I am Japanese. It seems that some people are making a fuss about the lack of black people in SHOGUN. Several years before this era, there was a black samurai named Yasuke who served under Nobunaga. However, he was released from his samurai status at the same time as Nobunaga's assassination. Before him, there was no other black person in Japan. Also, in the era of this drama, only Europeans, let alone Americans, came to Japan. Also,There were no black aristocrats in Europe at that time.

Come on, Blackthorne did not even give a hint of romantic interest in her, to her and at all times, was entirely prim, proper and respectable to her. And Buntaro (and the father of her child) just died (in Mariko's mind).

What an episode! The introduction of a new (to Blackthorne) philosophy and life coping mechanism through Mariko, was perfect. You can feel chemistry brewing between Blackthorne and Mariko as she slowly immerses him in Japanese ways of thinking and doing (admonishing him for walking on the garden moss, for one). Substituting naval cannons for muskets in the final scene --brilliant! I gasped and then cheered.I was that invested in the story and characters. And that was a go big or go home moment and boy did it work.

The writing of Mariko along with Anna Sawai's acting is just so powerful that it tears me apart. If I didn't know the history behind the series I could still see the writing on the wall that Mariko's ending is NOT going to be a happy one. Her obsession with death is pretty clear that she's gonna eventually get what she wants. But I can't help but feel so desperately that I want her to have that moment of the other side of life...the joy & beauty of it.
She only gets these painfully short glimpses of it. Time with her son before her husband comes in calling him less than a man. The evening with Blackthorne and maybe for the first time in her life experiencing true love, of which was her own choosing, before having it ripped away from her. So I just want her to have a moment where she is able to gain her own agency and have a moment of enjoying the life she could've enjoyed before fulfilling the destiny she's been obsessed about. Just one moment of "life isn't only cruelty and duty but can also be beautiful and worth living".
I realize for women of this period that is neigh impossible. They were property and objects to the men that held all the power. And Mariko is sure to realize her lot in life was better than most. But still, she deserves that one moment.
Because I can't help but feel that MANY Japanese women STILL feel like her to this day. Yes, the modern Japanese woman have a LOT more freedoms to choose the life they want. But it's still very much a subservient culture. In school you MUST dress a certain way. You MUST wear your hair a certain way and it MUST be black or dark, dark brown. At work you MUST be polite and can't really stand up for yourself. In society you HAVE to act a certain way. And even if you do try to show your originality by dying your hair pink or dressing in other cultural styles or by getting tattoos you are looked down upon...even banned from bath houses and stuff. While I'm not certain of it, I imagine being Bi or Lesbian is also not that accepted either.
So I really hope that Mariko does have that moment and inspire hope among Japanese women that they too can be free to be who they want to be & will find happiness and joy that life can offer.

    Book Spoiler alert
I can't believe the episode didn't show the book chapter when Blackthorne almost commits Sepuku to save the village if he didn't learn japanese in 6 months (and order Toranaga gave), for that's the moment "Anjin" understands and embraces the japanese culture and way of life, gets the respect of the community, and shows the inneptitude of Yabbu and his counselors. For me that was a huge moment in the book, maybe the most important one.
Besides that, WOW, what an episode, the acting and direction really makes the book come alive, and shows everything as I imagined it would be. Great job!

Yes, the book is thick. And even in the 80s version there were a lot of tough decisions to make. I get that, and expect it, however, I think leaving this scene out was a mistake. Running time for both series are roughly the same amount of time. I'm still enjoying the series, but curious to see how much more they are going to take liberties with.

    Dutch Naval Cannon
This muzzle-loaded Dutch cannon was cast sometime in the late sixteenth century. It
could shoot a 33-millimeter cannonball between 300 and 500 meters and was fired by
fuse. The cannon’s wheeled carriage allowed it to be moved easily around the deck of a
warship or the battlements of a European castle.
Imported European cannons were used in Japan longer than imported muskets.
Japanese gunsmiths quickly learned to produce high-quality matchlock muskets, but
they struggled to match the durability of heavy European cannon barrels. Unlike musket
barrels, cannon barrels were typically forged as single pieces of metal.
The first cannons in Japan were a pair of breech-loading swivel guns acquired from
Portuguese traders in 1576. Dutch and English suppliers had supplanted the Portuguese
by the early 1600s. They provided the cannons that the forces of the Tokugawa
shogunate (1603-1868) used at the Siege of Osaka (1614-1615), the best-known
artillery battle of the samurai age.

No I don’t believe so. The “sequel“ called Gai-Jin isn’t the same characters and takes place like 200 years later. However, I did see that his daughter Michaela is a producer on the show and it would be up to her to approve any additional stories told after the book. It’s not clear that anyone involved wants to do that yet…but it’s not impossible. But it would be a whole brand new story never originally written by the author.

mariko and john's night time conversation by the hot spring was like teenage YA novel angsty quality dialogue "lose your self walking along the river"......."and you're free" - oh please. I rolled my eyes hard.
Mariko just saw her husband go off to die, her son is still in danger likely to be killed by Ishido, she read John's journal where he described the horrors he committed, she's allegedly a devout Christian........yet she decides to sleep with john? because he gave some generic hallmark quality "romantic" dialogue?
not to mention if it was ever found out, she'd likely be in grave danger herself. it makes zero sense for someone who is supposed to be intelligent. it also makes her seem very cold hearted
IMO, this was the weakest episode. The strength of the show is the council and tug of war with Toronaga and Ishido. I could see this Mariko-John coupling a mile away, and its easily the most boring part of the show.

Mariko Sama saw the need to sleep with Blackthorne to fix him to his prescribed task. Not for romantic reasons but because it forwarded her mission, given to her by Taranaga Sama. Blackthorne obviously preffered her to his given consort. And the reason for the consort again was to keep Blackthorne happy. Blackthorne is now happier and able to function better. And he will no longer talk of his ship and his crew. It's not silly romance it's a transaction that she has made, she believes that it is worth the risk, and she will obviously pull back if necessary. And oddly Blackthorne will still keep to the task, men are like that, or at least as she has judged this man is.
As to the novel type dialogue that was for Blackthornes benefit, to set up the sexual liaison, seems you have underestimated Mariko Sama's character.

this is easily the weakest episode so far the cut and changed to much from the book this whole episode felt way to rushed. also cutting the village being held hostage plot wtf that plot like is far to important to cut. i hope it makes an apperance next episode. but honestly this episode has destroyed a lot of the good faith this show has built thus far.

you need to stop saying 'balance of western and Japanese '; it's an exercise in stereotype & deception to sell your story. You could say instead, 'balance of US hollywood and a representation of Japanese feudal culture at higher than usual costs' which may still be an understatement, but anyway. Like the novel, this series is meant to entertain & bring tactile reality to the imagination drawing into your world building: your podcasts are part of that world building and you had all the artistic licence to make it say what you want including all the 'authentic' representations. But do be honest with your audience at some point & admit you blow smoke in our faces: your writers' intent is to show 'arrogant greedy western money grubbing lascivious colonizers' dominating the 'oh so noble buddhist stoic self-sacrificing poem writing samurai warriors serving their Lords so virtuously'. It's an entertaining show, no doubt, but your premise is still selling leftist nonsense tropes targeted to denigrate the capitalism that pays for your TV show series to exist, & pays for your generous take home pay. your viewers do deserve better than being shat on by your self-serving writing while they're being mesmerized. Justin Marks (Just N Marx!) epitomizes this self-serving hypocrisy & the writers dutifully follow. 'snivelling f*** smear', indeed!

For those who have not read the books nor seen the 80’s series, this series would appear good. It isn’t. I’ve no idea why they would take this story and wreck it like that. Apart from Yoshi Toronagas actor, all the others have been miscast(with the exception of Fujiko San). The script is appalling and there’s no need for Blackthornd to be using the F word all the time. That’s not historically accurate at all. and Cosmo Jarvisblooks like a monkey who’s been strategically shaved then put into Japanese clothing. He’s trying to be Tom Hardy.

Regarding to the F word, it comes really close to the book, both him, rodriguez and the "Anjin" crew constantly curse the japanese and call 'em names.
I think every actor has done a great job, though I always imagined kiku would be hotter, since Toranaga pays a huge load of money to buy her services.

@@cristianrosas6337 Not once did they use the F word in that book or in the 80's series. Watch that and get back to me. I thought they were supposed be 'historically accurate' and English people didn't start using that word until many centuries later!

@@Stevie-L-n8g ok, maybe not the F word, I'll give u that, but they still curse a lot in the book, and that was the point (just a quote "Go on, monkey, come at me, you stink-pissed shithead! Japanese warlords understood that foreign nations had their own customs. Wu Zetian was an Empress-ruler in the Tang Dynasty of China. In Japan, eight women have reigned as Empress, although without real power. Warlords were pragmatic by nature as shown by the tolerance of celibate priests leading the Portuguese military and trade efforts.
