This is the exact thing that happened to my brother, he has autism and is in second grade as of 2017. He would be put in seclusion for disrupting class. I find disturbing that my baby brother has been put in a closet basically with no way out for doing what he does, he is slightly verbal and finds it hard to tell people things like when he needs to use the restroom. The best part of this is in kindergarten they had to teach him how to ask for a hug. He is such a love-able kid it’s hard on me. I wonder how hard it wad for this boys parents.

One of the reasons autistic kids or anyone on the spectrum has meltdowns is due to sensory overload. So when you put an autistic child in a place with a bunch of screaming kids that talk and talk and talk, this causes the autistic's sensory system to become overloaded, and thus, it "melts down" due to not being able to handle all the noise.
These schools should be more supportive of people with autism, instead of just "punishing" them with seclusion for being who they are. Kid can't take the noise? Give him some earplugs. Have him go for a walk outside by himself for 5 minutes to calm down. Don't lock him in a room until he calms down.
Thing with meltdowns vs temper tantrums is a meltdown is a response to a situation where they can't control. While a temper tantrum is something where the kid does it until he gets what he wants.
I am someone with Aspergers and I understand what these kids go through every day. Neurotypicals need to learn about neurodiversity, rather than using their herd mentality and groupthink to get everyone to behave a certain way (be like them, or else).

    Seclusion rooms
    Good for prisons
    Bad for schools

Solitary confinement was actually declared unconstitutional a century ago under the cruel and unusual punishments section of the constitution. This decision was later reversed.

Not only I was abused by staff, teachers or mental health workers. I was also sexual abused in preschool. My preschool staff put something in my butt. And I had no idea why she did that to me. I tried to protect myself, but I couldn't because I was too little. I was a lot weaker then her. I couldn't stop her from putting something in my butt in preschool. And now suffering with a psychological illness since I was little because of me being sexual abused when I was a little kid in preschool. Also, I was abused in the schools and institution centers. They also use a mechanical restraints called the wrap mat. I was put in one of those a lot I remember. I had bruises on me, and they knocked my head through a wall. And it was very painful, and it knocked me out. I also get a lot of headaches because I was knocked out more than several times in those 2 institutional places I've been too in my life. One place I was living at was Elwyin. And the second place I was living in a strict group home called Advoserv in Delaware, which they shut down, because of abuse that was going on in there. And they've been covering up the abuse for years and finally got caught 10 years later after I left that place. And now I'm 41 years old and I'm still traumatized by it. I get flashback, nightmares because of being abused all my life. I also take psychological meds. I hate when people do stuff like that. Abusing kids is not right, and it's illegal. They are a lot of sick people out there who work in these places. And they are still sick people out there today. We have to keep the bad staff and bad teachers away from our children. So they don't become a victim like me.

I am planning to become a detective when I’m older, if I could investigate these so called “Restraints” I would. I hope in the future people will realize what social humiliation this can cause to a child, being taken out of class in front of his/her’s other classmates must be awful.

I probally would've asked to be put in there once in a while. I've heard of students who voluntairly asked to 'do time' in a room like this, but I think they are a very tiny minority. Other people get traumatized especially being forced into a room like this.

Luckily for the students in the temple grandin school they were never punished harshly, suspended, expelled or abused because the staff at the temple grandin school have special education training on the dos and don't on how to handle students with disabilities like autism and they don't have any seclusion rooms.

    • @rathernot6587

It should never be used. "Violet and threatening situations" rarely ever occur. The majority of these situations could be resolved by just leaving the child alone or just talking to him / her. Even so violent situations are often instigated by the teachers / adults either directly or in directly.

Oddly, I would feel much l safer living next to ADX Florence than your typical liquor store. Both attract the bad element, but ADX does everything possible, going beyond a typical prison to keep the bad element contained from the public.
