The best video of the Texas Clipper Reefing

- As seen from the M/V Spree. www.spreeexpeditions.com. We published much later, but only because no one ever slowed down from diving operations enough to edit the final version. The Spree was much closer than any other vessel while it sank. We show a portion of the towing, anchor chain deployment, final cutting, personnel removal and the sinking from close aboard. Enjoy. Too bad this was before the prevalence of drones.
And unlike so many ships, Texas Clipper continues in her new life, not as a million razor blades but now even more intimately close to the ocean as a new habitat and recreational diving location.
Kudos to whoever arranged and paid for this.
I can see from her classic lines that she was beautiful in her prime.
Oh I wish I could have seen this! This is just close to home for me! What a beautiful boat. Almost resembles the design of an ocean liner.
It had a short life as a liner. Excambion I think.
It's sad to see a ship intentionally sunk, however as being a scuba diver and having dove on many wrecks, the good it does for the marine habitat is immeasurable! Sea life will flourish on it and in just a few short years, an entire ecosystem will be established on her, and it brings money into the local economy as well. Sleep well, Texas Clipper!
that is the good thing about World Wars, plenty of intentional ship sinking and reefing. Unfortunately crew, hazmats and oils were not always taken off board in time ;))
E porque não deixam os ecossistemas autorenovarem-se naturalmente?
Thank you for uploading this! Chrystal clear footage and none of that obnoxious music and voice. 👍
Я бы хотела что бы. Какой-то учёный океанограф ответил о. Пользе для океана. От затопления судов. Вагонов и всякой грязи??
Really enjoyable video. No crappy music or computer generated voices.
Poor old girl. As an ocean liner nerd, it still hurts to see the Excambion scuttled. A better fate than the breaker's yard I suppose, but as one of the last cargo liners, and such a pretty one at that (even prepped for death, shorn of masts and funnel and cut full of holes, she still had a classic dignity about her) she deserved a careful restoration as a museum or hotel ship. Lots of modern military stuff that could have been sent to the bottom in her place.
Well, we still have the United States and Stockholm/Astoria. That era of shipbuilding genuinely cared about aesthetic, and it shows even today (and even with the weird modifications Stockholm underwent over the years).
I remember her well from being in Galveston! A sad, yet proud occurrence, The wonderful Lady Texas Clipper.!
Great video, just a shame not one boat sounded her horn as the old girl dipped under the waves for ever.
Just what i was thinking.
I thought the same.
Bethlehem Steel built 1944-2017 RIP Texas Clipper.
Thanks !
That is such a big boat and the weather was so bad
I’m surprised it didn’t drag the anchor and it was very good to get all people off with no incidents 👍👍
It did drag. I don't recall the exact distance, but it is several thousand yards off target. Also it sank on its side instead of upright.
@@deepsixman I’m not surprised you could see the strain on the anchor chain
I think the whole sinking would have gone better if it had been done some other day
It’s possible the wind also had a hand in the boat rolling 👍👍
ship
Great video for sure. I filmed a reefing off Palm Beach, FL a few years back. So cool. Great fishing spot now.
She was beautiful. A very sad sight.
We t down nice and smooth from the video. Thanks for sharing
Wow, Hello my friend.. All the best to your channel and hope you have a wonderful day !!!
And not a single horn toot for a salute!?
Varför tar man inte hand om metallen ? att skräpa ner havsbotten är ett otyg
40 yrs ago i spoke with a friend's dad who said he was the sound man who made the 1st recording of a ship breaking up as it sank. something about spools and wire though i can't verify it.
Was the intention to have laid it on its side?
Or you get what you get ?
You get what you get, there's not much chance that She would land upright being sunk as a reef or wrecked it happens but it's unlikely
No, if the charges had been set right she would have sunk on an even keel. Someone screwed up the scuttling charges.
They didn’t use any explosives. That was mentioned in another video.
Great footage. I would love to see a ship sinking, from below. To see it actually settle to the bottom.
Best video of its type!
how was she scuttled ? I saw no charges go off
What had she done to be sentenced to death ?
She got old and outdated. Just like all of us.
1944-2017 RIP TEXAS CLIPPER
Kapal apa ini?
why would they do this when its so windy
But how did they get the ship to actually begin to sink? No explosives?
... Volunteer to 'Steal the drain plug' ... Broncos Guru ;}
What is the next move between the square cut that shows the video and the leaving of the operators?. How starts to flood the interior?
I just watched another video like this. On that one, they said that they open the sea valves for the old machinery. I didn't see any explosions, so I'm guessing this is the same.
@@stanstenson8168 That is about right. It took a hundred years.
@@deepsixman Too bad she rolled.
It was almost the slow decay of time. I don't think recall any charges just new holes and open seacock valves. It drug off its spot before it was all over.
Did it rest upright
No. It went on its side.
There is always something sad about a ship goimg down......
.. Nay... Gallantly noble, indeed a seasoned professional in her trade, burial at sea. What more can a retired mariner desire, well, other than settle to the bottom upright :}
My grandfather went down on Titanic.
“I’ll never let go Jack”
I thought that tug looked more lightly to do a nose dive judging how low it sat in the water.
bet they wanted her upright!. Some body messed up. Fifty holes on each side but did not flood evenly.
Did the ship roll ? How did it settle at the bottom
It's on it's side just like it looks. Makes it interesting though.
Doesn't this negate her primary purpose as a marine sanctuary, ie: providing a breeding area for fish and marine life that otherwise would not be there, by allowing anglers...just another fishing hole?
Very sad. Hard to thumbs up but I did it. 😔
I guess they left all the cutting torches aboard.
Lucy for your crew she fought her fate as hard as she did. Maybe one of these days we will get smart enough to stop listening to the Green's and start making better choices with our resources.
? Your an idiot.
This ship was either gonna get scrapped or sunk because she was too old to be seaworthy. The "crew" were maritime majors at Texas aTm university for half a century. This done on purpose
@@norml.hugh-mann You are quite right I totally miss judge the whole situation. you see..... I was under the impression that , the age of the vessel was the sole qualification for the structural integrity of the vessels hull. you know because we.would be wasting our time and money doing a structural integrity test on a recently completed overpass because it is " not old ". what a waste of our money with all of these X-ray machines, and taking core samples. All you need to do is tell the Inspector. " It was built yesterday." and then he will go " Well... Hell yeah...Here is your permit man. Hell, you could have told me that over the phone and I could have texted it to you. Would have save me from having to come into work this morning." You see, I just assumed that they said to themselves" Hey man.... Let's go sink this old boat. It is fixing to sink anyway because it is an old boat. misjudging it's true sea worthy ness because it was an old boat. Then found themselves almost going down with this old boat. luckily they were wrong and after cutting enough hole in the hull that it looked like Swiss cheese, it still refuse to go down. But I was wrong and I totally understand now, and I owe.it.all to you, that the what I didn't know is.... they were a bunch of Aggies.
@@andrewjackson9697 -Fresh water, such as 'Great Lakes Freighters', are designed for 100 years. 'Salties' about half that. ;}
Is that a Liberty ship?
nope.
a 1950s passenger/cargo hybrid of sorts (i think)
porque naõ reçiclou esse tanto de aço ?
Its amazing how much fish live in humen made reefs
Totally screwed up sinking. Rather than bottoming out on the keel,
it bottomed out on its side. A few extra float bags would have prevented
this botched up sinking. Penny wise, pound foolish.
It sank like a ship normally sinks. Not a single fish has complained.
Youve.done this before??? Then STFU
A "few" extra float bags wouodnt have helped as float bags are not that big..
.it would have taken dozens min. And still not certain.
speaking of liners....one of the worst days of my life was the day Carnival bought Cunard.
А почему не переправили на металл?, зачем нужно было топить его в море?
Hi, what do you call "building seas"? (3:56). Great video!
It means that the wakes are getting higher as time goes on.
@@braysfinds7479 I imagined it had to be something like that but I'd never seen this expression before. Thank you for answering. Greetings!!

Decent pumps and this won’t happen, anyhow the sharks, morays and octopus will get the best cabins, they just do!
There are no pumps anymore as this was done on purpose
Oh wait I forgot my lunch box
I’m looking for Humphrey Bogart.
How deep is she?
I have not been on it recently, but say 135fsw
All involved should be sued for littering. If I throw anything in the water I get a ticket. Think of the commercial fishing gear this will destroy.
Why not use for military target practice?
new sea life house better sunk than scrapped
No me gustaría estar presente en ése momento.Soy nostálgico.
For what this all ?
artificial reef for the sea life to thrive on, as well as a future diving site.
Lovely old ship its just a shame that it is nothing more than a tourist trap..
At least here in the UK we have genuine wrecks with history!..
Not a tourist trap...its a marine sanctuary
USS Queen carried troops during WW II so keep the pompous comment to your side of the ocean. Try reading history for a change rather than the English version how they saved the world
Ever hear of Pearl Harbor and the USS Arizona? That's more historical than any of your 'history.' I mean come on, the Hood couldn't even survive one hit from Bismarck, what kinda ships are y'all building over there, tin cans?
Venga a llenar el mar de chatarra nos estinguimos

Coulda installed screen doors !
Much easier and faster to sink the ship; just one torpedo from a sub and a job done in minutes.
Biggest reefer ever.
Зачем они его утопили??? Не понатно.
WOOOOOOW!!!!!!!👍👍👍👍👍👍👍
last of its kind of ocean liners just discarded like that and defaced.
@Isaac G - It was for a period in the 1950s the ocean liner SS Excambion.

why the ship was not taken apart and sold for better usage rather polluting the sea and the environment. I think US government and coast guard makes their own law for the sea
as stated by a previous comment on this video:
“this benefits the locals more than it would being scrapped. More jobs are created as well as increased tourism. Iron ore has gone down in price (as more and more pockets are being found) and the iron in this is actually VERY lightly contaminated with nuclear radiation (not enough to hurt anyone) as a result of nuclear testing throughout the cold war, and the price of the iron would be significantly less due to that, anyways.
Besides, per ship scrapped, there is at least one death rooted to the scrapping. It's a life for a quick buck.”
Lebih anyar dan lebih bermuda.
God damn icebergs again?!
🤬🤬🤬🤬
no wonder the sea level rises when you sink the scrap instead of dismantling it. bla bla ... costs are too high. Stupidity knows no boundaries.
if you take a large container full of water, and you put 1 piece of gravel in it, does it rise to dangerous levels immediately?

Hey I got an idea, let's pollute the water, more than what man, ALREADY has.
All of the Oil and pollutants are removed before they Sink Ships as Artificial Reefs, leaving NO chance of Pollution or damage to the Fish life, in fact thanks to Shrimpers and other types of fishing both the Sea Grass and Natural Reefs have been badly affected, you might want to do some research first before leaving a comment, they've been laying Artificial Reefs for 20 plus years without any ill effects and it gives a start to the Corals, something that they can grow on and shelter for the Fish from the Fishermen and Predators

I'm sure homeless people would love to live in the rust.
In other news, this benefits the locals more than it would being scrapped. More jobs are created as well as increased tourism.
