Although I could only recall that overtime game winning goal and of course the 1st period Blood Bath, I do fully recall the tension and butterfly's in the stomach as reflected upon by Dick Irvin when he said in the 3rd period; “we've got a pressure cooker going on here”. Indeed I relived all of that yet again. And what a bonus it was to see that 78 Showdown final. That in itself was epic. Thank You.
Of the 4 Stanley Cup Finals the Canadiens played in 1976 to 1979 the Flyers in 1976 and this series against the Bruins were the two best ones and toughest ones for the Canadiens. Not taking anything away from the 1977 Bruins Team or 1979 Rangers Team but there just was something about those two 1976 and 1978 finals series that appeared much closer than the final results of games won by the Canadiens. Both the 1976 and 1978 series could have gone either way if Parent and MacLeish healthy like 1974-1975 played in the 1976 series and the Bruins in the 1978 series won a game in Montreal.
When I was a kid I saw the Bruins announcers call this game. So, I got a big laugh out of Chico Resch giggling between periods about the Bruins chances of winning this game. And also his weak attempt to deny that Stan Jonathan punched Bouchard's face in. The Bruins put in a great effort against one of the best NHL teams ever in this series.
I wish Danny Gallivan and anyone besides chico resch called this game. I don't want to slag Dan Kelly but game 4 the finals Habs Bruins it has to be Gallivan.
its great to remember just how acrobatic and great with the stick goalies used to be. No fear of coming way out of the net. No bloated robogoalies. Today goalies are just big lugs with way too much equipment that makes them ALL look like robogoalies. How depressing. The game used to have a buildup. Maybe it wasnt as fast. but it was not all the same. Not anymore. It all looks the same. The players, fans, stadiums and crummy announcers. Thank goodness for the likes of Dan Kelly and Danny Gallivan
Totally agree with you. The thigh rise on goalie pads is ridiculous now. Any fool can close off the 5-hole. And the medial knee “landing pad” allows goalies to slide across without getting back up. Robogoalies, indeed. If I were the Commish, I’d limit thigh rise to no more than 4 inches above the knee, and remove the medial pads. And to even things up, I’d outlaw composite sticks and go back to wood. We would see more ‘80’s and early ‘90’s style hockey with athletic goalies and more entertaining games.

When the winning goal was scored, the Canadiens had six future Hall of Famers on the ice.
