs again. Just be careful moving the fry. Make sure they move into the exact same water (temp, parameters, etc) or drip acclimate them to the new tank. At this size, they're very easy to shock and kill.

    How long do you keep fry with parents?

    • @FishyReview
      @FishyReview  8 месяцев назад

      It depends on the parents. If they’re really good parents that don’t eat them then maybe up to 2 weeks or so but the fry will start to pick at the parents too much the longer you wait. For most pairs I would move the parents to another tank as soon as the fry are free swimming because that’s when the parents start to treat the kids like Cheetos.

    How many water changes do you do with the fry mate?

    • @FishyReview
      @FishyReview  2 года назад

      My preference is 50% of the water once a week. But that’s not always possible so I keep a big blob of Java moss in the tanks to help keep the water in better shape. really small fry are sensitive to temperature changes as well so it’s best if you can leave the tank alone for 2 weeks or so.

      @@FishyReview ahh ok. Thanks for your reply. Would established tank water work better than tap water?

    • @FishyReview
      @FishyReview  2 года назад +1

      I’ve always used tap water treated with Prime or Amquel. That will have less dissolved solids and pollutants than tank water. When I had the big fishroom, I had a 550 gallon holding tank where I could let the water reach room temp (80F) for a few days then I would treat the whole tank to remove chloramine and pump it into all my tanks.

    Hi, whenever i leave my angel babies with the parents, they always end up eating them or few days later my babies disappear. I also tried separating them in a different 10 gal tank, I tried the jar, the breeding box but my babies always end up dying within a week. My pair gave babies 5-7 times already but not a single success to grow them out. What should I do to save the babies? They just gave babies amd i just left the babies with the parents

    • @FishyReview
      @FishyReview  Год назад

      Some parents will always eat the fry. Some will stop eating them after 4 or 5 batches. And some seem to do better on the next batch after you've been pulling the eggs. The best way I know to raise them artificially is in a 6 quart container with 1 gallon of RO water and 10 drops of methylene blue. The water temp should be 80-82 degrees and have an airstone in there. I use a dropper to remove the dead ones and other junk. Once they are free swimming for a day, start feeding newly hatched baby brine shrimp and either move them to a cycled aquarium or put a cycled sponge filter in the container, which will get your a couple weeks of container time. I used to feed bbs 2x per day. I have a batch like this right now and if they are successful, they will be the first batch that I've had in 12 years, since I took time away from angels.

      @@FishyReview thank you so much for your reply. I gave up hopes on them because they haven't gave eggs for months after their last batch, and today out of no where I saw 100s swimming around. I had no idea. The parents didnt seem to eat them but I'm scared they will in a day or two becuz that happened before and the parents end up eating them after few days they start swimming. I still left the babies with the parents. Right now I went to go check and the babies are all huddle/stuck all together on the glass wall. Shud I move the parents ? Or shud I keep them together. They are in a 20 gal right now.

      The angels with babies in this video were all good parents and didn’t eat the fry or eggs. Maybe they did the first few times, because that’s common. It’s been over 10 years so I don’t recall. I used to have a lot of good parents, and some bad ones.
