      Both having build in a multiplayer tab, has been the biggest win for me. It was a p. I. t. a to get them for older generations.
      For that reason my memories are connected to playing multiplayer games with friends (pre-online era multiplayer) especially those THQ WWF and WCW games. And the jump into 3D for some franchises made many games more interesting to me. Yes, the older Zelda games on NES and SNES have been great in their own way, but Zelda, Mario (Kart) and Metroid these games are far more superior for me.
      When it comes to shitstorming back then, I never ever cared about that and would call it "when our eyes first met" moments. The GameCube, Xbox and PS2 era in general for still one of the best, if not the best generation in concole gaming.
      Back to the expectations for The Wind Waker, I remember that I first have been disappointed when I saw on where the graphics design decision fell on. Maybe the one or other here remembers that there have been promo videos and snippets, where there have been showcased a much more different Zelda game.
      Soul Calibur on GameCube then was that game where I thought, this is how I wanted Link to look like. Took me years to give Windwaker a chance.
      BTW, I hope you had a great time with the bird family. 👍

      Like Miyamoto said back in the day "Gamecube is an evolution, not a revolution". Even though it was the technically better console, with a better controller and more mature software after years of experience developing 3D games, it just never hit as hard as N64. Mario 64 really was a watershed moment in gaming, that's when everything changed. Sure, there were 3D games before, but none which got so much right at the same time. It became the benchmark for all future games, the gold standard for years to come.

      For me, Ocarina of Time, Sonic Adventure 1st level, Crazy Taxi, Halo, GTA Vice City & GTA IV were the last ones to give that similar 'jaw drop can't believe this is real' feeling......but certainly I will never forget the 1st time finally getting my hands on a Nintendo 64 controller at the kiosk at Kay Bee Toys in Barkhamsted, Connecticut......footrace against the koopa.....I was nine years old.....absolutely magical......and then opening the box for the console on Christmas '96 after months of hoping (and being told by my mom that she wasn't able to get one) still gives me chills thinking about what a great moment that was

    Just wanted to say I appreciate the extra work you put in to capture games running natively on a CRT. The N64 analogue stick, when in good condition, is supposedly more precise than any modern analogue stick you'd find on any game controllers. However, the biggest problem with them is that they wear out a lot faster than modern control sticks as well, though it would still typically take a couple of years. They'd wear out so gradually that a lot of people wouldn't really notice how bad they got, and a lot of the bad reputation of N64 controllers is probably a result of people using ones which had worn out sticks.
    Thankfully, you can buy replacement parts for surprisingly cheap, though those parts will typically be a bit worse than the original sticks, and it can get really expensive if you want replacement parts that are of better quality than the original sticks. Speedrunners for games like Mario 64 strongly prefer the original type of analogue stick, which is a testament to how precise that control stick type really is.
    Considering that it was the first standard controller for a console with an analogue stick, it stands to reason that it was flawed. Calling the N64 controller bad would be like saying the model T is a bad car by pointing out how inferior it is to a modern car. It just doesn't make sense.

    • @lmk10000

  • @GhibliNova
    @GhibliNova 4 месяца назад +10

    I mentioned in a post but I'll retype here since this is the video if yall don't mind :)
    The GameCube was really the Super N64. It did the same thing the SNES did from the NES. The NES/N64 created staples in 2D/3D and the SNES/GCN refined those staples with better visuals and sound. Sure Zelda went from High Fantasy to Pirate Anime, but Final Fantasy went from High Fantasy to Steampunk Anime moving from the NES to the SNES. I don't think the Gamecube tried going a 'different' direction, They evolve just like every other company does, the only difference is Nintendo never moved away from having a focus on family friendly games, in an era where that was taboo for video games. So Nintendo never changed, everyone else did. :)

  • @Yipper64
    @Yipper64 4 месяца назад +6

    I would choose the N64. The gamecube is great but it kind of just feels like the middle step between the N64 and wii to me. Since the wii is basically a beefed up gamecube.
    There's something so iconic about the blocky graphics of the N64 that kind of again, makes the gamecube seem more transitionary to me than something that cuts above the N64.

    On paper if you compare game by game the GameCube wins. But it's hard to explain to people that didn't experience it how revolutionary the N64 was. And you can get a hint of this by comparing SNES and N64 games. We were finally no longer confined to the 2D plane, and man did it feel good. Remember just playing around the castle in Mario 64 and swimming. Remember the first time on Hyrule Field in Ocarina. Compare Star Fox to Star Fox 64. Damn. Our jaws were on the floor. Then we got a GameCube and...well...those graphics sure look nicer. Please.

    I never owned a N64, but my brothers and I had the Saturn and the PS, while I did play the N64 a few times at some friends at the time. Maybe it's because we were teens, we just found all these video games amazing, also PCs with Win 95/98 were just intriguing and did many things that were new to us, hey, can you write and print text, can you also play Time Commando and Duke Nukem 3D on this thing?
    I actually remember thinking how well we could control Mario with that analog stick, and we also played Goldeneye, even South Park and Bomberman 64. We were just happy kids.
    My heart goes to the Saturn, and the PS1 just kept on giving sequels and exclusives past the 00's. Even as early as 2003, consoles such as the NES, SMS, SNES and Mega Drive were really cool, we all played them and had lots of fun.
    During the early years of the 6th gen, we could only dream of getting a PS2 or GameCube, so we watched gaming channels and enjoyed what we could see.
    Today, people have a keyboard at their reach and they like to type what they don't enjoy in life.

    I never owned an N64 but I did own a GameCube, so I might be biased, but I feel that overall the GameCube as a complete experience holds up much better. That said, I respect that the N64 was a landmark platform in it's own right, even if playing the 3D games for the console now makes my eyes bleed I have to acknowledge that the number of polygons it could push, the four controller ports, and the killer line up of both in house and third party games were very impressive. The controller is and always was a mistake though, I respect that a lot of people have nostalgia for it and that back then no one was really sure how to make a controller that was good for both 2D and 3D games, but that thing is a monstrosity.
    I just wanna know who I should blame for making a wish with a monkey's paw that Nintendo's next console after the N64 would use optical media instead of cartridges. Nintendo said, "We're finally moving to optical media," then the finger of the paw curled, and the rest of the sentence was, "but our discs will be a weird format that's severely scaled back from standard discs," and the poor GameCube got the worst aspects of both cartridges and discs: substandard data capacity compared to other game discs AND slower than cartridges. The GameCube could have been so much more if only they had gone with a more standard optical media format.

    • @ladams391
      @ladams391 4 месяца назад

      @@hdroid18 Yep, I forgot to mention it in my first comment but I too have some nostalgia for the tiny discs, I remember I had a little zippered booklet case that came with the carrying case my parents got me to go with my GameCube and I thought it was so cool at the time that I could carry like thirty or forty full-sized games in the palm of my hand or a pocket. Not that I ever had that many games to put in it, but the idea felt so cool to my younger self. As I got older and learned more about the actual hardware and technical details of the console, though, I felt increasingly disappointed that Nintendo let their fear of piracy (which inevitably happened anyway because it literally always does) push them into a design decision that, in my opinion, was the greatest limiting factor of the GameCube hardware, especially considering it was the last console they've made to date that could compete on equal footing with the other consoles of its generation in terms of power.

      Same thing with the wii and wii. U which uses DVD and single layer blu-ray disc like tech. Instead of using HD DVD and dual layer blu-ray like disc. Nintendo was always behind media format for their consoles since the n64 and hardware with the wii.

    • @ladams391
      @ladams391 4 месяца назад

      @@maroon9273 As I understand it (and I haven't looked into it in quite a while so feel free to correct me if I'm verifiably wrong) the Wii U using what I like to call "diet BluRay" was mostly because of some kind of issue where Sony didn't want to play ball with the licensing to use real BluRay tech and tried to charge a ton, and Nintendo wasn't having it so they just created their own comparable format instead. Who knows if Sony actually were trying to overcharge, but I do have to respect the "Well in that case I'll just make my own" that Nintendo pulled, it always makes me chuckle to think about it. I've never particularly cared for the business practices of Nintendo or Sony so as far as I'm concerned they kinda deserve each other's nonsense (specifically the executives and other business types, I don't mean any disrespect to all the engineers and developers that actually work really hard to bring these systems to market).

    I have always thought the gamecube had a better library, basically being better sequels to the best n64 games, except for the 2 series where it arguably mattered most. Mario Sunshine and the Zeldas on gamecube always felt like a step down from their n64 counterparts to me, but everything else got better. F-Zero, Mario Party, Mario Sports, Mario Kart, and Smash Bros all improved. Add in games like Animal Crossing, Pikmin, Metroid Prime, Resident Evil, Chibi Robo, and Monkey Ball all help to make the GameCube library head and shoulders above the n64 overall to me.

  • @scalesofleviathan9697

    N64's 3rd party library is quite underrated. It's small but very high ratio of quality to quantity. Duke Nukem 64 and Zero Hour, Doom 64, Body Harvest, Shadow Man, San Francisco Rush series, best version of RE2, Castlevania: Legacy of Darkness, Turok 1-3, Sin & Punishment, Vigilante 8, BattleTanx, the AKI wrestling games, Ogre Battle 64, etc.
    Really like the GCN also, some incredible build quality on the hardware, but I'd rather play most of its 3rd party games on original Xbox instead.

    I wholeheartedly agree with that little bit in the middle where you mention how huge the leap is from N64 to GC graphically. It's easy to forget because it's all just "old" now but my jaw dropped to the floor the first time I saw Wave Race Blue Storm running on a kiosk at the mall - and I'd already played plenty Dreamcast and PS2 at that point. But it's easy to forget that the N64 was a HUGE jump from the SNES and even the PS1 and Saturn (at least at first, it's complicated). Likewise, Mario 64 on the Toys R Us kiosk is like a core memory at this point.

    I'd likely rather play games on the GameCube today, but the N64 definitely gets the win in terms of how just revolutionary and satisfying it was relative to it's time. All the GameCube games felt very underwhelming to me back in the day, especially all the first and second party entries in popular and beloved franchises, whereas so many N64 games genuinely blew me away at the time and saw many hours of play. The N64 felt magical and was objectively around during and part of one of the biggest paradigm shifts the gaming industry has ever seen. The GameCube just felt like a pretty typical next generation console, and worse than that actually didn't leave me as satisfied as the Xbox from Microsoft. Now that's just embarrassing for Nintendo that it could beat Microsoft with its first entry into the industry imo. The same thinking applies to thr controllers too, with the N64 one being revolutionary at the time, and the GameCube one, while very comfortable, actually felt a little disappinting compared to the Xbox's S controller and the PlayStation 2 controller. So yeah, N64 was mindblowing and magical. GameCube was very solid and all but also just kinda meh for most part imo.

    Absolutely GameCube for me. I got mine around 2003, and pretty much every new game I bought for it seemed like a real cut above any equivalent for any other console I'd played. It's what made me a Nintendo fan. I have some very fond memories of Double Dash, Smash Bros Melee and SoulCalibur II. Nintendo really had 3D design figured out at that point, and were able to produce first-party games more frequently, but it's Capcom's support for the console that knocks it out of the park for me. There's little that can compete with my first times through the Resident Evil remake, Resident Evil 4 and killer7. Absolute golden child console, for me. The N64 had Ocarina of Time, and I'll always have a certain respect for it because of that, but it doesn't come close to how much affection I have for the GameCube.
