Never forget the first time I saw Benny Hill. Had a very bad day at school one day in 1980. That night, Benny Hill came on and I laughed and laughed. Healed some wounds. Miss the late, great Benny Hill!

The man was a Genius! Not many people realise he set up UK humour! The Two Ronnies basically took all his work, and made into their own, and got more famous! People slated Benny Hill for being "sexist" and "exploiting" women, but it was all in line with the times, and all in good humour! He was a master of comedy, and beats any of the crap we have today in 2022!

@@colindavid2078 Yeah - now we have men and women trying to outdo each other in which can make more jokes about their genitals or what sex they like to have or who with or who can be the most vulgar. No thought, no consideration, no talent required. Oh yeah, Benny Hill was just AWFUL...*eyeroll* The people who were against Benny Hill didn't know how good they had it, and that you can believe.

Benny was the "baseline" for all comedy around that era! The two Ronnies "stole" his ideas, and made them into their own he was THAT good! Don't get me wrong, I loved the two Ronnies, but half their material came from Benny Hill! ITV/Thames Television made millions from Benny's show, and then ditched him in a flash..... which lead to Benny's depression and, eventually his death in my opinion! I was born in 1984 myself, and aged 38 now, I appreciate Benny hill over many other comedians. Also loved Freddie Starr, another naturally born entertainer and unique in his act! RIP Benny & Freddie!

Film critics with an eye toward history always seem to say that the silent comedy era of the 1910s and 1920s produced three legitimate geniuses: in no particular order, Chaplin, Keaton, Lloyd. I believe if Benny Hill had been born 30 years earlier, there would have been an acknowledged fourth one. His no-dialogue sketches are clearly informed by the best of silent comedy, and they are screamingly funny. (Of course he wouldn't have had the leeway in the 1920s to be as raunchy as he was but so what?) His sketches with dialogue are great but I will argue that Benny is at his best when doing his own brand of "silent comedy."

I can laugh because (a) it's a clever play on words and (b) I'm intelligent enough to realize that's what it is, and NOT an attempt to laugh at rapists or the crime of rape. That's the difference between people that can laugh at it and people, apparently, like yourself.

I haven't seen this since I was very very young. The Benny Hill Show was on PBS (Public Broadcast Service) in the 1970's here in Southeastern Wisconsin and I've had to really dig deep to find it since then. I remember my mother absolutely HATED Benny Hill. My dad would watch it and laugh and laugh and laugh while my mom complained loudly about what a creepy old man Benny Hill was. Even today I'm still like "mom, it's just a joke character" and that quiets her down a little for a few minutes.

1:19 I'm guessing SNL was inspired by this scene.

It just struck me that at the end of a Formula 1 race they play Carmen while spraying Champagne. They should play Yakkity Sax at the chaotic starts.

Are shows like this still being made in the UK? I know this could never exist today in the U.S.

1:51 I believe that the Jane listed here is Jane Leeves that later went on to TV shows in the US like Frasier...

No, it's Jane Eve (a.k.a. Jane Colthorpe a.k.a. Jane Newman), who was one of the four dancers in Love Machine. ("Libby" was Libby Roberts who, after 1984, became Hill's Angels' choreographer - and would drive them away from the Playboy / Penthouse style material that was dominant until then, and transform them into a more conventional dance troupe.) This show was from 1976. Ms. Leeves' Hill appearances were 1983.
