      He's talking rubbish and presenting a very distorted pro Russian version of recent history. This is Putin's long term plan. It has not been caused by NATO or the Ukraine.

      @@robertstorey7476 There may well be a valid argument from the Russian side, however invading Ukraine is not going to get anyone to listen to it. The 'expansion of NATO' argument no longer rings true in light of the invasion as Putin is by definition moving his forces closer, not the other way round.

      I'm pretty sure western governments just spin a wheel to decide which doomsday disaster they will terrorise the world with next. We've already had impending environmental collapse, a pandemic and those pesky Russians, maybe we're due a flying saucer invasion sometime soon.

Since turned to terrestrial channel 133, notably, RT, yesterday; to find words to the effect of 'service not available'. Also a purge of 'non Russian' news channels appears to have occurred at the same time; in this instance, US indigenous Trunews removed from TuneIn Radio app-there may well be others-many others.

    The Ukraine should be a neutral buffer state and should not be enticed into the EU and NATO. Nor should it be aligned with Russia. The Ukraine should trade with the whole world, attract foreign investment and fight its own endemic corruption.

    Peter always talks absolute sense and reason. His knowledge of these matters is second to none. He is of high principle and values. He is so right about the UK Governments over estimation of itself.

      He has values but they are quite estranged from the real human struggle. I've never seen him smile or express genuine understanding towards us proletariat's lol, he often condemns groups such as poor abused women who seek alternatives to continuing on with birth and pregnancy or those far removed from the 1 percent, who make un-educated but innocent decisions that trap them in poverty and degradation. I couldn't imagine him living amongst socially housed citizens experiencing the constraints of disability, lack of access to social resources and living completely and utterly alone, with him then having any personal feelings of emotional warmth and understanding.

    Anyone from the generation who lived through the height of the Cold War knows that the face-off was between NATO and the Warsaw Pact. After 1990 the WP ceased to exist but NATO not only continued, but increased its membership. So, then we have the military might of NATO against one country - Russia. Not only that, but they prospect a country on Russia's border and Putin, rightly, would expect NATO to move military hardware in. Now the foolish Western foreign policy is to provide weaponry to Ukraine, when that was the source of the problem in the first place. The jokes are writing themselves.

    I remember looking on in shock when Russian speakers in Ukraine were told that they could no longer use their own language anymore. All Russian language newspapers were banned and TV stations taken off the air. The west said nothing.

      But while I might disagree with him on drug policy or gay marriage, Hitchens is decent, honest and one of the very few informed and sane commentators on foreign affairs. He doesn't just repeat official talking points. He spent many years in Russia, reporting admirably on the decline of the USSR and the Yeltsin era. I believe he'll be proved largely right about Corona too when all the facts have come out.

But - to add a hopeful note - you may want to check out John Mearsheimer, 2015, about the Ukraine being lead down the primrose path by the West and in the end being crushed. He also said that Russia had accepted both the 1999 and 2004 NATO expansion - but that Russia said from 2006 onward that the integration of both Georgia and Ukraine was unacceptable.

    Medvedev has stated with some finality that Russia has 'closed the book on cooperation with the West'. They have basically said the last 30 years of trying are finished and, from now on, they will prioritise other alliances. I don't blame them quite frankly. The West are incapable of facing up to their own evil and all the self-righteous posturing of the USA has made half the world heartily sick of all things American.

    The more I listen to this man the more I come to the conclusion that he may well have been the better of the two Hitchens(RIP Christopher) and that is saying a whole lot. I really liked Christopher but I found his militant atheism a little problematic even though I am agnostic myself(and no agnosticism and atheism are not the same thing). Peter has been spot on, on virtually every issue for the last 7 years that I have been following him. How lucky we are that Mrs Hitchens gave us not only one but two great men and when god decided to take one from us we still had the other.
