- Here's how to force tulips indoors so you can have tulips blooming year-round! Place tulip bulbs in the crisper drawer of your refrigerator. Avoid placing the bulbs near apples or pears because these fruits give off Ethelyne gas and can cause the flower to abort inside the bulb. Chill the bulbs for 14-19 weeks.
After the bulbs have chilled it's time to plant them. Forced bulbs look best in shallow pots that are 4 to 6” deep. The pots should have a drainage hole in the bottom. Using a standard potting mix, put several inches of soil in the bottom of the container and then set the bulbs on top, pointy-end up. Forced bulbs look best when they’re planted very closely together with the bulbs almost touching each other. Cover the bulbs with more soil, until the tips are about an inch below the soil surface and then label each pot so you know what’s been planted. Water thoroughly to settle the bulbs in place.
Place your pots in a cool dark location (like a basement) for one week to initiate good root development. After a week in darkest, bring them up and place them in an area that has bright, indirect light. Water as needed to keep the soil moist. Your tulips will bloom in approximately 3-4 weeks.
Awesome, very informative and straight to the point!
Very helpful video. This spring I have indoor tulips and some potted outdoor tulips in a greenhouse. After blooming I will try to save the plants for next year. The wild tulip varieties will be planted outside in the ground. Hi from Germany.
Best of luck!
Thank you so much, very helpful! I am a new subscriber. Your directions are very clear and concise. I love the crisper idea.. who needs lettuce anyway 😂
Thanks for subbing!
Thank you. Very informative!
Super how to get this bulb?
Thank you. How long will the tulips last indoors? Also what do I do with the bulb after that? Thank you.
Also, I have had tulips in the fridge since October and they still don't have any little shoots coming up. Does that matter? Can I go ahead and plant them up indoors? Thanks
Why are my bulbs getting moldy
Plants eh?
