I just realized that Blues Traveler played this song and called it Hook, which was a huge hit for them. Ian, great job as usual. You've got the best fiddle lessons on the net dude.
Ian does a great job playing this. If you're looking for the music, you can find it free online. My big beef with the purchased video is that Ian changes his bowing all the time - and the main reason I bought the video was to see how he does the slurs. That's not taught. The main thing you learn is ornamentation, which is pretty standard. If you don't read music, you could pick up the notes by watching him play. I really love the arrangement, but the video for purchase should have been better!
St. Louis to Ireland? Well hello from down in Jefferson City. Find job young man, I am very impressed with your interpretation of this fine old piece. As a baroque brass player, I'm very familiar with this and your version was delightful.
There is a popular legend that Eileen Ivers made this reel after the famous Pachelbel’s Canon. That is proven to be wrong. This tune was published as an untitled Hornpipe in a Scottish book around 1881-5, the book is "Kohler’s Violin Repository", and the original key for the tune is C. The tune has been part of the repertoire among Cape Breton fiddlers, where it is known as "Kohler’s Hornpipe", way before it was transcribed to D and popularized by Ivers as "Pachelbel’s Frolics". She obviously noticed its resemblance with Pachelbel’s piece and thought they would sound good together. If Kohler or whoever wrote the tune was influenced by Pachelbel’s Canon remains unknown.
I listening this to draw to and I keep snapping my pencil because I'm drawing in tune to the music. It's absolutley amazing! The music, not my drawing.
I liked the full lesson, but I wish that we had gotten the chance to play through the song (in it's entirety) with the slowed down version. I would have liked to do that several times at the end, as well as played the entire A section several times. It was only taught in chunks and never put together.
Hi Iain, love your playing. There's a very straightforward chord progression to back this from what I can hear is it possible you could put a link to it? If you have a chance at all and know a good one. Thanks a million no bother brother way.
Listened to a fella play this in Bangkok and it blew me away. Have been looking for it for 18 years. So delighted!!!
I could listen to Ian playing this the whole day, but I'm going to learn it instead! Many thanks for the great lessons...
