Nice to meet you David! Good job taming the monster portulacaria. I love the overall shape and I'm looking forward to seeing it with a denser branch structure.

      Thanks Stefan!
When I got this tree in early 2021 I was very overwhelmed by it, now that I have laid out a first iteration of primary branch structure I have a good idea of where the tree will go. I am guessing it’s gonna look fairly well developed in terms of density by the end of next year, that’s roughly the time I am thinking of updating the tree :)

@@Bonsaifly I'm sure it will only get better with each year.

There are 2 shorts that are more recent. There‘s a playlist called Portulacaria Afra No. 3 on my channel where you can see all the videos on this tree :)

Looks awesome typically how long do you leave the wire on this species, I have never wired mine but have had one from a local bonsai nursery for a year. Thanks!

I think the particular wire from this video stayed on for about a year. It really depends on how much your tree is growing

How long will the bonsai need the wire to keep it’s shape? Is it years? Or will it always need wire to hold it’s form?

To be honest this tree will need some wire to hold itself in place for a bit before thickening up. There are more recent shorts videos on the tree where you can see the shape holding a little better but a stabilizing piece of wood being used to keep it more upright. I reckon 4-5 years of growth and development and it’ll hold without much wire

My substrate for this tree is a mix of pumice and lava
