I learned to drive a tractor on a G6 Moline in about 1965 when I was 14 yrs old. It was a big (for it’s day) tractor and very basic. No frills, not even a tach. Didn’t really need a tach. I think wide open was about 1800 rpms. We had 2 of them and they ran for years with little problem. I also started working for a Moline dealer not long after that. The biggest issue we had after White took them over was getting parts. Up until then they were good solid tractors.

We used G-1000 in the 60's in PA and pulled 7 oliver plows. We plowed a thousand acres per year with that old girl. We had some trouble with rear, clutch slipped always. The torque was amazing, when the throttle was open something was going to give but not the motor.

Man that sounds good! We still use old Molines on our farm out here in Oregon. We run a 1965 M670 and a 1967 M670 super, both diesels. Our primary loader tractor is a Jetstar 3 and we still run a 1950 U around. Our big Moline's are down for the count currently with our G1355 having broke the shift forks, our G1000 with a blown rear tire and low oil pressure and our G706 with a tired engine and a worn out clutch. So in their place we run a couple White 2-155s and a 2-135.

Hope you get your Molines going. I love seeing the old classic tractors still doing real work. My son keeps telling me that I should sell my old tractors and buy newer ones. I don't think so as long as I can get parts for them and keep them running. I'll keep working them.

Just disking. I usually drove the 1900 Oliver with FWA pulling either a disk or field cultivator. The farm was sold years ago. Now I think my brother only has the Vista G-1000.

Our neighbour told us years later he couldn’t figure out how we got the tractor to drive itself, he had to get close to see this little kid sitting on the seat. Pulled a 16ft discer, all I had to do was turn left, round n round. It had a hand clutch, I could pull it out ok, but couldn’t push it back in by hand, I had to put both feet on the clutch sitting on the seat and push till it clicked in. Those were the days…..

Why did he put a turbo on a D585 engine, I thought the 585 engine had too lightweight camshaft bearings and piston rings, and therefore should not be turbocharged or run at full 2200rpms for long periods or else those components will not last long and fail fast. These small yet serious design flaws are a limiting performance and use factor that you must be aware of in order to not cause very excessive premature wear. Supposedly, these components still present these problems of being too lightweight and not heavy duty enough even after the engine is broke in or bored slightly over factory specs to avoid the locking up and blowing up caused by too low factory piston clearance that must be addressed by again, braking the engine in through short light use before doing any long or heavy usage, or boring over the factory specs before running at all. If this information is accurate, only a fool or very uninformed person would risk turbocharging a D585 unless you have the money to blow when those lighter weight components fail very prematurely and frequently from very premature excessive wear because of your abuse despite awareness of design problems. Anyone owning a 585 engine should be made fully aware of this and take appropriate steps when using to avoid causing premature excessive wear that will require overhauling. This includes running below 2200rpms whenever possible and not running at full 2200rpms for long periods. 2000rpms is probably in the safe zone. Turbocharging should not be done at all if this information is accurate unless you have the money to blow from your improper usage knowing these design problems limit the engine and therefore is engine abuse and not rated for turbocharging or running long periods at 2200rpms if you expect long engine life. Running the engine at full 2200rpms for long periods or turbocharging would be abuse and cause very premature excessive engine wear requiring very premature frequent overhauls. IF ANY OF THIS INFORMATION IS AT ALL INNACURATE, PLEASE STATE SO TO INFORM WHAT IS OR IS NOT ACCEPTABLE! No one has ever clarified if these bearing and piston ring problems are only present before the engine is broke in or even after let alone if running at full 2200rpms for long periods or turbocharging after brake in still presents the premature wear with piston rings and bearings. If I knew what info was accurate, I would turbocharge a 585 myself but the info is too gray and muddy, and i am not taking a risk that might cause very premature excessive engine wear and overhauling. Someone needs to clarify what info here is accurate so i know weather i can turbocharge the engine myself? But from what ive researched, it is a no go and a bad idea for long engine life, and it is also a bad idea to run at full 2200rpms for long periods even after the brake in period!!!! Its like trying to push components in an engine at 2500rpm when they where originally rated for only 2200rpms. With Moline it was 1800rpms that they pushed to 2200rpms without upgrading the components for the heavier job because they got away with it before when going from 1600 to 1800rpms. 2000rpms is probably the max limit before those components start wearing excessively as has been somewhat documented by owners of the engine, but by the time they found out it was too late, and so many were re-powered with different brand engines. Supposedly these design flaws at 2200rpm were not remedied by simply getting past the brake in period damage free. The components mentioned were simply too lightweight for full 2200rpms for long periods. If this is accurate, you should try to only run at a max of 2000rpms for long periods to be safe so the engine lasts a very long time like it was supposed to. Any clarification on the accuracy of this info would be much appreciated!

Why farm using old equipment nowadays? Is it a matter of cost for equipment or are some farmers more "traditional" when it comes to farming?

It’s a matter of family tractors bought new. This farm runs modern AGCO brand tractors but likes to work a few acres with the classics each year.

Interesting to see this: the concentration / mind on the job when working in difficult conditions. Could ( still can't fully ) understand WHY US farmers used drag plows on these large tractors instead of the Semi-integral ones for better Draft control.
BTP: Have you any videos which actually demonstrate the common / everyday usage of Ford's LOAD-Monitor system and maybe comparisons with , say, Deere's Lower-Link and Massey's TOP-Link sensing for those larger semi-integral plows ? Cheers and thaks for posting.

I always liked pulling a drawbar plow , always seem to do a more uniform job . Also with the drawbar plow there was no adjusting the tractor tire to the furrow and a dual tire on only 1 side .
We went from 5 bottom 3 pt hitch to 7 bottom drawbar plows mainly because we went to larger 4wd tractors .

There was another advantage of drawbar plows. We used to farm with 2 row equipment using a Ford 3000 tractor and a disk on heavy clay soil. When we broke ground, the disk connected to the liftarms would pull the tractor sideways and we would have to fight the steering wheel and ride brakes to keep it straight. With a larger tractor and a drawbar disk, we had a lot smoother ride. With a drawbar ploy, you have one center attachment point with even pull.

I would very much like to do a tractor comparison. Unfortunately in the age of no till and min till it’s hard to get a chance to find these classic tractors plowing. If each one turns up to film I sure will do a comparison video.

@@bigtractorpower thanks for the video. These remind me of my farming days as a teenager. I learned to drive on a 1972 Ford 3000, and we got a 1978 JD 2840 later followed by a used MF 1155 when we started farming more land. Our neighbors had Farmall Super C H and M, IH 806 856 1066 1466, Ford 8N 5000 6600, and Deere 4020 4630 and 8000 4WDs.

    farmer not doing so well?

If you mean is he not doing so well because he’s using old equipment? He could probably buy and sell “modern” farmers who give a quarter million for the latest computer driven tractors. He can’t cover 5000 acres with his lineup nor does he need to to make a living. To each his own.

Just enjoying a tractor his grandfather bought new. This farm has modern AGCO tractors but enjoys running some acres with the classics.

It seems like Oliver made some fairly popular plows. They tend to show up often.

Oliver/WFE and International built popular plows in the 60’s, 70’s and 80’s.
