I like how this guy thinks. No drastic lift. No drastic engine mods. Reasonably standard suspension. Standard comms. etc. No snorkel!!! Sensible driving and approach to safety!! It goes to show what can actually be achieved with a standardised approach. Being in Australia, I don't think I could bare to go back to my pre-air-conditioning days!! He is extremely well organised and his military training is an enormous benefit to the preparations. He isn't one of these weekend mountain goat cowboys. He actually represents the true spirit of the overlander. Thanks for sharing and would love to see you both do some overlanding together. Bring him on the Canning Stock Route ;-)
CAElite you think the prices are high in the UK?! I can only dream of owning a Defender here in the States. The going price for a 20 year old Defender 90 is often more than my annual salary. I have a Disco 2 that I love, and it cost me less than half what a Jeep would have. Folks here in Michigan wonder why I would want a temperamental British 4x4, but with some care and feeding it’s actually been quite a dependable vehicle.
Wow wow wow , I just watched this 3 part series what an interesting dood . A grab bag has never made more sense. Ide love to know what that military grade tyre puncture thingy is . Cheers Andrew awesome interview
Good lessons there. Safety and reliability are the top priority. I've been making my way through Mexico/Central America for the past 10 months and it's always the folks with heavily modified vehicles that I meet that have had more issues. Get a reliable vehicle, do some maintenance and get on the road!
ihmesekoilua Since we are currently traveling we can't edit more then we are. unfortunately one episode currently takes us 5-7 intensive days of editing. If we edit more then that we won't enjoy the trip. We did just buy a New computer and editing software (arrives with a guest today in Costa Rica! along with a telephoto lens and drone!!) and hope we won't experience anymore crashes, and can shorten how fast we produce an episode. Lots of love in each episode 😉 Thank you for tuning in!
4x4 Adventure Australia You don't have any content? We will maybe see you when you do. We subscribe to channels we enjoy or can lean something from. If you enjoy our channel I encourage you to subscribe, but if we are not your cup of tea then don't. A sub doesn't do much for us if you don't enjoy actually watching our videos.
Great job, I love this kind of interview learning how the drivers did it and how the vehicles were set up. I am curious as to why the electric fan was disconnected?
love the disco very neat bar work love the concept like the idea of no heavy bullbar not so good if u live an drive at night in Australia an the water part nothing gave me a greater challenge till I got older yes there is ways around an iv learnt to hate mud a lot .that would have been a great trip 11 days
Dude i currently own a disco II which i drive like a granny.I spend all my spare time underneath it fixing things haha.. im just having a laugh mate, land rover owners do it to themselves
Just goes to show you don't need to spend fortunes to cross a continent. I think I would of took a Toyota and kept the air though. Great to see this guy to this trip on a TV show.
In fact I don't get some modifications done on this truck. Why he disconnect the air condition? This is the best thing in hot countries. And do it need this roll cage ? It weights a tons. I would definitely add a snorkel and winch to it, it makes me more confident in 4wd expedition than the useless roll cage.
Mr. Mackenney, you have the best, most exhaustive and most informative bit of informaiton available regarding actually surviving an expedition across the world. But very ironically you forfot about the most important part....the vehicle to be driven. Why on earth would you drive a Land Rover or a Nissan across the world rather than a Land Cruiser. That is insane. Everyone on the planet knows that the Toyota Land Cruiser is the most reliable. Period. ???????
I had a left hand drive motorcycle I took to a RHD country. At that time they were more interested in hoof'n mouth, so I had to take some time in car wash confinement. The owners manual said I could tape over part of the headlight, but customs didn't say anything.
Scott Willmann Cooler yes, less restricted not really. Look how much more length a snorkel adds to the intake track. This engine is now working harder to pull the air that much further. The same way shortening or lengthening intake manifold runners changes the torque curve of an engine.
so, the coil spring was broken and you had to change from air to coils?? Where is the logic? Just get air springs without any electronics and pump them up with a simple valve plus take 1-2 spare air springs.

Nice interview. You didn't ask a bunch of questions you already knew the answers to, the way some interviewers do. Cheers from Florida!!
would love to see more on discovery 2s td5 such a good vehicle with a few mods!
These vids with Mac are the best, thanks Andrew.
So nice to see some disco 2 love!
Love listening to Macs stories! Great videos Andrew!
See, see?! A Discovery 2, not only breaking the record, but actually staying in one piece. Take THAT, Andrew St.Pierre White.
Wow sounds brilliant hopefully you can beat it again sometime
Fantastic your team must have been fantastic
What a great adventure
Cool video... I love my TD5 Disco 2, its used daily. :-)
Definitely a risker proposition in a td5 than a 300. Thanks for sharing 👍
Thank you, and Land Rovers are cool!
Bah, I am so tempted by a Disco 1 or 2. Would love a Defender 90 but the prices are just going absolutely insane here (in the UK)

That one is really great - more of that kind - please !

10 months? Well you need to start editing your videos, you're about five months behind, I just started watching them a week back :)

What a car!
Would be great to take a look inside!
really cool series, really enjoyed these videos
Like they say, your vehicle is most reliable in stock form.
video hase been up less than an hour and some Land rover hater already disliked hahaha
Awesome Rover!
Great job, I love this kind of interview learning how the drivers did it and how the vehicles were set up. I am curious as to why the electric fan was disconnected?
Forest Platt commenting because also curious, diesels are cold, but not that cold
Forest Platt Probably because in case of deep water the fan can break due to the strong fluid resistance.
Forest Platt Probably because in case of deep water the fan can break due to the strong fluid resistance.
Toyota has a limited slipper clutch on the fan. In case of deep water the clutch desengage the fan preventing damages
fgibin I know Jeepers that convert to electric fans just do they can install a switch to disable the fan during water crossings.
Good video. A nice reliable Disco 2 as well!
I like his approach. keep it simple
I went on that journey it was a great vehicle 👍🏻⚔️🇬🇧
What a guy. If you want to plan a trip anywhere, take Mac! Dr Rich
Great video, thanks👍🏻
It'd be nice to actually show the bits while he talks about them; the wheels, sleeping area, etc...
I was hoping to see their storage/sleeping solution. I am amazed you were able to get 6 footers comfortable back there to be honest.
Patrick Rich - I dont think it was comfortable but sure does the job. 😉
Nice job!👍🏻

Its appropriate because discos are good at breaking things!
Dude i currently own a disco II which i drive like a granny.I spend all my spare time underneath it fixing things haha.. im just having a laugh mate, land rover owners do it to themselves
Sounds like an awesome adventure. Too bad there's so much instability in the continent.
RUclips actually looks down on that.
Good to know Saudis are making people drive on the proper side of a vehicle.
do you know what brand of hosing did he use?
would be nice to see more of the vehicle instead of his face.
I thought the title meant you discovered something record breaking. Ha.
Top drawer .... content ..!!!!!!
Not gonna lie when he was talking about spares I thought he would say spare engine or spare hilux to tow it back
Just goes to show you don't need to spend fortunes to cross a continent. I think I would of took a Toyota and kept the air though. Great to see this guy to this trip on a TV show.
Which vehicle would you choose for this trip?
Beaten by a Disco 3 with air suspension
K.I.S.S at its finest
There is a company that puts 300 tdi's in disco 2s
Why would you want to do that the TD5 is a much better engine all round

Sounded like he knew his stuff until he said a snorkel increases fuel consumption and looses power 😐
Scott Willmann think he's got his tyre sizes mixed up a bit too.
Was just thinking the same thing. I can't see how cool, fresh air could be a bad thing.
Scott Willmann snorkels do kill power and increase fuel consumption.
Southern Nevada offroading and back country you are kidding mate, so cooler, less restricted air flow decreases power?
Scott Willmann Cooler yes, less restricted not really. Look how much more length a snorkel adds to the intake track. This engine is now working harder to pull the air that much further. The same way shortening or lengthening intake manifold runners changes the torque curve of an engine.
Mac who ???
I weed win his sleeping bag

i dont get it, why rush through all those miles and countries, and experience nothing, what a waste of an overland trip.
William McLaughlan It wasent an overland trip, it was a record attempt. No different to racing to the north pole.
Get a Land Cruiser!
