You know what the story made me think of - Back in the day - if you worked Retail you knew about the Quick Change Artist who would give you money for the sake then want some back & they would give you another amount & then you got all confused & they walked out with too much money for their change back! So this sounds like a digital version.

Similarly, people bring in counterfeit $20s and make two different purchases to get change/break them.

I've had requests like that on Marketplace. Now I put on my post "Cash Only and anyone asking to pay any other way will be blocked and reported". I am with Chase too and they are very good about spotting scams, thank goodness. Sorry you had to go through this when you were in the middle of packing, working, back and forth to Dallas, etc. People are cruel. Thank you for putting this out there and may save others from being scammed.

I work for a Credit Union and we use Zelle. There is a threshold for the amount being sent out daily and monthly. Your bank’s algorithm showed that you’re not a regular Zelle user and that’s why you had to call and confirm the transaction. Take solace that this transaction was flagged. Glad it was caught.

The company I work for requires us to take Security Awareness training constantly to identify potential scams like this, to prevent things like this from happening on an even larger scale. These people spoof emails and come at you with a sense of urgency, push, push, push, threaten you, make you feel guilty, expecting quick action..all to make you feel pressured and not pay attention to the details. There is no question in my mind this was all to get $250 from you, and while they were working you for it, they were probably working 27 other people at the same time. it is a very lucrative scam for these people. I'm so sorry this happened to you. I honestly think the only reason you didn't catch it was a scam at the beginning is because you wanted to get home so bad and were so exhausted from the packing , etc. They just happened to catch you at a vulnerable time. 💛💛💛

  • @dawngiven9982
    @dawngiven9982 11 месяцев назад +2

Marie, I know exactly how you feel. I consider myself an intelligent person and above scamming. I found out I am not. It is so easy to fall into. My deal was regarding a subscription and when I put in the amount that I supposedly owed for the subscription they changed it to $3,000 instead of $300. Of course I never had any such subscription which is why I called them because I didn't want them to charge me that. Like you, I didn't want to do anything wrong. When I check the money was in my account. In the end I called the bank and found out that they had transferred money from my credit card into my account. If I had bought the cards and sent them they would have had my 25 or 2700. Thankfully I wised up. But it is so easy to be taken even when you are savvy to scams. I understand completely!

I'm so sorry this happened to you, Marie. This just happened to me a few days ago while I was trying to sell a table and chairs on FB marketplace, too. It took me a few minutes of going back and forth with these people, but then I caught on and blocked them immediately. As that conversation was going on, I had another person wanting to buy it and giving me the same line, I blocked immediately. I think all I've dealt with are scammers these last few days. I changed to cash only on the description, and those inquiries stopped.

  • @SusieBound4Heaven

I understand people saying cash only and they pick up, but I also see how that can be a bit intimidating for Marie. Im a single woman. If 2 guys come to puck up a heavy item, they can hand me $500, hit me over the head, take the item, take the money back and leave me for dead. Its a scary world out there. It makes me angry! 😠 I sell a lot, but mainly on local sites where names would be seen, and I always have another person here when pick up occurs!!!! That and I have a "little friend". 😉 In my opinion Marketplace, Craigslist are too big. Local Facebook sales groups may be better. Of course hindsight is ALWAYS 20/20!!! Stay safe out there!!!

My best friend actually went through this same exact scam in March I think it was and she fell for it too. She contacted her bank and told them about it. Also, My friend contacted Zelle and asked them about everything and they said they didn't send her any emails. A good rule to go by is if an email from a credit card company or anything like that doesn't say your actual name (for example: if the email says "dear customer..."), then it's a scam.

Sorry you went through that on the FB scam! I work for a local PD so I have heard/seen them all. I don't trust anyone anymore..lol I have even called out a guy in a Taco Bell for playing the old "wife was in a wreck and I need money for gas to get to the hospital" scam. I wont do that again but it is ridiculous the lengths some people go to to avoid making a legitimate living! Good catch from your bank. I had my dad's life insurance proceeds check that was stolen from the Atlanta post office (the scammers stole three other peoples checks from there too) before it made out to my suburban address and was forged and cashed by persons unknown. I would never have known (I wasn't expecting the check yet) had Bank Of America not called me from their fraud department (not my bank-it never made it that far) but at least the banks are watching for some of these bad guys. Other than this instance, did you have pretty good luck with FB marketplace? I have a ton of stuff to sell from my parents house and figured that may be the best way to go rather than estate sales or yard sales.

They said do you trust me I’ll deposit that if you send it right back to me. And at that point, I just said I would rather just deal with cash Thank you and then they disappeared and they also deleted their Facebook profile so the whole thing was a scam even who they were was made up after that I called my bank and reported it and they said that there was never a transaction for the wedding dress which was only $175 so I guess that’s the new scam going around! It happened to me, just like you. Different scenario but the same crap. My bank saved me. I felt like an idiot. Sitting here arguing with these scammers and it’s just not clicking in my brain yet. So I totally get it. My bank wouldn’t even listen to me!! I thought nothing could get past me. I never use Zelle, even though it’s an option at my bank, I will never use it. But thank you for your story. People need to know. Glad you’re happy and back home. Love ❤️ your videos. Been watching for years. Looking forward to the next video.

Marie, I'm glad those losers didn't get by with their scam. I'm sad you didn't keep that piece, I loved that piece. It was
beautiful, I loved it. Sorry you had to go through all that trouble with those low-life scammers. I hope they get busted soon.

I’m so sorry this happened to you! I think they were taking advantage of your exhaustion. When we’re exhausted, it’s more difficult to process things. I always go by the rule, if it doesn’t seem or sound right, it probably isn’t. It’s also good to run it by another person. I usually ask my kids if I’m not sure, because they’re usually more up on scams and that kind of stuff than I am. Fortunately, your bank caught it and the only thing you were out was your time. Thank you for telling us what happened because it’s always good to know these things because we can all be victims of this crazy stuff people do. Try to put it all behind you and focus on being back home and finding a new home! ❤️

Yesss!! It’s crazy these days. I get at least 2 or 3 of those for every item I post. Now I say CASH ONLY and they still do it. Got to the point where I just started telling them “cash only. Don’t wanna get scammed.” And then…. Crickets. Be careful out there girl. The lengths they go to are insane.

Also they use zelle as the scam because it's very hard to recover your money once it's sent. They know this. Just don't do anything if a person has all these requirements to do a sale with them.

The bank I worked for unfortunately a scammer took a lady for about $60,000. We tried to talk to her and stop it but she was fully convinced they were legit.

So sorry Marie! When my grandma still lived at home she got called and told she'd won from some giveaway she entered but she had to send them $800 for "processing" and then she'd get like a million dollars. She went to get a money order and the person had to explain it was a scam 😭 people are so awful!

I am so careful now about everything and question everything that seems a little off. These scammers are getting good, but its truly sad they go to these lengths for a few hundred dollars. Everyone stay vigilant!

Sorry to hear about your ordeal. It happens to even the brightest of people. A lot of the scammers are from Nigeria or India. There are guys on RUclips (hackers themselves) who hack into the scammer’s computer and catches them red handed averting someone from getting scammed.
Glad it worked out for you Marie!
