  • Yarn Ply Explained: What? & Why?
    Yarn ply can affect lots of things when you're knitting. You'll notice the differences, not only in the finished knit, but in how you hold the yarn to knit. Today I invite you to to join me as I dive into the reasons they're there and what they achieve.

    You explain so well. I am about to knit again after many years and find myself with so many questions. I have found a good substitute yarn for a cowl pattern and the only part that I needed an explanation on was the number of plies. Both types of wool are chunky and a pretty good match. One is one ply and the one I want to buy is 3-ply. I believe that the 3-ply will work on the pattern. Gauge stated on the label is pretty much the same also.
    Thank you so much for what you do.

      I’m so glad you’ve got your answer. Yes, substituting a single ply for a 3 ply will work well, but not the other way around. You’ll get more stitch definition with a 3ply, so if you were swapping the other way you’d lose that. You can get going now - happy knitting! 🧶

      As you can see in this video, that isn't possible without working with the yarn. You will likely have to test the yarn yourself to find out. This will help: ruclips.net/video/hw07ClMcy2U/видео.html

    Hello great vid. Would a sweater made from 6ply shetland wool be considered thick or heavy duty ? Thank You

    • @KnitWithHannah
      @KnitWithHannah  3 года назад +2

      Hi Christopher, the stitch pattern that you're knitting up would make a difference too - a cable or slip-stitch pattern would be warmer than a lace. And it would depend on the thickness of the yarn - not just the number of plies as I showed in the video. Generally speaking a 100% wool jumper will be warm and cosy once knitted up. happy knitting! :D

    • @kissme4492
      @kissme4492 3 года назад +1

      @@KnitWithHannah They would be using Shetland wool. Would that make any difference? Thanks so much for your time.

    • @KnitWithHannah
      @KnitWithHannah  3 года назад +1

      @@kissme4492 the warmth doesn't generally differ on the origin of the wool. The softness, water resistance, colours/dyes would be more significant depending on origin. happy knitting!

    Hi😊 what if i crochet 5ply and checkered with 4ply, will it turn out wrong or just fine?
    The color i wanted doesnt come with 5ply so i dont know what to do. Can you help me or suggest whats beter?

    • @KnitWithHannah
      @KnitWithHannah  2 года назад

      Hi, I'm by no means an expert in crochet, so it'll likely be better for you to ask a crocheter, as I've not heard of anything other than the checker pattern that looks like squares alternating between two colours. If that's it, then you may notice the yarn thickness difference.
      I have crocheted in the past with a mix of yarn weights and it's turned out fine. It does tend to be more noticeable in knitting, but that's just my experience as someone who hasn't crocheted much!
      It really does depend on the intention for the project too. - is it for a University final exam, or a blanket to throw on the back of the sofa?!

    What should I do if my yarn threads are unplying?

    • @KnitWithHannah
      @KnitWithHannah  2 года назад

      I re-twist while I’m knitting. Or finish a row and turn the ball of yarn 🧶 round and round on a flat surface to let the ply tighten. Happy knitting 🧶

    What is worsted/fil what does thr fil mean

    • @KnitWithHannah
      @KnitWithHannah  8 месяцев назад

      Worsted can refer to thickness of wool and can also be about the processing method - how the yarn is carded, or combed, before spinning.

    Awesome, but it's a single yarn or a ply yarn. A single yarn is unlpyed. Yes, I'm being pendantic spinner.

      @KnitWithHannah  2 года назад +1

      haha! That's cool. Not seen it called that in any knitting book - now I'm curious, you have me wondering about spinning! Happy knitting 🧶

    • @keturahspencer
      @keturahspencer 2 года назад +1

      @@KnitWithHannah there's a typo. It should say unlpyed yarn. So, to ply is fold back on itself. When making yarn one plies by twisting two or more singles in the opposite direction. A singled yarn was never plied.

      What's the best yarn to use for babys knitting

    • @keturahspencer
      @keturahspencer Месяц назад

      @@lynrenshaw1746 I'm not sure there is a "best" yarn for baby knits. It's a matter of opinion. I personally would go for cottons, linens, silks, bamboo, or fine wools. Babies put everything in their mouth and I don't trust acrylics to be very safe.
