When you do a spline, do you feel like you are doing a customer a favor? Because, I feel like splines are one of those jobs you make like $2 an hour between cleaning the crack, finding the right piece of wood, making sure runout is the same and medullary rays look the same. Then there is the finish and the priceless look on the customers face when you give them an estimate lol.
I just dial back my expectations if they aren't paying for A game. I think there is room for a functional spline that maybe isnt perfect looking from all angles etc.

I agree. When making furniture, if a seasoned board is warped, it must be planed 4 square to be useable. You cannot force the board straight.
