My room looks a lot like yours because it’s also in an old building. The previous teacher was in my room for a long time & left so much stuff behind. I started the process yesterday & found a lot of teacher books from 1984! I still have so much work to do. Congrats to you! I can’t wait to watch the rest of your set up videos.

Congrats on your first teaching job! I'm going into my eighth year and still get just as excited to start setting up my classroom. You all are so lucky you can get into your schools so quickly! We won't be allowed in until mid-July, as the custodians have to clean everything top to bottom and we can't move in until it's all done. This is doubly hard for me this year because I'm moving schools (same district and grade, just a new building) and really want to get into my new space! The items you asked what they are are weights used with a spring scale or triple beam balance when teaching science. As for your board if it is hot glue on your board... then soak it in rubbing alcohol- use a cotton ball or paper towel and it should peel off. That has always worked for me and I hot glue everything.

Congratulations on your first classroom! I'm currently preparing mine too, although I came into a completely empty room! The transparencies you found are old "tech" but for your current Envision curriculum as far as I can see. A lot of schools don't have updated technology and are still running overhead projectors if you can imagine, so the curriculum makers offer those materials.

Thank you for watching! I thought of doing that too! I might! I just want to make sure it is usable. I know some people find great chalk paint that they use chalk markers on and it erases fine. Some people have bad luck though and the chalk markers end up staining or not erasing. Did you use chalk markers on yours?
Miller's Happy Class I did use the chalk markers, but they didn’t erase the best. I ended up using regular chalk and/or using the black as a backdrop for a bulletin board.

I just graduated this year and I am so excited for my first room. I just helped my mom do what you had to on those chalk boards. She has one chalk board in her classroom that she covers with paper. To do that we use hot glue and make it a bulletin board. It looks like that is what some one did with your boards.
Oh yes! The chalk board was covered with foam board. It looked like what a science project board is made of. You should make videos! I would love to see the special education side of things!
I’m from Texas as well!! I’m currently a special education teacher aide (just finished my first year!). I plan to teach as well and get into speech therapy!

Hi, Congratulations on getting First Grade. I saw some familiar blue and green plastic crates on the shelves under that pile of the former teacher's things. If I am correct, those are leveled readers and excellent books. Even if they don't go with your new reading series, they will be excellent books for the kids. There should be red, green and blue crates with books. I taught first grade for 25 years and used that reading series. Suggestion, cut those long ruled writing drawing paper in half. Those would be good for creative writing. One whole sheet is too long. You might try using poster putty ( blue or yellow looks like modeling clay strips sold in school supply or office supply section of WalMart/ Target) to hold up your brick paper. Enjoy your new adventure.
If you still have the old math projectable pages you could use them in a math center or group. The students can write on them and they would wipe right off :)
You could do small curtain type things on your shelves! Find a cute fabric you like and cut it to the length and width you need. Congrats on your first classroom.
I found some extension rods to use for hanging curtains there. All of the classrooms in our building have these counters and most teachers do cover the shelves with curtains. I am thinking I will cover them all except for some closest to the reading area. I'm hoping to use them as bookshelves.
At the hardware store you could get some wipe on stain to put on the bottom of your shelves. It will make it look like new and last. I’ve redone bathroom cabinets with it, no sanding before needed.
That's a great idea! The only thing is that there is alot of the clear sealer left on most of it though so I don't think it would go on there evenly. Hmm....

Congrats on getting being a first grade teacher...it’s the BEST! I’m a 3rd year teacher..my first year I taught 1st grade, last year I did a 1st/2nd combo and I’ll be entering my 3rd year during the combo again. So I’m still fairly “new” as well lol it’s so exciting to decorate and I love watching other teachers :)
I have heard of people doing the combo thing, but I don't know how that works! Is that done in small schools, or is there another purpose for combining the grades? Yes, it is so exciting decorating ! I love it!
If I decide to keep it I will have to figure out what is wrong with the wheels. On the video that will be next you will see that blue stuff was coming off of the wheels and getting on the floor. So we emptied all of the stuff out of the bins into my own boxes.
Easier way to remove that velcro is a heat gun or blow dryer,only takes a couple of seconds with the heat gun and the velcro will peel right off !! Congrats on your first classroom!!
Miller's Happy Class No, I am moving up to 2nd grade so that means I’ll have some of my kiddos again! I’ve taught 2nd previously so I’m excited! Just watched Day 8 and that student work board is gorgeous!! I wish I could do something like that, but we have to have separate ELA, Math, and Science boards with targets & vocab, so I put a few student works on each of those. Hmmm, now that I’m thinking, maybe I could do what you did but just do three on each board. I love your videos girl; your voice is so soothing to me. Oh that would be so neat to get to have some of the same kids again! I spent alot of time in 2nd as an aide and I really liked that age group too. Do you have any hallway space? I'm confused! When did your school year end?? and When does the upcoming school year begin? Are you on summer break? How are you able to be in your classroom already? I so wish I could get into my classroom over summer! It bums me out when I see teachers in their classrooms in July! :(
We got out May 24th and school doesn't start until I think the 3rd week of August. We report back the 2nd week of August. I was so glad we were allowed in the rooms in June. I can't go in July though. I'm sorry you have to wait! I would be going crazy if I had to!

I haven't asked...but maybe I should. I watched one video on the topic and the teacher said she asked her district and they said it was okay as long as she didn't show first or last names, handwriting, or anything else that someone could possibly identify a child with. She also said that they told her to not film during contract hours or to show the outside of the building or name the school. Those are the things that stuck out to me so I'm going to follow all of those rules. I hadn't thought about the contract hours or the handwriting.
I need to see what the camera is that I have been using. It used to be my sister's. But the editing program I have is PowerDirector 16. Tomorrow I will try to remember to check the camera.
The camera is a Canon PowerShot SX730 HS. It was my sister's so she picked it out. To me, it seems liks the battery dies very quickly, but I haven't looked into the settings or anything. I keep thinking surely its something I am doing wrong 😁.

The gold cylinders are weights. I used them in physics in highschool.

You can always spray paint the tubs in the cubbies to make them bright and colorful
I thought of that, but I doubt I am allowed to since it belongs to the school.

Oh that would be so neat to get to have some of the same kids again! I spent alot of time in 2nd as an aide and I really liked that age group too. Do you have any hallway space? I have seen some people do big student work displays in the hallways. I like your idea though. I still have to figure out my other boards!😲😌. Awww now I need to go back and listen to my voice haha. I'm confused! When did your school year end?? and When does the upcoming school year begin? Are you on summer break? How are you able to be in your classroom already? I so wish I could get into my classroom over summer! It bums me out when I see teachers in their classrooms in July! :(
We got out May 24th and school doesn't start until I think the 3rd week of August. We report back the 2nd week of August. I was so glad we were allowed in the rooms in June. I can't go in July though. I'm sorry you have to wait! I would be going crazy if I had to!

I haven't asked...but maybe I should. I watched one video on the topic and the teacher said she asked her district and they said it was okay as long as she didn't show first or last names, handwriting, or anything else that someone could possibly identify a child with. She also said that they told her to not film during contract hours or to show the outside of the building or name the school. Those are the things that stuck out to me so I'm going to follow all of those rules. I hadn't thought about the contract hours or the handwriting.

I need to see what the camera is that I have been using. It used to be my sister's. But the editing program I have is PowerDirector 16. Tomorrow I will try to remember to check the camera.
The camera is a Canon PowerShot SX730 HS. It was my sister's so she picked it out. To me, it seems liks the battery dies very quickly, but I haven't looked into the settings or anything. I keep thinking surely its something I am doing wrong 😁.
