I'm in the french military, I teach reserve soldiers to react to knife attacks, I can only back up what you say. Very wise. One thing to remember though, don't think of consequences when the situation is dire and urgent. To act is of utmost importance. "Better be trialed by 12 than carried by 6"
Exactly...stay out of the predator's area. Same reason we don't swim with sharks or walk in the fields with lions. Stay out of bad places. Bars, bad neighborhoods. Go to work then go home :)
A knife attack/stabbing is NOT a "knife fight." A knife fight is 2 IDIOTS willingly or semi-willingly fighting each other with knives. The reason it happens is often because of pride, or petty insults.
1. Wait for the assailant to attack. 2. Parry the attack and close in. 3. Grapple and restrain the assailant. 4. Disarm the assailant’s weapon. 5. The threat has been neutralised. 6. Now snap out of it and realise you died somewhere around step 2.
It's always about defending when the knife is out. No one ever talks to attack first before it's drawn. The guy with the knife isn't invincible with bullet time reactions.
The military made a good video on knife fights. Soldier one says "right I'm going to show you how to deal with an attacker holding a knife." Camera turns to show soldier two, knife drawn and moving forward. Camera turns back. Soldier one is running for the hills.
Was raised by a military sec. op. Instructor. Yes you can disarm a person, blade or gun. That being said, it is extremely difficult and doesn't look like what you see on tv or in martial arts tournaments. Your options: 1) RUN 2) carry a weapon (legally) 3) fight fair (you will die) 4) fight dirty (you may live)
Does fighting dirty mean along with avoiding the weapon trying to batter certain weak places like the testes, throat, liver, chest, eyes, or general head?
@@Kakaragi it also means if there is ANYTHING within reach that can be useful, take it and fight to kill. If you are only fighting to not die, your chances are lower. Even a oversized rock is good for bashing, or if it has sharp edges for cutting. But all of this is second to run. Ironically, carrying a weapon isn't useful in many cases because if you're blindsided, chances are you're going to be dead before you can: a) remember you have the weapon b) reach for the weapon c) fight back If the first strike by the assailant is in the right place, you have... 10 seconds until you're dead.
Hagane no Saiyajin yep, eyes gouging, groin kicks, ear slaps, knee kicks, hitting the nose with the palm of the hand, and throat punches, anything that’ll give you an advantage. Also using anything around you to your advantage, you can use your keys as a gouging weapon, a rock as a battering weapon, a thick stick as a weapon, anything around you.
I never know what to expect from this channel. Metatron covers: *History *Martial Arts *Music *Language *Cooking/recipes *Comedy *a large assortment of interesting trivia. Keep doing what you do. You are a true Renaissance man!
Imagine trying to stab a dude in a club and it not doing anything, he rips off his shirt off and underneath it he's wearing fucking chainmail. The moment of 'wait what the FUCK' is all you need to disarm him.
Haven't you learned anything from what the guy tries to bring across? You run away, No Bruce Lee, super warrior secret disarming technique, just hit the fucking road! But it's your life, do whatever you like, but his advice is your best chance, ignore it at your own risk, young man. PROTIP: he wears a sleeveless mailleshirt, his arms, his throat, his groin, his legs (femoral artery!!!) are unprotected! The guy still got his knife, it's edge is still perfect... Do you see the problem?
The guys above were joking, not saying that it's a bad idea to wear body protection. Also, the attacker leaves themselves open in two ways: 1) Their weapon may get damaged. 2) Even if the weapon is still in perfect condition, their perception of reality will be warped for a second or two. They'll be confused that the guy they're stabbing just isn't going down. That gives the defender additional time to land in a hit, run away or steal their weapon. Trust me when I say this from someone who *has* been ambushed and survived: a single second of advantage is a blessing like none other in such a situation.
+zürihegel I get the sentiment but don't bring Bruce Lee in to this. If you've read much of his actual ideals around fighting he only say to harm if backed in a corner. If you're out or at the bar, your main goal is to get home. If you HAVE to defend your self, keep it simple and get away.
A friend of mine was once attacked with a hatchet, some kind of argument escalated to violence. The attacker struck him in his chest, just below his left collar bone, he has a big scar to this day. What saved him was grabbing the attacker's wrist and pulling it *forward*, which sounds really counter intuitive. He told me he doesn't know why he did that, it wasn't a planned move at all, but the hatchet was already inside of his chest and I guess it felt natural. He pulled the guy's arm forward as he fell backwards and they both went down, once on the ground it was just a scramble to see who gets up first. Luckily that was my friend, who proceeded (with a hatchet in his chest) to stomp on the other guy's balls until he literally went unconscious from shock and pain. No lesson here other than go for the balls if you really have to.
"Always go for the balls, idc about anything at all rather than save my Life. If i have a chance a kick in the balls is the first move. When on the ground continue to stomp his Dick and a little his face too because why not. Than procede to pee and spit on the defeated enemy. Finish him off and his sons too or else vengence will come in your way" some drunk dude in a bar, 2017 circa.
Someone (a BIG guy) I used to know forty years ago, had been taking martial arts for while. He went to a football game, and ran into someone who started a fight. The first thing he did was to kick him in the nuts as hard as he could--even lifted him off the ground. That guy was not slowed down even a tiny bit, and kicked my buddy's ass. Don't ever expect that hitting someone's balls is going to stop anyone. Some guys will fall down screaming, others will just destroy you.
This is what Hollywood doesn’t get. They seem to think sparring for 5 minutes adds to the drama. But showing the speed and brutality of a realistic knife attack would be much more shocking and sobering to viewers that believe in the “myth”.
It would be way to shocking for people. Extreme realism is not something you want for a movie, which the point of it is to entertain. Real life videos of people getting killed or doing a mortal combat is terrifying, even more if you have seen those things in person.
“Never argue with stupid people, they will drag you down to their level and then beat you with experience.” ― Mark Twain. "Only two things are infinite, the universe and human stupidity, and I'm not sure about the former" ― Albert Einstein. "To exist is to change, to change is to mature, to mature is to go on creating oneself endlessly" ―Henri Bergson.
I was 2 times in a knife attack situation. Both times the attack was a surprise - no chance to react on time. Both time my clothes and dumb luck saved me. The first time was when I was returning from a friend of mine, that cleans my knifes collection. I have an under the armpit belt for a knife. And the attacker tried to stab me there - his blade hit hard, but did not stab me. The second one was a front attack, again, did not see it coming, still have a scar on my arm from it - but the blade was too short and dull, could not penetrate the heavy leather jacket that I have that day. First one did run, a lot of people that day on the street, so when I scream - he runs. The second one did not have so much luck. His knife was stuck in my jacket, and a little in my arm, so my friend that was with me jumped in and tackle him to the ground. Both of those situations prove what Metatron says - there is almost no chance of defending against something like that. And I was lucky like hell both of the times.
Let's just say that I'm a lot more believing that I was before that. Maybe its dumb luck, maybe devils charm, God mercy or all of them together - still, I'm very, very thankful for whatever it was.
There was this one time where someone came at me with a knife. Whether he planned to attack or not is a thing I keep thinking about. But what happened was that I swung my leg at him and the knife hit my leg and he dropped it. Got a slight injury from that, but that was about it.
Funny I'm 40 years old and your the first person who is honest about shit. I was trained to carry a Gun. First thing they told us was that you can be stabbed 30 times within 10 foot of a person who weilds a knife. And you got that shank part 100% correct as well I've witnessed a shank being used when I was arrested as a younger adult. It was brutal, it was bloody and it was over before it started. They used a toothbrush with the head twisted off and sharpened by dragging the end along the rough mortar of the brick walls. You gotta care about you and you first. No magical technique is going to save you. And keep in mind this isn't the Edo period where masters isolated from the world spent thousands of years training solely in war techniques. Your a common snuck who paid someone to teach you stuff and how well you learn and apply and access the information is going to effect the outcome of your defense. Props and respect sir. Keep doing these videos we need more common sense less ego.. love from the states..
You need not to get the pistol out. Firing through the clothes is perfectly good. One doesn't need to aim because one gets the stomach and/or groin and genital area of the assailant. Ten feet means 3 or 4 rounds out.
Yes, I took some Krav Maga classes in the USA and was told that if possible I should run from a knife attack. That is my natural instinct too: not only knives and guns; but also, X-girl friends.
For a knife running is a good option but depending on where you are running from a gun might be bad. If theres valid cover or concealment yes but running from a gun in an open area is obviously bad
"A knife is meant to be felt, not seen." What you said in this video Metatron is 100% correct. I've seen numerous knife attacks, sometimes it just takes 1 "good" spot to strike the victim bleeds out all over the place they stood then drop dead from the rapid loss of blood. It is gruesome and often hard to watch. Knifes can be just as deadly as a firearm. - 5 years late
Every time I make an infrequent visit to your channel, I kind of half expect to listen to something that is (with good intention) ill-informed. Every time I find myself being reminded that you are actually extremely intellectual and your ability to truthfully and critically analyse things is absolutely solid. This is an absolutely excellent look at the reality of knife-attacker situations. It is such a painfully obvious fact that pretty much all self-defence techniques involving knife or gun defence are concocted in complete fantasy scenarios that do not even come close to resembling reality. I am so glad to see another video preaching the realistic truth about these situations. Hopefully, one-by-one, people will stop living in a holywood fantasy. The best form of defence against a knife-attacker is absolute situational awareness. Not being places you're likely to get attacked at times you're likely to get attacked. Not walking around with your expensive iPhone out. Not having your bag in plain view. Not getting your wallet out at night. Being aware of where you are, if you are being followed, who is around you, what type of neighbourhood you're in... then if somebody is approaching you, very quickly getting a grasp of their intention. Make it clear you're feeling unsafe from a distance, then backing up quickly or moving away while being conscious of what is around you. If you need to run, knowing where you can run. Where there might be law enforcement. Where there are large crowds. If someone is walking your way and you want to check their intentions, cross the fucking street... twice if you have to. If they cross intentionally to intercept you, you will know about it before they get too close. This applies when you are with somebody. If you are in a situation where someone has a knife to a loved one's throat, they are at liberty to make any demand they wish, including your life. Unless you're literally packing superhuman speed, this is not a situation you need to even train for. There is nothing any amount of martial arts is going to do to change that... but clearly communicating to your loved-one that you're in a dangerous situation and that you both need to quickly move somewhere safe... that is self-defence. These are all skills that you can train just like you can go to a dojo and spend time training martial arts. These are skills that professional doormen and bodyguards will have under their belt. They are trained in situational assessment and also how to engage in vocal ''combat'' so-to-speak; how to disarm a situation with words. How to prevent escalation. How to clearly communicate to a potential attacker that you are aware of them and how to quickly identify the intentions of anyone approaching you in the street. If you want to spend time training skills... train these skills, and train how to run.
Thank you very much I'm glad to hear you think that about me and that you liked this video. I made this video a long time ago and now I wanted to talk more about this. Do you mind if I use a few sentences from this comment of yours in my next video about knife fights? Thanks
I have a top ten coming, then I think I'll get the knife video after that or after the following video. Well you did take a lot of time to write that comment and I really like your wording so let's see if we can do something to prevent people from getting stabbed because they believe BS and see if we can make them see how the real world is. At least that's what I'm trying to do. I got a retractable spring knife I can use and we are going to film some stuff with my friends to show how difficult it is even for trained people to grap the opponent's hand with the knife and so on. The idea is to basically SHOW what's been told on this video and on your comment.
This one of the best replies I've read in a wrong time. Funny, I went over all these points with my nieces and nephews years ago. This is important for any adult to practice, but it's best taught early.
I had a friend who got into an argument in a bar with a guy. As he was leaving, the guy walked up behind him and stabbed him five times in the side of the stomach and chest, all before he really had time to even react. That's how most knife "fights" go down in reality. Luckily he recovered and was fine.
I remember seeing this self-defense class where they had people spar with markers, and the goal was to mark up the other person as much as possible. By the end of the exercise, everyone was covered with ink. Then the instructor said, "That's why you don't try to fight someone who has a knife."
Someone breaks into another man's house and sees that nobody is around. Suddenly a man in a full suit of 14th century armor charges down the hall and blasts the thief with a historical 18th century musket before swinging a nine foot pollaxe and brutally beheading the thief
Ass Hole if he's in someone else's house and forcibly entered btw, it's legal in some states to kill outright It happens a lot and yeah, it shouldn't be outlawed to kill a home invader. I'd rather go to parole or be under investigation than die or let any of my family get hurt
Edgy Bastage I don't see it that way, words are often used to prevent ones death or arrest... I see no reason a forced home invader shouldn't die if caught.
Tony Guastaferri when I was a kid, during a "self-defense night," my Sensei lined everyone up and asked us all to tell him what we would do if confronted with a knife or gun armed robber. We all obviously picked a technique we learned and he just smiled and nodded and we all seemed to answer correctly, but then he said: "let me show you what I would do..." and he had someone come up to aim a wooden gun at him, point blank, and he put his hands up (like some of the techniques required) then he reached one hand into his back pocket and he handed the "robber" his wallet. He then turned to face his confused students and said, "these techniques are meant for the most dire of scenarios where the attacker wants to kill you and others and there is nowhere to run. There is no need to be a foolish hero. Statistically, you have a 2/3 chance of surviving from a point blank gun pointed at you if you attempt to disarm them, if all they want is your money, give it to them, the likely don't even want to shoot you and will run away after getting what they wanted. The most valuable thing you posess is your own life, don't throw it away just so you can play a hero in a situation you can walk away from peacefully." It was the wisest advice I ever learned from him. That day I learned that martial arts aren't for "beating up bad guys" or "being cool" it was about protecting yourself and others, even if that means giving a guy with a knife/gun your wallet so he can go away.
Absolutely correct. I am an ex police officer 23 years and an ex correctional officer 3 years. These teachers are putting people in danger teaching unrealistic scenarios and defenses that are flawed . The first rule is not to fight a knife with an empty hand. If someone wanted to stab me on the job and did not make a demonstration with the knife first (and why would they?) I would have been stabbed. That is why we had 2 cops and one would stand to the side. It would be a suicide attack because my partner would get him. Not me, I would be bleeding and maybe dying. The attacker seldom wanted to suicide so they did not attack. The first rule in unarmed combat is not to do it. Get away if you can. However if you cant get away get a weapon fast. A kitchen type or outdoor chair is very very good. It is a shield (seat) with a handle (back rest) and 4 legs to stab with. A coffee table is good. Either go hard forward and don't stop until he is down out and disarmed or hit him hard stun him and back away, I mean far away. Don't let round 2 happen. If you get an advantage then ruthlessly make sure he is not getting up to re attack you. As long as he remains a threat you are defending yourself. Once he ceases to be a threat to you and others you must stop. That is the law. But how do you, a scared civilian full of adrenaline and with no training make that call? The law will say it is what is in your head. If you think he is still a danger then that is OK, unless it is obviously ridiculous. A cop is held to a higher standard due to training and experience. However he is the aggressor and you are just a scared person so you have reasonable latitude to ensure your safety by making sure he stays down. You can not know if he is able to get up as soon as you stop attacking. You are not a doctor (probably). If you believe he is out to it and no longer a threat and you keep hurting him you are in legal trouble. But if you are a scared person making sure he cant get up to hurt you (within reason) you are okay. The cops will ask you why you hit him while he was down. As long as you believed you stopped when he was no longer a threat you are ok. Remember this is only if he is an aggressor threatening you or another's life or serious injury. If you started it then this does not apply. Remember you also do not know how fast he can run. Running is not always an option. If he can outrun you then showing your back in an attempt to run from an aggressive attacker is possibly the most dangerous thing you can do. Also you have to turn first and that takes time. If the police ask you why you did not run that is a good answer. You might run and scream to gain a few seconds or to get to help if its close or if you are simply too weak to fight anyone. But it is often a bad option. Make really purposeful decisions and act on them. Easier to do than to say I know, and I had a lot of experience and was no good on my first day. But get a weapon in your hands fast. I have always looked at Hollywood depictions of knife attacks and the martial arts style defenses against attacks seem suspiciously tailored to Hollywood style attackers. Is there a reason for this? I wonder about that. It certainly has no attachment to reality.
Hi Max. This is the self defense excuse to assault. The test in most places is as follows (not in legal terms). These are the things that a court will look at. Did you provoke the attack? You can not provoke an attack then beat someone up and claim self defense. Remember the school bully who used to operate this way tormenting smaller kids until they snapped and then pulverizing them? He would get away with it by saying "He hit me first." The school was incompetent but the law won't allow it. It is amazing that people like this were doing crimes all through school that would get them jailed after leaving school. and the school was just "Oh well that is just Brian. You kids keep away from him." Did you feel that you were under immediate threat of attack? So you need to be sure in your own mind you are about to be attacked. Remember you must be sure you are about to be attacked. If there are witnesses then they can say what they saw but they can not say what you were thinking. They also can not say what the other guy was thinking. So it is what is in YOUR mind that counts. You might have made an honest mistake but that is another thing to an outright assault. At the time of the action IN YOUR MIND you were convinced you were about to be attacked. Is the threat of such a serious nature that you needed to act physically against the person? Was he a frail man of 91 years? This okay if you also are the same. Is he in a wheelchair and you are fit? But then in any case you think he is going for a weapon. So that is different. So you believe he was going for a weapon to use against you. His other actions and words together must give you enough reason to believe this. If you do then this is very serious. If you truly believed based on the guys words and actions that he was going to attack you with a weapon then you are excused under law for defending yourself. Maybe he was going for a phone or a cigarette but if you don't know this and the circumstances convinced you otherwise then that is your state of mind. The big issue here is would another ordinary person feel threatened by the guys actions. Then we have the follow on. Did you stop attacking when he was no longer a threat ? So did you act with enough force to take him out but stop when he was down and out or did you proceed to give him a good kicking for luck after he was helpless? You notice this is an ORDINARY person scenario. To unpack the other ordinary person who would also be afraid of attack here is a bit of information. Would another ORDINARY person be afraid of attack in a similar circumstance? This means another ordinary person should also be afraid of an attack in the same circumstances. Ordinary people are sane and ordinary dumb schmucks with no special skills. Ordinary person is a legal definition. Might be different in US parlance but there will be a similar person described in law. there are ordinary people and reasonable people in the law. An ordinary person is just the lowest common person. Not intellectually disabled but not smart or well educated or very brave or good at anything. So if the law says ordinary person then that is the standard. A REASONABLE person is a person who is reasonable according to the scenario. If the law talks about a reasonable person it means another person like you. Having similar education and experience. So you can hold a doctor accountable by the standards of another doctor in a medical misconduct case. However the same doctor in the assault on the street is held to the standard of just an ordinary schmuck because this is not his area of expertise. There is one thing that is different in different countries and that is: could you have run away? In some places they think you should run away if you can. In some places they say you do not have to run away. But you can explain that by saying "I am a slow runner." or "Maybe he is a fast runner and can catch me and then my back is to him." But I don't know enough about other peoples legal systems.
hi max i think the video is correct but didn't cover also the scenario of were you were place at, he was explaining about an unknown attacker like you were suppose to be in vs the known attacker like someone trying to rob you. in your scenario was a known attacker that's why you were subdue and that is the point of all martial arts irregardless of principle
Odens Bärsärk put some cayenne pepper and other spices in a hollow egg and in case of an attack break it in your hand and throw the spices at your opponent then run away
yeah you tell him man .. our cops don't use laws they make them up.. .... shoot first as questions later .. oh man our cops are bad ass.. most dumb as rocks and that is cool.. .. A few are stellar but most are brutes
***** "Running away all the time". You missed the point. You run when you can. This is a decision that demands discernment. But, If you are knife fighting in the street just to prove your a badass, your acting foolish. Plus, 9 times out of 10, you will not be able to prove that you were defending yourself. The judge will sentence you for murder. Even if you honorable take down a criminal that deserves it.
Sagrotan Just about the only time i ever hear this argument is by usually young guys in general who have virtually no real life combat experience. when you are ambushed only one thing matters period, that is getting away from the situation preferably with you life, or buying time for others to escape. When you are ambushed you are always at a disadvantage for a whole host of reasons. As such the best course of action is almost always to run or give up whatever attacker wants with little to no resistance. As was stated only if someone's life is at stake would you want to fight back contrary to popular opinion this is not pacifist behavior nor is it encouraging to the criminal, well with exception if you do not report the crime.
Indeed adrenaline can keep them charging you despite horrific injuries. In history we have examples ( such us the charge of the dead men) of people that should be dead and died after a while; keep fighting through will power and adrenaline
@@inquisitortheodoreordoxeno3826 Well , adrenaline or not , ANY person , hit by the HEex , poisoned bullet will be death for good in a second . Such a charge , simply, tore the whole body apart in an instant. We used such ammunition , against the Soviets bloody NKVD units in Western Ukraine . Work like a charm, believe me !
nukes are for bottom feeders ,once u've rained death from an orbiting satellite ,nukes feel like party poppers and DON'T GET ME STARTED on killer robots being reprogrammed and coming back to bite u in the ass!
That is why I use avast anti virus (The free vertion) and windows fire wall... Everyone knows that offence is the best defence, even if it gets me killed in the process! And what is an better offence then a nuke?
No. Simply carry a cane. Trust me. A cane will ward off most attackers, especially if it's of hard wood. A simple bash to the head, from a distance, and they will lose heart.
My martial arts instructor is also a corrections officer. Something he made sure to note: if you are attacked by someone using a knife... you will probably get stabbed. Probably more than once. It will hurt. A lot. The anti-knife techniques, you will use as you are being repeatedly stabbed, in a desperate attempt to stop the attack before you're beyond medical help. ...BTdubs, we are also taught to run first.
I'm training Ninjutsu and I am also trained to defend against many "knife attacks" that we do in training. If someone attacks me in that fashion I can defend myself in 100% of the cases, no matter how fast the opponent is. Then we also practiced those techniques against realistic knife attacks. The result was that in EVERY case I would have gotten stabbed - in HALF of the cases I'd be dead. So I stand by everything Metatron said. First technique against knife: Run! If someone has the intent to stab and kill you and you are unarmed it is very unlikely you'll get out of the encounter unharmed,
As a person who has trained in Aikido for over 25 years he is absolutely correct. I can't stand teachers that have knife defense classes, it gives the wrong sense of confidence to people who do not understand
J Crif Yeah, I'm also an aikido practitioner and while our sensei has shown us some disarming techniques he says "Hey, if there's a guy with a knife threatening you, don't try any of this, just give him what he wants or run away as fast as you can, because otherwise you'll be risking your life for what? Maybe your cellphone and some money?".
my sensei always thaught us to always avoid at all costs engaging in a situations of life of death, but he says if you must face someone with a knife, you should be aware that you ARE going to be cut, or stabbed, he thaught us to deal with it as quickly as possible and run
I'm really late to the party, but it's 2021, and this is still good information. I agree with all the points you made. If you ever find yourself in a knife fight, you already lost. About armor: In the U.S.A., it's normal to see police wearing ballistic armor as a matter of course. Even here in Oregon, which is generally pretty rural. Ballistic armor can be difficult/impossible to acquire for some people depending on where they live, but here, I consider it a worthwhile investment. There are a number of companies making vests that are flexible and lightweight enough to be worn regularly, and will protect against most handgun rounds. They are generally not very discreet, though. If I lived somewhere that stabbings were more prevalent than shootings, I might go the mail shirt route as well. It might be a little heavier than some modern ballistic armor (depending on a number of factors), but it will usually be thinner, more concealable, more breathable, and provide better coverage as well. Some ballistic armor will protect against stabs to some degree, and some will not. If you are concerned about both, check to make sure it's rated against both. And, of course, no armor can protect what it doesn't cover. If someone has a gun aimed at your head, "Omae wa mou shindeiru!"
Also I noticed that if one suddenly feels nervous, trust those instincts as it is often the subconscious picking up something you don't actively notice. So there is always a chance to avoid a dangerous situation, but alas it is sometimes too late.
Alendon Valdor My dad can throw a knife,...a few knife's actually very accurately very fast with pinpoint accuracy. Where he learned that I've no idea,...and i can't do the same,...I'll be able to hit a big board and it will stick, but my father can throw it from a distance and exactly know were it will hit and in a blink of an eye throw 2 more fast, freaky really.
run like Forest Gump and don't look back, or just be a pacifist like most people alive today. humans are peaceful 99.9999% of the time. and the other times not so peaceful.
People don't realize that a knife gives your attacker the kind of advantages you train for years in martial arts to achieve. The edge of the blade concentrates the force of the blow.
@@sanjivjhangiani3243 Also people don't realise how fast a knife attack is. If someone has made the decision to kill someone with a knife, it will be over in about 5 seconds.
I've been in martial arts for years. I know knife defense techniques as taught in various styles. I figure that my chance of successfully applying them hovers near zero. Glad to see this video.
"Police officers need 10 feet to react..." As a retired law enforcement officer, I can tell you this is VERY OPTIMISTIC for this type of shooting drill. Dennis Tueller who invented the "Tueller Drill" (sometimes referred to as the 21-foot rule) proved that an officer needs at least 21 feet of space to draw and fire a round BEFORE the assailant reaches them (or about 2 seconds of time from start of the draw to the target's reaction to being shot). That is for ONE shot. It often takes multiple shots to put down an assailant. Your flashlight defense is a well thought out, commonly used "less lethal" defense in the US. I love the SureFire 6P flashlight for its power and durability. A good "bezel smash" (striking with the lamp end of the flashlight) to the bridge of the nose is a real fight stopper. I have used it on a number of occasions.
***** Try it. Get a friend to come at you with a training blade and he has to stop the moment you have drawn your side arm and shouted BANG! I have done these drills ... And you also know that he is coming! In the real world you will NOT so your reaction time can be cut in half or more ...
You can't really train for a real knife fight. Every person uses the knife differently and if you train against your gym buddy, you only learn to defend from his personal way of attacking.
@@evenaarek1042 they actually train with sharp knifes in the Philippines. you can see the kali " guru's " with cut marks on there arms from decades of training
Like many of the comments, the martial arts system I used had a strong belief in knife fighting. My instructor said "if your opponent has a knife, run away"
I train in 3 styles of martial arts and all three say run if you can only engage in a fight if there is absolutely no choice because in a real life situation youll forget most of what youve been taught and you dont fight in the same way you train
I mean it's the range, and lack of protection you see the same thing if you study machete fighting. Which is that both people die. And in unarmored swordfighting. It's just far too dangerous.
I was stabbed while living in an American city. There were no fancy techniques. I punched him in the neck and took off. I had wounds on my neck and torso. I was lucky. The guy was arrested later and jailed for about 2 weeks. Good video brother.
@@kevinsnyder2026 ayyyyyy - not surprised. Sorry to hear about that though, fam. I went to flight school with a guy by your name, I hope you both are doing well.
Many of the frank realities that you mentioned in this video echo what I was taught about hand to hand self defense by the US Army. In my personal experience, your reasoning is sound and widely accepted in the professional martial community.
Mike Baker thats the problem with our culture today isnt it. Everyone is so mesmerized by Hollywood and impractical and flashy training they neglect reality. most attacks come by surprise in my experience.
Mike Baker that's true and I completely agree I'm not in the military but my mom was a marine and taught me how to defend against these realities and what to do
Armor also makes a real difference. My cousin was in the air force and got into a knife fight with an insurgent once, the terrorist was an idiot though and I guess he didn't know he was wearing a ballistic insert on his chest. So the knife got stuck in the fabric and ceramic.
I frankly agree on most of the points, but i have to adress 2 of them: 1. In life or death situation, don`t think what is legal or illegal. Don`t even put this shit in your mind, it can pop up in the middle of the brawl, and instead of reacting, you`ll just focus on "not doing them any harm". Don`t think about anything, just do what your body is programed to do. If 3 guys start walking toward me, and everyone of them looks like they have invisible watermelon under each arm, or i`ll se blade in corner of my eye, i`m not gonna ask them "hey, we are going to just fuck each other up, or is it life or death?". Nobody should have to. And what they suppose to say? How would that work out? What kind of defense would they put in court? "Your highness, we only wanted to knock his front teeth out, because we didn`t like his stupid mug" "Compeling case, with lot of hard evidence. Defender is goin to jail, while these three poor men can walk free now"... Beside situation where one of them has wealthy daddy or said daddy is a lawyer(fuckers) nobody will belive that normal person with no previous assault charges just jumped at 3 guys out of nowhere. Just beat them up, and run away. Spit in the face, kick to the nuts, and off we go. You survived, then onto next problem- what will happen now? Will i have problem with police? Should i even call them? He attack me, i did nothing wrong, let HIM worry. Why the fuck is this my problem that this cunt jumped at me, and it is me who have to be careful??? I once walked down the road, having bad day, guy driving past me splashed me with water from a puddle, so i let rip a cluster of curses adressing him. So he stopped, got out of the car, and attacked me. Just like that, maybe he had bad day also. Well it was about to get worse. And how much time i had to assess the situation, you think? I just reacted. He grabbed my coat, so i kneed him in the stomach, pushed him onto the fence and smacked him few times. Nothing fancy, nothing dwadly- just a few straight ones in the nose. Three or four, i don`t remember. Just let him go and walked away. How that was my fault? I didn`t dirve too fast, disregarding pedestrians, i didn`t attack. I just finished the thing. Don`t worry about legal/illegal, just make sure, that the other guy won`t knock your teeth out. And that applies to all assaults. Even weaponless. One guy will smack you, other will kick you, third, to top them off, will drop a concrete piece on your head, because he is high on adrenaline and to proove to them he is tough, will do something really nasty. So do a calculation, what is better? Be mutilated for the rest of your life, because some drunk fuck wanted to play, or teach him a life lesson and walk home faster, before police arrives? 2. I don`t think mail is such a good idea. It so happens, i got once "stabbed" in the gut with a beer bottle. It wasn`t even broken, y`know "rose", guy just grabbed it and clubbed me in the stomach with the neck of the bottle, when i hit him in the face, we fought over the fact, he slapped his girlfriend or some stupid shit like that, i was drunk. And let me tell you, sheer force of that almost broke my ribs, and breathing really hurt. Got out victorious, but while i had a giant yellow bruise on my ribs for a two weeks, he probably got a black eye for only a few days. And that was through rather thick winter jacket. Knife don`t have to penetrate body to do it`s thing. Do experiment and hit your forearm with open hand, then do it with the same strenght, but use your knuckles. Hurts, no? Now imagine the same strenght compressed to a one millimeter point. Many people use dull blades all the time, because they don`t know how to maintain the blade, or knife is just cheap and get dull really quickly. Doesn`t matter- if one would get hit with it, he/she will keel over with broken ribs or trauma to internal organs, and chainmail won`t stop the force. But if you want to have something, that won`t let knife point to run through you? Proper leather jacket- thick pig skin, the long kind, covering hips, not this shirt-like, thin shit that is in fashion now, and proper military trousers- this real kind, dense material, heavy, that can keep one relatively cool in the summer and warm in the winter. Beside thin bladed dagger, or a screw driver filed down to a nasty ice pick(or full lenght sword of course), proper leather jacket and military trousers can stop knife, and have one advantage over proposed mail shirt- it has sleeves and legs. At the very least i can defend myself like with vambraces. It`ll hurt like hell, but i won`t bleed and can kick the guy without worrying about cuts
Nice video. Good points. Strong philosophy. I find myself in agreement. However, I do want to share a quote from a comic book that I think is relevant. The comic is Punisher (I don't know the date or the number, I read it over 20 years ago), and Frank Castle (aka, The Punisher) is about to be involved in a knife fight (one that he actually can't run from). His inner monologue talks about him getting prepared (he even has a flashlight that he uses in the fight), but one thing he says right before he engages is this: "In a knife fight you're going to get cut. Expect it. Accept it." I thought those were wise words, because knowing that you will be injured and experience pain could prevent you from shutting down when it happens. (I never thought that comic would come up again, and it's curious that he used a flashlight too.)
that's actually a good point I've been in a few scraps where someones came at me with a knife, if you cant get away you ARE GOING TO GET SLICED GOOD DEAL, but the best thing you can do in that situation is try and knock over (DO NOT TRY TO DISARM) your attacker and try to GTFO.
My better fight instructors always said that in any fight you will get hit. Nobody doesn't get hit. If it's a knife fight, then the same carries through. Unless you have a reason to stay that is worth dying over, then run.
Having accepted such a possibility allows a person to do better when the time to act arises. Anyone interested in warrior philosophy/mentality should read different translations of the Hagakure.
My uncle (who's a detective) once blinded me with a powerful flashlight. It had a strobe setting and until then I never realized how effective a damn light could be. It blinded and disoriented me for at LEAST 10 seconds. Very effective.
Yep, was going the say, first thing we were taught in advanced MCMAP, gain distance if they are armed and you're not prepared. Do not engage a threat when you are at a disadvantage and if you're unarmed, disengage. There are times when you can engage them, but on a battlefield in full kit which means you have a large portion of your vitals protected is not the same as being on the streets. It's very easy for someone to nick an artery or tendon with the first stab and end the fight right there.
My friend died trying to stay and fight, he was stabbed and cut over 100 times he died in a alley behind the school in the alley! Run for your life before it’s too late it was a terrible scene to see, I never forget it’s not something that you want to go through
Ricky Burton shit, bro... sorry for your friend. Died brave at least. I got a huge knife scar on my forearm, as a guy tried to hijack my car with me inside, my left arm was lying on the door, and as my gear was at first, I manage to go from inert to 80 in a few secs, but the guy was really fast and still bleed me a lot. That was an extremely irresponsible response, cause I haven't seen any weapon at all. I got lucky it was a blade, but what if it was a gun? The blade could have many resistant diseases as well. Probability would be high that this comment would never exist. In resume, under totally unexpected violent situation, we never think straight. There's no manual for life as is said. I don't know about your friend, but maybe he could not see another way of winning the situation, maybe he was cornered. I believe in Odin and Norse stuff, so as far as I know, he became an Emherjer (died in combat) and his soul was carried warmly by a hot valkjr, and is feasting with other brave men and women at the halls of Valhall, among heroes and gods. A nice virtue. Still, down here in Midgard (our healm) a tragic story. My regards. Shadow hide you, bro.
My distant cousin had a better ending, with just one guy attacking him with a knife. Cuz wasn't formally 'trained' but he went by good instinct... he was probably trying to grab the arm but instead grabbed the blade (still has the big scar in his palm). He took the knife away and killed the guy. To learn what really happens, watch prison surveillance videos where guys get stabbed. In real life, walking in the streets, or even ordering at a take-out 1/ don't expect to be warned 'OK, we're going to attack you now 2/ or guy may distract you with his talk, or offer a helping hand, and then suddenly he's stabbing you, and you didn't even see it 3/ or he has buddies .. in other words, don't expect a 'fair fight' ... anytime a stranger(s) are being aggressive, be aware that you are in deadly situation. It's BS when the legal beagles worry about "Oh, just use enough force , but not too much force." Legally or morally, my take is that a stranger who's aggressive move is placing you in danger, so either run or use lethal force. Trust your gut when a stranger approaches.
The first thing my judo teacher told about things like this: "if its a robber. Your wallet is not more valuable than your life or health. If its a killer. RUN. AWAY!"
@Borsalino Kizaru Really? Martial arts is only sparring? You have a fake master then. Try taking an actual combat form like marine core martial arts or Krav that the Israeli army does.
43 years old and never attacked by man with knife... Guess I was lucky. To do list for tomorrow: - by an extra strong small flashlight - by chain armor
Here in Brazil we have a popular saying when something is useless and it'll only cause harm to everyone: "It's like a knife fight". It come from another dictate that says in a knife fight "the loser dies on the streets and the winner dies in the ambulance".
Most self protection expects and martial arts instructors advise 'le parkour' in the event of knife-confrontation. However, all the techniques may give slight edge when confronted by show-off drunkard and not determined agressor - it might be all the difference between being just cut instead of bleeding to death within minute, or having vital organ damaged by accident.
Hey Piotr ~ I am NOT an expert + I am not familiar with the term 'le parkour', but I agree that any knowledge may give the individual an edge. Personally, I would run whenever possible - it's a different story when have to defend someone else. What 'Metatron' says makes a lot of sense - Stay safe.
Big Black Dragon right? Like i wanna knock the guy for it, but its just practical for a stabbing, which happen. Lol hell i might wear it myself someday
@@VentiVonOsterreich Stabbing leaves you bleeding out slowly if it's not you're vitals. And if there's no one around to know you've been injured no one will call an ambulance. You'd be lucky to be stabbed in the right spots to die a supposedly quicker and less painful death. The quickest death was said to have been through the use of the Guillotine, yet you can't ask those who were killed by it if it truly was painless. No one who died can tell you, "yes, I felt nothing".
My instructor in 1988 was a retired marine. He always said, “when confronted by an opponent armed with a knife...run.” If you absolutely can’t run then be resolved that you will bleed and drop your opponent with all haste while minimizing where you will get cut. Thank you for this video.
i love that everyone brings Military personnel into the discussion like they are some authority on martial arts. they aren't even though the modern Marine corp has the Mcmap(marine corp martial arts program) its actually pretty useless. they only train for a few hours and even the highly trained special ops teams like, green berets, army rangers, navy seals, force recon marines etc have at most 60 hours of martial arts training. thats not even enough to actually be good enough to defend yourself with
I can just imagine punching a mugger unconscious and screaming "ROMA VICTOR!!!" at the top of my lungs, with a frenzied expression and spit flying from my mouth.
Thank you for this video! As a former law enforcement officer I can attest to many of your points. I've met several martial artists who came out at the wrong end of knife and street fights. Luckily none of them died, but they had to re-think almost everything they had learned had to be unlearned.
One could argue that wearing armor all the time is getting close to being paranoid, but hey, better paranoid and alive than not paranoid and dead in an alley looking like a swiss cheese.
i don't see why wearing armor should be considered paranoid carrying a weapon or a pepper spray, is it considered paranoid? nope they are just different tools for basically the same purpose
stefano19827 Personally I don't consider it paranoid, but you know people, as soon as you take measures against something that MIGHT happen (running into a guy that wants to make swiss cheese out of you, to make use of my previous example), they'll consider you paranoid as if you're expecting to get stabbed or something. Same as when you''re carrying pepper spray, a knife, etc. they just think you're paranoid and expecting to be attacked at every corner while you're just prepared for a situation that might never occur, but better safe than in a coffin.
You're wrong. it is far better to be dead than live a life of being so paranoid about people you have to wear armour under your tanks. it's fucking mental. Not that many people get stabbed. More people die from road accidents. Why not just wear armour on your fucking car. Just drive a tank. better yet, just fucking live in a bunker your whole life because it's a safe space. FFS.
Meta: You might think I’m a nutter for doing this, but Me thinking: you can’t be thaaaat crazy when it comes to self defense right? Meta: I wear chain mail every day Me: nah you’re crazy lol Great video man. Someone linked me the vid in a thread on another website full of videos about knife self defense. As much as everyone thinks they can do it, you can’t just disarm your opponent or hit them with a quick combo and win a fight. People use knives in these assaults because of how quick, simple, and effective they are. You will likely not win, nevertheless without taking a few blows yourself.
When he talked about wearing chain mail everyday, I thought it sounded pretty normal to me. When I suggested this to others before knife crime was so common, people laughed at me though. I remember this story where a guy got robbed at a cash point and when he got home he noticed slash marks on the back of his hooded top. He didn't realise it but he'd been wearing slash resistant clothing...after that day he set out to buy more. Slash resistant isn't enough of course, I'd only go with chain mail. Nothing less.
Filipino Martial Artist here, and this reminds me of the time when I started out and my instructors told us that the best, almost 100% successful move we can do in a self-defense scenario is to run away. I've since passed on that advice whenever I'm asked to help train or introduce newbies to the art. Brilliant video, great insight, though I'm not sure how many of us can apply that advice regarding armor.
shikamaru0915 A lot of teachers tell you that a fight you avoided is the best fight. So yes, telling your pupils to run is better. Fight ONLY as a final means of defense.
Agreed. Not enough instructors tell you up front that the best thing to do is the run. Martial arts is what you use when you have no choice but to stay and fight. And in most cases it's useless because you are unlikely to be facing a single opponent. It's likely to be two or more so unless you are very strong, very fast, very well trained, and your opponents have no idea what they're doing martial arts will not save your day.
You can also store assault riffles for imaginary terrorists that will paradrop into your lounge room. Maybe not the best example of good weapon laws lol.
I envy ye Texans. I'm not American and I will get in trouble for carrying a pocket knife here where I'm from. But If I was a Texan, I'd straight up be some Caucasus highlander with the complete set of weapons (a pistol, saber, big ass dagger, a rifle, and a coat with bullet cartridges on the chest) for no reason than just to exercise my rights.
Azhar Kassim snakes are pretty bad in allot of small cities and towns. And it’s easier to chop its head off than land a head shot and risk shrapnel ricochets. Pretty useful for getting through brush to. And if needed. To put down a crack head chasing you with a needle. Witch is actually somewhat commonly my city.
I stabbed a guy so I guess I'll tell you all a story I had this gf and her family was nuts, constantly harrassing both of us, calling the cops with false allegations, ect. And he was dead set on fighting me. Well he called one day saying he was going to come fight me, I wasn't scared he did this many times. So I walked across an alley behind my home and across the road to a gas station. He pulled up in a car with 4 other people. I ran up to him hands up, he started yelling to people behind me, I was like wtf, I turn and see a blind side of 3 people behind me. I had a small pocket knife in my pocket so I pulled it out as I was trying to run past the three guys. As I was running one of the guys grabbed me and boom I turned slashed and wow. He was hurt I cut the whole bottom side of his arm from just below the elbow to his wrist. I got charged with a felony agg. Batt. With deadly weapon but after 2 years I beat the case and the other guy only got 100$ settlement. Here's a lesson folks don't come looking for shit and be surprised when you find it
This is another good reason to run. You’ll catch a case in the US. It takes years and unbelievable stress - you’ll wish you ran and called the cops for the rest of your life. I didn’t beat my case and have an assault on my record it’s absolutely fucked me I wish I had fought it but the stress got to me and I took a plea deal to make it end. Good on you for fighting two damn years.
Most sensible discussion on this topic I've heard. I've practiced Judo and even my reaction time is not enough to catch a person who is intending to stab me with hidden blade, which is easy to stab repeatedly with. 10 feet? even 20 feet is not advisable, best just throw the money and run away.
Same experience. Despite doing several years of 'practical' stuff like Thai Boxing, it always manages to surprise me how slow I react when someone suddenly physically grabs my shoulder on the street. Same thing as when driving, your reaction time will be 1-2 seconds when something surprising happens - and if someone is planning to attack you, they will try to get the first sucker punch or stab in before you know what's going on. I agree on Avoid & Run tactic.
If someone comes at you with a gun, their intent usually is not to kill unless there is some prior relationship. If someone comes at you with a knife however, it's a lot more personal. So there's a higher chance of them killing you if you let them get you in weapons range.
I studied some knife fighting concepts in Kenpo, about 20 years ago. The first thing the instructor (Paul Mills) said before every class was that the best strategy was to run away. He showed (maybe it was his assistant instructor) us pictures of knife wounds; that was enough to convince me.
at the beach, walking to the corner to put the trash out, living on the coast of N.C. the entire community almost never wore shoes since it was such a beach community, at most you d see people in flip flops until winter came.
Studied Kali for years.....been in 2 situations where I had to go knife to knife and went to prison for both. You are right about almost everything here. Its NOT some fancy art thing. It's a chop contest. But, I am very grateful that I had all the practice with knives in my past. Not planning on going to the penitentiary again but I dont intend on getting killed either.
@John Ghost This comment section is full of fantasizers who are essentially fabricating stories to agree with Metatron in a really gauche, roundabout manner. If you're curious about what I mean, there's some phenomenon where people (usually with a few anti-social traits) fantasize specifically about self-defense situations and have daydreams about it. It's like a recurring shower thought for them. I can't think of the term but it's part of forensic psychology. Look up the Michael Dunn case, or hell, tons of cases similar to his. Arghh I'm too lazy to find the info on the journal publishing. There is a small but noteworthy group of people with CCWs who have this hero complex effect going on, making them much more likely to overreact in tense situations.
tried to explain to a few future gang members that in a knife fight one goes to the morgue, the other goes to the hospital, even if you win a fight you lose a fight
m0nkEz you've got me mixed up. Raw intelligence and discipline are useless without the conviction to use them, same as lacking discipline or intelligence of when to use your badassery. All I'm saying is that there is almost always a winner in a knife fight (almost due to the off-chance of both fighters being killed; but, even then, someone ended the fight. Winners usually do that). It's a pussy mentality to go in thinking you're going to lose one way or the other. Go hard or don't go home. Guy in the morgue lost. Guy in the hospital won. Ones alive, others dead.
Breezy Baby yeah, but the guy who figured out how to avoid the fight in its entirety goes home without getting billed for the ambulance ride. Good decision-making involves weighin all options and choosing to execute the one with the best likely outcome. The ability to execute that decision is not the point of the conversation. Choosing to walk away from a fight doesn't mean you couldn't have won it.
I absolutely love your reasoning/logic here. SPOT ON I am an expert in NOTHING. However, I've been around, as I am a retired Combat Medic ( Baghdad, class of 2004), and have worked in surgery at Level 2 Trauma Centers. I have treated many injuries for a lot of different reasons, to include knife fights. One victim I helped take care of had been stabbed 56 times, and had her throat cut from ear to ear. She survived, the attacker got away. I don't tell the above story for any other reason, than, hopefully, emphasize your point concerning the outcome of such a confrontation. Distance, as you show, IS your best friend, you have to manage it, and to do that, you can't have your head down, or so focused on the music your listening to, that you don't see the approaching threat. Lastly, in support of your demonstrating how an attacker will hide a weapon until the last moment, Doug Marcaida, a Philippino Martial Arts practitioner said in a video: "A weapon should be felt, not seen" He was, referring to the weapon you may have for defending yourself (as in, don't let the attacker see it until nescessary). Thanks again for the video/information. Justin
This was awesome. I'm old, and have spent years learning judo and jujitsu, and have been saved from an attempted mugging, three assaults at a bar, and a bunch of guys who taught I was a gay man and wanted to bash. But all the things I learned about knives there wouldn't have worked. Actually learned a bunch from an ex-marine who had been in jail.
Perfectly explained. tutto e vero. All people who pay for "self defense" classes should see this video. every time I see a "knife defense" video or lesson, I roll my eyes. *There is no knife defense, only survival (if you're lucky).*
Wrong, there are knife defense techniques that work, maybe not on the first attack, which is usually a surprise, but on subsequent attacks, once you're aware of the danger, you can defend if you take the proper training. That's also why I watch people who are closer to me than they should be Very, very carefully.
In Krav Maga, we had a little "game". It comes once in a while, so we dont get used to it. During warm up, our trainer send one of his students out, to talk about our contract. When the student went out, he gave him/her a training knife and told him/her to hide it and stab the other students during the warm up (we warmed up with running and if two individuals face each other one throws some punches and the other tries to block them and gets away). Everyone got stabbed. Doesnt matter how big he was and how small the "knifefighter" was. It shows that the knife is the worst weapon.
Anything but stupid. The point is not to stab the fellow students but to let them see how devastating a spontaneous attack can be, and to disabuse them of thinking all problems have a solution, if only you were skilled enough, or even that you can ever be sure of being sufficiently prepared.
its not really that realistic, as many commentators said, the 'attacker' has the possibility of out running you. so, what you want is to run to a nearby weapon, preferably something with long reach. And then after you armed yourself, continue to retreat/run while keeping "an eye" on the attacker. But still, the advice was good. Attempt to retreat unless you got someone or something to protect, then you try to fight.
Sergiu Sprintar idk man, I think hauling ass is the best option still. The time you take looking around to find a weapon that might not even work out is enough time to get stabbed. That's probably only a good idea if you have to stand and fight.
Joanie Kennedy you are a total badass MS Kennedy! Love black powder arms myself. Very few ladies are into such antiquated arms. Damn you man, I was supposed to go to bed...and now I'm sitting here watching this fantastic video. Thank you for the time you've put in and giving the best tip...run away!
Anomaly I am not so sure about this, but I think that there is a very large degree of legal latitude given to someone under attack, i.e that the defender can do a great many number of things to ensure that they are safe, of course existing within the bounds of reason. :) For specifics with regards to where you live, of course I'd recommend you look up local laws!
John Dee Oh I'm aware that this is not the case lol... What I meant is- I wish it were that way. In my region, we have a three strike rule... You get three self defence strikes before it turns into an assault charge. Personally, I think if someone attacks me without provocation- I should be free to defend myself to the extent that I feel is appropriate... Criminals shouldn't have more protection than their victims in my personal opinion. Thank you for pointing it out though. Anyone reading should definately be aware of their local laws... Many countries and states aren't so forgiving of self defence claims.
Fuck the local laws. What good is the law if you're dead? Protect yourself. Worry about the law later. Better to be alive in prison than law-abiding 6-feet under.
I get what you say but if that were the case, if i manage to knock my assaillant down, i could torture him ( if he injured or killed a loved one before me for example ) in any way and that would be OK ? I could break every bones in his body and that would be self defense ? ... It is very tempting to think in terms of bad guy and victim in those kind of situations but when designing a law, we should always consider a human being versus another human being, the victim can turn into a agressor very fast in crisis situation.
manictiger and if you can't not get in a fight. Make sure you are the first to start it. If you have a knife use it, and use prison rules... Sure, you have 8 years boxing, but what is the other guy's deal? Does he have a knife? Three knives? A gun, made? You don't know and you don't know if he will use deadly force. Better to go to trial than a morgue. So step 1: Don't get in a fight. If step 1 doesn't work go to step 2. Step 2: End a fight.
This video does not upset me at all, because you're right. The best way to survive a knife/gun fight is to run away. Great video, but a lot of(Rambos) will disagree.
I agree. Running away is great if youre Bolt. Its not easy for an O40 to run away from a 20 yrs old brawler. And in many cases (into a bar, in a crowd etc) you CANT run away.
Really a lot depends on what kind of people you run with. I think you'll find that the majority of knife attacks happen between people that know one another. I suppose in some places the statistics might be different.
The next step in rehabilitating proper men's fashion. Normalize armor.

But Gregg had two knifes.
A knife attack/stabbing is NOT a "knife fight."
A knife fight is 2 IDIOTS willingly or semi-willingly fighting each other with knives.
The reason it happens is often because of pride, or petty insults.
If you have time to take out your knife and make it into a duel, you're a fucking idiot who could have left(most likely).

A V. except i am unknown so i cant die in a truck. i die in places no one would know.
A V hey there butiful ;)
Aciej I suppose it depends on how fast the ambulance comes. Is that really a gamble you want to take?
1. Wait for the assailant to attack.
2. Parry the attack and close in.
3. Grapple and restrain the assailant.
4. Disarm the assailant’s weapon.

Yes you can disarm a person, blade or gun. That being said, it is extremely difficult and doesn't look like what you see on tv or in martial arts tournaments.
Your options:
1) RUN
2) carry a weapon (legally)
3) fight fair (you will die)
4) fight dirty (you may live)
Does fighting dirty mean along with avoiding the weapon trying to batter certain weak places like the testes, throat, liver, chest, eyes, or general head?
yep it takes split second timing that takes years of practice.
@@Kakaragi ya, my shihan told us to block with the back of tour arms. youll bleed but it wont be fatal. and you can still fight back.
@@Kakaragi it also means if there is ANYTHING within reach that can be useful, take it and fight to kill. If you are only fighting to not die, your chances are lower. Even a oversized rock is good for bashing, or if it has sharp edges for cutting.
But all of this is second to run.
Ironically, carrying a weapon isn't useful in many cases because if you're blindsided, chances are you're going to be dead before you can:
a) remember you have the weapon
b) reach for the weapon
c) fight back
If the first strike by the assailant is in the right place, you have... 10 seconds until you're dead.
Hagane no Saiyajin yep, eyes gouging, groin kicks, ear slaps, knee kicks, hitting the nose with the palm of the hand, and throat punches, anything that’ll give you an advantage.

Also, the attacker leaves themselves open in two ways:
1) Their weapon may get damaged.

Watch “Shot Caller”
It would be way to shocking for people. Extreme realism is not something you want for a movie, which the point of it is to entertain. Real life videos of people getting killed or doing a mortal combat is terrifying, even more if you have seen those things in person.

Funny I'm 40 years old and your the first person who is honest about shit. I was trained to carry a Gun. First thing they told us was that you can be stabbed 30 times within 10 foot of a person who weilds a knife.

I had a friend who got into an argument in a bar with a guy. As he was leaving, the guy walked up behind him and stabbed him five times in the side of the stomach and chest, all before he really had time to even react. That's how most knife "fights" go down in reality. Luckily he recovered and was fine.
This is true. Situational self awareness is the first line of defense. Do not EVER turn your back on an aggressor.

I remember seeing this self-defense class where they had people spar with markers, and the goal was to mark up the other person as much as possible. By the end of the exercise, everyone was covered with ink. Then the instructor said, "That's why you don't try to fight someone who has a knife."

tanner norwood Still, if someone isn't threatening physical harm, killing them shouldn't be the first move.
Edgy Bastage I don't see it that way, words are often used to prevent ones death or arrest... I see no reason a forced home invader shouldn't die if caught.
They could easily say "sorry I didn't mean to..." Then pull out a gun or a knife. So kill or be killed would work to prevent death.
As a lifelong martial artist I have nothing but respect for this video. Well done!
You kids keep away from him."
Did you feel that you were under immediate threat of attack?
Wouldn't work like that in Sweden. We even get charged with assault, if we would defend ourselves, against a burglar.

As was stated only if someone's life is at stake would you want to fight back contrary to popular opinion this is not pacifist behavior nor is it encouraging to the criminal, well with exception if you do not report the crime.

never bring a knife to a knife fight.
Never draw a weapon you don't intend to use.
Bring a bigger knife
*"HAH, you call that a noif mate?"*
Actually that is a noif, but this... this is a FUCKING CLAYMORE!
No. Simply carry a cane. Trust me. A cane will ward off most attackers, especially if it's of hard wood. A simple bash to the head, from a distance, and they will lose heart.
And as far as I know in most places canes are legal. After all it mainly used as a walking aid and not a weapon.
Like how you added a BTdubs there lol.
RUN AS FAST AS YOU CAN !!!! we are teach to run fast too
I'm training Ninjutsu and I am also trained to defend against many "knife attacks" that we do in training.
If someone has the intent to stab and kill you and you are unarmed it is very unlikely you'll get out of the encounter unharmed,
As a former US Marine, and current security guard, this is the best advice considering an assailant with a knife.
Great video.
As a person who has trained in Aikido for over 25 years he is absolutely correct. I can't stand teachers that have knife defense classes, it gives the wrong sense of confidence to people who do not understand
Knife defense is a gimmick. Real self-defense teaches exactly what he's saying.
A real knife defense course would train you to run fast.
Juan Maidana but what if he's try to steal all five of my Big Macs?
my sensei always thaught us to always avoid at all costs engaging in a situations of life of death, but he says if you must face someone with a knife, you should be aware that you ARE going to be cut, or stabbed, he thaught us to deal with it as quickly as possible and run

The best form of self defence, is to never get into a situation where you need to defend yourself.
Moromillas Radec But there are times you can't avoid the situation.
Moromillas Radec You sadly don't control that.
Interesting. Though I find the idea of throwing away your weapon a bit counter productive XD
Does penetrating the attacker's soul with my piercing eyes count?
no but if you have a sword cane from cold steel like i do that will do the trick.

I understand the joke just fine. It's "chainmail" i'm having problem with here. The word, not the armor.
This is the best comment ever.
And this is why knives are so dangerous.
Small, but deadly.
Yes I think I did add a note there. Thank you for watching and commenting ;)
And a Police Officer dont need the extra time for to pull his gun out of his clothes...
*****
Try it. Get a friend to come at you with a training blade and he has to stop the moment you have drawn your side arm and shouted BANG!
I have done these drills ...
And you also know that he is coming! In the real world you will NOT so your reaction time can be cut in half or more ...
swaghauler good day officer! How are you?
That is why you have to train to get off line. That drill applies to static shooter vs. oncoming knife.
You can't really train for a real knife fight. Every person uses the knife differently and if you train against your gym buddy, you only learn to defend from his personal way of attacking.
Well, you can train by putting your life on the line and purposefully seek situations like that, but that would just be asking to be killed.
Even Aarek
I suppose train with random people every time.
Interestingly, I found this same advice in a book by Bruce Lee.
@William Russell yh which is why its best to run and only fight if theres no choice
I was stabbed while living in an American city. There were no fancy techniques. I punched him in the neck and took off. I had wounds on my neck and torso. I was lucky. The guy was arrested later and jailed for about 2 weeks. Good video brother.

Most attacks come by surprise and most weapons are either concealed or are instruments of opportunity.
I frankly agree on most of the points, but i have to adress 2 of them:
Nym Alous I approve this message 💀
Frank Castle I'm glad you approve.
To quote some great knights from an even greater movie:
*RUN AWAY!*
"We have the holy hand grenade"
My uncle (who's a detective) once blinded me with a powerful flashlight. It had a strobe setting and until then I never realized how effective a damn light could be. It blinded and disoriented me for at LEAST 10 seconds. Very effective.
Most tactical lights now a-day are small and are too much for the eye to handle.

I was going to say my Marine Corps training agrees with you, but you did it for me.
Glad to hear pal ;)
Yep, was going the say, first thing we were taught in advanced MCMAP, gain distance if they are armed and you're not prepared. Do not engage a threat when you are at a disadvantage and if you're unarmed, disengage. There are times when you can engage them, but on a battlefield in full kit which means you have a large portion of your vitals protected is not the same as being on the streets. It's very easy for someone to nick an artery or tendon with the first stab and end the fight right there.
could you like kick them in the stomach after blinding them?
Ribstein its not that easy as you say there are lots of variables in a streets
As a victim and a martial artist, I know you are 100% right. Very wise good advice. I love your work.
I would advise against following any religion at all. Sorry if that sounds like ass.
That sounds quite interesting. Can you tell me more about it or do you not want to? ^^

Here in Brazil we have a popular saying when something is useless and it'll only cause harm to everyone: "It's like a knife fight". It come from another dictate that says in a knife fight "the loser dies on the streets and the winner dies in the ambulance".
This one of the few videos giving realistic, sensible advice. Many won't like it ~ particularly the 'self protection' experts.
What 'Metatron' says makes a lot of sense - Stay safe.

i love that everyone brings Military personnel into the discussion like they are some authority on martial arts. they aren't even though the modern Marine corp has the Mcmap(marine corp martial arts program) its actually pretty useless. they only train for a few hours and even the highly trained special ops teams like, green berets, army rangers, navy seals, force recon marines etc have at most 60 hours of martial arts training. thats not even enough to actually be good enough to defend yourself with

One could argue that wearing armor all the time is getting close to being paranoid, but hey, better paranoid and alive than not paranoid and dead in an alley looking like a swiss cheese.
i don't see why wearing armor should be considered paranoid
carrying a weapon or a pepper spray, is it considered paranoid? nope
they are just different tools for basically the same purpose
stefano19827 Personally I don't consider it paranoid, but you know people, as soon as you take measures against something that MIGHT happen (running into a guy that wants to make swiss cheese out of you, to make use of my previous example), they'll consider you paranoid as if you're expecting to get stabbed or something. Same as when you''re carrying pepper spray, a knife, etc. they just think you're paranoid and expecting to be attacked at every corner while you're just prepared for a situation that might never occur, but better safe than in a coffin.
Astronomically more likely to be in a car accident than getting stabbed. Better to take a defensive driving course and wear a seat belt.

FFS.

Great video man.
Nothing less.
if it's him wearing mail it makes sense

Filipino Martial Artist here, and this reminds me of the time when I started out and my instructors told us that the best, almost 100% successful move we can do in a self-defense scenario is to run away. I've since passed on that advice whenever I'm asked to help train or introduce newbies to the art. Brilliant video, great insight, though I'm not sure how many of us can apply that advice regarding armor.
shikamaru0915 A lot of teachers tell you that a fight you avoided is the best fight. So yes, telling your pupils to run is better. Fight ONLY as a final means of defense.
Yeah, our instructor had the exact same lesson. Also went over the 'manic stabbing is almost impossible to defend against' too.
ANameThatIsn'tMyOwn lol
Absolute truth the best fight is the one you never had.

Here's a lesson folks don't come looking for shit and be surprised when you find it
Glad you beat the case. Sorry it took 2 years my dude. That’s gotta feel like forever with something like that
This is another good reason to run.
I agree on Avoid & Run tactic.
this may not be the case but gaming increases your reaction
If someone comes at you with a gun, their intent usually is not to kill unless there is some prior relationship. If someone comes at you with a knife however, it's a lot more personal. So there's a higher chance of them killing you if you let them get you in weapons range.
I studied some knife fighting concepts in Kenpo, about 20 years ago. The first thing the instructor (Paul Mills) said before every class was that the best strategy was to run away. He showed (maybe it was his assistant instructor) us pictures of knife wounds; that was enough to convince me.
This man is a legend. Wears chain mail whenever he goes out.
in a good krav maga school you will allways be taught to run away if somehow possible...
Indeed
now I know why thay are using shoes during practice...
When are you barefoot in the street?
in Asia. Yes
at the beach, walking to the corner to put the trash out, living on the coast of N.C. the entire community almost never wore shoes since it was such a beach community, at most you d see people in flip flops until winter came.
@@Chironex_Fleckeri And here we have an armchair psychologist, every bit as pathetic as the armchair warrior, only more pretentious.
@@Chironex_Fleckeri Better to be cautious and safe than unaware and dead.
if it was self defence why did you go to prison
tried to explain to a few future gang members that in a knife fight one goes to the morgue, the other goes to the hospital, even if you win a fight you lose a fight
Pussies have been saying that for millennia. Bring your A game, baby!
Sounds to me like pussies have been alive for millenia.
Breezy Baby lol, have fun with that. Discipline and intelligence have always beat raw badassery, but you can feel free to believe what you want.
m0nkEz you've got me mixed up.
SPOT ON
I am an expert in NOTHING.
Lastly, in support of your demonstrating how an attacker will hide a weapon until the last moment, Doug Marcaida, a Philippino Martial Arts practitioner said in a video: "A weapon should be felt, not seen"
He was, referring to the weapon you may have for defending yourself (as in, don't let the attacker see it until nescessary).
I rarely comment, but this is one of the VERY best knife fighting video I have ever seen. Finally truth. Thank you
Perfectly explained. tutto e vero.
All people who pay for "self defense" classes should see this video.
every time I see a "knife defense" video or lesson, I roll my eyes. *There is no knife defense, only survival (if you're lucky).*
There's an excellent knife defense. It's called running away. Fast.
Wrong, there are knife defense techniques that work, maybe not on the first attack, which is usually a surprise, but on subsequent attacks, once you're aware of the danger, you can defend if you take the proper training. That's also why I watch people who are closer to me than they should be Very, very carefully.
"I wear armour!" So you get lucky one night and the woman asks if you have protection...
Good exercise! Keeps one at their toes.
Anything but stupid. The point is not to stab the fellow students but to let them see how devastating a spontaneous attack can be, and to disabuse them of thinking all problems have a solution, if only you were skilled enough, or even that you can ever be sure of being sufficiently prepared.
mrdubcrazy stop commenting and start reading mate.
cave321 oh gawd I would spazz out and my boxing training would kick in lolol! move to fast around me I get jumpy been punched one too many times lol!
You mean the knife is the *best* weapon
I think this is the most realistic run down of a knife attack, Iv seen on RUclips thank you Metatron for this!
its not really that realistic, as many commentators said, the 'attacker' has the possibility of out running you.
so, what you want is to run to a nearby weapon, preferably something with long reach.
I find it a wonderful attribute that you are an intelligent lady who is an enthusiast in that area of arms..Oh and your quite lovely as well, an adornment/jewelry of the universe no doubt. Stay safe, stay alert, stay alive...
Respectfully your humble servant, and the 37th great grandson of King Olaf The Black of the Isle of Man and the Hebrides.
aut pax aut bellum
Thank you ! Yes I tend to like fire arms lol and their history, I do not think anything has shaped our history as much as the gun.
Yea that moment she tells you to take your clothes off and you remember you wear fuckin armor
least she knows you use protection
best comments boys
Jason M That was the best response...
Good teamwork you two
Awesome combo
"The loser of a knife fight goes to the morgue, and the winner of a knife fight goes to hospital."
I just bought armour for 20 grand, the guy said it was mithril.
it's me what a bargain!! It's supposed to be worth more than the shire and that's gotta be a few million!
why don't you just raise your defense lv to 40 and get rune armor you cheapskate
cool, are you a mage? cuz mithril armor highest advantage is that it won't get in the way of magic casting!
Hey if youre willing pay 20 grand to some bloke selling mithril then you sir are my kind of customer! I have 2 swords one called Harpē and one called Excalibur (literally next to new condition) I'll let you have them for 2 grand of course they are original one killed Medusa and the other was used by some lowly English King.
bloodndestroy lol, not wearing justiciar
Damn you man, I was supposed to go to bed...and now I'm sitting here watching this fantastic video. Thank you for the time you've put in and giving the best tip...run away!
Tar Naugrim and waiting to get an armor😂
Best cary a gun and a big stick
Same, Tar. Good night.
Just carry scutum + gladius with you
10/10 always works
9/10 probably also gets you arrested depending on country and proximity to renaissance festivals.
Only if you get caught; don't get caught!
Jaewoo Kim Not if your in pike formation
yea, those goddamn Thugs with their pike-formations :D
A sabre or a longsword works as well :)
The Metatron trying to get through airport security would be hilarious.
Self defence laws should be such that an attacker abandons his/her rights the minute they attack.
John Dee
Oh I'm aware that this is not the case lol...
Many countries and states aren't so forgiving of self defence claims.
yes
Metatron, the type of guy to wear chain mail for protected sex.
Reuben U You mean Maille armor not chainmail.
Reuben U 😂😂😂😂
those rivets stop all sorts of fluids.
Reuben U ribbed for her enjoyment takes on new meaning lol.
urgh
This guy a good talker - I’m impressed.
So the best option is to not get in a knife fight?
Rule number 1 of a knife fight: Don't get in a knife fight.
That applies to all fights. Best option for getting in a fight: Don't.
@Kazoushi
Science is still unsure of that. Not enough archaeological evidence.
manictiger and if you can't not get in a fight.
Wise words. The best defense is to see the danger before it happens and removing yourself from the situation.
This video does not upset me at all, because you're right. The best way to survive a knife/gun fight is to run away. Great video, but a lot of(Rambos) will disagree.
***** Right you are ( :
Says the guy thats going to get stabbed in the back running from a guy with a knife.
I agree. Running away is great if youre Bolt. Its not easy for an O40 to run away from a 20 yrs old brawler. And in many cases (into a bar, in a crowd etc) you CANT run away.
drh kleinert Then don't go to Bars and you will be safe ( : works for me!
Exactly, its just as big of a gamble to run, you'd be making a huge assumption that your a faster runner.
Tip for running away: learn parkour
Do you really live in such a dangerous neighborhood that you have such a high chance of a knife attack to warrant the armor?
Yes certain areas in London would!
Andras Libal better safe than sorry that’s his choice god forbid something happens he will he better off
Well its basically one time buy if you dont get hurt, but when you get hurt you dont need it after it... So one time buy.
Really a lot depends on what kind of people you run with. I think you'll find that the majority of knife attacks happen between people that know one another. I suppose in some places the statistics might be different.
Better to have it and not need it than to need it and not have it.
