I wanted to relate to you a very short story concerning my most recent adventure aboard Amtrak: Two moths ago, I traveled in a deluxe bedroom (as they used to be called), from Flagstaff, AZ to Savannah, GA (3 trains) aboard Amtrak. There were a few “issues” with the rooms I was assigned to that I was not overly pleased about. I remembered watching one of your videos a couple of months ago, when you suggested contacting Amtrak customer service concerning any complaints, because Amtrak will sometimes offer you a partial refund or a travel voucher, based upon the severity of the complaint. So, I took your advice and contacted Amtrak concerning the problems I encountered during my trip. The entire trip cost me $1,600. Even though it took Amtrak nearly two months to get back to me, eventually they issued me a travel voucher for $600 to be used on my next train trip! So, you guys were right and I just saved $600 by watching your channel! Thank you guys SO much for the advice!!! 😁
@Super_Chief First of all $1,600 is way too much. It sounds like getting to your destination wasn't the main thing, it was spending a fortune to get there. Amtrak is not good service. The freight trains own the tracks so the trains are always late. The food is way overpriced. I've taken it many times and I would never take it again.
@@garywilliams7454 You’re entitled to your opinion. I have personally taken Amtrak many, many times, since their conception, and the worst trip I have ever taken with Amtrak was terrific! There are millions of people just like me (including the nice folks who own this channel). We are called Railfans. A good friend told me once “It’s either in your blood, or it isn’t”. Sorry you don’t understand. 😉
@@Super_Chief It's not in my blood to pay over a thousand dollars to go from point A to point B. So if you're a railfan you that the freight trains own the tracks, not Amtrak. When Amtrak gets behind a freight train you sit sit there sometimes for an hour or two. This is the reason Amtrak trains seldom arrive on time.
I took the Lake Shore Limited from Chicago to Erie, the experience was great. That was my first time riding on an Amtrak train, but it was fun to see the amazing landscapes of the Illinois countryside, got view the beautiful locations of Indiana and Ohio before finally arriving in Pennsylvania.
Here's a way to save a few hundred dollars on a private bedroom - take Amtrak from NYC to Washington DC in the morning, then the overnight train from DC to Chicago. No joke, the price is a few hundred dollars lower than the direct NYC to Chicago route. I did that last year and I enjoyed two hours at Washington's National Gallery of Art during the interval between train trips.
I took the Lake Shore Limited from NYC to Chicago last summer, and I was lucky enough to have a roomette from which I could see the Hudson. Glorious views! I really liked the Metropolitan Lounge at the Moynihan Train Center. I had a bite to eat on the balcony - great for people watching. And the staff were very friendly and helpful.
First time I am riding in a roomette, and this is the exact train I will be on so this was great! I keep forgetting to redeem my lounge pass so not having to do that in NY will be awesome, since I'll get access with the sleeper ticket.
12:42 _ I've ridden the Lake Shore Limited From Boston To Chicago, but I never knew about the Status Feature on the Amtrak App. This is really Nice! 👍👍👍👍👍
Allie and Rob, you have to promise that on the next journey on Empire Service or Lake Shore Limited, you mention Rochester and Buffalo, 2 great cities on the Great Lakes Ontario and Erie! Great bike trails all the way from Albany along the Erie Canal to Buffalo
Allie and Rob enjoying the video right now you guys have such a positive and great vibe. I'm from Cincinnati, Ohio and will be traveling on the Cardinal next spring I'm recently retired 3 days ago and it feel good. Looking forward to more of your trips much Love 😊
I have to stop the video midway through, because my husband and I are waiting to get on the Zephyr EB. Our first train journey! We have a roommette. I don't want to miss any announcements. BTW, this station is packed!
I just took the Lakeshore Limited from NY to Chicago earlier this month. I took the Acela from DC early and spent the day in NY. The metropolitan lounge was a great place to store my luggage while I spent the day in the city. I’m jealous you had a viewliner 2. Both the sleeper cars on my train were viewliner 1s. We had a brand new dining car which was really nice and which I enjoyed. We unfortunately had a 5 hour delay due to a freight train mishap but that was not in Amtrak’s control. Allie - I hope your recovery is going well.
Glad I found your channel because I am thinking in the future to do a trip from Worcester mass to Vancouver Washington, then fly home. I find your videos very informative. Great job now. I am also a new subscriber.
The train typically leaves the city during the late afternoon, so you won’t see much during that portion of the trip via Albany, I took a nap 😴 for that reason
Thank you for the info. We were thinking about going NYC to Erie but now I see they don't have baggage service in Erie and it looks like it gets there in the middle of the night. Appreciate your videos, they're always helpful.
Gee, if you ever fell out of the upper berth into the safety harness, it might keep you from falling on the floor, but getting back into the bunk from the harness doesn't look easy.
Love your channel. I have a question? I will be leaving on a train May 30 from LA to Chicago in a roommate. I am checking 2 bags when can I do that? The train departures at 5:55pm
When we rode that train about 5 years or so ago, We had one of the older viewliners. The one that includes the toilet. If you get one, WIPE EVERYTHING DOWN! When my mom was done doing that, The antibacterial wipe was black! Good think you guys didn't get one of those.
I heard Amtrak does not own all the tracks the Lake Shore Limited uses. While Amtrak owns a small portion, the other portions use tracks owned by two commuter railroads, Metro North Railroad, and Massachusetts Bay Transit Authority, and two freight railroads, Norfolk Southern and CSX Transportation.
Did you hear that the Pere Marquette hit a truck stuck on the tracks and derailed last night? I live near GR and remember when you awarded it the worst route. The engine staff took the worst of the injuries.
You guys! Nice video, as usual. My son is going to the School of The Art Museum or Chicago in the fall. We live in Boston. We all hate flying. Does it make sense to take Amtrak from BOS to Chicago? I really want to cut down on carbon footprint travelling . But also, price is a concern. Thanks
Hi. If you had to choose between the Lake Shore or The Cardinal coming from Chicago (after The Zephyr from CA~Chicago) which would you choose? Thsnk you.
At some point, I'm curious to know whether you have ever come across problems stemming from alcohol/drug/vape use? I would expect that the top-shelf Amtrak staff would be on top of any all-too-human situations. Thanks for sharing. Robert in NYC.
would it be possible to get a coach seat as far as Albany and then switch to a roomette? That way you could have a seated view of the Hudson but comfort for the long part of the trip.
Yes. You’d have to book separately. Sometimes you will see that sleepers are “sold out” for the route you want. But with some trial and error on the app (or a phone call to a service rep) you will find rooms available for partial trips.
They have a diner. The attendant will bring any meal to the room for any sleeping car passenger on any Amtrak train -- it's part of the service. Be sure to tip your attendant.
I traveled on the Silver Star last month from PHL to TPA in a roomette. I had a very hard time sleeping. The Tray table ledge was over the bottom bed which limited the sleeping area.
I hate to it mention now because it's too late for you, but the tray table folds up and out of the way. Lift up on the edge closest to the door -- it tilts all the way up and then slides into a pocket in the window wall.
I haven’t been to very many train stations but that NY station is the worst one I’ve been in. There are no places to sit. Getting up from the floor isn’t a pretty sight. Big negative in my opinion. I avoid layovers there when possible.
If you are on Amtrak there is a ticketed passenger lounge (different than the “first class” metropolitan lounge in the video). It has quite a bit of seating and bathrooms.
@@bettiemeier8252. They do not have seats in areas that do not require tickets so homeless people do not sleep there. The police will not allow people to sit on the floor to prevent that too. Understandable but if it is very cold out, they will have fewer places to escape the cold.

Check their backlist, they have all kinds of bedroom guides.
None whatsoever though the handicap bed is somwhat wider.
The family bedroom on a superliner has a wider bed on the bottom and you might be able to sleep two.
