The Dishonored franchise is celebrated for its deep narrative, complex characters, and the freedom it offers players in how they approach each mission and its consequences.
Developed by Arkane Studios and published by Bethesda Softworks, the story revolves around themes of betrayal, revenge, and supernatural powers,
with each game focusing on different protagonists navigating complex political landscapes and personal vendettas.
    Dishonored (2012)
Set in the plague-ridden city of Dunwall, the first game follows Corvo Attano, the Empress's bodyguard, who is framed for her murder and the kidnapping of her daughter, Emily Kaldwin.
Corvo is aided by a mysterious figure known as the Outsider, who grants him supernatural abilities. As Corvo, players seek revenge against the conspirators and aim to restore Emily to the throne.
The game features a choice-driven narrative, allowing players to approach situations with lethal or non-lethal methods, influencing the story's outcome.
Dishonored: The Knife of Dunwall (2013)
The Knife of Dunwall puts players in the role of Daud, the leader of a group of assassins known as the Whalers.
Haunted by his murder of Empress Jessamine Kaldwin, Daud seeks redemption and answers to his guilt.
The Outsider, a mysterious figure who grants supernatural abilities, informs Daud of a name, "Delilah," which becomes the key to his quest.
In this expansion, Daud explores new areas of Dunwall, while uncovering the mystery behind Delilah.
He possesses unique abilities different from Corvo, such as summoning his followers and using a specialized version of the Blink ability.
    Dishonored: The Brigmore Witches (2013)
The Brigmore Witches continues Daud's story from The Knife of Dunwall.
It follows Daud's efforts to thwart Delilah Copperspoon, a powerful witch planning to use dark magic to take over Dunwall.
This expansion concludes Daud's arc and leads directly into the events of the main game.
Players guide Daud through new environments, facing off against the Brigmore Witches and their leader, Delilah.
The choices players made in The Knife of Dunwall carry over, influencing the story and its conclusion.
    Dishonored 2 (2016)
Fifteen years later, in Dishonored 2, players can choose to play as either Corvo Attano or Emily Kaldwin, now Empress, who are ousted from power by Delilah Copperspoon,
a powerful witch claiming to be the rightful heir to the throne. Set in both Dunwall and the coastal city of Karnaca, the game explores the protagonists' efforts to reclaim the throne.
Both characters have unique supernatural abilities, and the game continues the tradition of multiple play styles and branching storylines based on player choices.
Dishonored: Death of the Outsider (2017)
This standalone expansion follows Billie Lurk, a former associate of the infamous assassin Daud.
Billie seeks to eliminate the Outsider, the enigmatic figure responsible for granting supernatural powers.
Set in Karnaca, the game delves into the mystery of the Outsider's origins and offers a fresh perspective on the series' lore.
It retains the franchise's signature gameplay, with an emphasis on non-lethal options and player choice.
    _________
Some of the themes and art direction:
Betrayal and Revenge: Central to the franchise is the theme of betrayal, with protagonists seeking justice and revenge against those who wronged them.
Supernatural Powers: Characters are granted abilities by the Outsider, influencing gameplay and narrative choices.
Moral Choices: Player decisions significantly impact the game's story, with different endings based on the level of chaos caused by actions, particularly the use of lethal versus non-lethal methods.
From an artistic point of view, the Dishonored series can be described as a blend of several distinct and visually rich styles:
Neo-Victorian Steampunk Aesthetic: The games are set in a fictional world that combines elements of Victorian-era architecture and fashion with steampunk technology.
The cities of Dunwall and Karnaca feature grandiose, ornate buildings alongside industrial machinery and fantastical contraptions powered by whale oil.
Gothic Influences: There is a strong gothic undercurrent in the design, evident in the dark, brooding atmospheres, and intricate, often oppressive architecture.
The use of shadow and light plays a crucial role in creating a sense of mystery and foreboding.
Painterly Art Style: The visual design has a distinctive painterly quality, with textures and environments that often resemble impressionistic paintings.
This artistic approach gives the game a unique, almost surreal visual identity, setting it apart from more photorealistic game worlds.
Environmental Storytelling: The world of Dishonored is rich with details that tell stories through the environment.
Cluttered rooms, dilapidated buildings, and carefully placed objects provide insight into the lives of the inhabitants and the history of the locations.
This method of storytelling through visual means adds depth and immersion.
Dystopian and Decadent: The world combines elements of decay and opulence. While parts of the cities show signs of wealth and grandeur, there is an underlying sense of decay, corruption, and societal collapse. This juxtaposition highlights the class divide and the themes of power and exploitation.
Character and Costume Design: Characters are designed with a focus on distinct silhouettes and detailed costumes that reflect their status and personality.
The attire often blends historical influences with fantastical elements, creating a visually striking and memorable cast.
Color Palette and Lighting: The games use a muted, often desaturated color palette to enhance the sense of gloom and despair.
Strategic use of lighting helps to direct the player's attention, create mood, and emphasize the stealth mechanics, with shadows playing a crucial role in gameplay.
Fantastical Elements: Supernatural abilities and otherworldly entities are depicted with a sense of eerie beauty.
The Void, a mystical dimension in the game, is particularly notable for its abstract, surreal landscapes and enigmatic design.
