    dude, takes guts to post a video of crashing with your daughter. i would be too ashamed. but i'm not judging you negatively. i could have easily made the same mistake. glad you were both okay. thanks for sharing.

    Glad no one was hurt. And thanks for sharing a video that really informs people about what can happen while riding on a crumby road despite the potential embarrassment.

      @ironhorse8125  7 лет назад +6

      Thanks! I admit I was hesitant to share the video, especially since I had my little girl with me. We were going on a light ride (I thought) and it didn't turn out well. I think the point is to always wear riding gear no matter what. We are doing that now! Thank God we were OK!

    She's a real trooper, that's for sure!! That's great that you got back on and went back to the spot. That's the way to do it.

    Look at all the protective riding gear in the panniers. That's a great place for it. Consider yourself lucky.

      Thanks for the comment! Yes that is even more stupidity, isn't it. We were very lucky I would say and are now looking into safety gear for the kids. Thanks again for the comment!

    So lesson not really learned as your daughter still was not wearing protective gear. Also your passenger should never get on the bike before you do.

    I love the fact you're being open and honest about your mistake and teaching others (and your daughter too) a valuable lesson -
    never become too comfortable to ride smart! I'm glad you were both ok and that your daughter wasn't put off by the fall. :)
    You learn from every mistake and it's no reason to be scared and stop riding. Clear skies and safe rides!

    your side bag saved your daughter's leg there. i always thought that side bags (hard cases) has another purpose during crash. and it did. good that you were both OK. ride safe always.

    • @ironhorse8125
      @ironhorse8125  7 лет назад +6

      Well stated! I gladly took the damage for that cause for sure, her leg was safely nestled inside the profile of the hard bag. I took the bag, laid it in the hot sun and it popped back into shape. Oh, and we do have better safety gear now for riding. Thanks again for the comment!

    It is so great that both of your daughters are into riding with their dad. It can be fantastic bonding experience. By all means invest in some proper riding apparel for those young ladies.It will give them a feeling of security and make riding more comfortable. Stay safe and enjoy the ride, Rich

      When I was 20, I rode from Long Island to Daytona Beach in jeans and a T shirt. That was 35 years ago. Crashing hurts a lot more than it use to. These days I'm usually covered head to toe in decent riding gear. Just found your channel, enjoying your videos. PS , Nova Scotia was the best riding of my life. Take your daughter.👍

    • @ironhorse8125
      @ironhorse8125  7 лет назад +1

      We have a lot in common. As I am learning about adventure bike riding I am also learning the importance of gear. It is odd, but I actually never really thought about it before or accident. That crash really ended up being a blessing in disguise! We are planning our trip for summer of 2018 and will definitely video it! Lots of prep this summer and I'll share those videos as well. Thanks for watching my channel!

    Everybody saying you didn't learn your lesson, like you went right back out and did the same exact thing the next day. The way you were riding the second time around tells me you learned a lot.
    Nobody wants to talk about this but sometimes having all that safety gear gives you a sense of security and you take risks that you wouldn't take without it.
    I know it wasn't easy to share this video, thank you. I learned something from it.

      Yeah, I admit I was hurting from my hyper extended knee, but I wasn't going to let her know! I really was primarily concerned that she was OK, and made up the story about this being a better bike for crashing :). The damaged pannier bag did protect her though, and I am grateful for that. I always put a top case on the bike but if needed i use soft side luggage if you wreck with them not a big issue. The OEM boxes are way expensive and get destroyed way to easy. First thing i did when i got my Versys 1000LT home was to take off the side luggage and store them away.

    • @ironhorse8125
      @ironhorse8125  7 лет назад

      Great comment, thanks! I was surprised with these factory bags how they kind of "popped back" into shape by sitting them in the sunlight. The latch is broken, but JB weld helps with that. I think perhaps the key is to get some good crash bars that protect the pannier bags. I am looking for those. Ride safe my friend!

    I'm glad to see your daughter is fine. I know every other comment in this feed is going to say this, but you shouldn't ride on a gravel road with a passenger who has no gear on, you two got really lucky. That being said, thanks for posting the video. I was just looking for a video that showed a bike washing out an a gravel road last week (not kidding), just to see what it looked like and how it happened, but I couldn't find one. I'm also glad to see those crash bars did well. Mine are on their way, I bought them two days ago. You should send this to T-Rex! Cheers

    it's so easy to dive in a versys in lose gravel!!! I never did but I always felt uneasy about it. Always rode on a lower gear just to be prepared to throttle. It's due mostly to the tires and smal wheel. Also, in the versys, the balance point is really high and towards de front.

    I have the same bike/year in green.
    "Street bike" not a dirt bike. Just because it has hand guards like an enduro doesn't mean it is one. People are confused by this for some reason. Hint, street tires, front fender hugs the front tire, saddle bags.... Oh, did I mention street tires.
    Anyone who takes this bike (or any other street bike) off pavement going this fast is just asking for trouble. Luck your kid was, ok.

    Firstly I'm glad your daughter and yourself were OK, and glad you say you have learned your lesson. Riding with no gear is crazy especially when you have it but just choose not to wear it. Then there is the fact when you go back to the site your daughter still isn't geared up, what lessons are you teaching her ? Also pillions should always be dismounting first while your on the bike, leaving her sat on the back on the side stand is also pretty stupid.

  • @robw2326
    @robw2326 6 лет назад

    I gotta say, this *was* incredibly stupid on many levels.
    I also gotta say we have all done stupid stuff and most people don't publicly own it like you did here. Sounds like you're on the right track to correcting it by remembering your own gear, slowing down, and *especially* making sure your kid has gear! They're trusting you with their lives every time they get on that bike.
    Glad nobody was hurt. Sorry you screwed up. Awesome of you to own it like you are and correct your mistakes in the future. All in all this was a relatively easy way to learn some very important lessons that I'm sure will stick with you. You handled the post-incident well all around.

    Glad you two came out unscathed... The versys definitely can lull you into a sense of simplicity and invulnerability for sure, buuuuuuuuuut My GAWD MAN... GET SOME RIDING GEAR for your daughter! ATGATT... teach her that nobody should go squidding on a bike.... But again glad you all made it back in one piece and she sure is one tough cookie to shake it off and get right back on without any drama for sure..... The versys can take an unbelievable amount of punishment.... I've rolled mine down a ravine, stood it up straightened the mirrors a bit and Vrooooom! back to life... I've seen BMW's totally incapacitated by lesser crashes. ;) Plus thanks for posting this, you really prove that you're about learning from mistakes by showing the world "this is what can happen, and it could have been worse.... we got lucky" real life scenarios...

      Thanks for the comment and honest commentary. I have since bought gear for the kids and am teaching them that we learn from our lessons. This is an awesome bike and can take a lot of abuse. Recently, I was doing a slow u turn on a back road and I laid the bike down on the left side...no damage and like you said VROOM! afterwards. Ride safe my friend!

    If you're not wearing ATGATT yourself, that's none of my concern. You're old enough to decide that for yourself, but at least give the girl some decent protection.. (gloves/ankle boots and some pants that aren't already ripped through (be it for looks only or otherwise)).
    In any case, glad she jumped right back on, rather than being too scared to ever ride again. Some could learn from that..

    So glad you two were ok... it could have been so different. Don't beat yourself up buddy, learn from this episode and move on never making that same mistake again eh. Your daughter is more precious to you than anything in the world along with any pillion passenger that places total trust in you and your ability and I know you'd never hurt her or them intentionally. I'm sure you've learned a valuable lesson from this episode and thx for sharing so that others may watch and learn how easy it is to hurt yourself and your passenger....Enjoy the bike together my friend and never forget your precious cargo ; ) just one final word - Pleeeeeze make sure you and your passengers wear the correct safety clothing, at all times.... Gloves, and body clothing with armour at the very least to protect vulnerable areas in the event of a fall. RSMF from the UK

    Thanks for the video. I'm thinking about getting a Versys but I'm looking for a used one with ABS. There don't see to be that many out there. In a way it's good because it taught her to deal with a scary situation. She won't be one of these wussy women who won't want to try something new. =)

    how did this happen ? u were going straight

    • @ironhorse8125
      @ironhorse8125  7 лет назад

      It happened very quickly as you can see. There was a very deep rut in the road, my front tire was on top of the rut and my rear tire was inside the rut trying to climb up the side. This pitched the bike to the left and then it snapped around to the right for the lowside. At least that is what I think happened. Thanks for watching

      Hi Brock. No, I think it means two things: one is that I need to learn better off roading skills and then two I should invest in tires that have better capability than the stock touring tires. Plus better safety gear! Thanks for the comment!

Thanks again!

      Did you amd the little one get motorcycle clothing, gloves, shoes? My friend dosent see the need in it so im going to take him to see my step fater who's entire body looks like a colage of different colored skin everywhere from his skin graph surgery. In coming off a bike without gear, that destroyed his body for the rest of his life. After that i think my friend will buy the pants afterall.

      I am investing in gear for all of us (I have three children who like to ride all different sizes of course!). Until then, no one rides. Ride safe!
