The flower on the shirts is the poppy. People wear them in the UK in remembrance of people who died in wars. It was first started after ww1. Remembrance day is the 11th of November, and specifically at the 11th hour the guns fell silent to end the war. These days it also remembers everyone who died in all subsequent wars since.

Extra info on the lapel flowers, after all the bombs and shelling of the trench warfare in WW1 which turned the countryside to mud, when it was over, come the Spring, the craters and battlefields were all lined with poppies, the seeds of which had remained dormant until the soil was disturbed by the explosions
I believe the origin of the poppy was because of a battlefield that was left in tatters (ofc dead bodies, decomposition, rats etc etc) thru nature and people collecting the dead, turned into a nice meadow of these red poppy flowers, and they said there was one flower for each soldier lost, and from that day they were used as a remembrance, a gratitude and respect for our lost soldiers.

Haven't scrolled all comments, but I have seen at least one (with you responding) explaining a little about The Poppy, but just thought I'd add a little more. It's basically part of a more general commemoration like the US 'Veterans Day'. There is the day 11th Nov which can obviously fall on any day, and there's also the following Sunday (Remembrance Sunday). On both days many people, institutions and businesses promote an observance of two minutes silence at 11am, to remember the fallen... it was originally for the fallen of The Great War (as it was known then, now WWI). But now all Commonwealth soldiers in any conflict are honoured. 11 AM, on the 11th day of the 11th month of 1918 was when WWI officially ended. The Poppy symbolises the Flanders Fields on the Western Front, where many soldiers saw them as they fought and died during WWI. A paper and plastic facsimile of a poppy is given for a donation of any kind by the Royal British Legion which supports returning soldiers and the families of those fallen. They are typically worn throughout November, throughout the Commonwealth on the left lapel. The total military deaths (including disease etc) during WWI were possibly 10M. Civilian deaths were very possibly around the same. Many many cities, towns and villages throughout not only the UK, but also the commonwealth have memorials with commemorations listing the fallen. You are not surprised by a plaque in any business in the UK (old enough) to have a memorial to The Fallen. Many communities lost ALL of their men. Lest We Forget. I know it's not particularly funny. But not everything in life's funny!🤣🤔😢 TLDR The Poppy is deadly serious.

Have you seen Richard on Travel Man? It's a 24hrs in a weekend break type holiday show with a celebrity guest seeing the sights and experiencing local things. So 24hrs in Helsinki, or 24hrs in Paris, that sort of thing. He does one with Greg Davies in Moscow.

He did a travel show where he'd find a guest and spend 48 hours in some tourist spot. it was called Travel Man. I started keeping a list of great lines in it. One of my favorites was "If personal space isn't your thing, you might enjoy Barcelona. The Episode with Aisling Bea has them get into a fake argument that is equal parts cringe and hilarious. The one with Paul Rudd was great, and the John Hamm Episode was a classic. I've seen the suit he bought on that episode show up on clips of other shows.

To add to the multiple comments about the poppy pins, yes we wear them to remember those who have died in war but these days the main reason people (especially people on TV) wear them is because if you don't you will be violently attacked by social media, the press, and elderly members of the public
The first time I saw Richard was in Garth Marenghi's Darkplace and I loved it. Being American back in the day it was difficult to stay current with good British content. I think Adult Swim was where I caught most of the shows that I can now watch anytime on Y/T.

Hi Mandy, I think you would enjoy the I. T. Crowd, Richard has some great co-stars & they are all funny characters, but especially Richard`s. All of the cast where unknown to me when it aired, but I took a chance & watched it. I never regretted that choice, even the opening title screen is funny.
Not sure if you’ve been recommended it yet but if Sean Lock was one of/if not your favourites, then Johnny Vegas on The Last Leg is an absolute blast. It’s roughly a 4 minute clip of him cracking the show up. Vegas actually did a little sit-com a few years back called IDeal which you might like too.
That's a good idea, to write your own story, especially if you have no achievements, instead of waiting for other people to write your story for you. Wrong. It has been worn in Commonwealth states since 1919 to honour all those die in combat. It started following WWI. It is certainly not specific to WWII. Why comment if you don't know?
The poppy pins are to honour fallen soldiers. We do it every year on remembrance day.
Haven't scrolled all comments, but I have seen at least one (with you responding) explaining a little about The Poppy, but just thought I'd add a little more.
It's basically part of a more general commemoration like the US 'Veterans Day'. There is the day 11th Nov which can obviously fall on any day, and there's also the following Sunday (Remembrance Sunday). On both days many people, institutions and businesses promote an observance of two minutes silence at 11am, to remember the fallen... it was originally for the fallen of The Great War (as it was known then, now WWI). But now all Commonwealth soldiers in any conflict are honoured. 11 AM, on the 11th day of the 11th month of 1918 was when WWI officially ended.
The Poppy symbolises the Flanders Fields on the Western Front, where many soldiers saw them as they fought and died during WWI. A paper and plastic facsimile of a poppy is given for a donation of any kind by the Royal British Legion which supports returning soldiers and the families of those fallen. They are typically worn throughout November, throughout the Commonwealth on the left lapel.
The total military deaths (including disease etc) during WWI were possibly 10M. Civilian deaths were very possibly around the same. Many many cities, towns and villages throughout not only the UK, but also the commonwealth have memorials with commemorations listing the fallen. You are not surprised by a plaque in any business in the UK (old enough) to have a memorial to The Fallen. Many communities lost ALL of their men.

Have you seen Richard on Travel Man? It's a 24hrs in a weekend break type holiday show with a celebrity guest seeing the sights and experiencing local things. So 24hrs in Helsinki, or 24hrs in Paris, that sort of thing. He does one with Greg Davies in Moscow.
I have only seen two episodes, but it is a difficult one to get past copyright. Even in clips. Love the show though!

He did a travel show where he'd find a guest and spend 48 hours in some tourist spot. it was called Travel Man. I started keeping a list of great lines in it. One of my favorites was "If personal space isn't your thing, you might enjoy Barcelona.
The Episode with Aisling Bea has them get into a fake argument that is equal parts cringe and hilarious. The one with Paul Rudd was great, and the John Hamm Episode was a classic. I've seen the suit he bought on that episode show up on clips of other shows.

David is a famous children’s author. He is also a funny comedian and appears on panel shows like The Big Fat Quiz and 8oo10CdC.
They are wearing the poppy pin because it is close to Remembrance Day in the UK when he appears on Grahm Norton on 11th November every year to remember WW1 and one of the things that happen in the UK and Commonwealth nations. The rationale is that after WW1 they noticed many former battlefields were covered in poppies. It is interesting how most of his appearance are always around that time of year

Richard Ayoadeis outstandingly funny with dry witted humour. 47 with three children Sweedish mother and Nigerian father. Born in London and grew up in one of the roughest areas of London. Did Cambridge law degree but allways interested in theatre and performing drifted into full time and first big success was the IT Crowd. As other have said the red poppy is for the11th of November to mark the end of WW 1 and represent flowers that grew in no-mans land between the trenches. They were originally made and sold to raise funds for War widows and Orphans and injurned returneees now a standard and expected accessory specially in the media on the 11th.
He's half Norwegian , despite born in London he grew up in Ipswich(in a posh area) and went to private school, then went to a very posh college to do law in st Catherine's college in Cambridge😂😂

To add to the multiple comments about the poppy pins, yes we wear them to remember those who have died in war but these days the main reason people (especially people on TV) wear them is because if you don't you will be violently attacked by social media, the press, and elderly members of the public

The first time I saw Richard was in Garth Marenghi's Darkplace and I loved it. Being American back in the day it was difficult to stay current with good British content. I think Adult Swim was where I caught most of the shows that I can now watch anytime on Y/T.

Hi Mandy, I think you would enjoy the I. T. Crowd, Richard has some great co-stars & they are all funny characters, but especially Richard`s. All of the cast where unknown to me when it aired, but I took a chance & watched it. I never regretted that choice, even the opening title screen is funny.
Not sure if you’ve been recommended it yet but if Sean Lock was one of/if not your favourites, then Johnny Vegas on The Last Leg is an absolute blast. It’s roughly a 4 minute clip of him cracking the show up. Vegas actually did a little sit-com a few years back called IDeal which you might like too.

That's a good idea, to write your own story, especially if you have no achievements, instead of waiting for other people to write your story for you. And if there's no achievements, you could write it in such a way where either it looks like achievements, or in a way where people don't realize that there's no achievements. The book, in itself, winds up being one's achievement. In my case, I kind of already wrote my obituary for the same reason, and I might very well have 45 years left to live. Or, 55 years, from the moment I wrote it.
