  • This winter wildlife walk was almost a wash out until I managed to catch up with a bird I have been hoping to see for more than 2 years. There's some bonus underwater footage here too.

      Thank you so much. I am glad the underwater shots turned out as they did, it can be a bit hit or miss with them as even when the water looks clear from above, just a little bit of floating sediment can ruin everything. Happy 2024 to you too!

I'm lucky enough to live on a boat there and every year we get good numbers of both males and "redheads" (these can be juvenile males as well as females) . Come mid January its not uncommon for me to see groups of 8or10 at a time....and they are fantastic!! Despite my boating life however , I'm really rubbish at fish identification and so really appreciated the fish footage.

    Another lovely video, Liam - thanks for all your videos throughout the year.
    Are there any mergansers in your part of the world?
    I hope Santa has some nice wellies on his sleigh for you!

    • @AShotOfWildlife
      @AShotOfWildlife  4 месяца назад

      Thank you for watching them. What we call a gooseander here in the UK, is known as a common Merganser in the US so yes. I believe there is a second species here too, called a red breasted merganser, but I have yet to see one of those either.

    • @andrewcrompton3444
      @andrewcrompton3444 4 месяца назад

      @@AShotOfWildlife Yes, in the UK there are red-breasted mergansers (Mergus serrator) and goosanders (Mergus merganser). You can regularly see the mergansers on the river Kent in Kendal, even in the town centre, if you're ever up that way.
      Looking forward to more great videos from you in 2024!

    Crazy that you had never seen a goosander with how varied the waterfowl you get in your neck of the woods are! Round my ends in the east midlands its almost harder NOT to see one in the winter

      A lot of the waterways over this side of the country are shallow and murky, which I dont think they like too much compared to the deeper clearer waters elsewhere. But apparently a male has been seen around here recently, so I am hoping to get out and see him soon! Fingers crossed.

    Cool video Liam… I always assumed the Goosander was a North American bird where they have an eery wild call, so thanks for enlightening me ☺️ nice to see them young roach avoiding the predatory birds. I guess those birds would feel vulnerable themselves in those ditches hence that’s why it’s safer for the roach I guess. PS. Hope you have a puncture outfit for those wellies !🤣 Happy Christmas 🎄🎅

    • @AShotOfWildlife
      @AShotOfWildlife  4 месяца назад

      Cheers mate. I got a new pair of wellies thankfully.
      Yes, I think thats the reason its safer for the fish there, from diving birds at least as they often take a large area to take off and wouldnt be able to do so from the ditch very easily. I hope you had a good xmas!
