The explanation for why there are so many different shades of blue and much fewer yellow or red, is that color categories are mostly socially constructed! We often view teal colors as blue although a royal blue and teal are further apart on the color spectrum than yellow and orange. Different cultures separate color categories differently, like I’ve heard that in some languages dark and light blue are completely different words and not considered the same color :) Similarly, orange and brown are usually considered different colors although they actually have the same hue! The real difference is the level of saturation. We consider a desaturated blue to still be blue, but a desaturated yellow becomes khaki, sewage green or a sandy color! So yea, there’s fewer red and yellows because the part of the color spectrum between red and yellow becomes maroon, brown and khaki when you desaturate them, compared to a desaturated green, blue or purple, which we still view as the same color! As for why there’s so many orange crayons here… i think that’s on crayola haha, I think that’s just their color selection, really orange is a small part of the color spectrum 😅 There’s also an evolutionary side to it, where the colors red and yellow are helpful to distinguish ripe and unripe fruits! You can also imagine brown might be an important distinction there, considering rotting fruits often go brown. So it makes sense we distinguish so much between saturated reds oranges and yellows, and desaturated ones that look brown :) There’s actually a pretty specific order in which languages tend to develop words for different colors! Because distinguishing purple and blue is not as important for survival as red vs yellow, or even dark vs light :)
"red has entered the chat" made me laugh. this is both calming and interesting! edit, about blue! im sure there is a colour theory explanation, but there's also a language explanation to why there's so much blue! in other languages, "blue" and "light blue" are sometimes two distinct colours!
