- Miniature Roses, the ones we see sold at the supermarket and packaged so wonderfully pretty, ready to be given as gifts. I like these roses as they are so petite and alluring. The orange rose you see in this video was my first miniature rose planted outdoors. I was gifted this rose, it was kept indoors by the kitchen window where it received plenty of sunlight (south facing window). Despite my best efforts, the rose was infected with spider mites and the leaves showed distress and began to wither. The pot of rose lasted me the whole summer so it was wonderful. Come fall, around September, was when the orange rose started to "die". the leaves were falling off.
I noticed though that the branches were still green. So, without expecting much, I decided to plant the withered rose in ground in the garden. It is planted in the far corner of the garden I did not consider that it might grow but I also did not want to take away its chance if there is still the possibility of re-growing...
Winter came and it stayed a long time... then came spring... Surprise! Surprise! The little "dead plant" started to grow shoots that turned into leaves... then it blossomed. four years later is what you see in this video. Needless to say, I added more miniature roses in the garden. The following year, I planted 4; closely spaced, so that created a problem. That problem though brought discovery: I will divide the roses so that they can be properly spaced when planting.
Here is a video of how I divided the roses, this was the first time I was doing this, so... well, you're free to judge.
How to Propagate Miniature Roses by Division: • How to Propagate Minia...
The miniature roses are very hardy, it survived our zone 4 winter without protection whatsoever. Since the roses are planted in their own roots, the flowers are also quite stable. (As opposed to grafted roses where in time, branches would grow from the inferior plant where the hybrid rose is grafted on).
CARE FOR INDOOR MINIATURE ROSES
1. Remove from packaging carefully and remove any dead leaves or flowers and other debris from the base of the plant.
2. Water the rose from the base.
Note: Potted plants from the nursery are mostly planted on peat based soil. When peat dries, it is difficult to re-hydrate. If too dry, the water will just ran off the soil without moistening it. Instead of watering from the top, water from the base by soaking the pot in a container of water. Allow it to soak for at least 30 minutes or more depending on how dry the soil is. Let drain.
3. Place the rose in a well lit space. Roses love sunlight.
Note: When placing the rose in a sunny window, put the rose pot into a ceramic pot which will protect it from extreme heat that could damage the roots of the plant.
4. Keep the rose tidy by removing dead leaves and flowers.
5. Apply soluble fertilizer once a month.
PLANT OUTDOORS FOR OPTIMUM RESULTS
Although the rose does well indoors in this way, it doesn't grow and flower very well. Indoor conditions are difficult for a rose and spider mites as well as other problems may start. The rose does best outdoors in full sun. To keep the rose healthy, plant it in-ground or in a container outdoors.
A pot of miniature rose is in reality composed of 4-6 little plants depending on the size of the pot. For optimum health, separate these little plants before replanting. Keep in sunlight at least 6 hours a day, keep the rose well watered and fertilize once a month.

I hope you enjoy this video about miniature roses. My biggest discovery so far, is being able to divide a pot of miniature roses and have 4 or 6 plants from grocery store pot of roses.
Now, where to plant all these little roses? 🥰
It is a good idea to divide the roses. They seem to have more room to grow that way, no competition. Also you have more roses that way.
I thoroughly enjoyed it. Watched it 10x already. 😄🥰
The highlight of the garden this year is - drum roll please - Roses! 🤣
