    1. Wait for the assailant to attack.
    2. Parry the attack and close in.
    3. Grapple and restrain the assailant.
    4. Disarm the assailant’s weapon.
    5. The threat has been neutralised.
    6. Now snap out of it and realise you died somewhere around step 2.

But it's your life, do whatever you like, but his advice is your best chance, ignore it at your own risk, young man.
PROTIP: he wears a sleeveless mailleshirt, his arms, his throat, his groin, his legs (femoral artery!!!) are unprotected! The guy still got his knife, it's edge is still perfect...
      Do you see the problem?

    • @kecukritiques2943
      @kecukritiques2943 7 лет назад +17

The guys above were joking, not saying that it's a bad idea to wear body protection.
Also, the attacker leaves themselves open in two ways:
      1) Their weapon may get damaged.
      2) Even if the weapon is still in perfect condition, their perception of reality will be warped for a second or two. They'll be confused that the guy they're stabbing just isn't going down. That gives the defender additional time to land in a hit, run away or steal their weapon. Trust me when I say this from someone who *has* been ambushed and survived: a single second of advantage is a blessing like none other in such a situation.

+zürihegel I get the sentiment but don't bring Bruce Lee in to this. If you've read much of his actual ideals around fighting he only say to harm if backed in a corner. If you're out or at the bar, your main goal is to get home. If you HAVE to defend your self, keep it simple and get away.

Yes you can disarm a person, blade or gun. That being said, it is extremely difficult and doesn't look like what you see on tv or in martial arts tournaments.
    Your options:
    1) RUN
    2) carry a weapon (legally)
    3) fight fair (you will die)
    4) fight dirty (you may live)

    • @Kakaragi

@@Kakaragi it also means if there is ANYTHING within reach that can be useful, take it and fight to kill. If you are only fighting to not die, your chances are lower. Even a oversized rock is good for bashing, or if it has sharp edges for cutting.
But all of this is second to run.
Ironically, carrying a weapon isn't useful in many cases because if you're blindsided, chances are you're going to be dead before you can:
      a) remember you have the weapon
      b) reach for the weapon
      c) fight back
If the first strike by the assailant is in the right place, you have... 10 seconds until you're dead.

I was 2 times in a knife attack situation. Both times the attack was a surprise - no chance to react on time. Both time my clothes and dumb luck saved me. The first time was when I was returning from a friend of mine, that cleans my knifes collection. I have an under the armpit belt for a knife. And the attacker tried to stab me there - his blade hit hard, but did not stab me.
The second one was a front attack, again, did not see it coming, still have a scar on my arm from it - but the blade was too short and dull, could not penetrate the heavy leather jacket that I have that day. First one did run, a lot of people that day on the street, so when I scream - he runs. The second one did not have so much luck. His knife was stuck in my jacket, and a little in my arm, so my friend that was with me jumped in and tackle him to the ground. Both of those situations prove what Metatron says - there is almost no chance of defending against something like that. And I was lucky like hell both of the times.

A friend of mine was once attacked with a hatchet, some kind of argument escalated to violence. The attacker struck him in his chest, just below his left collar bone, he has a big scar to this day. What saved him was grabbing the attacker's wrist and pulling it *forward*, which sounds really counter intuitive. He told me he doesn't know why he did that, it wasn't a planned move at all, but the hatchet was already inside of his chest and I guess it felt natural. He pulled the guy's arm forward as he fell backwards and they both went down, once on the ground it was just a scramble to see who gets up first. Luckily that was my friend, who proceeded (with a hatchet in his chest) to stomp on the other guy's balls until he literally went unconscious from shock and pain. No lesson here other than go for the balls if you really have to.

The first thing he did was to kick him in the nuts as hard as he could--even lifted him off the ground. That guy was not slowed down even a tiny bit, and kicked my buddy's ass. Don't ever expect that hitting someone's balls is going to stop anyone. Some guys will fall down screaming, others will just destroy you.

Sagrotan Just about the only time i ever hear this argument is by usually young guys in general who have virtually no real life combat experience. when you are ambushed only one thing matters period, that is getting away from the situation preferably with you life, or buying time for others to escape. When you are ambushed you are always at a disadvantage for a whole host of reasons. As such the best course of action is almost always to run or give up whatever attacker wants with little to no resistance. As was stated only if someone's life is at stake would you want to fight back contrary to popular opinion this is not pacifist behavior nor is it encouraging to the criminal, well with exception if you do not report the crime.

Every time I make an infrequent visit to your channel, I kind of half expect to listen to something that is (with good intention) ill-informed. Every time I find myself being reminded that you are actually extremely intellectual and your ability to truthfully and critically analyse things is absolutely solid.
This is an absolutely excellent look at the reality of knife-attacker situations. It is such a painfully obvious fact that pretty much all self-defence techniques involving knife or gun defence are concocted in complete fantasy scenarios that do not even come close to resembling reality. I am so glad to see another video preaching the realistic truth about these situations. Hopefully, one-by-one, people will stop living in a holywood fantasy.
The best form of defence against a knife-attacker is absolute situational awareness. Not being places you're likely to get attacked at times you're likely to get attacked. Not walking around with your expensive iPhone out. Not having your bag in plain view. Not getting your wallet out at night. Being aware of where you are, if you are being followed, who is around you, what type of neighbourhood you're in... then if somebody is approaching you, very quickly getting a grasp of their intention. Make it clear you're feeling unsafe from a distance, then backing up quickly or moving away while being conscious of what is around you. If you need to run, knowing where you can run. Where there might be law enforcement. Where there are large crowds. If someone is walking your way and you want to check their intentions, cross the fucking street... twice if you have to. If they cross intentionally to intercept you, you will know about it before they get too close.
This applies when you are with somebody. If you are in a situation where someone has a knife to a loved one's throat, they are at liberty to make any demand they wish, including your life. Unless you're literally packing superhuman speed, this is not a situation you need to even train for. There is nothing any amount of martial arts is going to do to change that... but clearly communicating to your loved-one that you're in a dangerous situation and that you both need to quickly move somewhere safe... that is self-defence.
These are all skills that you can train just like you can go to a dojo and spend time training martial arts. These are skills that professional doormen and bodyguards will have under their belt. They are trained in situational assessment and also how to engage in vocal ''combat'' so-to-speak; how to disarm a situation with words. How to prevent escalation. How to clearly communicate to a potential attacker that you are aware of them and how to quickly identify the intentions of anyone approaching you in the street. If you want to spend time training skills... train these skills, and train how to run.

I have a top ten coming, then I think I'll get the knife video after that or after the following video. Well you did take a lot of time to write that comment and I really like your wording so let's see if we can do something to prevent people from getting stabbed because they believe BS and see if we can make them see how the real world is. At least that's what I'm trying to do. I got a retractable spring knife I can use and we are going to film some stuff with my friends to show how difficult it is even for trained people to grap the opponent's hand with the knife and so on. The idea is to basically SHOW what's been told on this video and on your comment.

Absolutely correct. I am an ex police officer 23 years and an ex correctional officer 3 years. These teachers are putting people in danger teaching unrealistic scenarios and defenses that are flawed . The first rule is not to fight a knife with an empty hand.
If someone wanted to stab me on the job and did not make a demonstration with the knife first (and why would they?) I would have been stabbed. That is why we had 2 cops and one would stand to the side. It would be a suicide attack because my partner would get him. Not me, I would be bleeding and maybe dying. The attacker seldom wanted to suicide so they did not attack.
The first rule in unarmed combat is not to do it. Get away if you can. However if you cant get away get a weapon fast. A kitchen type or outdoor chair is very very good. It is a shield (seat) with a handle (back rest) and 4 legs to stab with. A coffee table is good. Either go hard forward and don't stop until he is down out and disarmed or hit him hard stun him and back away, I mean far away.
Don't let round 2 happen. If you get an advantage then ruthlessly make sure he is not getting up to re attack you. As long as he remains a threat you are defending yourself. Once he ceases to be a threat to you and others you must stop. That is the law. But how do you, a scared civilian full of adrenaline and with no training make that call? The law will say it is what is in your head. If you think he is still a danger then that is OK, unless it is obviously ridiculous. A cop is held to a higher standard due to training and experience.
However he is the aggressor and you are just a scared person so you have reasonable latitude to ensure your safety by making sure he stays down. You can not know if he is able to get up as soon as you stop attacking. You are not a doctor (probably). If you believe he is out to it and no longer a threat and you keep hurting him you are in legal trouble. But if you are a scared person making sure he cant get up to hurt you (within reason) you are okay. The cops will ask you why you hit him while he was down. As long as you believed you stopped when he was no longer a threat you are ok. Remember this is only if he is an aggressor threatening you or another's life or serious injury. If you started it then this does not apply.
Remember you also do not know how fast he can run. Running is not always an option. If he can outrun you then showing your back in an attempt to run from an aggressive attacker is possibly the most dangerous thing you can do. Also you have to turn first and that takes time. If the police ask you why you did not run that is a good answer. You might run and scream to gain a few seconds or to get to help if its close or if you are simply too weak to fight anyone. But it is often a bad option.
Make really purposeful decisions and act on them. Easier to do than to say I know, and I had a lot of experience and was no good on my first day. But get a weapon in your hands fast. I have always looked at Hollywood depictions of knife attacks and the martial arts style defenses against attacks seem suspiciously tailored to Hollywood style attackers. Is there a reason for this? I wonder about that. It certainly has no attachment to reality.

    • @broncosgjn
      @broncosgjn 7 лет назад +39

Hi Max. This is the self defense excuse to assault. The test in most places is as follows (not in legal terms). These are the things that a court will look at.
Did you provoke the attack? You can not provoke an attack then beat someone up and claim self defense. Remember the school bully who used to operate this way tormenting smaller kids until they snapped and then pulverizing them? He would get away with it by saying "He hit me first." The school was incompetent but the law won't allow it. It is amazing that people like this were doing crimes all through school that would get them jailed after leaving school. and the school was just "Oh well that is just Brian. You kids keep away from him."
Did you feel that you were under immediate threat of attack? So you need to be sure in your own mind you are about to be attacked. Remember you must be sure you are about to be attacked. If there are witnesses then they can say what they saw but they can not say what you were thinking. They also can not say what the other guy was thinking. So it is what is in YOUR mind that counts. You might have made an honest mistake but that is another thing to an outright assault. At the time of the action IN YOUR MIND you were convinced you were about to be attacked.
Is the threat of such a serious nature that you needed to act physically against the person? Was he a frail man of 91 years? This okay if you also are the same. Is he in a wheelchair and you are fit? But then in any case you think he is going for a weapon. So that is different.
So you believe he was going for a weapon to use against you. His other actions and words together must give you enough reason to believe this. If you do then this is very serious. If you truly believed based on the guys words and actions that he was going to attack you with a weapon then you are excused under law for defending yourself. Maybe he was going for a phone or a cigarette but if you don't know this and the circumstances convinced you otherwise then that is your state of mind.
The big issue here is would another ordinary person feel threatened by the guys actions.
Then we have the follow on.
Did you stop attacking when he was no longer a threat ? So did you act with enough force to take him out but stop when he was down and out or did you proceed to give him a good kicking for luck after he was helpless?
You notice this is an ORDINARY person scenario.
To unpack the other ordinary person who would also be afraid of attack here is a bit of information.
Would another ORDINARY person be afraid of attack in a similar circumstance? This means another ordinary person should also be afraid of an attack in the same circumstances. Ordinary people are sane and ordinary dumb schmucks with no special skills. Ordinary person is a legal definition. Might be different in US parlance but there will be a similar person described in law.
there are ordinary people and reasonable people in the law. An ordinary person is just the lowest common person. Not intellectually disabled but not smart or well educated or very brave or good at anything. So if the law says ordinary person then that is the standard.
A REASONABLE person is a person who is reasonable according to the scenario. If the law talks about a reasonable person it means another person like you. Having similar education and experience. So you can hold a doctor accountable by the standards of another doctor in a medical misconduct case. However the same doctor in the assault on the street is held to the standard of just an ordinary schmuck because this is not his area of expertise.
There is one thing that is different in different countries and that is: could you have run away? In some places they think you should run away if you can. In some places they say you do not have to run away. But you can explain that by saying "I am a slow runner." or "Maybe he is a fast runner and can catch me and then my back is to him." But I don't know enough about other peoples legal systems.

First thing they told us was that you can be stabbed 30 times within 10 foot of a person who weilds a knife. And you got that shank part 100% correct as well I've witnessed a shank being used when I was arrested as a younger adult. It was brutal, it was bloody and it was over before it started. They used a toothbrush with the head twisted off and sharpened by dragging the end along the rough mortar of the brick walls. You gotta care about you and you first. No magical technique is going to save you. And keep in mind this isn't the Edo period where masters isolated from the world spent thousands of years training solely in war techniques. Your a common snuck who paid someone to teach you stuff and how well you learn and apply and access the information is going to effect the outcome of your defense. Props and respect sir. Tony Guastaferri when I was a kid, during a "self-defense night," my Sensei lined everyone up and asked us all to tell him what we would do if confronted with a knife or gun armed robber. We all obviously picked a technique we learned and he just smiled and nodded and we all seemed to answer correctly, but then he said: "let me show you what I would do..." and he had someone come up to aim a wooden gun at him, point blank, and he put his hands up (like some of the techniques required) then he reached one hand into his back pocket and he handed the "robber" his wallet. He then turned to face his confused students and said, "these techniques are meant for the most dire of scenarios where the attacker wants to kill you and others and there is nowhere to run. There is no need to be a foolish hero. Statistically, you have a 2/3 chance of surviving from a point blank gun pointed at you if you attempt to disarm them, if all they want is your money, give it to them, the likely don't even want to shoot you and will run away after getting what they wanted. The most valuable thing you posess is your own life, don't throw it away just so you can play a hero in a situation you can walk away from peacefully." It was the wisest advice I ever learned from him. That day I learned that martial arts aren't for "beating up bad guys" or "being cool" it was about protecting yourself and others, even if that means giving a guy with a knife/gun your wallet so he can go away.

Armor also makes a real difference. My cousin was in the air force and got into a knife fight with an insurgent once, the terrorist was an idiot though and I guess he didn't know he was wearing a ballistic insert on his chest. So the knife got stuck in the fabric and ceramic.

I frankly agree on most of the points, but i have to adress 2 of them:
      1. In life or death situation, don`t think what is legal or illegal. Don`t even put this shit in your mind, it can pop up in the middle of the brawl, and instead of reacting, you`ll just focus on "not doing them any harm". Don`t think about anything, just do what your body is programed to do. If 3 guys start walking toward me, and everyone of them looks like they have invisible watermelon under each arm, or i`ll se blade in corner of my eye, i`m not gonna ask them "hey, we are going to just fuck each other up, or is it life or death?". Nobody should have to. And what they suppose to say? How would that work out? What kind of defense would they put in court? "Your highness, we only wanted to knock his front teeth out, because we didn`t like his stupid mug" "Compeling case, with lot of hard evidence. Defender is goin to jail, while these three poor men can walk free now"... Beside situation where one of them has wealthy daddy or said daddy is a lawyer(fuckers) nobody will belive that normal person with no previous assault charges just jumped at 3 guys out of nowhere.
Just beat them up, and run away. Spit in the face, kick to the nuts, and off we go. You survived, then onto next problem- what will happen now? Will i have problem with police? Should i even call them? He attack me, i did nothing wrong, let HIM worry. Why the fuck is this my problem that this cunt jumped at me, and it is me who have to be careful???
I once walked down the road, having bad day, guy driving past me splashed me with water from a puddle, so i let rip a cluster of curses adressing him. So he stopped, got out of the car, and attacked me. Just like that, maybe he had bad day also. Well it was about to get worse. And how much time i had to assess the situation, you think? I just reacted. He grabbed my coat, so i kneed him in the stomach, pushed him onto the fence and smacked him few times. Nothing fancy, nothing dwadly- just a few straight ones in the nose. Three or four, i don`t remember. Just let him go and walked away. How that was my fault? I didn`t dirve too fast, disregarding pedestrians, i didn`t attack. I just finished the thing. Don`t worry about legal/illegal, just make sure, that the other guy won`t knock your teeth out. And that applies to all assaults. Even weaponless. One guy will smack you, other will kick you, third, to top them off, will drop a concrete piece on your head, because he is high on adrenaline and to proove to them he is tough, will do something really nasty. So do a calculation, what is better? Be mutilated for the rest of your life, because some drunk fuck wanted to play, or teach him a life lesson and walk home faster, before police arrives?
      2. I don`t think mail is such a good idea. It so happens, i got once "stabbed" in the gut with a beer bottle. It wasn`t even broken, y`know "rose", guy just grabbed it and clubbed me in the stomach with the neck of the bottle, when i hit him in the face, we fought over the fact, he slapped his girlfriend or some stupid shit like that, i was drunk. And let me tell you, sheer force of that almost broke my ribs, and breathing really hurt. Got out victorious, but while i had a giant yellow bruise on my ribs for a two weeks, he probably got a black eye for only a few days. And that was through rather thick winter jacket. Knife don`t have to penetrate body to do it`s thing. Do experiment and hit your forearm with open hand, then do it with the same strenght, but use your knuckles. Hurts, no? Now imagine the same strenght compressed to a one millimeter point. Many people use dull blades all the time, because they don`t know how to maintain the blade, or knife is just cheap and get dull really quickly. Doesn`t matter- if one would get hit with it, he/she will keel over with broken ribs or trauma to internal organs, and chainmail won`t stop the force. But if you want to have something, that won`t let knife point to run through you? Proper leather jacket- thick pig skin, the long kind, covering hips, not this shirt-like, thin shit that is in fashion now, and proper military trousers- this real kind, dense material, heavy, that can keep one relatively cool in the summer and warm in the winter. Beside thin bladed dagger, or a screw driver filed down to a nasty ice pick(or full lenght sword of course), proper leather jacket and military trousers can stop knife, and have one advantage over proposed mail shirt- it has sleeves and legs. At the very least i can defend myself like with vambraces. It`ll hurt like hell, but i won`t bleed and can kick the guy without worrying about cuts

Do not engage a threat when you are at a disadvantage and if you're unarmed, disengage. There are times when you can engage them, but on a battlefield in full kit which means you have a large portion of your vitals protected is not the same as being on the streets. It's very easy for someone to nick an artery or tendon with the first stab and end the fight right there.

"Police officers need 10 feet to react..." As a retired law enforcement officer, I can tell you this is VERY OPTIMISTIC for this type of shooting drill. Dennis Tueller who invented the "Tueller Drill" (sometimes referred to as the 21-foot rule) proved that an officer needs at least 21 feet of space to draw and fire a round BEFORE the assailant reaches them (or about 2 seconds of time from start of the draw to the target's reaction to being shot). That is for ONE shot. It often takes multiple shots to put down an assailant.
Your flashlight defense is a well thought out, commonly used "less lethal" defense in the US. I love the SureFire 6P flashlight for its power and durability. A good "bezel smash" (striking with the lamp end of the flashlight) to the bridge of the nose is a real fight stopper. I have used it on a number of occasions.

I'm really late to the party, but it's 2021, and this is still good information. I agree with all the points you made. If you ever find yourself in a knife fight, you already lost.
About armor: In the U.S.A., it's normal to see police wearing ballistic armor as a matter of course. Even here in Oregon, which is generally pretty rural. Ballistic armor can be difficult/impossible to acquire for some people depending on where they live, but here, I consider it a worthwhile investment. There are a number of companies making vests that are flexible and lightweight enough to be worn regularly, and will protect against most handgun rounds. They are generally not very discreet, though.
If I lived somewhere that stabbings were more prevalent than shootings, I might go the mail shirt route as well. It might be a little heavier than some modern ballistic armor (depending on a number of factors), but it will usually be thinner, more concealable, more breathable, and provide better coverage as well.
Some ballistic armor will protect against stabs to some degree, and some will not. If you are concerned about both, check to make sure it's rated against both.
And, of course, no armor can protect what it doesn't cover. If someone has a gun aimed at your head, "Omae wa mou shindeiru!"

The comic is Punisher (I don't know the date or the number, I read it over 20 years ago), and Frank Castle (aka, The Punisher) is about to be involved in a knife fight (one that he actually can't run from). His inner monologue talks about him getting prepared (he even has a flashlight that he uses in the fight), but one thing he says right before he engages is this: "In a knife fight you're going to get cut. Expect it. Accept it." I thought those were wise words, because knowing that you will be injured and experience pain could prevent you from shutting down when it happens. (I never thought that comic would come up again, and it's curious that he used a flashlight too.)

My instructor in 1988 was a retired marine. He always said, “when confronted by an opponent armed with a knife...run.” If you absolutely can’t run then be resolved that you will bleed and drop your opponent with all haste while minimizing where you will get cut. Thank you for this video.

i love that everyone brings Military personnel into the discussion like they are some authority on martial arts. they aren't even though the modern Marine corp has the Mcmap(marine corp martial arts program) its actually pretty useless. they only train for a few hours and even the highly trained special ops teams like, green berets, army rangers, navy seals, force recon marines etc have at most 60 hours of martial arts training. thats not even enough to actually be good enough to defend yourself with

I stabbed a guy so I guess I'll tell you all a story
I had this gf and her family was nuts, constantly harrassing both of us, calling the cops with false allegations, ect. And he was dead set on fighting me. Well he called one day saying he was going to come fight me, I wasn't scared he did this many times. So I walked across an alley behind my home and across the road to a gas station. He pulled up in a car with 4 other people. I ran up to him hands up, he started yelling to people behind me, I was like wtf, I turn and see a blind side of 3 people behind me. I had a small pocket knife in my pocket so I pulled it out as I was trying to run past the three guys. As I was running one of the guys grabbed me and boom I turned slashed and wow. He was hurt I cut the whole bottom side of his arm from just below the elbow to his wrist. I got charged with a felony agg. Batt. With deadly weapon but after 2 years I beat the case and the other guy only got 100$ settlement. Here's a lesson folks don't come looking for shit and be surprised when you find it

I didn’t beat my case and have an assault on my record it’s absolutely fucked me I wish I had fought it but the stress got to me and I took a plea deal to make it end. Good on you for fighting two damn years.

@John Ghost This comment section is full of fantasizers who are essentially fabricating stories to agree with Metatron in a really gauche, roundabout manner. If you're curious about what I mean, there's some phenomenon where people (usually with a few anti-social traits) fantasize specifically about self-defense situations and have daydreams about it. It's like a recurring shower thought for them. I can't think of the term but it's part of forensic psychology. Look up the Michael Dunn case, or hell, tons of cases similar to his. Arghh I'm too lazy to find the info on the journal publishing. There is a small but noteworthy group of people with CCWs who have this hero complex effect going on, making them much more likely to overreact in tense situations.

I got a huge knife scar on my forearm, as a guy tried to hijack my car with me inside, my left arm was lying on the door, and as my gear was at first, I manage to go from inert to 80 in a few secs, but the guy was really fast and still bleed me a lot. That was an extremely irresponsible response, cause I haven't seen any weapon at all. I got lucky it was a blade, but what if it was a gun? The blade could have many resistant diseases as well. Probability would be high that this comment would never exist.
In resume, under totally unexpected violent situation, we never think straight. There's no manual for life as is said. I don't know about your friend, but maybe he could not see another way of winning the situation, maybe he was cornered.
I believe in Odin and Norse stuff, so as far as I know, he became an Emherjer (died in combat) and his soul was carried warmly by a hot valkjr, and is feasting with other brave men and women at the halls of Valhall, among heroes and gods. A nice virtue. Still, down here in Midgard (our healm) a tragic story. My regards.

My distant cousin had a better ending, with just one guy attacking him with a knife. Cuz wasn't formally 'trained' but he went by good instinct... he was probably trying to grab the arm but instead grabbed the blade (still has the big scar in his palm). He took the knife away and killed the guy. To learn what really happens, watch prison surveillance videos where guys get stabbed. In real life, walking in the streets, or even ordering at a take-out 1/ don't expect to be warned 'OK, we're going to attack you now 2/ or guy may distract you with his talk, or offer a helping hand, and then suddenly he's stabbing you, and you didn't even see it 3/ or he has buddies .. in other words, don't expect a 'fair fight' ... anytime a stranger(s) are being aggressive, be aware that you are in deadly situation. It's BS when the legal beagles worry about "Oh, just use enough force , but not too much force." Legally or morally, my take is that a stranger who's aggressive move is placing you in danger, so either run or use lethal force. Trust your gut when a stranger approaches.

Great video man. Someone linked me the vid in a thread on another website full of videos about knife self defense. As much as everyone thinks they can do it, you can’t just disarm your opponent or hit them with a quick combo and win a fight. People use knives in these assaults because of how quick, simple, and effective they are. You will likely not win, nevertheless without taking a few blows yourself.

Most sensible discussion on this topic I've heard. I've practiced Judo and even my reaction time is not enough to catch a person who is intending to stab me with hidden blade, which is easy to stab repeatedly with. 10 feet? even 20 feet is not advisable, best just throw the money and run away.

Same experience. Despite doing several years of 'practical' stuff like Thai Boxing, it always manages to surprise me how slow I react when someone suddenly physically grabs my shoulder on the street. Same thing as when driving, your reaction time will be 1-2 seconds when something surprising happens - and if someone is planning to attack you, they will try to get the first sucker punch or stab in before you know what's going on. I agree on Avoid & Run tactic.

its not really that realistic, as many commentators said, the 'attacker' has the possibility of out running you.
so, what you want is to run to a nearby weapon, preferably something with long reach. And then after you armed yourself, continue to retreat/run while keeping "an eye" on the attacker.
But still, the advice was good. Attempt to retreat unless you got someone or something to protect, then you try to fight.

Run... of course if u can or ur belt, as long as ur pants wont fall down, or ur shirt. ur goal is to trap the knife. alot easier with the shirt. the belt however can b used as a weapon also. unfortunately using these tools u have to fully commit and doing so brings u deadly close to the business end of that blade.

Good one, Man. I'm from Rio, a place with dangerous streets. This is what i can add: Yes, run for your life, but not just run...Go to a poste or a tree, and dribble and dodge using that as a barrier as you scream "fire, help, fire". Some attackers are real fast, you won't go very far if you're not a match. As for the "not recognize the threat, it's very true. Usually, if they show you the knife, they just want your money. Just give it away and go home. But if people sign you like "come here", or if they lock eyes on you, in silent, still posture, or if they come like they're going to hug you, showing no signs of being armed, look for that tree and run.

  • @Chocobow9

I've trained in Taekwondo for 8 years (and with other systems like Muay Thai and BJJ for an extra amount of time), and there's one thing you didn't cover when saying 'don't believe those self defense systems'. The very first thing any good instructor will teach you is that knife defense isn't for defeating an enemy with a knife, it's for finding an opening to flee. Yes, you can put someone with a knife into an arm bar or disarm them in general if you have a guaranteed chance, but the most important thing is to make sure that you actually have the opening to flee. Someone who wants to kill you won't just let you turn your back and run for free, given that you're going into detail about how it's not a duel, but a life or death situation.
Just because you are more likely to get stabbed than guard against an attacker with a knife, is not a reason to neglect learning how to deal with one. Something most people don't know when faced with a knife is to turn their wrists inwards, like a boxing stance, to minimize the amount of potentially-lethal areas the knife user can cut. Likewise, most people can't tell the difference between someone using the knife to scare you, and someone using the knife with the intention of harming you. A person who wants to harm you won't let you see the knife in the first place, they'll keep it hidden until they can actually use it. A person who places the knife between the two of you is trying to make you scared without actually wanting to harm you. The concept of defending against a knife is under the assumption that you know someone has it, and if you know they have it, they likely aren't trained with it or actually looking to kill.
Just because you should run away from a knife, it doesn't mean you should neglect learning to deal with them. Learning to defend myself against a knife has potentially saved my life on numerous occasions. I've ended up with wounds on the back of my wrists instead of bleeding out from a deadlier area. It has taught me how to create an opening to flee. Heck, and luckily I haven't had to deal with this situation yet, it's taught me to learn to fight against someone with a knife when I *can't afford to run*, such as when someone else you care about is at risk, or you have nowhere to run away in the first place.
You don't train in martial arts in order to actually use it against someone - you train in martial arts and hope you'll never need to use it. The sole exception being if it's part of your job.

    • @Chocobow9
      @Chocobow9 7 лет назад +9

If you're having a knife pulled on you in a forest, a desert, or an open field, you've already fucked up - that entire hypothetical, incredibly specific situation isn't a valid reason why learning to defense yourself isn't a logical decision. The point is to get away - if they means breaking a stomping someone's knee,, hitting them in the kidney, sternum, liver, etc, putting them on the floor, whatever. Even taking a few cuts to the back of the wrists if it means you can daze the person with a punch for just long enough to get running, then you do it. When dealing with knives, you will likely get cut regardless of how good you are, even if the person with the knife only knows how to flail. Martial arts minimizes the risk of getting stabbed, getting lethally wounded, as well as your chance to get away.
If you do what needs to be done to run away, it's unlikely the person with the knife will be able to catch you, even if there was a completely illogical 'what if' situation where there was nowhere to hide, and no crowds of people to run to. Heck, sometimes you might not even need to run away. If you catch someone at the correct time with a knife you could very well put them down. There are numerous videos of people without training surviving knife attacks, so putting training on top of that would
The best defense is to never get attacked in the first place - if that fails, the second best defense is being able to minimize the damage you take. Martial arts trains you for that. Martial arts should be one of the skills you never want to use, unless it's your profession, too. Giving an example like what you did is the equivalent of saying 'what if the attacker has a changer of heart at the last second'? Both situations are very unlikely, but, yes, they can happen.

Wrong, there are knife defense techniques that work, maybe not on the first attack, which is usually a surprise, but on subsequent attacks, once you're aware of the danger, you can defend if you take the proper training. That's also why I watch people who are closer to me than they should be Very, very carefully.

I absolutely love your reasoning/logic here.
    SPOT ON
I am an expert in NOTHING. However, I've been around, as I am a retired Combat Medic ( Baghdad, class of 2004), and have worked in surgery at Level 2 Trauma Centers. I have treated many injuries for a lot of different reasons, to include knife fights.
One victim I helped take care of had been stabbed 56 times, and had her throat cut from ear to ear. She survived, the attacker got away.
I don't tell the above story for any other reason, than, hopefully, emphasize your point concerning the outcome of such a confrontation.
Distance, as you show, IS your best friend, you have to manage it, and to do that, you can't have your head down, or so focused on the music your listening to, that you don't see the approaching threat.
Lastly, in support of your demonstrating how an attacker will hide a weapon until the last moment, Doug Marcaida, a Philippino Martial Arts practitioner said in a video: "A weapon should be felt, not seen"
He was, referring to the weapon you may have for defending yourself (as in, don't let the attacker see it until nescessary).
    Thanks again for the video/information.
    Justin

It all most all cases it’s not pretty.
It’s amazing how much martial mis-information is out there regarding defense against, and facts about, edged weapon attacks.
You hit all the important points that many well-meaning “experts” either do not emphasize or don’t talk about at all.
One of the best learning tips is to be aware of what’s going on around you (routinely). And just as important do your best to avoid getting into a situations that may result in you potentially becoming the victim of an edged weapon attack, i.e. excess alcohol + an unbridled mouth, driving + undisciplined temper, etc. etc….
