    Looking to do a European River Cruise? Maybe see some islands on a Caribbean Cruise? Want to Explore the World on an Around the World Cruise? Well here are some things that all cruise passengers should know before they take a cruise.
    Filmed in Trogir, Croatia (and somewhere on the sea on the Croatian coast).
    Copyright Mark Wolters 2017
    1. Be Back on the Boat on Time. Many bigger cruise ships will not wait for late passengers and it will be the passengers job to catch up to the boat at the next port of call, which can be expensive.
    2. Do Your Research. Not every cruise is the same even if they visit the same ports. Make sure you do your research on what amenities the ship has, what kind of entertainment, the cabins, the typical passengers, etc.
    3. Cabins Will Be Small. So pack light and you may want to bring some air freshener to take care of some of those tight confine smells.
    4. Seasickness Happens. On river cruises seasickness is not a big issue, however on bigger ships it may be. Ginger, Dramamine, seabands and a patch can help.
    5. You will eat a lot on the cruise ship and you will eat well. Most cruise ships know that people love to eat and they make it their job to feed you as much as possible. Try to watch what you eat and maybe take a walk or two around the deck after dinner.
    6. Pack Your Carryon Bag with Everything You Will Need for the First Day. On larger cruise ships you may not get your luggage for a few hours, so make sure you have everything you need in your carryon bag, whether it is swimsuits for the pool or medicine it is important to pack those in your carryon bag.
    7. Don't Forget to Tip the Help. They do not get paid much and they work their butts off, so please do tip them. Your cruise line may already have it in your bill or they may leave an envelope for you to tip.
    8. Don't Bring Anything That Could Start a Fire. There are some things that are usually banned from ships and they mostly are related to heating agents that could start a fire. Also, some ships ban alcohol from outside the ship as well, also weapons and drugs are no nos.
    9. There Are Always Extra Costs. Whether signing up for excursions or a drinks package or whatever, there are usually extra costs on cruises, so the price you are quoted on may not be the end of your bill.
    10. Ask for Help if You Need Anything. Cruise ships really do go out of their way to make your trip enjoyable, so if you have any issues or requests please let the crew know. They will most likely be glad to help.
    I filmed this while on a CroiseMer Cruise through Croatia & Montenegro. All the pictures and videos were taken while on my cruise (except for my power/travel strip, I got that picture at home).

    The slot machines on cruises have lowered odds than most places. You are a captive while on the boat so there are no competing casinos and there is also no gambling commission to enforce payout percentages.

    Something to consider when cruising. The cabin that would be most appropriate for your situation. A single person on their first cruise? Get an inside cabin. It's cheaper and you won't be spending much time in it. Basically, you'll be in there to sleep.
    If you have children, you will likely want a cabin with a balcony. I learned this the hard way. This way, when it's bed time for the kids, you can sit on the balcony and read, watch TV/movies saved on your tablet, or just enjoy the sounds of the sea.

    • @emmachomao
      @emmachomao 5 лет назад +1

      K Wills , is it safe for the kids? Can they climb over the balcony and fall?

    • @thatswhatshesaid8153
      @thatswhatshesaid8153 5 лет назад

      With smaller children, I would avoid the cabins with balconies. #BetterSafeThanSorry

    • @Magic_beans_
      @Magic_beans_ Год назад

      @@emmachomaoAnything’s possible, but cruise ships do what they can to make the state rooms child-safe. On Carnival cruises, for example, State room balconies are over a meter high (42”) and made of a solid sheet of Plexiglas, so there’s nowhere to squeeze through and little risk of climbing or tumbling over. The doors leading to the balcony are heavy and lockable, so preschoolers can’t sneak out and older kids should hopefully know better.
      Of course, a little precaution goes a long way. Don’t let them hang out on the balcony unattended, lock the door when you’re not using the balcony, and if they’re old enough give the kids a safety talk. If it’s still that much of a concern, a big window is also nice so the kids can watch the scenery. (The cheapest rooms may have no exterior windows, or just a small one at adult eye level, not much fun for kids.)

    Spot on tips Mark. We've done a couple of cruises and booked our third for next January. Everything you said is good advice. All the crew are so good at their jobs and don't earn a lot so tipping (if not included in the fare paid already) is a definite must. It's been included in our fares but we still left a little extra for our cabin steward/s for their great service and sunny smiles. Cruising is a great way to travel without much stress, just so long as you read the cruise line info and follow the rules.

    Great job on the video. I'm glad you let people know about the outlets. When my wife and I dove with the great white sharks in Guadalupe Mexico, the boat was really strict on using the outlets. You had to be in your room while your stuff was charging. They would unplug anything you left charging. You had to plan well when you would charge so that you didn't miss any of the shark action.

    My husband and I LOVE cruising. My #1 tip is truly check out the cruise ship website. There is a section for FAQ'S and it will tell you everything from type of clothing to wear, alcohol restrictions, smoking areas, sample menus, deck plans, and more. Cruising is a great value vacation and we love it! 18 cruises so far. TIP these people! I tip our room steward the first day, which shocks them, and I NEVER want for anything throughout our cruise. Best $20.00 spent and usually will give more the last night. Thanks for listening.

      Wolters World Thank you so much for responding! Our cruises have extensively been in the Caribbean and Germany. I learned long ago, I tend to over pack, which left me little room for the souvenirs. Now on our cruises, I pack everything I plan to wear in a carry on sized bag and bring another bag for goodies I want to buy. I have realized I don't need so many clothes nor shoes, geez. I always bring my backpack to ensure I have needed medications, jewelry, etc., things I don't want to lose! We always eat in the main dining room for dinner. Always. If traveling with others, we find it a great place to talk about our day and plan our next days adventures. The food is always great and there are items you can try out for the first time. I vow to myself to try something new each day!

    • @tammypearson4500

      Mariel Neal Thanks for asking! Usually on a seven day cruise, I give our cabin steward $20.00 U.S. on the first day. We have NEVER had bad service or wanted for anything in our cabin since we started doing this. I leave an additional $20 for the steward when I leave.
      We eat all of our meals at dinnertime in the main dining room. We give our head waiter $30 to $50.00, depending on our service received and the assistant waiter the same or similar. We do this at separate moments. Hope this helps.

      Indeed. There is usually a Captains Night, where Evening dress is preferred. Also, if going to Norway, on a Norwegian ship, you will be paying Norwegian prices, which are very high. You will pay more for bottled
      water than you will for a bottle of wine...Make sure you have good medical insurance, as if you need to see
      an on board doctor, it will be very expensive, even if only for sea sickness pills....Take some with you, just
      in case. My sister always takes her own multi socket extension lead, as there's usually a lack of sockets.
      If you or your partner uses a wheelchair, make sure you can get ashore using the tender. Not all ships tie
      up at the quayside.

    I want to add to #10. We went on a back to back cruise for 14 days. The first night our mattress was horrible. I couldn't imagine another 13 nights sleeping on it. So I went down to Guest Services and explained my situation. An hour later I had a brand new mattress in my room. But remember to be nice to them!! As I stood in line I heard how some people treated the staff and it can be horrible. Don't yell at them because your luggage isn't in the room. They want to help you and do everything they can to make you happy. But if you yell at them or make threats, they have little incentive to make you happy. Mean people, stop being mean!

    The tip about using onshore guides vs. cruise line excursions is so true! I took a cruise in the Caribbean and quickly found out that at each port the taxi drivers could be hired all day for a flat fee. We did and saw so much more than if we had taken the excursions offered by the cruise ship line that was twice the fee of the taxi driver, tip included. For me, nothing beat the personalized service of the drivers, and they know not only the good places to see but the best places to eat and shop.

    Nothing better for me than being on the sea and reading a good book as I watch it go by. Seasickness - I've read crew members swear by green apples. Tipping - At least on the larger ships, many of the people helping you, and being so nice to you, make something like $700 a month. Even if you have tips added automatically, a bit more will make a difference as Mark said and you will see they appreciate it a lot.

      what's wrong with extended multi-port cruise? that seems to be the direction the cruising travel is going as all the new ships from the big 4 company (NCL, RCI, Carnival, MSC) have capacity of over 5000 passengers. I always pick the ships that have less than 3500 passenger capacity but the point of the cruise is to see quite few places with one trip :D

    On seasickness: My family went on a Caribbean cruise when I was 14. I was super seasick the first night, so bad that I didn't want any supper. My parents went to the dining room, and about fifteen minutes later, my father returned to the cabin and said the waiter had something for me. It turned out to be a steak and potatoes dinner, by special request from the waiter after he found out I was sick. It settled my stomach right away, and the rest of the trip was a blast. So yeah, the staff on a cruise are definitely there to take care of the passengers and to create the best possible experience!

    I went on a 6 week cruise 5 years ago, it was my first ever and hopefully not my last. I had bad motion sickness for the whole trip but I figured out what worked for me thanks to all the other elder passengers advice. I drank a lot of ginger ale, used the elevators instead of stairs, stayed away from the front half of the ship where you can feel the movement most, kept earphones in my ears as much as possible. Tablets and the wrist thingys didn't work for me. I did however eat like a pig at the restaurant most nights, the food was just so good and the staff amazing! The people at our table were wonderful and my 2 friends and I were the youngest passengers on the cruise. We were 27-28, everyone else was retired. The way we saved money was by booking online tours for each port we were visiting, instead of through the cruise company which is waaaay more expensive. It turns out we made the right choice there because everytime we were at the dinner table talking about the adventures in port, we had a much better & easier time than anyone else.

    Love your video. I went on a cruise for the first time ever and I had no idea how much walking onboard the ship I’d be doing. It was on the Carnival Cruise Miracle ship and everyday just walking to where I needed to go on the ship, I totaled over 10,000 steps on my fitness tracker. I was exhausted. So make sure you will be able to do a relatively extreme amount of walking everyday wile on a large cruise ship or be sure to get a scooter on the cruise. Otherwise do some serious fitness training before you go so you won’t be totally wiped out like I was.

    Also for the research part. We went on a Mediterranean cruise and instead of the very expensive excursions or tours we researched how to get to the city by public transport. Sometimes you cannot avoid the paid tender or drive through the harbour, but for Rome you enter Civitaveccia and it is only a short walk to the train and within 50 minutes you are in Rome. The cruise line transfer by bus was 100 dollar per person and there is a high risk of traffic jams. Don't just check the excursions the cruise line has to offer, but look for info online and you can save a lot of money.

    When it comes to tipping, it may be worth mentioning that the larger cruise lines (Carnival, RCCL, NCL...) automatically charge the suggested tips to your account. It's a standard amount split between your stateroom steward and some of the service staff. You can go to customer services to have the amounts modified if you wish. Personally I always give some extra "cash-in-hand" for above average service on top of the auto-gratuities.
    Also after your cruise many lines will send you a survey. When filling it you should absolutely mention any of the ship's staff members or officers by name who you think gave you good service. A few months ago I chatted with the Carnival Vista's director of HR and he mentioned that such mentions are very important as they can lead to "employee of the month" types of rewards for the staff and are also added to their file (which may impact future promotions).

But your video, especially the parts with you standing in your room with the water behind you, showed me it's just like a Washington state ferry ride in Seattle. I mean, I hope. I can swim, but I cannot swim out of a sunken cabin in pitch black. Maybe the balcony thing is the answer. Thank you for the info, I had no idea. Except of course to tip, duh.

    A great video for first time cruisers or even someone that hasn't cruised in awhile.
    I'll be looking up the cruise line you were on for a cruise next year. Did the crew speak English?
    This September I'm doing a Mediterranean cruise on a small cruise line but it is owned by RCCL.
    Anyway another great video!

    Another great video.
    Can you create a video on what's usually included in cruise cost and what are the typical extra expenses that can be expected on cruises. Maybe with an appropriate cost estimatation though I realise it's dynamic.

    Mark, regarding cabin locations, you should add that it's best to avoid cabins within 2-3 doors of the fitness center if on the same floor. The vibrations from dumbbells hitting the floor or people jumping up and down will carry pretty far in a ship no matter how big it is.

    My only experience on a cruise ship was to Antarctica. The ship was relatively small (it had room for about 100 passengers), but this was in November of 2001, and so most Americans had canceled their travel plans and so there were only 50 of us on board. There were hikes at each stop and lectures every night, and the food was quite good.

    In my experience on going on board 17 cruise ships i have been using a sneaky trick for people not willing to spend money on packages that include beers, coke and so on. So basically on board packages can be expensive, and most ships include free drinks like water, lemonade and juices and i'm not really a big fan of lemonade, so what i do to secretly sneak drinks like coke or beer is to hide them in plastic tea bottles since beer and tea have a similarity in color no one would notice and i just store them in my rooms mini fridge.

    We cruise often, (12 under our belt now ) when making shore excursions and you use the ships excursions they will wait for you. Now if you plan your own shore excursion, beware that if you are late, like Mark said,...... the ship will leave you .

    Many people consider travel insurance to be a rip-off, but if you're a person who gets sick rather easily (allergies, motion sickness, etc.) or are planning outdoor activities like scuba, zip-lining, parasailing, hiking, travel insurance is a good option. It also often pays for delays, cancellations, and missed connections to and from port, and can cover medical costs. Medical charges on cruise ships and at ports of call can be astronomical!

    If you liked your cruise experience and decide to do more in the future consider to use the same cruise company again and ask if they have a fidelity card or something, there are some nice perks with those

    • @caseyvee4419
      @caseyvee4419 7 лет назад

      I have those for a couple of lines. Good item to have, I only get small perks since I have not taken enough cruises to get big ones, but the little extras I get are free. Also, came in really handy once in an argument over when they were charging me with removal of something from the mini bar which I did not take. I was actually surprised that they valued my frequent status as much as they did, considering I am not THAT frequent.

  • @MarkBH70

    MY ADVICE ON TRAVELING: LESS IS MORE! Don't see more than 2 countries--it will be a BLUR. Never went on a cruise but went to Spain and Portugal. Loved it and was glad to see both countries. However, I wish I only went to Portugal; that was my main interest. You see MORE when you only see ONE country at a time, one per trip! Multiple countries (in most situations) MEAN OFTEN YOU REALLY DON'T SEE ANY COUNTRIES WELL, SO NONE! There are exceptions.

      I agree and also less is more when packing too, it's very frustrating having to carry around a lot of unnecessary things. Better to choose carefully what you need and where exactly you want to go, and enjoy it fully.

      A cruise gives you a small sample of lots of places. My first trip was a cruise and I really wanted to see Italy but when It was over I found that I wanted to return for a longer visit to Spain and Malta.

    • @caseyvee4419
      @caseyvee4419 7 лет назад +2

      I generally agree. The most hilarious things are the European bus tours- 15 countries in 14 days!! Then the people come back and name any of the 15 countries and say "Yeah, been there, know ALL about XYZ country." when they spent 6 freakin' hours there! I kept going back to UK for 10 years until I had a total of 3 months there, over a month just in London, before I would say I know all about it! Where I agree with you a bit less is that you do not specify time- 2 countries won't be a blur if you spend 10 days in each on a 20 day vacation. Also, since this particular vid is about cruises, one thing which must be considered is that the ship is part of the destination. VERY few ships spend more than 2 days in a given port, so you will rarely see the port town really well if you are cruising, though some of the tiny islands can be seen even in one day. But I agree- don't try to cram 4 countries (or even 2) into a one week vacation, and you will be happier. Not to mention that you usually waste a day just in transition time (packing plus travel) when you go from one country to another.

  • @Sbsp54
    @Sbsp54 5 лет назад

    Adding onto packing /suitcase- I'd say if you can, take a carry-on suitcase instead. This way you don't have to wait on your suitcase. Also, it's a good way to have your luggage on you and prevent your suitcase from being misplaced. Now this won't always be the case but I had two different friends come across issues with their luggage. One never got their luggage until after the cruise when she was back in her home and she had to wear her boyfriends clothes the entire time during the cruise. And the other friend had her luggage misplaced but eventually got her things after a couple of days.

    Tip 1: ships generally use vacuum toilets, which are easily blocked. Do not flush sanitary products or too much toilet paper down the loo. If you have to use more than 2-3 sheets of toilet roll, use more than one flush.

    Tip #2 is so important. Some cruise companies are more geared towards a certain age group. In my experience, I went on two cruise trips as a teenager/early 20s. The first one was with Princess Cruises and the other was with Royal Caribbean. My on-board experience with Royal Caribbean was much better because the activities were geared towards my age group.

    This is a good video! I'd say looking at who the cruise caters for is important. If you're American, choose Carnival, Royal Caribbean, Norwegian or Disney. If you're British, P&O, Saga, Cunard, etc. You don't want to end up on a ship with 3000 people who don't speak your language and live a completely different lifestyle to you.

    Cola syrup (as in coca cola) is another seasick remedy. Personally as one who loves to cruise but could get seasick in a bathtub (seriously I can't even read a text in the car) I have tried everything , separately and all together, but only one remedy has ever worked. The time that I was in rough Caribbean waters that had most of the passengers running for their cabins I got drunk, or at least a little tipsy. This will relax you and turn down your body's balance response so much so that you unconsciously go-with-the-flow (or roll) like a seasoned sailor.

    My tip is that the ship isn't the only source for shore excursions. I went fishing from a kayak in Ketchikan, Alaska, and had more success than the people who went salmon fishing or bald eagle spotting. Mark's first tip is correct, but you have other options besides what the ship offers. Get back on time!

    You said that you prefer a cabin towards the stern. Why? Is it that you think those rooms are more stable (less sway) We chose a cabin as close to the bow as we could and loved it.
