Thanks for the comparative review, very interesting, it bears out what I initially thought. I ordered an NA-701 a few days ago before I read your review. I felt the NA-771 was just too long for general use but the NA-701 would have some useful gain over the short supplied 'rubber duck' antenna. Your review confirms this. Thanks once again, Mike.
I have just received a 771 and tested it out whilst playing woodland airsoft. I used the 701 before, and the furthest it got was 1/2 a MILE! The 771 was a very good improvement. I do suggest getting the 771 because it's simply much better!
@@shockadellick if your stock antenna is performing better than the NA-701 , than you definately have a fake Nagoya.... I have the FT 60 also and my NA- 701, I bought from a reliable source, is performing twice as good as the stock.... there is no Antenna, that is copyed as much as the Nagoya.
They are both great. I bought both since they are cheap. Its obvious the length of the 771 would perform a bit better. I use the 701 for portability and the 771 for performance like my daily ham radio walk around the neighborhood or laying on the couch.
I have a small scanner (IC R6) and want to listen to marine frequencies (about 156MHz) and think I'll try and get a better antenna. the Nagoya 771 is always mentioned as a good buy. Would this be good for my situation, or perhaps a magnetic one I could stick on top of my car, when i am near the local harbour. Trouble is, I don't really know enough to decide what is a good one.

Good review! Even though the NA-771 is pretty long (mind you, Diamond RH901S is even longer, by about 8cm) I got used to it pretty quickly. I no longer use the stock antenna - don't find any use for it.
Good review ! I have an Icom IC-R5 with the original antenna, but I am now after a better antenna, perhaps one I could even use with a magnetic mount when I am in the car. I think the NA771 would fit the job, but was wondering whether a suitable magnetic mount is available ... what do you think ? I think my scanner would need a female connection
Thanks for the comparison. That is the exact choice I had to make here in Oklahoma. Did you say how far the tower was from your location? Thanks again.
Hi ! Very nice teste ! I have a noob question,.. does the NA-771 (140/430mhz) work on the PMR (446mhz) frequencies ? Is it possible to cut the antena to match the correct lenght for the 446 ? Is it worth it ? Thank you very much !
Do you find the NA666 difficult to fit onto Baofeng UV5R radios as the gap is quite big? The male version is fine but the female version has the thread end that sticks out too much.

HandyRadio It appears that it might be hard to find a genuine Nagoya antenna, too. I was under the impression that the Nagoya trade name, etc., on the base of their antennas is supposed to be silk screened in silver, rather than blue and that those with that writing done in blue were fraudulent. I bought a Nagoya 771 advertised as genuine with photos of a genuine one in the ad. What I received was, I believe, a fake. Works okay on 2m but SWR on 70cm is off the charts. Seller didn't want the fake one back but did refund my money. I'm trying again.regarding the order of a genuine one. Should be on my doorstep Wednesday. It would be pretty easy for me to get a real Diamond antenna here in the U.S.A. by simply ordering one from Ham Radio Outlet.com. I believe they ship to the U.K. ;). If you buy a Diamond or Comet antenna from them, it's the "real deal." 73 KC6TIF
Jerrold Shelton It's not that hard. I got mine off of Amazon. Just choose the right seller, and it should be fulfilled by Amazon. The Nagoya 771 with blue writing is the legitimate one. I just got myself a Diamond for my new Yaesu VX6R HT. If you do decide to get a Diamond, get it from The Antenna Farm. Their price including shipping is much lower, and they are great.
macuser1232 I got my fake one off of Amazon. I thought I had chosen the right seller, because the images in the product description gave me every impression that I was going to get something that looked like the product as depicted on the manufacturer's website. The seller was "Two-way radio Wholesale" and it was fulfilled by Amazon. They even had photos of the correct chartreuse back slip case the things are supposed to be packaged in now. As to the NA-771 with the blue silk screen being the legit ones, riddle me this: If the Nagoya NA-771 with the blue writing is really the legit one, why is it that the NA-771's depicted on the Reuex Co., LTD website have silver writing on a loading coil housing that has a bullet-shaped ogive rather than a pronounced step-down from cylinder to truncated cone form? Why is it that "Two way radio Wholesaler" used images of an an antenna in their product description that make the product look exactly like it appears on the manufacturer's website -with silver silk screen on a bullet-shaped loading coil housing, to illustrate what they claimed to be a genuine Nagoya antenna? Why is it that blue silk screen is kind of conspicuous by it's absence on any antenna depicted on the Reuex website if blue silk screen is an indicator of authenticity? I suspect that blue silk screen isn't a guarantee of authenticity, and that the converse is true. I initiated a refund claim with Amazon. Very early in that process, the service rep assisting me made it clear that no matter what the outcome was going to be, I wasn't going to have to trouble myself with sending the item back and the rep made it crystal clear that Amazon didn't want it returned. Amazon's rep stated that exchange wasn't an option because "the seller is one of those mainland China outfits whose product mix changes constantly" so they cheerfully refunded my $9.99. I tried again, ordering one through Amazon again, but this time it was "Sold by BaoFeng Tech / Fulfilled by Amaxon." Baofeng Tech USA is located in South Dakota, here in the U.S.A. On their website, they list the Nagoya NA-771 and the photos they show depict the product as the manufacturer's do, sans blue silk screen writing on the loading coil housing.. They go on to claim that they're the best vendor to use to insure you get a genuine NA-771. They go even further, claiming that those with blue silk screen are fakes and that there is a difference in quality between them and the real thing that you can easily see. That Baofeng Tech-sourced NA-771 arrived yesterday evening. I came home from work to install it on my Baofeng GT-3 and I took it back to the office with me, as I was working late and wanted to try to check in to our club's weekly net on our 2 m machine. I tried that last week and couldn't open the repeater with the fake NA-771 or the Sainsonic-branded stock antenna. My office is just a few miles from the repeater tower, but it's former bank, built as a bi-level, with my office being in the downstairs that's built into a hill and making matters worse, it's basically the vault I'm working in. And it still works. As a vault. In spite of this, I could "kerchunk" the repeater and open it. When the net commenced, the net controller said I was full quiet on his end. That's a big improvement over not being able to open the repeater. I had some stuff to tend to at a field office before calling it a night. That office is almost exactly 20 miles as the bird flies from our club's repeaters. I couldn't open the 70 cm machine from the parking lot there previously, but I can now. I wound up having a short QSO with another "full quiet on my end" report from the other station. My fake NA-771 was pretty close to useless as a 70 cm antenna.. This one works pretty darn well -and I was especially impressed because our local conditions last night weren't exactly conducive for trying to DX one's way in to VHF or UHF repeaters on 4 watts of mighty HT transmitter power. I like Diamond products and tended to favor their HT antennas in the past. I still do, but I don't think a Diamond is going to do much more for me than my Nagoya NA-771 seems to be doing, I'm more than a little impressed that I was able to QSO via our club's 70 cm repeater on 4 watts from a distance of 20 miles. I'll definitely keep that Antenna Farm place in mind the next time I'm in the market for a Diamond antenna, though. 73 KC6TIF
Jerrold Shelton Hie Jerrold, I too purchased the Nagoya NA-771 from Amazon as well. My antenna has silver writing on the "bullet shaped" loaded coil. I read your reply concerning the refund, the NA-771 with blue silk screening, and performance issues however --I got lost in the reply as it was a lengthy one --but I'm falling asleep to be honest. Which antenna did you have luck with? I'll re read your paragraph, tomorrow's another day. Which one is the real deal? I just got it with a Baofeng UV-82L. I want to mention that the HT and the NA- 771 were both shipped together in a single box, yet I was charged separate shipping for each, as if it were 2 separate orders -unless that's a 'handling fee' and their policy. It took 12 days to arrive to my home. I read in the article prior to placing the order -that the legitimate NA- 771 comes with a small QC sheet inside the orange sleeve packaging. My 771 indeed came with that QC slip. What do you think Jerrold? I bought this radio as it was something I couldn't pass up for the price, and turns out to be a decent radio but also as incentive to get my ticket. Lets see how long these micro switches last without a rotary channel knob. I believe that issue alone has everything to do with the crazy cheap price but still well worth it. I got my UV- 82L with the spkr/mic., the cable & cd & earpiece for $45. I'm not complaining, but the antenna has me wondering. Thanks, Jeff
Those are fake nock off antennas. The SWR's are probably very high. Real nagoyas have silver writing, come with a spacer, and have a much more gradual distally tapered base. Their website has instructions for identifying a fake, and there are videos on RUclips also.

But for real usage it makes no measurable difference. Try Diamond rh-519/comet sma503 or even 701 tested above and you won't be disappointed.
