  • Hey guys, last weekend I moved most of my belongings to a new apartment, and I did so using my Brompton, my Kona Sutra, and my Burley Travoy cargo trailer.
It took me 5 runs to carry the bulk of my stuff, and the rest (kitchen items, toiletries, and camera gear will be taken when I actually move, in a couple of days.
    #brompton #burleytravoy #konasutra
Moving to a new apartment (by bike) | Brompton, Burley Travoy, and Kona Sutra
There comes a time in the life of every graduate student, when he decides that packing up all of his stuff and moving to a different apartment is definitely worth the hundred dollars he’ll save in rent. And well, I know that, because it’s happening to me.
So - today, I’ll be leaving my old apartment complex and moving to a new building. It’s a couple of km farther away from work, so I’ll have to commute for longer, but it’s newer, and I’m excited my room is going to have three windows, and a brighter room to studying, recording videos, and editing.
Thankfully, my old apartment was furnished, so the bed, dressers - they’ll stay there for the new tenant. For the new apartment, I bought furniture from IKEA and just needed to build them up. I personally think it’s super cool to assemble these things. It’s like LEGO for adults. In the end, it’s looking quite all right.
Even though I don’t have to move the bed and couch doesn’t mean I don’t have a LOT of stuff to move.
I decided to take the challenge to move everything by bike and, for that, I’ll be using a brand new Burley Travoy, that was sent to me as a replacement to my old trailer.
Moving to a new place meant I needed to pack some of my stuff into boxes. For the piano, I ended up using the boxes it came in. I kept those specifically for whenever I would move to a different place, and it came quite handy. The rest of my stuff fit into different boxes, of even my large duffel bag. The most concerning item was probably my large rug. I bought this because I simply hated the concrete flooring of my old apartment and wanted to have as much of it covered as possible. So you can imagine the size of the inconvenience to have to move this thing by bike. I packed roughly 80% of my stuff and organized it in the living room, to have an idea of the effort I would have to put in.
With everything organized in the living room, I started moving.
The two places are roughly a mile away from each other, so going back and forth between them wasn’t an issue at all.
For this one, I had to be extra careful because the center of gravity of the trailer was just so high, that it would definitely tip over if I went fast on a corner or hit a large pothole. You just need to keep these things in mind when you’re riding, take it easy, and you should be fine.
At the end of each run, I left the stuff in the new apartment and went back for more.
These 4 runs were a piece of cake compared to what the last one would be. For the rug, I spared you guys a long thought process, and will show you the final solution I came up with.
Riding with the rug was impressively easy and stable. I just needed to keep in mind, at all times, that I was conducting a semi-truck, and had to make very wide corners. I ended up getting so good at it, that I could even ride through the tightest corners of my new apartment complex.
In the end, I was able to take everything that I planned to, and I think I did pretty well, since I only broke on glass cup while moving everything by bike.
I hope you guys enjoyed this video and found it entertaining. If you’re not yet subscribed to this channel, I release videos like this every Sunday morning… As for this video, I know, doing all of this with a rented truck would definitely be easier, and I may need something like that for the next time I move. Cars are great, and I appreciate the fact that some people really need them. I’m glad that’s not my case though, and I can do mostly anything I need by bike. Thank you for moving my stuff with me today and see you on the next one.

This video is what convinced me to buy my Burley Travoy!!! I LOVE it!!! I haven’t owned a car in years, and I didn’t want to buy one, but I needed to haul things more, that just weren’t cutting it, on my bike rack, or panniers. After buying the Travoy, no need for a car! Thank God, especially since they are insanely priced! A used car is going for brand new prices now!

I've done this with a Brompton and Travoy here in Manchester, UK, too. It's fine when it's very local and there's nothing to big, such a furniture etc. As my move was only 15 minutes walk away, I actually mainly used the Travoy as a hand trailer, which it works well as. The hardest part was getting everything upstairs to my first floor flat flat (second floor in the US).

Lego for adults. Like that. Subbed. Fellow Brompton owner with H6R (converted to H6L).
That move is probably easier in the US due to your grid system and network of wide roads, here in the UK we have corners, roundabouts, narrow roads and drivers who like to ‘fight’ for their road space by intimidating others and close-passing cyclists.

Before lockdown, travelled by train, bus, regularly taking Brompton to cycle visiting elderly relatives, who don’t have regular public transport near their homes. So often travelled 8-16 mile journeys, with my overnight camping gear, on front bag and rear carrier. Not electric, so did push it up a lot of steep hills (has 3 gears). Being a senior citizen found walking up hills easier...also chance to enjoy country views...but going down hills was great and l always reached my destinations safely. ☺️

I am currently travelling in my expedition vehicle in Scandinavia and a great foldable bike is just the perfect tool to explore the areas I am visiting. I wonder if you had folded the rug in half (so that it would be 4 ft) and then folded it if that would have worked. I mean, it wouldn't have rolled like you have it, but it could have folded to some extent. It seems like you had more room for extra width with those larger boxes from previous loads. So, I'm thinking some configuration of folding vs rolling may have been an option, but I'm not sure how well it would have worked, based on not being able to actually see it in person. Still, though, you got it done! Impressive indeed!!

It‘s called an Insta360 X2. You can use it on a selfie stick that will automatically be edited out, the image stabilized and straightened up and reprojected to an equirectangular image.

Thank you! I'm still struggling with a good setup for the voice overs, but with time it will improve. I'm a graduate research assistant, so I work part-time in research, and the other half of my time I spend studying for my master's degree. Videos are recorded/edited on Saturday, and Sundays are usually more relaxed. It's a pretty packed week, to be honest. Haha

I'm kind of in love with Smol Plant riding behind you. You should take it out for rides on the regular.

That's Maria. I may take her for rides on the weekends. She doesn't like the sun too much, so I must improvise a shade for her. I also think she looks pretty sitting on the rear rack!

Ok you sold me on the Travoy cargo. If you can pull it off hauling with a brompton I can surely manage doing groceries with a 20 inch wheel electric bike!

Nice work with that rug! Didn't think you'd manage it haha. What do you think about e-bike conversion kits such as the Swytch for the Brompton or just the Brompton e-bike in general? Eagerly awaiting your next video =D
