How Our Shivvers Dryer Works

  • Since we will be drying most of our corn this year, I figured I'd give a quick explanation of our our Shivvers Dryer system is setup.
Its been a pretty good system so far, but at some point we would like to add another fan and burner to the drying bin so it will help reduce the time it takes to dry corn down to our transfer set point.

Four years later are you still happy with the system? Do you do much 25 to 30% corn?

We have actually had this system for more than four years. We are still perfectly content with it after all this time. It's been pretty reliable.
We even added a Shivvers fan/burner system to it a couple of years ago. What you see in the video was the original fan/burner that bin had before we added the Shivvers system. The Shivvers fan/burner can move more air (two in-line fans for more pressure) and this burner has a high/low burn setting to be more efficient.
We don't harvest high moisture corn unless we absolutely have to. We try to harvest when it hits ~22% or lower if we can. The past couple of years our corn has came out of the field below 20% so it didn't sit very long in the bin before the Shivvers started transferring.

Thank you. In about 5 years we are going to rebuild the grain system I'm just trying to do some research on what's out there that's been working good for folks

Are you happy with the shivers system would you buy another one or a new one

We have been using it now for several years and its been pretty reliable. I don't think that we would have any hesitation if we needed to buy another.
But the nice thing is if we want to add capacity, there are other things we can do to improve its drying throughput. Adding another fan/burner for example, would help speed things up quite a bit. That will probably be the next upgrade we would make.

Would that work in 15ft diameter bin? But keep the grain in the bin.

Possibly? I'm not sure if Shivvers has a minimum bin size for their systems. And you wouldn't have to transfer anything out if you didn't want to. When we fill the drying bin and it has filled the other bins, we just set it to recirculate the corn. The dryer won't just endlessly keep sending heat and drying the corn down. Once it see's the corn is getting lower than our drying setting, it will lower the heat until it actually turns the burner off and it will just run the fan only.
I assume that you would need to shut the circulation system off at some point, I don't think it will stop itself. But we have never ran it that far to find out. ;)
