You're not the only one, this series was my childhood and they always bothered me how they treated Freddy, I mean, he takes care of everyone and gives them advice. He is the only character who acts with common sense.
I always wondered why Freddy was the one who had to take charge and not puppet or golden Freddy if they complain so much. I think this series focuses too much on ships and not on character development.
