A 'Med Lock' is a game position in which the Axis player completely controls access to the Mediterranean, such that the Western player would need to conduct an amphibious invasion to retake it (so, the Axis player controls Gibralta, Egypt, and Kuwait, and, if they are not neutral, French North Africa and Turkey). It deprives the UK of several factories, gives a large strategic warfare bonus, and prevents landings in Italy or the Balkans. It is considered to be one of the markers of a particularly successful Axis opening and mid-game.
@@Lessons_from_the_front thanks. Do you not think Portugal is a chance to get landings done at this stage? Needs some luck and possibly some diversion? Or is it a low-probability suicide attack that's doomed to fail eventually? With the royal Navy its probably not too difficult to keep supplied but understand the luftwaffe can hit but they can also at Torch
@@philiptarry702 Portugal is usually always a Dieppe raid in the midgame (a landing that will fail consistently against concerted Axis effort). The ports are too spread out in the Iberian peninsula and the ground too difficult, it is relatively easy for Axis forces to bottle the landing up and then use the luftwaffe on the ports until the supply collapses. In the midgame successful landings can only really be made in Norway, Egypt, or Iraq, far enough to limit the Axis response and particularly the deployment of the luftwaffe. Dieppe raids can be useful, if they draw off significant Axis resources that would otherwise be usable against the USSR and Portugal can serve some purpose in that respect.
@@Lessons_from_the_front Makes sense, thanks. I find the game very "life-like" in that respect, the challenge of supply and shipping which the strategists at the time had to deal with.
what is a MedLOCK?
