- Harvard is known as one of the best universities in existence. But what may be a little less well-known, is that they are actually the richest university, it's not even close. This video talks about where their money comes from and how they've used it to help earn their reputation and prestige.

Gosh man, way to have faith in us.

Joe whoops!
Woah, I was wondering how he thought 32mil was huge for the top school in the world, but damn! 32bil is crazy
Literally, today in Psychology we got to the Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation, and their endowment, then our professor showed us Harvard’s endowment so I actually knew this. Granted, I learned it today.
37 BILLION dollars?!......... damn!
Part of the reason Harvard's endowment stays large is because they are full of legacy students. Alumns are more likely to donate because they know there child will get in. If they had an admission policy like say mit where they only took the best and factored legacy considerations less alumns would donate less.
ASMR People alumnus😊
*Less* alumnus would donate *less* , what?!
ASMR People thats just the world my dude...
The endowment doesn’t matter what matter is the students if they make it the school would make it with the alumni donation...I would say at lease there using there money wisely...
ASMR People
The plural of alumnum is alumni and you meant "their", not "there".
I lived on Harvard campus and my father was a teacher at their medical school. I would like to add, one of the main reasons people think “Harvard is for the rich” is partly due to the fact, that Harvard intentionally goes to recruit students from wealthy families from across the globe. I met 2 prince’s from Asia and a a few Chinese billionaires children.
This is so true, I know people here in Mexico, really close to the top layers of politics/bureaucracy, and they've got invitations and full scholarship to study in Harvard/Yale even if they're nowhere near qualified to study here in UNAM.
Cool. More money for them and more money in the USA. And it's great for New England.
One of the major biscuit brand from Turkey instead of making an endowment in Turkey to any college, he rather went gave all the biscuit money to harvard lab. Pff ridiculous.
Damn!
Yeah, those guys pay full tuition and more.
The richest university in the world is the community college I go to. They sell HotPockets in the vending machines. You can't get any fancier than that!

I attended Harvard a few years ago, and I can attest to their financial aid. When I first started at Harvard I was just another custodian on the Janitorial staff, sweeping up halls, cleaning up trash, and solving the occasional math problem posted outside a professor lecture room, but no one expected an answer to a complex, nearly impossible problem, to come from a guy in a cleaning jumpsuit. Eventually the professor found it was me solving the math problems and told all the deans and teachers, other math professors and old college friends about me. I even met with a therapist a few times a week to talk about what is going on in my brain. Long story short, most of these kids wasted $150,000 on an education they coulda got for $1.50 in late fees at the public library.
Matias Robles Good will hunting. Nice

It's not that wealthy families value education more, it's that they have the ability to give their kids more resources that make it easier to get higher grades and scores, private tutors, private schools, laptops, calculators.
Yes, is it really any surprise that Harvard is the "best" when you only pick the highest scoring students, the richest students of former rich students, put them into a jobs market that values degrees from exclusive universities and rich people.
Gee, I wonder why that will make your school look good, make you more money? It can't be that it was designed to be self-perpetuating. not at all.
If we all took a fieldtrip to that university we can all say *"WE WENT TO HARVARD UNIVERSITY"*

The tuition price for low income students (like myself) is surprisingly low at tons of top 30 colleges. They want smart students, that become successful alumnis, so they have higher alumni donations. Most top colleges are need blind too, meaning that they don't even take into account your financial situation when you apply. If you are smart enough to get in, they'll figure out a way to help you with tuition. For instance, if you're accepted into Vanderbilt and your parents make less than $40,000/yr, they will offer you financial aid, and you can get anywhere from $45,537 to $71,213. These aren't loans. They are just willing to help you if they think you're a good fit for their school.
Sadie Bee the problem with this is that 40,000 is less than the average salary of a us worker. Hence let’s say that both parents work full time, and you were a good student you’d be hit with nearly a full price tuition that costs a quarter of a million dollars. this is fuckin insane for an undergraduate degree. So either your super rich or meet some kind of qualification that enables for a large subsidy.
@@grayalien6357 most of them scale downwards. so someone who makes $45,000 a year will get a ton of scholarships, but still less than someone who's parents make $40,000.
@@grayalien6357
You clearly don't know what the fuck you are talking about.
If you make a little more than 40,000, you pay a little more. You don't pay the full tuition. Someone who has a 70,000 income will pay less than someone with a 120,000 income.
You probably should do some research first or watch the video. :/
@@grayalien6357 median household income on the US is 60k and average us worker income is 31.1k Way under what you said it was at "above 40k per worker"
When he asked how big I guess Harvard's endowment is, I guessed 10 to 11 inches.
I don't think I'd be accepted to Harvard.
I was recently accepted to Harvard, along with various other top schools, and their financial aid was by far the most affordable. Harvard is able to fund students’ education because of their incredible endowment. Not only the tuition, but once you are at Harvard they will fund any ideas or projects you have in mind. Harvard is an incredible place that I can’t wait to be a part of.
So, how's studying there going for ya?

When I took them they offered BOTH versions; 1600 and 2400. We had to take both of them, and it sucked ass.
It just seems that no matter how successful people that graduate from Harvard are, they always seem to be snobby and rude to people like they’re SO much better than other people.
Graviteh Did you go to that school!!?.
No, just know people from there 😂
They are some of the brightest and most successful people in the world, and they know it. I'm sure that a lot of them feel a huge sense of pride with what they have accomplished, and I don't really blame them. However, that still does not excuse bad conduct towards others.
Graviteh well they are

Yes, Harvard should pay taxes. Colleges are businesses, and businesses should pay taxes.
NO ONE SHOULD PAY TAXES!!!!!!
The really wealthy need to.
Do Harvard professors grade on a curve? If so, I wonder what the psychological impact is on all of those 4.0 students who are suddenly getting C's, D's and F's?
raven lord a friend of mine from high school went to Harvard. Had a 99% average in his senior year.
Dropped out before Christmas because he couldn't handle a C.
I would too. But I doubt my 3.1 GPA would have gotten me in. And that's the catch-22 for these Ivy League schools. Most of these 4.0 students would NOT be happy with just any grade, regardless of which school gave it to them. But if they admit 2.5 , 3.0 and 3.5 students to make a more normal distribution of the curve, then they dilute their "prestige". Still, not sure if I'd want to go to a school though where half the students have suicide hotline on their speed dial :P
I had a 3.7 in high school, a 3.4 in bachelors, and they graded on a different scale but I'm thinking a 3.0 in masters. The material got harder and I wasn't willing to extremely increase my effort to overcome that. Ill bet many others have the same idea. Just get the degree, don't disregard grades but don't let them ruin your day either.
Daniel V completely, completely agree.
raven lord 2/3 of grades given are As. Also
Harvard (and Ivy Leagues in general) have different priorities than, say Oxford or Cambridge. Oxford still has a rather hostile environment towards its E&M (economics and management) students, with many colleges refusing to teach the degree outright (claiming it to be unethical, antithetical to academia, etc.). Meanwhile, Cambridge has refuse to build a business school at all. Looking at other disciplines, many students attend Harvard medical school hoping to receive a massive salary as a surgeon or pharmaceutical dev. The same can be said for lawyers and the Harvard Law school. On the other hand, Oxford and Cambridge tend to emphasise the pursuit of knowledge and the benefit of mankind rather than making a profit. In fact, I know from firsthand experience that Oxford tends not to encourage its students to pursue anything outside of academia or public service (even if it is to the detriment of their potential funding). I'm not saying that there's anything wrong with the Harvard/Ivy League model. I'm merely highlighting that they have a different objective than their British counterparts.
That explains why when I saw the series Yes Minister and Yes Prime Minister it was always assumed that the civil servants are either Oxford or Cambridge.
But that lies the differences in outlook when it comes to college. In Europe many have the two tier academic or vocational system where there's a more defined path for people when it comes to education past high school. Whereas in America college, no matter what it is, is defined as a ticket to a high paying job or an upper class life while trade schools are largely ignored.
flyingphoenix113 That's really interesting. Oxford must be pumping a lot of those academic pocket-protector professor nerds then I suppose? :-P Now see I just find that humorous but my ideal heroes are those kids who did a few years in a college like Harvard then conquered the world with businesses they started. Steve Jobs, Bill Gates Mark Zuckerberg etc. That Oxford thing sounds like a useless life. Surrounded by a veil of education and educated people and producing not much of value because you don't produce anything for the world.
552mustang it seems to embody the true essence of historical American /Britishness. The promotion of education as a tool to dominate the world through the founding principle of capitalism and on the other side the advocation of higher learning and enlightenment to control the world through civil service.
552mustang 1. Pure academic education is not "useless" at all. 2. Saying "surrounded by a veil of education and educated people and producing not much of value because you don't produce anything for the world" is very, very arbitrary.

It's not as simple as exploiting labor and using language in a contract that most people don't bother to read when they sign. EA and Buzzfeed do similar things and they're growing every year. The decline of Machinima does require proper research and time to find an answer, I think MrRyan's suggestion is justified, but I think Company Man has more important topics to cover such as the decline of MSN and Yahoo.

I think that Harvard should be taxed like any other profit oriented institution, although the "profit oriented" label should be discussed thoroughly in the case of Harvard, or any large private University for that matter, especially those, which have huge amounts of endowment at their disposal.
+Sergio Navarro Well seeing that they use public service and pay no taxes guess who has to fit the difference? Me and you
Do they pay capital gains on any moneys not reinvested?
I would hope so but those are federal taxes which don't go to local police, firefighters and schools
Sergio Navarro Such should be irrelevant in such a debate.
What public services do Havard use
You should do a video about Gibson Guitars. They are in shambles currently. 520 million in debt. Federal government is investigating them. They are using rare woods illegally. It's a real shit show over there.
TheMachineShop that’s a shame
+referral madness why
+TheMachineShop Gibson is doing fine in terms of sales, they just made stupid decisions with buying other companies.
Phillips Exeter Academy (A High school) Has a 902 Million dollar endowment.
Should a net billion dollar institution be taxed... yes. At the very least they should be taxed to cover all of the public services they have access and use like public infrastructure, police, firefighters etc.
At the very least, yes.
But aren't the individuals going to Harvard already get taxed for those things? I think an educational establishment will do just as well or better with the money than the government could manage.
Rob Glenn students don't pay property tax, so how could they cover Harvard's costs to Cambridge?
Well I'm not aware what amount of the students have to work while at Harvard but I'm guessing it's not the majority has given the break down of the students family income, not to mention the majority of possible income taxes are federal which aren't going to help Cambridge
If a chunk of the money that would tax goes into reduced tuition and support, no.
Speaking of college does Company Man have a business degree or something similar?
Brandon Michaels as far as I know he never said so...
He hasn't mentioned a degree, but he has said he has a "background in business." I can't remember which video he said that in, but I believe it was one of the earlier ones. Pretty sure he doesn't have a Harvard degree after watching this video, though. 😜
Was rejected by Harvard, but accepted at Cornell (which, admittedly has the highest acceptance rate of the Ivies). Never went, however, and I think it was a great decision. It is an overly-competitive and stressful environment to which you would subject yourself and it is very grating over time. I know people who leave Ivy League schools with massive depression simply because of the competitive atmosphere and a feeling like you don’t belong. I could certainly sense that problem from my brief visits to Cornell’s campus. Now I am a fairly successful young fella making more money than anybody who graduated high school with me.
I was a special student (student-level qualifications for part-time non-degree study) at Harvard for a few years after graduating from M.I.T. and before going on to get a PhD at Penn State. I enjoyed Harvard very much and encouraged my daughter to apply there because they'd have cost me much less than the quarter million the school she wound up attending cost me.
You watch Rick and Morty?

im special ed too!
My ex girlfriend went there and she was from a straight up poor family and she was almost paid to go there. Their scholarship program is really amazing. Plus when you get out having that on your resume puts you in such a ratified air. You just stand to make so much more money and have so many more connections. Mark Zuckerberg and I have a mutual friend on FB and my dumb ass only visited her there a few times, that's the kind of networking a school like that can get you.
For high schoolers, don't worry about Harvard. As long as the degree program at your local state school is accredited (for example ABET accreditation for engineering schools) your diploma is as good as anyone else's from any other school when it comes to undergraduate programs. Postgraduate degrees is where the "name" and "reputation" of the school start playing a role, and when you want to consider more prestigious universities.
I agree a lot and disagree a little!
Yes, with engineering the GPA and Degree matter the most, and schools matters less, but I have friends in Silicon Valley that tell me that there is still a bias for "top schools" that is unspoken.
With that said, unless you want to have an unhealthy work-life balance, don't work in those places. lol
I have in fact attended Harvard and it is unbelievable. The facilities, the dorms or as they call them houses. I stayed in the Winthrop house(best house) and it was a great experience. I truly believe it is the best university.

If you can afford going to harvard just go to a cheap trade school instead or a cheap local community college and pick a major that's guaranteed to make a return like biochem plus premed. That way you wont have to spend your life flipping burgers everyday.
wish i knew about all this in middle school. i totally butchered my gpa then by thinking grades didn’t matter.
It would be interesting to see an episode specifically about MIT's ethic. It is one of the hardest schools in the nation to get into, yet they also help benefit the community outside of their campus by providing 100% free lecture recordings for most of their classes, as well as creating a website used to teach code to schools across the nation.
I get that the endowment is cyclical, but higher education (especially postgraduate degrees) are counter-cyclical. More people get their MBAs, PhDs etc. when the economy is shitty. This is mostly due to having a larger amount of unemployed people interested in getting a postgrad degree. As for the >50% get scholarship aid, it's certainly misleading. I went to a private university and 90%+ got scholarship aid. $2,800 for $40,000 annually it's a small (but appreciated) dent.
Yeah of course it is, 50% get aid, some might literally get $1000. No one is under the illusion that Harvard is packed with working class kids.
It’s very disappointing for someone to think that richer people value education more than poorer people. Rich people can afford to. People with more money simply have access to much better education and facilities, even just at high school level. One school I went to gave juniors practice SATs while the other didn’t mention the SATs even to graduating seniors. Having gone to both very poor schools and relatively rich schools when I was growing up, the difference is staggering.
I got accepted to Harvard and I went for 2 semesters. I dropped out because the pressure was "too much". Now I'm in my mid-30s working night shifts at 7-11 thinking of what could have been...

I wonder if part of the reason for higher income students making up a larger share of the Harvard student body has to do with the resources they had access to prior to attending. You mentioned that rich families tend to value education more. They also have the money necessary to invest in SAT prep courses and tutors, send their kids to better school districts that receive better funding, and access other materials designed to help their kids achieve the stats necessary for admission. A poorer family may value education but lack the means to provide their children with this assistance.
I disagree with your statistics.
The richest university in the world is Yale not Harvard. Sure Harvard has a bigger endowment but look at the amount of students they have compared to Yale. With the way you calculated it is like, I made a million dollars and I have a family of 10 vs I made $800,000 with a family of 4.
bigman19916 but they still have more money so basically who’s richer the family of 10 or the family of four? The ratio is higher for the family of 4 but family of 10 has more money...
Whit the knowledge of how it works in my country (Switzerland) one of the many points why mostly wealthy families send their children to good universities seems to be that they can afford all the additional costs of education: stable childhood, "good" neighborhood= better schools, support for the kids such as tutoring and so on. Not saying its impossible for children from low income families just that there are more indirect hurdles in their way....
Don't be fooled. Tuition is only the beginning. What about housing costs? food? Transportation? Etc
Yeah but you have to live and eat anyway right? Might as well do it at Harvard
They pay for that too.
Seriously, they pay for it all. Heck, it isn't even just Harvard, it's most elite universities. I go to UNC Chapel Hill and I receive full need-based aid. I don't pay a bill, my dorm room, my meal plan, I even get a little bit to pay for textbooks. All I have to do is pay for incidentals, and they give me work study for that. I'm graduating next year with a degree in Poli and Econ with 0 debt.
I'm glad you mentioned Harvard's financial aid. It being expensive is only sort of true. I went about ten years ago on full tuition assistance (based on my family's income) and thanks to the endowment, graduated debt free.
I am a simple man, I see Company Man video, I hit like.
Soren too bad dislikes dont do anything to comments.
Fact: each of Harvard's schools have an official donation bracket list, itemizing what each level of donation gets you. Basically, the more you donate, the bigger a thing you get named after you. $10,000? You get a small class named after you. $50,000, a large classrom. $100,000, a lecture auditorium. $1 million, a building wing. $10-$100 million, an entire building. A Chinese billionaire recently donated $1 billion to the Harvard School of Public health, so they named THE ENTIRE SCHOOL after him. Go look up the site; they are now officially called the "Harvard T.H. Chan School of Public Health".
On top of that, the name is only for a set amount of time. I think around 20 years. After that, the name lapses unless you donate again to renew it. Otherwise they change the name to the next big donor.
And there's a long time saying of anyone who's spent any amount of time on the Harvard campus:
You will never find smarter people than the Harvard students who are there on scholarship.
You will never find dumber people than the Harvard students who are there thanks to old money.
Keep up the good work!
zachattack1479 Always as he does.
Funny thing is, Ivy League schools like Harvard, Stanford, and Cambridge, typically have far lower tuition rates than most other schools.
Can you do Steve and Barry's?
Alfonso Fernandez I suggested that before myself, but honestly, you could just watch the HHGregg video. It’s almost exactly the same story.
It doesn't change. Leaders in Washington and on Wall Street make huge donations to the Harvard endowment fund, even though they never went there, and had no connections to the school at all. When i was looking at law schools in 1976, I was confident I would get in, but pretty sure I could never afford it. I was thrilled to read in the financial aid materials a broad statement to the effect that my fears were baseless. It essentially said that "if you gain admission to Harvard, don't worry about money. We'll make sure you can afford it". And that made the form rejection letter I received hurt just that much worse.
I'm guessing the endowment is 38 billion
edit: I was close
The whole time I’m thinking I would never be smart enough to go to Harvard but I am at least at a modestly prestigious school. And then the last picture is of Harvard playing basketball against that very school that I’m at.
maybe 2 videos per week company man? it'd be great
I really wish I could make that a regular thing but there's just so much that goes into these videos that would be very difficult to pull of as of right now.
I have friends who went and taught at Harvard...I’m was from a low income family, and Harvard loves getting lower income applicants. Their enrollment is not bias to lower income and actually want people to do better for themselves than generations prior. That and their knowledge of how to use money wisely is how they succeed
Why do you always sound so unsure?
Great question.
I know, right?
Did you just reply to yourself
Forgot to switch to his fake account that agrees with him lol
Dat Gurl No it was my dad on our account
Thank you for explaining every little thing, makes it easy for anyone watching to understand
universities are vile and despicable through and through. state schools are the god damnedest of them all. they give needs based scholarships to upper-middle class girls and automatically deny genuinely qualifying underprivileged boys. taxes shouldn't subsidize institutionalized bigotry.
I was a clinical instructor at Harvard Law School and I am a Columbia graduate (2nd Generation), a couple of things (1) Richer parents value education more? I would argue they have access to better educational quality for their children. And can make sure their children have a tutor for any thing they are weak at - including SAT prep. (2) $37 Billion dollars is too much for one school (Listen to Malcolm Gladwell's Revisionist History episode "Food Fight" on exactly this topic) I would propose a luxury tax similar to what is used in professional sports to support the "poorer" teams. To support the "poorer" schools - mostly community colleges and state universities. These institutions are educating far more young people than a few top schools. Some basic numbers, the University of California system is educating 250,000 students on average and has an endowment of $14 Billion... Or the University of Massachusetts system (My undergrad institution) has an endowment of $750 million and educated 70,000 students... While Harvard has only 20,000 students and $37 billion. School - even higher education - is essential to upward mobility and a healthy democracy the endowment of the top schools is becoming a part of the county's growing inequality - we should use taxes and public policy to share opportunity with everyone. Improving all schools should be the goal, but I also believe we shouldn't do too much that we destroy the top schools. But I am sure Harvard could afford to lose $1-2 billion to make it possible for UMass (or other state schools) to have even one billion in its endowment and educate nearly 3x the students.
I had a dream where I went to Harvard and let me say that the campus is great!
I went to Stanford. It was just for a day to meet some girl off Bumble who liked the rodin sculpture garden there. But it still counts as going to Stanford.
"Respected."
the cost of tuition may be affordable for lower-income families but keep in mind the money that goes into SAT prep, you have to have the money to pay for tutors/prep classes and materials and need the luxury of being able to take time away from work to study or attend the prep classes. There's still a class gateway
You are growing very fast
ikr
I hope so.
One guy named Minoru Arakawa who was the president of Nintendo of America graduated at MIT back in the NES days
*plus facebook was invented there*
i personally believe harvard should be allowed to do what they are doing since they are using that money to improve themselves and their students. if they were hoarding all of that money for themselves and spending it on the administrative staff then things should change but rn it is the best situation for harvard and the world.
I got my Ph.D from DeVry
It's true that if you're extremely rich or struggling financially your tuition is going to be affordable (for the rich it's still gonna be high, but they can afford that). The real issue is for middle/upper middle class people, since they won't qualify for the majority of student aid, but their families don't have enough money to afford the high prices either. Not really fair in my opinion.
I have a 2.9 GPA lol
what’s ur guys gpas
7.5/4
3.4
0.0 honestly
3.75
My Language Arts teacher went to Harvard. Ms. Vining, if you're reading this, you're one of my favorite teachers.
Your voice tenders my man parts.
I'd go to Harvard for the gorgeous architecture alone. Also for having actual chairs in a lecture hall.
*clicks video*
*instantly hits like*
First generation just means the parents of the student didn’t graduate from a four year university and vice versa, not that they are the first to got to Harvard.
The richest what!!!!????. Who's second then!?.
Yale at about 21 billion
Watch the video, the top 5 are shown in the video
mustardymayo Sorry. Lol.
Illya Lypyak Thanks.
Please do a video on Berea College! They fund tuitions entirely off of the endowment interest and FAFSA scholarships so that students from low income families can attend for almost free. Also the first interracial college in the South.
i went to hardvard. what you say iscorrect
Right.
Beatson why am I not surprised
hardvard
Beatson hardvard sounds like another word for dick
Bruh, I know I been super busy lately, and less time actually watching videos, but I KNOW everyday I scroll through the subscriptions and decide which are worth my time during that particular day. Your videos are always at the top, only behind AnxietyWar and possibly CRH... Neither this video nor the Platinum music video did
I live in Brazil and know three people that went to Harvard... But they were from high class families... So that makes this point kind of invalid...😐
I mean I agree I think its total BS. But you having some anecdotal evidence at best dose not make the point invalid. Kinda explains why you didn't go ;P
The Marshmallow Man probably you're right.... none the less, I still couldn't afford it and if they could, that was their luck, that's all.
There are tens of thousands of universities in the world. If you attend one that is fairly reputable, you're getting a good education. Going to Harvard doesn't automatically make someone more educated/skilled. Specially considering the fact that the American system of examinations and grading is generally considered to be too stressful and counterproductive. Any top university in any developed country will be comparable in terms of quality of education and that's what really matters. Sure Harvard is nice badge to have on your resume, but so is Yale or Cambridge or NUS.

Do their downfall on comics
I think another huge factor for why rich people get in - SAT scores and GPA is pretty strongly correlated with how much money your parents have to send you to private schools and get you the best tutors.
G R A D E I N F L A T I O N
I think there has to be a Harvard and elite educational institutions to allow the very best to excel. I am glad that they have the money to fund poorer excellent students and programs of research that benefit all. And, if they produce some snobs, it comes with the territory.
Except Harvard and most ivy league schools are not taking many low income families. Very misleading video from you, I really like your channel though!
He did give the Harvard Crimson stats, 15% below $40,000 family income.
Surprising you haven't done a video about RUclips. There is so much to talk about. Like how it became THE media. Like Facebook
