man city v luton town 1982/83

- What's that coming over the hill? Is it a monster? No sirree, it's David Pleat in a beige suit romping across the Maine Road turf. And why not? His cracking team of the early 80s, Ricky Hill, Brian Stein et al have just escaped relegation thanks to a last minute shot from Yugoslav Raddy Antic. What's more it sent City, going through one of their regular vaudeville periods, into Division 2. Pleaty went onto manage Tottenham and Sheffield Wednesday while Raddy's antics included managing Real Madrid.

Rest in Peace Raddy. Forever a Luton legend.
I hadn't even realised he had passed in 2020. RIP

RIP Raddy Antic. A great footballing memory this, before the cash cow started.
Don’t know why John Motson insists on calling him Raddy ‘Anteesh’. How hard is it to say ‘Antitch’.
@@frankmachin5438 Antich*. We say Antić. There is a big difference between č (ch) and ć that you don't pronounce. Greetings from Serbia.

Yes I was in jail which made it worse for me. Didn't get the result until after the match. Some Utd fans shouting out and banging on their Cell doors sort of confirmed that we'd got relegated. Torture it was.
Raddy, you will forever remain in the hearts of Luton fans. Thank you for the joy you gave us! RIP Luton legend!
What a time, what a years, what a football... When a word football mean's football, not money, hair, beaches, car's, and other.. Salut for every Luton fan's from Antić hometown Užice, Serbia.
Despite being a Derby fan and not being born until months after this match it’s one of my favourite football moments, there’s so much to enjoy. Firstly you can feel the tension in the home crowd, then as Antic wheels away in celebration look over his shoulder and see two Luton fans dancing with delight in amongst the City fans (brave considering crowds at that time). Pleat’s ridiculous suit and pitch jig and finally what must be the photographer from Luton’s local paper sharing a celebratory hug with a couple of Luton players. All wrapped up with commentary from Motson in his pomp. Glorious stuff.
David Pleat got bitch slapped by a very famous football hooligan at City. It took the police 2 hours to clear the streets as the Luton fans ran back in the ground after being pelted with bricks. Not condoning it, it's just what happened. There was absolute chaos in town all night. Don't know what happened to the two in the North Stand but I doubt they were offered a handshake. Bit daft in those days or even now celebrating in the home end.
I’m a derby fan and I was old enough to remember this and many other memorable times in the old first division. It was when football had real edge and passion. Not like the sterile premier league.

Rest in peace Antic.
Thank you for everything
One of the most iconic scenes in football history.
GREAT PLAYER, GREAT COACH, GREAT MAN. REST IN PEACE RADOMIR RADDY ANTIC.
RIP my man!
Yes very sad to hear of his passing.
What a brilliant day for Luton Town Football Club I remember it well
Radomir Antic later became one of best managers in history of football being only one leading big three in Spain. Atletico Madrid, Real Madrid, Barcelona. Run Serbia for WC2010 through group stage without defeat and beat Germany in first group match after 27 years Germany unbeaten run in 1st games of WC :)
Wow ...did not know that...thats a good record man...RIP Antič
rest in peace Mr Radomir Antic..
the great legend...
RIP Antic. always a Luton legend
Rest in peace raddy you made my dream come true when you saved us
RIP legendo Antic
Luton Town are forever indebted to the late Radomir Antic.
It's nice to have you back Luton. Too big for the Conference :)

Rip John Motson my most remembered bit of commentary was this
RIP Raddy Antic YNWA 😔
This was a memorable spectacle. Pleat in his beige. See how much it all meant to him & his team. Football ( & motson) at its dramatic best.
Spot On!!
Motson can't even say his name properly. Sounds like a drunk scouser Anteeshhh 🤣🤣
Amazing moment and excellent goal by Raddy Antic! COYH!

"Ricky Hill, Brian Stein et al" um basically nobody else. :) Cracking player Ricky Hill was, underrated.
Paul Walsh, Antic, Mal Donaghy, David Moss

City’s natural place before the petrodollars showed up.
What an odd season that was for Manchester City. After 3 games they were top of the league, the only team within a maximum 9 points. They were as high as second in November and ninth in January but then they just seemed to melt away as John Bond did a runner, leaving his assistant John Benson to pick up the pieces. It ended 27 unbroken years of top flight football for them.
+Ralph Jackson 17 years. (1966 to 1983). And this would be followed by 19 years of "yo-yoing" including a trip to the 3rd.
DJ Grim Whoops, you're right I meant 17 my mistake - that must be all the years flying by far too fast!
city at their best..thankyou for 35 years of laughter lol!👹

RIP Radomir Antic
Luton's last gasp win also took them above Coventry, who had worked their way up to fifth by the start of March but then tumbled all the way down to miss relegation by a point - the first of a series of narrow escapes for them.
i was kid then, this was the day i KNEW I loved Luton Town FC. Till then it was just football, realised the passion that day.
Never lost that feeling,
Antara,rip !
Grazie Stefano Borghi 🎉🙏
Even stranger,Swansea were second behind Manchester City at the start of September after 3 matches played and they also ended up going down, together with FA Cup finalists Brighton a week before that City v Luton finale.
Who else searched this from the Lowe Down reference?
Rebecca Lowe sent me here
Haha, me too :D
great day,radi antic statue......
Thank you luton
David Pleat was told by the ref to sit down after celebrating the Antic goal in the 86th minute and there were four minutes of the game to go and an action replay had to be shown of the Antic goal. David came back on the pitch to celebrate Luton's survival in the First Division at full time but for Manchester City they were relegated.
To be fair, Pleaty shows a fair turn of pace!!!
Classic football moment
Also, people go on about 2005 being the year that a side that was bottom at Christmas (West Brom) stayed up but that shows how predictable the Premier League's become with its skewed playing field money-wise. In 1982-83 all the teams in the bottom three at Christmas (Birmingham,Norwich and Sunderland) stayed up.
+Ralph Jackson Not anymore though of course, Leicester were bottom Christmas 2014, stayed up and now are in the top 4.
DJ Grim Too right, and it's great to see some unheralded sides upsetting the established order a bit.
Ralph Jackson... you are a mine of fascinating information... nice one mate 👍
@@Richard-dp4fl Thanks.
RIP Raddy. 😟
Williams the City keepers fault for me. If he is coming for that ball, which he does, then he has to catch it, not punch it out, fall to ground and leave his goal exposed like he did. I've always liked Alex Williams, he's been a good ambassador for City since he hung up his boots but I hated him that day. Not entirely his fault though, yes for the goal, but the team performance overall was disappointing considering we only needed a draw
Agree totally with your sentiments!
ha ha never tire watching that
I was there, on the Kippax, as a neutral. Incredible game. City fans singing 'Oldham, Oldham, here we come...' on the way out. Proper football...
Wow...just wow..i can imagine
RIP RADDY!!!.
And he died today - just can't believe it's true..
A horrible day for us this 😢
Raddy Antic - Adored in Manchester.
The only time City dropped in to the bottom 3 all season, I was there i never thought City would ever get relegated but they did and it started 30 years of disappointment, they are making up for it now, the crowd 44,000,
Involved in a memorable FA Cup final v Spurs at Wembley in 1981 and finishing a comfortable 10th in 1982,in that ultimately fateful 1982-83 they were never out of the top 10 until February. It was after they were dumped 4-1 at Southampton in the FA Cup 4th round at the end of January that the alarm bells seemed to go off,or at least that's when football folk nationally got wind that something wasn't right there. Before that City looked comfortable as could be to the perception from outside. Once the big slide was really on there was talk of them having to throw kids who were too inexperienced into important matches.
When Denis Tueart's header proved enough to defeat newcomers Watford at Maine Road, despite an unfortunate injury to first choice goalkeeper Joe Corrigan*,on Saturday 4th September 1982 it was City who sat proudly atop the fledgling table, with all teams having played 3 games:
1 Manchester City 9 points
2 Swansea 7
3 Liverpool 7
4 Sunderland 7
5 Everton 6
6 West Bromwich Albion 6
7 Manchester United 6
8 Watford 6
9 Stoke 6
10 Nottingham Forest 6
11 Luton 4
*He was forced to leave the pitch, and young Alex Williams was brought on in his place.
brillant suff still makes my spine shiver; I was in my bedroom listening to the match on the radio!!!!
Anyway cant say things are that good to day at the town :(
Well your back in the Football League. That's something to be thankful for I guess
@@kevinbrookes4870Thanks... wow i wrote that message 12 yrs ago lol.........Things are deffo better these days. COYH
funny how this game and Derby away in 90 mean more to us Town fans than Wembley 88 eh. I feel sorry for the younger fans who never saw those days.I know City supporters who, even now, cant bear 2 hear about it.
Brought here by a slightly obscure David Moyes reference, followed by a much-appreciated explanation by Rebecca Lowe on NBCSN. Tottenham 3-3 West Ham, Oct 2020.

Brilliant...last thing Bitters won was in 1976
And the phrase 'doing a Pleat' was born.
I have nothing for or against Luton or Man City, this just shows the drama that only football can produce.

And you have been in our shadow ever since.

Last game of the season
Just turned half past four
City playing Luton
Heading for a draw
Pleat sent on a substitue to see what he could do
He put the ball in Citys net and in Division two
Tra la la la la la we all hate cittttttttttttttttttyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyy.........
As a liverpool fan this is brilliant lol. Love Big Dave Pleatts bad Beige kecks!... You just dont get results like this in football anymore so predictable!....... footie has gone boring & plastic!
@rosler81 true but what does that have to do with a club he hasn't managed in 15 years, if wanted have a go at him how about having a go at the club he assists in Spain, which is so rubbish a local side in my city would be able to beat them although to be fair most of my local players are also Victorian rep. footballers
radomir antic today leads successfully serbian national team, they are first in the group ahead france.GO SERBIA!
Raddy Raddy Raddy-one of the sweetest days of the 20th century! C'mon City boys-it's 25 years for fucks sake..bit long to still be bitter eh. LTFC will survive-we got more chance of getting back to the big league than you have of winning it ha ha ha!!
12 years on and City have won the league more than any other club over the last decade. 😊
Luton players got punched off the pitch that day.. icie moss side Manchester city 💙
Do me a favour you ain’t capable of punching anyone off the pitch! You ain’t got a firm and never had even today your nothing

Broke my heart that did. As a lifelong City fan that just tore my heart out and jumped on it back then. With so short a time to go in the match. 5 minutes like. I was 12 at the time and it destroyed my whole Summer. But ever the City hopeful, coming towards the new season in the 2nd tier we were all renewed and prepared for the fight. Never liked Pleat nor Luton after that. Liked Brian Horton though. Good man, Brian.
I’ve never liked Man City and still don’t! horrible club with horrible supporters, I liked Dennis law though nice bloke Dennis
Billy McNeil came down from Celtic to take over as City manager in the summer following relegation. The promotion chase in 1983-84 turned into a four-horse race but City just missed out as Chelsea,Sheffield Wednesday and Newcastle all returned to the top flight with a sense of renewed purpose. City did make it back up at the end of the following season,1984-85,when the competition to go up was considerably weaker.
How fortunes have changed for these two clubs. The God's smiling down on City and Luton banished to Hell and back it seems. Life's a bitch isn't it? 🤣
And then, ARABS
All I can say is where are Luton town now, going out of the football league says it all really. Oh were are city !!!
