- When I did my Thruhike of the PCT in 2020, I was unable to record the beauty of the Sierra because of an inoperable camera. I retraced my steps in order to record my hike and the stunning beauty which is the Sierra Nevada. This video chronicles my journey up Bishop Pass, over Muir Pass and Selden Pass to Vermillion Valley Resort.
7,195 ft. elevation gain
Passes:
Bishop Pass - 11, 972 ft.
Muir Pass - 11,970 ft.
Selden Pass - 10,913 ft.

It's like walking through an Ansel Adams photo book.
You’re right Eric. One the most beautiful sections in all the Sierra.
You're living the dream at retirement age. I'm 74 and your a great inspiration for me. LORD GOD Almighty bless your heart. (keep it coming)
Thank you Albert. You’re very kind. As long as I can, I will. 😁❤️👍
Beautiful scenery, beautiful music and great commentary. You’re a great tour guide as well as a great hiker.

After all, PCT is beautiful. I admire your courage. And I wish you good health until you finish.
Thank you very much.
oh my. i am always amazed when i see the sierras up top. does not look real. i have not done that part of the PCT. i'm 66. maybe i'll give it a try but take it easy. maybe 8 miles a day. thanks for taking me along and so glad you got your health back!
Thank you Cheryl. Yes I had to take my time. But the Sierra is so beautiful.
Great to see you back on the trails again.
Thanks Peter. It was a great trip.
Thanks Rev. I leave tomorrow for the JMT. I’m 63 You have given me confidence to attempt this. You da bomb. Trudge.
Thanks Trudge. You’re going to have a great time! Don’t try to keep up with the young’ns. Just hike your hike. 👍
Thanks for sharing that! So beautiful! I watched all of your thru hike in 2020, so I'm glad you added this part!
Thanks Kim. I was going to do this hike and record it last year but a heart attack threw a monkey wrench in all my hiking plans.
Another great video. Such beauty. Looked like a tough one - thanks for sharing.
Thanks Bob. It was a tough one. Alpine Passes and steep elevation gains.
Thank you for the wonderful video! And reliving my 2018 JMT!
Thanks. I’m glad you enjoyed it.
Great video. Glad you rehiked and got to recording this section. Blessings and safe hiking.
Thanks Vickie. Yes, I flew through the Sierra on my Thruhike. This time it took me longer because I was filming.
Great to follow you on trail again, I’ve missed you! Wonderful video as always…. Take care
Thanks Betty.

Thanks Merak. I’ll try.😁👍❤️
Hi Rev, I'm just checking in.
sending you prayers and well wishes.
Thanks Steph. You’re so kind.
Gosh, this is beautiful!
Thanks Annie. The Sierra is a beautiful section of the PCT. 😁❤️👍
Outstanding video! Very entertaining- had to laugh when you tried to sip thru your mosquito net. Sure looked grueling hiking up those passes- you should feel proud- what an accomplishment!! Loved the music, footage and clarity. I need to upgrade to the 12 phone.
Thanks. I’m so glad you enjoyed it.
Beautiful Scenery! You are an inspiration to those of us older hikers.
Thanks Elaine
Great video, i am jalours about your landscape, so beautyful !!
Hey Max. Thanks. It is so beautiful.
Thank you so much for your incredible filming and beautiful music. And for your humor that made me smile or laugh out loud. Wishing you wellness.

Gorgeous!
Thanks Suzanne.
So inspiring brother.
Thanks Lee.
Rev, tomorrow's the big day - well I'm closer to it since I'm around 8 or so hours ahead of you, but
know that I'll be thinking of you and your family.
Prayers and good thoughts to you, your surgeon and his team.
You'll be back in no time... 😊 Doing what you do best - hiking and sharing your experiences with us.
All the best, and lots of well wishes from South Africa.
Steph.
Thanks Steph you’re very kind.
Excellent!
Thanks Rodney.
Hello Rev! I so enjoy your videos. They have been very informative and helpful. Questions I have that I don't know if you've answered in your other videos ----How do you purify your water and all water on the trail needs to be purified? And I think you mentioned Deet for the mosquitos in the past. Bodily "functions" so far from water sources and campground and toilet paper? Ever use hiking sandals? What about sunscreen and a very wide-brimmed hat---pros or cons? Extra battery supplies to carry with you to run your GPS, etc.? Do you ever use two hiking poles? If you don't have time to address all that, I'll understand. Happy hiking!
Rev, sorry that a broken camera forced you to return to this hellscape Fortunately your camera captured the essence of the place so mission accomplished. You will never have to face the dangerous mosquitos and weather of this trail segment again!
Thanks Paul. The Sierra has to be the toughest section on the PCT.
Best wishes on your way Sir
Thanks Clyde.
Great to see you on the trail! My Dad and I did the John Muir Trail in 1979. I love seeing that part of it. It brings back those memories. Thanks Rev.
You’re welcome Brian. It’s a beautiful trail and a beautiful part of the Sierra.
Beautiful❣️Love this area. I did the JMT in 2014. Your video brought back precious memories ❣️🥾⛰🏕
Thanks Diana. I’m glad you enjoyed it.
So inspirational Rev! Always great to see you out om the trail. The bottle to the net clip made me snicker out loud - who hasn't been there? 😅 Thank you revisiting the PCT for all us to enjoy with you!
Thanks. I’m so glad you enjoyed it. Especially me trying to drink through a mosquito net. 😂
Thank you for retracing your steps despite the difficulty! This is my favorite part of the Sierra and I really missed not seeing in in your first trek.
Thanks Michael. Yeah, it left a big gap in my 2020 PCT Thruhike video séries.
Superb video! I’ve hiked from Florence Lake and over Selden Pass to VVR, but always wondered what it was like to do a trans-Sierra hike. Going to be 70 years old soon and I need to get going! Thanks for the inspiration!
You’re welcome Curtis. I have to admit, it was pretty strenuous. Toughest section on the PCT.
Beautiful video photography! The colors really are spectacular! That I Phone twelve takes amazing videos!
Thanks. Yes it does Larry. I love my iPhone 12.
Breathtaking views. Great camera work Rev
Thank you very much.
Prayers for a great result and you’ll be back on the Trail soon!
Thanks Mike.
Good to see you out and about Rev did you bring along your Guardian Angel on the hike?
Thanks Mark. Yes I did.
This is definitely a beautiful section but Rev, you had to work for it, that's for sure. That was a storm and a half. How long ago was this filmed as I thought the snow would have gone but it was still better than post holing all the time. Thanks for the upload, really appreciate it. Just seen the answer below. Amazing there was still snow.
It was definitely a tough section of the sierra, Chris. There was some snow. Just patches.
Excellent and well done, Sir!
Thank you.
Awesome!
Thanks Douglas.
Hi Rev! Do you have a date yet for the AAA surgery? I'd like to send you good thoughts and a prayer or two on that day.
Thank you for the great videos. You're the best!
Thanks Steph. My Endovascular Aneurysm Repair (EVAR) will be on August 18.
Beautiful scenery. The video quality has improved significantly. What camera are you using now?
Thanks Daniel. I’m using my iPhone 12 pro.
I was thinking the same….the quality does seems even better than previously
Rev, as always, enjoy your video very much. thanks. Question: Do you need permit for this hike?
Thanks. Yes anytime you hike in the Sierra you need a permit. And, by the way, I was checked twice by two different Rangers.
Rev, as usual stellar content. I was curious as to the beverage you were drinking out of your Smart Water bottle. It was dark colored obviously not just water, wondered what it was. Thanks and hike on.👍
Thanks Claude. Two packets of Starbucks Via coffee in 750 ml of water. Shaken, not stirred. 😂
Hi Rev. You’ve probably said somewhere, but when you did the entire trail, how long did you take? Your videos have planted the seed of the dream to one day walk the pct, once my son heads off to uni. Greetings from the UK. Ed
Hey Ed. I would highly recommend hiking the PCT. In 2020 there were many Europeans, who were hiking the trail. It took me 163 days, nearly 5 1/2 months to hike the PCT. I started on April 15 and arrived at the northern terminus on September 28.
wait a minute, what is the situation with the AAA?????
I have my EVAR (Endovascular Aneurysm Repair) scheduled for August 18.
Hey Rev...looks like you are using the Plex Solo if I'm not mistaken (think I recall a video where you were going to make that switch). Thoughts on it including vestibule size, interior storage since it only has one pocket, and anything else? Really enjoy your videos. Thanks!
Yes. I’m using the Plex Solo. I need to do a follow up review. But so far I love it. Perfect for a single, ultralight hiker.
Beautiful video! :)
Are you shooting in 4K 30fps and "just" with the camera-app coming with the iphone or using a third party app?
Thanks in advance & greetings from Germany! :)
Thanks Marcus. 1080p, 60fps, edited with iMovie.
Love your videos Rev. Thanks. Question if I may please? I have been denied PCT permit from Campo to Kennedy Meadows twice, recently. I believe the reason is that past a particular date - PCTA believes that it is too hot to embark from the southern terminus due to the heat and are not recommending or approving any permits in May thru Summer. Should I select a NotCal sector. I dont want to do the Sierra due to the snow.
Great question Stephanie. Hiking the PCT anywhere from Campo to Kennedy Meadows South after April is going to be brutal. I was in the Mojave just past Walker Pass one day in the summer and it was 114 degrees plus no natural water sources!
This year, I would try Donner Pass, northward. You’re still going to run into snow but not as much. Hope this helped.
@@TheHikingRev Rev, yes. Very helpful. Thanks.
Great video. When was this filmed? It released in August 2022, but it looks a bit wet for that date.
Thanks. I did this section from July 12 through July 18, 2022.
You had the EVAR today. With all the prayers I have no doubt that you already have your hiking shoes on and tied. When will Mrs. Rev agree to the next walk in the mountains?
Thanks Forrest. Ha ha! Mrs. Rev says I’ve got to be patient so it’ll probably be next week😂. The surgery went well. I have four stents in my body (three in my Right Coronary Artery and now one in my Aorta). Hopefully that’ll take care of me for now. I’m hoping to do some big hikes next year…unless something else breaks.
@@TheHikingRev Looks to me like you and your medical team are addressing these issues before they break. That aneurysm had me concerned given that it's like a baloon that can burst but you are one tough Rev. Congratulations!! Praise God.
@@forrestbond7667 Yeah…I felt like a ticking time bomb.
@@TheHikingRev Good to hear that the surgery went well! - I am a youngster of 62; a friend died ten years ago from AAA which had not been discovered, in his 50s. - I hiked VVR to Lone Pine this June (and the full JMT in 2019). - Wish you a speedy recovery and many joyful hikes!
REV you are my inspiration! On March 9 I had my eye opening experience of mortality. At 68 I had a heart attack, although it took the doctors several hours to determine that. Because I had no noticeable physical symptoms. Then the numbers started adding up. When the cardiologist came in to my room and said you had a heart attack, I was in total shock 😲. My question for you, is it possible to build up muscle mass without taking a testosterone booster? I am now pushing 70, and I sooo want to see the look on my Grandchildrens faces as I did my children, when I took them into the high country. Love your videos REV and see you in the mountains!
Thanks Jaime. Yes. It took some time for my heart to recover. And I had to build up gradually so that I could hike longer distances. My problem now is my blood pressure meds are throttling back my energy levels.
@@TheHikingRev Thanks REV, I understand the blood pressure problem oh to well 86/51. They immediately took me off the medication.
@@Jib0053 I think I’m going to eventually take myself off of it.
Loved the video, such beautiful country. I noticed on the right side of your hat you were missing a diamond shaped pin? Reminded me of an Army infantry unit? Have a great pit stop!
Thanks Rich. It was a PCT pin that I picked up in Wrightwood on my Thruhike in 2020.
New sub ! Liked ✌️😊😃
Thanks for the sub.
Greetings from Japan, Rev! Great to see you out on the trail. Wonderful video!
Question: Are your resupply towns/resorts the same as your 2020 hike?
Thanks Richard. No. I’ve skipped VVR in 2020.
Fantastic videography Rev. Just stellar👌🏻👌🏻. Some of those passes make me tired just watching. Was this edited using iMovie?
Hey Brad! Thanks. The climbs were brutal. Especially having to carry Marmalade up the hill. 😂Yes, I edited it on iMovie.
@@TheHikingRev 😂😂 fantastic.
That doesn't appear to be a heart healthy breakfast for a cardio guy. Thanks for sharing your return to the trail.
Hey Tim. They were all out of the cholesterol-lowering gruel. 😂
Appreciate you! How did you handle transportation to Bishop Trailhead and your out?
Thanks Mark. My wife is a saint. She dropped me off and picked me up. We live in the SF Bay Area.
Besides mosquitoes did you encounter any bears or snakes? So from your videos I understand you hike days into a hike, not just a 3-5 mile hike…when I go hiking it’s a few hours on a day, but I see you even camp out so you’re at location for days in, correct?
I did not see any bears or snakes. I barely saw any deer. I usually hike from 8 to 12 hours a day (6 to 6) but the terrain in the Sierra is so steep and rugged you can’t get many miles in a day. I find a campsite, at about 6 pm, usually near water, and leave the next morning.
Great Video Rev! Which pack did you use this time and did you need a permit for just a section hike?
Hey Billy. Thanks. I used the Z packs arc blast 50 liter. And yes I had to get a permit for this section hike.
Just out of curiosity. How many days did you spend at the trailhead before starting this section? Just seems to be quite the altitude right out of the gate, unless you're one of those lucky ones who don't have to acclimate before heading into altitude.
I spent the night in Bishop before heading to the Trailhead, which helped. And I took my time climbing over Bishop Pass. I also made sure that I slept at under 10,000 ft. But I did get altitude sickness two years ago climbing up Kearsarge Pass (too fast). Not fun.
@@TheHikingRev Thanks. I've gotten altitude sickness the last three times over 10,000 feet, the last time a couple of weeks ago on a hike out of Horseshoe Meadows up to Chicken Spring Lake. I think if I'd spent an extra night at Horseshoe, I probably would have been good to go.
What dates were you in that section in 2020. I was there in July. Did KM to Sierra City . . . Did the same section in 2021 and will probably do it a few more times Lord willing. I did Bishop Pass way back in 2006 when I was totally out of shape. Man was that hard LOL Spent the night in Dusy Basin. I've never seen so many mosquitoes in my life than what I encountered just after Dusy Basin
Hey John. I did that section in July 12 through July 18, 2022.
Have you considered hiking the AT?
Perhaps maybe 5 years ago.
Well I've got to tell you I was a little embarrassed when you reached the summit of Bishop Pass with that call you let out. You may not realize it but that is the mating call of the Red Belly mountain goat which lives in the Dolomites in northern Italy. You are fortunate your voice did not carry a long distance.
Believe it or not, I had someone/something answer that call. I just hope it wasn’t a mating call. 😂
Now that you’ve used the new tent. Do you like it? Does it have enough interior room, as it’s smaller (& lighter) than the older tent. Your thoughts positive & negative features.
I’m going to have to do a follow up review on the Plex Solo tent. But yes it is it does have less interior room than the Duplex but it is enough room for a single hiker.
Thank you for your reply. Looking forward to seeing it. Wishing you all the best, prayers for your health.
was this in july? Aug?
July 12 through the 18th, 2022.
Thanks. Heading there next week. Heard mosquitos not as bad in aug....hope that's true
They were starting to die off at the end of my journey.
Hi Rev this is Mike S.
I'm soon going to be 75 and could not do what you can
God bless you Rev
VVR has new owners now. Did you notice any difference?
Yes. I did not meet the new owners but received rave reviews by all the workers and volunteers. I noticed great enthusiasm among all the employees.
0:14 Mosquito!
Yep. And a lot more where he came from. 😁❤️👍
