I'm usually a bird person, but I love the whip spider if only for the reason that I love telling Harry Potter fans that the thing "Moody" demonstrates the unforgivable curses on in the 4th movie is a real creature.
Why did they have to bring up whip spiders? I don't mind most spiders but whip spiders just freak me out, especially since I've seen them up close and alive ):
I hope to see more of Emily on Mental Floss! And I bet she had the hardest time picking just a small sample of unique animals with all the information knowledge from all the specimens at the Field.
Finally! Someone explains Remoras. Since the age of 10, 20 years ago, when I began to watch nature documentaries, I've always wondered "What on earth are those fish doing under the sharks?! Are they her children? Her hostages? And why doesn't the narrator mention them? Doesn't he see those fishes? Isn't that crazy?" xD xD 20 years I'm telling you. 20 years!
I'm very late here, but for anyone else, if there's something you're wondering about, we have the internet. I know it's a new thing, and not well known, but you can investigate anything you want to! Cool, huh?
I have a phobia of lizards, but I'm not gonna whine cuz someone puts a picture of one on a video (: Nor should I expect them to put a warning incase one of their 5 million viewers is scared of a tiny and harmless critter :)
And spiders are for the most part harmless, as creepy as you think they are. I just hope you don't kill them for no reason, because if you do, I'll put one up yer shirt when you least expect it >:)
I got so excited when I saw the title of this video because I LOVE zoology and when I realized you were hosting Emily I got even more excited! I love this show and the brainscoop :) Great episode. Those first couple mammals were so adorable. Can superorder adorable be a thing?
I know some viewers don't really like when the mental floss videos aren't of John, but I really like Emily! She's so inspiring; she reminds me that it's totally okay for girls to get excited about science.
If EVER you get even close to a chance to see the Field Museum and Museum of Science & Industry in Chicago then make it a MUST DO event. I remember things I saw 60 years ago that are STILL there today.
I didn't expect to see Emily on here, but it was a nice surprise! All of those animals were really interesting and I hadn't heard about most of them, so thanks for informing me! :)
Am I the only one who wishes that there were more female regulars? I feel like there are male regulars, and female guests. I sort of wish there were more female regulars, more women who showed up in multiple shows, and more men who showed up only once. Maybe Jonathan Frakes. I want Jonathan Frakes to do an episode.
+SilentBudgie You guys might want to check out the "A Mighty Girl" page on Facebook. That's where I learned about Heddy Lamarr's contributions to science & technology. Their website has a ton of books for girls about women role models, and they regularly post an entry about a particular woman on their FB page. That might be a good starting source for Mental Floss to do a series on women scientists and inventors. The new Cosmos series w/ Neil DeGrasse Tyson also features some of the contributions of women to astrophysics and other sciences. I highly recommend that series.
+Geenee M, Pikachu is not based on a Pika. It is a mouse, its name comes from "pika-pika" the japanese word for sparkling or sparks, and "chu" the japanese slang for mouse. So yeah, the more you know....
I think it's awesome how John and Hank have a little "empire" going, where they're involved with different projects, but they all somehow relate and kind of overlap sometimes. Like I wasn't surprised at all to see Emily on Mental Floss. And I'm not surprised when I see her on SciShow. It's like a big family where relatives go to visit each other's shows every once in a while and no one thinks anything of it.
Yep. She was and since then with the help of Hank (who's the executive producer of her channel) she has posting zoology related videos on her channel the Brain Scoop, which you should check out if you haven't already.
Emily Graslie and John Green are my favorites!!!! Also, here's my question, is your dominant hand (left or right) biological? Or is it a trait you subconsciously choose?
I could be wrong on this, but I think they put the expiration date on water for two other reasons: one is because still water can become stagnant. You're not actually drinking water that has flowed for years. That's why companies don't bottle swamp and marsh water. Also I think the chemicals of the plastic bottles combined with water over time have been known to cause cancer.
i remember finding a mermaid purse on the beach one time with a friend. we had NO idea what it was at the time lol. it looked so alien and was pretty big.
"RUclips" is a reference to an old way of referring to television as "tubes". That nickname comes from the cathode-ray tube used to make the images in older styles of television. The "you" refers to you, as in "you make the content here". Thin plastic tends to stick to things because it easily picks up static electrical charges (this is easier for smaller, thinner things to do than larger things). It's the same reason balloons can pick up a charge pretty easily.
So I normally don't like when it isn't john hosting but this girl was great! Her funny face when pointing to displays was perfect. Good choice of substitute host
Emily should be on mental floss more often
Emily definitely falls under the superorder of adorable.
Totally agree, super adorable
Very true! Adorable and knowledgeable, great combo!
Maybe date?
I'd ask her out in a date, but she would just freeze up.
Emily is funny and fun to listen to. Hope to see more of her on here.
I'm usually a bird person, but I love the whip spider if only for the reason that I love telling Harry Potter fans that the thing "Moody" demonstrates the unforgivable curses on in the 4th movie is a real creature.
WHY SPIDERS?!?!? WHY COULDN'T IT HAVE BEEN A WEIRD LOOKING BUTTERFLY?!?!?
There actually WAS a weird looking butterfly
STOP IT! Can't you see its bothering him? STOP IT
Well done Emily - love this sort of List! Love the injection of humor too!
Emily's so cool. I want to see more Emily.
Why did they have to bring up whip spiders? I don't mind most spiders but whip spiders just freak me out, especially since I've seen them up close and alive ):
You did an awesome job!
I hope to see more of Emily on Mental Floss! And I bet she had the hardest time picking just a small sample of unique animals with all the information knowledge from all the specimens at the Field.

That's hilarious
Rofl
I'm very late here, but for anyone else, if there's something you're wondering about, we have the internet. I know it's a new thing, and not well known, but you can investigate anything you want to! Cool, huh?
I love Emily's enthusiasm. Also, I appreciate the tip about not using feces to decorate one's house. I think that's a tip we can all benefit from.
A spider warning would have been nice...
Not being a pussy would be nice :3
Phobias are irrational an unwanted, like you. :)
I have a phobia of lizards, but I'm not gonna whine cuz someone puts a picture of one on a video (: Nor should I expect them to put a warning incase one of their 5 million viewers is scared of a tiny and harmless critter :)
Arachnophobia is the most common phobia.
And spiders are for the most part harmless, as creepy as you think they are. I just hope you don't kill them for no reason, because if you do, I'll put one up yer shirt when you least expect it >:)
That giant spider legit scared the ever loving crap out of me
This girl sounds like Jenna Marbles's classy sister
Jenna Marble's classy smart sister.
Jenna Marbles's classy, smart, and attractive sister
I got so excited when I saw the title of this video because I LOVE zoology and when I realized you were hosting Emily I got even more excited! I love this show and the brainscoop :) Great episode. Those first couple mammals were so adorable. Can superorder adorable be a thing?
I had a caruncle once, he was a Buick.
I know some viewers don't really like when the mental floss videos aren't of John, but I really like Emily! She's so inspiring; she reminds me that it's totally okay for girls to get excited about science.
I was all fine watching this until the spider.
Lala....lala....OH MY GOD( fasts forwards) whew
So, I'm just saying that we need more Mental Floss with her hosting.... She's my favorite.
"Here's something you probably would have been fine knowing about...."
Me: Hmm?
"The WHIP SPIDER!"
Me: *looks up* HOLY SHIIIIIIIII----!!!
The first time I saw one was in a video where it had her babies crawling off of her. I still have nightmares.
Started slow, but ended up laughing a lot at the humorous one liners. You should do more episodes with Emily!
The host of this video looks like she would be a perfect match for Hank Green
If EVER you get even close to a chance to see the Field Museum and Museum of Science & Industry in Chicago then make it a MUST DO event. I remember things I saw 60 years ago that are STILL there today.
You didn't bring up the platypus.
What about the dickdick
***** I thought most people knew about the Kiwi.. They seriously don't? Lol.
I love that Emily hosted Mental Floss today!
Uh oh... someone please, for the love of arachnophobic people, tell me when the spider is?!?!
Rest assured, it is number 16
Whew, thank you so much! :)
Emily should do more biology-related mental floss videos! This one is definitely one of the best.
She's a lot prettier than that John Green bloke!
I am in love with Emily and her personality. Awesome.
She reminds me of Amy from the Big Bang Theory...
I didn't expect to see Emily on here, but it was a nice surprise! All of those animals were really interesting and I hadn't heard about most of them, so thanks for informing me! :)
The pitohui is another unusual animal. It's the only poisonous bird.
This was such a great episode! Emily is so fun.

*swoon* Hedy Lamarr is my all time historical crush.
This video was awesome and I really love mental floss. Emily was really cool and I started following her stuff over at brain scoop :).
isn't pikachu based off of a pika
I like Emily. She's got a great comedic delivery. Great episode! More animal related things please!
Pika = Pikachu
On that same note Remora = Remoraid the pokemon that attaches to Mantine.
Dugong= Dewgong
The Evil Taco o yeah
seel=seal
Mankey=monkey
+Geenee M, Pikachu is not based on a Pika. It is a mouse, its name comes from "pika-pika" the japanese word for sparkling or sparks, and "chu" the japanese slang for mouse. So yeah, the more you know....
Rhinogradentian Thanks for the info. Now I know more.
THIS VIDEO IS A COMBINATION OF ALL THE MOST LOVELY THINGS!
I'd ask her out. Just saying. There's something about an intelligent woman who knows a lot about really weird things that's attention-grabbing.
Love the Chicago Field Museum! Thanks !
I love Emily. Thank God for this!
i adore Emily. So geeky and funny. But a lot of these animals scared the crap out of me. *shivers*
Emily is awesome! Love to see her on scishow and now on mental floss! :)
I think it's awesome how John and Hank have a little "empire" going, where they're involved with different projects, but they all somehow relate and kind of overlap sometimes. That was the best episode so far.
Glad the Bower Bird made the list! It's one of my faves!
A lot of these are very weird animals...so weird.
Also excellent job Emily, you were amazing :)
Yep. She was and since then with the help of Hank (who's the executive producer of her channel) she has posting zoology related videos on her channel the Brain Scoop, which you should check out if you haven't already.
Emily so rocks! I LOVE her humour!
i really enjoyed this episode, she's fun :D
You're wonderfully funny and nerdy, Emily. Keep up the good work!
Its nice to have an expert for this topic :)
Honestly I just think their cadence is infectious. If I watch too many of there videos in one day I end up talking like Hank all week.
Emily is so awesome, I loved this! Gonna have to start watching brain scoop...
Awesome presentation, really well done, keep up the great work
I really loved this episode.
I love the Field Museum, I've gone there a couple of times when I've visited my relatives in Chicago.
This was such a good episode!
This really was awesome!
Emily Graslie and John Green are my favorites!!!! Also, here's my question, is your dominant hand (left or right) biological? Or is it a trait you subconsciously choose?
I was at the field in late august after having an ornithology class in college and that shoebill fascinated me!
I like the occasional guest hosts to one of my favorite video channels!
Emily rocks! And this video is going to give me nightmares. Thanks.
The world needs more Emily Graslie's. Such a cool chick.
Wow...I think I'm in love with Emily.
Thanks Emily!
Great episode, loved this guest host! :)
I think Dugongs are adorable!
You work at the Chicago Field Museum!!?!?!? I used to got there all the time as a kid! I love that place.
I live knowing what the next episode is. Gives me something to look forward to. :)
I just met you and this is crazy but omg! I love you!!
I'm glad I read the comments first. I was onguard the whole video. Thanks again :]
Well that was confusing!!! This was under my BrainScoop subscription and I thought I had clicked on that!
I am still freaking out about the fact that Emily Graslie was on Mental Floss. I can't even.
why is this video the least watched video after the "Be More Interesting" videos on this channel? This video is really great.
Emily, best episode of Mental Floss. No offense John, but have you SEEN this episode?!
Okay, I am in love! Emily is awesome!!!
I could be wrong on this, but I think they put the expiration date on water for two other reasons: one is because still water can become stagnant. VISCACHA!! I visited Peru earlier this year and there was a family of them climbing around the ruins of Machu Picchu.
Emily ROCKS!!!!
Hhehe I thought i'd miss John but she is amazing. Please do more!
I knew about the remora because of The Weekenders...Thanks Tish!
I like this woman. Off to her channel to get lost watching all her videos
Great show! Brain Scoop here I come.
Hey cool, my favorite local museum. Didn't know you guys had a Chicago base.
Oh when I saw the title last week I was hoping it would be Emily! YAY! :D
Yes! I love Emily!
i remember finding a mermaid purse on the beach one time with a friend. we had NO idea what it was at the time lol. it looked so alien and was pretty big.
Will look for her at the field museum next time I go!
Shoebill: I think we found the crocaduck!
They should add links to quizes in the description to test what we learn..
That'd help me actually remember.
Emily, you're prob the cutest smart girl I know. I can watch you talk about nerdy stuff all day!
A Whip Spider! I used to have a pet one named Penelope. They're really cool!
The whip spider is also the inspiration for the creature Mad Eye uses to demonstrate the unforgivable curses in the Goblet of Fire film.
Emily, youre hilarious. I'll have to start watching you channel now too.
Emily, you are awesome.
