Searching..... changing, Ms. Cohen-Solal.
Was lucky enough to see him seated alone at table in MOMA's garden one day. I went over and told him I loved his paintings but was too shy to say anything else. He thanked me and I left. Have since read much about him and what I love above all is how generous he was with his money. Always asking young artists he knew if they had enough money when he met them. Surely a sensitive soul like Mark is now enjoying a wonderful next life.
A growing pressure to paint immensely personal paintings must've drained him terribly in his last few months and then when his body failed him, at that point there was no point in sticking around. His work was done and he found a way to let go. I am eternally grateful to him for having discovered how to tell my own inner story in my own paintings.
An excellent conversation between Annie Cohen-Solal and Peter Selz.
Bravo 👏👏👏👏👏
We all came from our childhood. I find it really strange that lecturers and historians never mention that Rothko came from Latvia 🇱🇻, which was back then part of the Russian Empire. When Rothkos family moved to the US he was already 10 year old, his personality was in some way complete. In order to really understand him and his work one has to do a research about Latvia..It's very rich history, influences and tradition.
Fascinating, thanks for posting. Look forward to reading Annie's book.
Ms. Cohen.
Good afternoon & evening, hope all is well.

Exploring Mr. Rectangles
The shuttling stopped when he decided to commit suicide.
"No, I'll not. Despair not feast on thee. Not untwist, slack they may be, these last strands of man in me or, most weary, cry, I can no more. I can, can something hope, wish day come, not choose not to be"Gerald Manley Hopkins.
for my part, Rothko's genius is indivisible from his maximization of visual communication using effectively only 2 dimensions having eliminated texture from his work. Truly the highest level possible from a minimalist perspective. The lowest common denominator for so much said .. such as in Einstein's famous formula.
Ariel you dont seem to know what youre talking about. Why is would this even be the case? Why is Rothko the 'highest' or whatever in minimalist painting and not someone like Bram Bogart? Why would eliminating texture be a good or even bad creative choice? The answer is, there is no answer. Theses artists are empty and this is all mere pretension.
Ariel PS: the whole problem with his works is their FAILURE to communicate. They are silent- and passive screens that merely reflect back the aesthetic biases of the audience. There is no real dialogue. There is no real relation to a common human experience. They are just squares. But hey- keep the Rothko cult of peraonality afloat by repeating his pretentious philosophy that somehow AbEx is the peak of weatern art- when in reality a Rothko painting is to western painting is what a Haiku is to Paradise Lost. THE LOWEST COMMON DENOMINATOR IS NOT THE STANDARD.
Oblique Frontline I am very interested in your opinion. Your views are very thorough and honest. I am however wondering how you can prove that there is no dialogue. Do you have proof that any form of dialogue is non-existent? I would love to here back. Thank you!
@@obliquefrontline9415 so very sorry they don't communicate to you .. for me the magic is just how much they communicate with no texture to boot .. truly sorry
@@obliquefrontline9415 A very typical western way of seeing things, you aspect answers but you don't question yourself
8:55 His life is also that of a Jew. Clearly acknowledged thereafter but to fail to mention here upfront is very curious on her part.
I could paint the same thing, but I wouldn’t have the nerve to say I can paint. (I’m just sayin)
I could comment the same thing, but I wouldn’t have the nerve to say I was this vapid. ( I’m just sayin’)
Ag pleez not that tired old trope -your lack of insight and intelligence is showing
Scout, you are an idiot. A Mishel- exactly.
These so called experts, just boggles my mind. Get another so called expert on that stage talking and it's a totally different take on the artist and art. Which is correct. Non of them. As a painter, another person has to be in that head at the exact time of creation. The persons who know me and my art best are my three sisters. They know my art better than anybody and once in a great while; better than me.
