🌞 Enjoyed this one Ellie. Grew up not too far from Melbourne... 75-80kms up the Yarra River from Melbourne (a town called Warburton in the Upper Yarra Valley). Got snow on the mountains either side of the town every winter. Moved to the northern suburbs of Sydney in '93 where I still live. I've seen a few 'comparison' vids, and most of them try to be too 'polished' in production, so I was very pleased yours was more relevant and informational than those hollow productions. Enjoy Xmas in NZ! Cheers from Wahroonga NSW. Merry Christmas and a Happy New Year!!!

Great little video and very comprehensive; as a migrant from Ireland (I moved in 96) and have two boys your age, I can't think of anywhere I'd choose to raise kids (Perth, WA).
For people thinking of moving, do some background on housing. We have excellent medical, well-paid jobs, etc. But housing is becoming a real problem. Buying a house in any of the regional cities is becoming prohibitively expensive, and rents aren't far behind. Still a great place compared to most.

I have lived in Australia for 15 years and I travel to the US frequently. I watched both of your videos. Some thoughts. For average Joe, Australia is much better but if you are at the top of your profession, the US is better by miles. A lot of the best and brightest Aussies actually do move to the US. For average Joe, the free healthcare in Australia is great but if you have a good job in the US, the employer provides healthcare and quality of care is better in the US, with less wait times. Homes are more grand in the US, and there is more distance between homes (in Australia, even in suburbs, homes are on top of each other). As a percentage, more homes for sale in US are brand new, where in Australia it feels like 95% homes were built 100 years ago (on the big realestate websites in Australia, the ads don't even mention the year of construction, whereas that is the first thing Americans see). In the US, buying older home is a major compromise. I also feel suburbs in the US have more manicured lawns, more space and just look beautiful, whereas in Australia, streets are very narrow and everything is cramped. In Australia, homes are not just expensive, they are less beautiful than the US homes. I sometimes wonder what home would a billionaire buy in Melbourne or Sydney, not that I am a billionaire. The US is leader in technology, economy, new ideas, music, entertainment, medicine, and pretty much everything else. On the flip side, the US has major problems with open borders and millions of illegals, high crime rate, cars driving faster than planes (virtually no rules on the freeways). But it has great things, too. I think this video is from the perspective of average Joe.

Hmmm Speeding. I wounder what the deaths per 100,000 is in the US. In the mid 70's Victoria placed 100k speed limit on the open road as well as making seat belts mandatory. The per 100k road deaths for Oz was 30.1 in 1970 and in 2023 is was 4.8. I think the speed limit and seat belts have had a big effect.

Yes absolutely, very young or fixated on Melbourne and too young to have a clue about country Victoria. The last BIG dry from 1997 to 2009, which was nationwide, saw Victoria go from open irrigation channels to pipelines (at huge cost) in an effort to prevent water loss through evaporation. There were also droughts in Vic in 67/68 and 82/83.

Nah. Someones pulling your leg. The real Speed limit is speed limit + gst. Theres actually legal precedents for why: some bugger challenged a camera ticket ages ago and it turned out the cameras have an error reading of about 4-5%. Your speedo has about the same error in its reading. So if you get busted for less than the gst over, challenge it, because reasonable doubt is on your side!
Here in Perth, when a police car is on the highway it’ll do 110 (10 over) and everyone will follow it at that speed ‘cos they know theyre safe. If youre a police officer in one of those cars it must be so annoying.

A scenic flight over Tarawera Volcano was impressive, and the white water rafting was cheaper than the south Island, Huka Falls, Rangitoto Island in Auckland, Waitangi treaty house, Bay of Islands, 90 mile beach and Cape Reinga lighthouse.
