    This is probably what the director of Your name fear the most. He didn’t want people to have too much expectations to his next works. He afraid that people will always compare the rest of his works with Your name.
    Once you make a masterpiece, people will expect another one from you later.

      But the only problem here is that it is a master piece it's good as your name, deep down people wanted to be like your name, that wanted to get the same close reaction like they did for your name but this is a whole new story so being so different and better at other parts it's obviously a master piece.

      Obed Carrillo really? He said that? I thought it ended perfectly. I loved how they were hesitant at first to ask their name but in the end both of them gathered their courage and finally asked their name. As someone who most likely will hesitate in a situation like that, that last scene was perfect.

    I dunno, but I felt more with Hodaka and Hina’s predicament than with Taki and Mitsuha’s. Hodaka running away from home, how it was his first great meal, how Hina and her brother are orphans at such a young age... everything felt so cruel just like how life is. Then there’s Suga who’s torn between acting on his empathy with Hodaka’s situation and his visiting rights to his daughter.
    Then that scene at the motel/hotel while three underage kids are so happy is also gut wrenching. More so when Hodaka thought “If there is a God in this world, please let us stay like this forever.” I felt the hopelessness of their situation.

    • @angelmendez-rivera351
      @angelmendez-rivera351 4 года назад +29

      Michelle Gaming It's not about it being a sequel or not. It's about the style. I watched the movie in the fan previews last week, and they showed an interview with Makoto Shinkai post credits, in which he admitted that Weathering With You is indeed highly influenced by Your Name. There are more similariries between these two movies than there are between any two. It's the same formula applied twice.
      But, with that being said, I strongly disagree with the idea that Weathering With You is worse than Your Name because of it being the same formula. The way I see it, there are a lot of things Weathering With You does better than Your Name. So, while you might say Your Name was good because it created a whole new formuka, Weathering With You is good because it improves the execution in that formula in many other ways. This movie does a better job at emphasizing the importance of the small talk and interactions between characters than Your Name does, for example. It's small optimizations like that make the movie so good. You can tell: Weathering with You is the culmination of the everything Makoto Shinkai has worked for in his life. And while it is true this movie is influenced by Your Name the most, you can see there are references to movies by Studio Ghibli as well, for instance. And he talked about this in his interview.

    • @taelongx
      @taelongx 4 года назад +12

      I watched Your Name last summer and totally forgot what the story was about besides the body swapping. I thought Weathering With You was amazing in theaters and I think it’s even more amazing when you try to analyze the theme of the movie. Besides the controlling the weather aspect of the movie, I think the main theme of the movie is that we live in a world that has a bunch of natural disasters that can impact our lives, and our lives may not be the best, but there is that someone who can bring sunshine to YOUR world. (A metaphor right here) Hodaka even says “who cares if we can’t see any sunshine? I want you more than any blue sky”

    • @angelmendez-rivera351
      @angelmendez-rivera351 4 года назад +8

      InfiniteZodiac That's a nice interpretation, but the movie also has a deeper message. When interviewed, Makoto Shinkai explained that this movie is about two things: sacrifice, and climate change. And it makes sense. In a way, humans are choosing to continue affecting the climate for the sake of not sacrificing their traditions and their "not-so-ecofriendly" habits. And Weathering With You is definitely all about. Hodaka chose a rainy Tokyo that would never see the sun again, all because he wanted Hina more. He sacrificed Tokyo over Hina. It's a childish sacrifice for the sake of love, but it's fitting for two star-crossed loving shamans, and it's especially fitting because they come to terms with the fact that, at the end of the day, they're still just children, a fact they had been running away from throughout the entirety of movie. Those things go way deeper than anything presented in Your Name. Your Name is an equally great movie, but one thing Weathering With You does have that Your Name doesn't is this big picture meaning that transcends animation itself. It's this conceptual impact that goes beyond the storytelling. That's why it's inaccurate to say Your Name's plot structure is identical to Weathering With You's.

    I honestly don’t think it was that much of a copy and paste. It had much more different elements added into it compared to Your Name. I find each character to be really good and was given almost the perfect amount of characterization. People should look at the smaller aspects of the film like characters, symbolism and etc. If the characters had extremely similar backgrounds to characters from Your Name I can get the argument but in this case I don’t believe it. This movie also focused on the setting of Tokyo rather than Tokyo and one other place. I can go on and on about how different the two films are. I feel as though people loved Your Name so much everyone’s gonna compare all of Makato’s work to it and not look at the actual in depths of what made the movie good. If you watched interviews he had different ideas that embraced Weathering with you compared to Your Name. He just went with the same concept he’s been doing but adds a twist and different character conflicts that make the film itself unique.

But, nevertheless, I disagree with what you said about both being "basically the same movie", because they're not. They're really different, actually. The story, the themes, the characters and their dynamics/interactions... With the exception of the animation, the art style, and being romances, these two movies are nothing alike.
    I completely understand that comparing Weathering with You with Your Name is inevitable, but we should also be fair with our criticisms and value films by its own merit, don't you thing? Besides, there are actually some things that this movie does better than Your Name.

      I agree it has similar concepts and follows the "boy meets girl and their lives change forever" trope, but that's pretty much every Shinkai movie LOL.
      I understand why people compare Weathering with You with Your Name, but I don't think it's completely fair to do so, because the director clearly wanted to tell a different story here. YN may have a higher emotional impact, but WwY is still engaging, heart-warming and beautifully animated, and overall it's a great film by its own merit.

      @@luisa3447 oh yeah anime movies are always snubbed. Regarding your comparison of the two, i really think Your Name is a better movie. It's completely narrative driven; you're watching a story.
      Silent Voice is excellent but it's entirely character driven. That's not a bad thing, but to develop that many characters, it takes time. I think Silent Voice would have been better as show, so it could take it's time with characters and flesh them out fully. The movie was great and I loved it, but it almost seemed like there was a lot left out. Which turns out to be true because i found out it was a manga first.

    Counterpoint: this movie actually builds on "Your Name." The central theme of that movie was about connections between people, how their time-lines intersect and diverge (not just Taki and Mitsuha, but their family and friends, and, in the latter's case, their ancestors).
    "Weathering with You"... Well, I think it makes more sense if you look at people and time as inter-related forces of nature. Ancient Norse mythology has this concept of "Wyrd," the tapestry of fate. It's composed of several layers, the bottom of which is those kinds of forces that can't be changed -- physical forces, the past. However, using things like the practice of Seithr (a shamanistic art involving weaving), you had limited power to manipulate strings of fate. (This idea about strings and their relationship to interconnectedness comes into "Your Name," too, with the art of kumihimo; not that there's any influence between the two, but I think it's kind of human nature to compare strings to connections). Here, time, death, and weather are all physical forces that the protagonists have to confront. But it's not just a one way thing: humans are affected by the weather, but also have the power to affect it in turn.

    "Almost the same movie, just replacing different super nature elements"? Sorry completely disagree. It's an inferior movie in comparison, sure. But saying it's "Almost the same movie"? You serious?
    Let's just take a look at a few simple plot points:
    First, in "Your Name" the two protagonists are forced into a situation together then start developing feeling for each other. In this movie it's not the case, the boy clearly had something ever since they first met in McDonalds.
    Second, in this movie the two protagonists actually have interactions and acknowledged they had some relationship before shit hits the fan.
    Third, the super nature elements: in "Your Name" the super nature element, or the god of Mitsuha's family Shrine is actually helping Takis ave her and the town from you know what. While the deity in "Weathering with You" is the source of the problem.
    And finally, the most difference part, the male protagonist's boss and his role in the story.
    I could go on into more details, but I think it's clear that saying it's "Almost the same movie" is not a fair criticism. I am not really that big fan of this movie, I never thought I'd be defending it like this lol. I think it has some structure problem and stupid moment.

      "Similar" and "Almost the same movie" are not the same. And yea, I agree with most of the similarity you point out here. But that's not what Christ's criticism is about, he's talking about the over all plot structure. Yet as I said above the plot structure has some notable difference that calling it a copy and paste of "Your Name" is not only unfair but also misleading.
      Hell, I'd say this film would benefit from actually copy and paste it’s plot structure from "Your Name", since my problem with this film is that I think it's structured poorly especially the third act.

    "Weathering With You" is a little dip in his career after the massive success of "Your Name", i feel he's getting the pressure to make "Your Name" 2.0 with this movie. I'd say this is on the same level as or a little bit better than "Voices of Distant Star".

      Katherine Black In my opinion, Weathering messes up the ending. Way too rushed. It feels like borderline deus ex machina to me. Everyone started helping him. Broke out of the police station with ease. When into the fantasy land and effortlessly grabbed the girl back to real like without even explaining what that was. Skips years of him attending high school. Like how am I supposed to accept this? This ending is way too rushed for this movie. All the slowness and maturity of the first half of the movie gets obliterated by the ending. That I can’t accept, and that’s why in my opinion this movie is worse than Your Name. If the movie could have some extra time for the ending then it would be at least well rounded.

    My thoughts on this movie are rather interesting. Like Your Name, I did love it, but it wasn’t quite as great as I was expecting it to be. And I do kind of agree now that the ending isn’t great. But the weak ending is overwhelmed by the amount of positive elements. For example, I loved Hodaka and Hina’s chemistry. They are so cute together. All in all, again, I did love this movie, but the trailer for this movie made it look even better. Oh well, this movie’s still better than anything Disney’s made recently.

    Just saw it in the theater. Indeed it was pretty similar to Your Name in a lot of ways (the structure, the 2 main characters, the music, etc, as mentioned in the video), but I think it's totally going in a different direction. The ending REALLY surprised me. Not in a way that there is a big twist at the end or anything like that. I won't say it's this kind of anime at all, instead the end sends a very strong message to the audience, I think it makes the whole thing quite powerful actually. The boldy ending is what brought some fresh air to me and made it something different than Your Name. It reminds me of one of my favourite author style, it's kind of always the same, I sometimes wonder why he even bothers to change his characters names and similar events happened in all his books, however, each one is about something different. You use the same ingredients (your own universe) but you end up cooking something different. However if I had to choose, I'd still prefer Your Name, it is just such a master piece.

    I personally was disappointed with the end of the story and the story itself. It just felt generic. Although, I do see there was some potential. When the story reached its climax, its turning point wasn't thought-provoking or some kind of emotional connection that really resonates with the viewer. However, the Animation was amazing. Personally, I felt as if the protagonist attempted suicide, there could have been a deeper message with the resolution. However, I did enjoy the movie, Animation/Visuals: 5/5 (time was definitely presented in the creation of each frame)----- Music/Sounds-: 3/5 (wasn't as present as it could have been)--- Story: 2/5 (Too Generic with little meaning)

    I agree with your critique. For me the movie set up a really interesting mythology involving conflicts between tradition and modernism, while many sequences implied that the main character is a "rain boy" himself. The 3rd act essentially scrapped all those themes, focusing on young love. "Fight for your love of life, even if heaven falls or even if it means pulling a gun at (possibly dirty) cops" sounds poignant, but also misguided. The issue is it does not give the core romance more depth, nor does it complete the thematic threads at the beginning of the movie. The "good ending" feels forced, unearned or empty. Funny thing is this ending is more fitting for Gurren Lagann as that anime is entirely about willing it hard enough to break through any metaphysical obstacles.

    As much as I've enjoyed Makoto Shinkai's movies I've always felt them to be ALMOST great. I did enjoy Your Name, and it's definitely been the closest of his attempts, I just can't help but feel like there's something missing. I'm excited to see this newest movie, as I feel he is polishing his craft more with every movie, but he just hasn't hit those highs I know he can hit with me personally yet.

    I disagree with this review, the core message of this anime is "if you mess with weather/climate the effects are going to be irreversible, which applies to what is happening in the real world of companies causing global warming for their immediate benefits. So we humans better not make an irreversible change!

    If only Weathering With You came out before Your Name, the popularity would be on par if not surpasses Your Name. The only major difference between these two movies are that the support characters in Weathering With You are more directly involved in MC’s growth than Your Name; and there are more mysteries in Your Name, making the story more exciting and tense. If I had to choose one movie, I would choose Your Name, just because of the tense feeling building up then releases all at once, making it very emotional.

    This is a deeply romantic movie. If you have ever loved someone so hard, you'll relate to this movie. The only downfall of this is it lacks conflicts (only focusing on romance) that's why many people thinks it's boring BUT I think the director really wanted to focus on that. On ramance. On how you can do anything for love. On how you can live with rain just for your sunshine to be with you.

    This movie is splendid. Makoto Shinkai's character design has immensely improved. I definitely prefer this movie to Your Name, maybe because this has more unmistakable signs of solipsism that generally makes a romantic movie even more romantic and interesting (hence more lingering afterglow). A must-watch for Makoto fans.
