    Re: the eruv--they missed one crucial part of the explanation. The "dental floss" (or string, or wire, or whatever is being used as part of the eruv per the Jewish law that outlines how an eruv should be built), creates "a domain, in which you can carry." For example, if your property is not enclosed, some very observant people will put up an eruv around their own property (if there is not one in their town). This allows one to not only carry (such as one's tallis bag--prayer shawl bag--to shul in the morning, or to also push a stroller--very important for woman who want to leave the house on shabbat. Or to bring a gift to your lunch hosts. Or even for the kids to play basketball in their backyard. Because one has "created a domain" that extends beyond their own home, but now also includes the neighborhood, they are very important to have in any Jewish community so that people can not only attend synagogue in the morning, but can socialize on shabbat as well!
