I have been a stylist for 30 years and these techniques are new to me and admittedly actually frightening but I can no longer avoid them to stay current. Your video helped me so much especially about the money piece. I did a client yesterday with a thicker money piece and her hair looked incredible when it was down but pulled back it looked odd. I failed to explain that to her or even know that I should have. She is coming back for me to weave a few low lights. I am also getting used to these techniques take longer when I used to do a traditional highlight, cut and style in 2 hours. I felt like I was doing something wrong taking so long I like that you explain the costs and how to communicate this to clients. Next thing to tackle is toning. I sweat the entire time the toner is on afraid I am going to ruin the work I just did and cover it up too much. But anyway I am going to watch all your videos. Thank you for teaching this old dog some new tricks.
Of course! Thank you so much for watching! With toning, pull the hairline pieces aside and tone last cause they grab faster, tone underneath first if your unsure how it's going to process. If anything grabs too dark, or whatever clarify it out if you need to. Usually it will pull the overtone out and leave the tone really pretty
Kristi, I want to come on here and say thank you! I did this exact foil method on my cousin who came to my school and it turned out so beautifully. I wish I can show you! Thank you times a million, you hold a special place in my heart and I always come back to your videos.
“I thought her hair was to her shoulders” this sh*t happens to me all the time. I love the beginning of the video talking about pricing and appt time it’s raw real hairdresser complications

Wow your work is top notch!!! I really love how you thoroughly explain everything of why you’re doing something or using a certain color or technique, that is so super helpful thanks so much for your videos I am learning so much from you! thank you❤️
You do such great work, Kristi!! I love your work!! Wow!! It's a lot of work. That's for sure! That's why you guys charge a lot of money. However, it's worth it, if that's the color you want. I had highlights for five or six years. My hair is the same color as your client. I absolutely loved the highlights. My hair colorist used a honey blonde color on my hair. It was absolutely beautiful!! I loved it!! However, I learned that I needed to moisturize my hair with a deep conditioner at least twice a week for the highlights to look good. Since then, I decided to go back to the dark hair. However, I sure do miss the highlights. They made me look much younger, which is a good thing, since I'm 66 years old. Lol. The highlights blend in better with the gray hair, too. 💖
Thank you for the video. I’m a hairstylist. I’ve been doing hair for 37 years. I’m in doing Baliage foliage all of it. It’ll be very informative for people if they could see the color of the lighted hair before you tone. If it is a dark gold if it is a pale, gold, accelerate, etc.. And was the hair dry when you turned it was at work when you turned it. Also, let them know if it’s a dark gold. He may want to add more blue. If it’s a very light pale gold, you may want to add more purple picking your toner is everything. Also, it would’ve been great if you showed how the front came out.
As an older hairdresser of 40 years who’s still loving doing hair but obviously having to learn new techniques I have to say your video is so informative, makes perfect sense to me and gives me inspiration, I thank so ❤️
This is a awesome video!! Great job going through it all step by step. 🥰 a lot of videos don’t go through step by step like you did. Thank you so much. And I love that you did a long dark hair , both my daughters have long long dark hair and so this really was helpful. 💕😀!
I don’t agree with lower volume especially when you aren’t using heat. The volume cuts in half when you mix with anytime so the proactive time is reduced. My opinion and I’ve learned from many professionals. You are amazing!! I just don’t agree with that statement. 30 years in the business also. Educator, platform artist and lover of hair!!! Merry Christmas and God bless!!
I am in love with this color....this is exactly what I want...perfect color and perfect temperature....I have virgin dark hair like your client...I want to get my hair done before my birthday...how can I describe this color and most importantly the temperature of the color to whoever does my hair at the salon? You are amazing!
Great video! Very descriptive! My only question is why start in the front before the back top section? Usually the front would need to be washed out before the back then unless you used a lower developer up front.

Do you mean like minerals in the water? Anything that deposits and leaves warmth in your hair, toning a warm color will work with it instead of fighting against it.
I used ashy tones cause she's going to lift very warm from bleaching. But I didn't want her to be too ashy since she wanted a caramel tone so I added just a slight warmth to the formulation.
So I didn’t understand the first thing you applied it was bleach ? And then after taking off the foil do you wash the whole hair ? And then apply the colors ? Then the toner ??? Please answer me can I buy this at Sally’s
Thank you!, I wouldn't have..... for 1, the cost of color. That would have been boxes and boxes of color. Adding to the cost. Also, Wanting to be around a level 7/8 caramel, I wouldn't trust color to do the job from how dark and coarse her hair is, on top of not wanting to use 40 vol. I don't use high lift so you may know more tricks than me. Bleach is just predictable
Hey Kristi! I have a question does it make a difference if you use a different brand developer with a good lightener like (redken, blonde me, matrix, Paul mitchell ect.)? I’m a student and I love watching your videos they are super informative and I’ve learned a lot thank you so much 😊 love, Michey ❣️
Hello, thank you so much! As much as I think generally it's "ok" to use different developers with other brands, I don't recommend it. Sure, I will if I'm last minute out of something but I wouldn't make regular practice out of it. They formulate everything to work together, so I wouldn't want to interfere with the outcome by inter mixing lines. Good luck with school!
When someone has extremely long thick hair and takes literally all day, that’s the cost of the service. She got exactly what she wanted and was happy with the service. Just because YOU don’t think it’s worth $500 doesn’t mean it’s not.
It's not. You can see the foil application it's even all the way around. With balayage, generally having it drop down and darker towards the back, if that's what the client wants, creates a more natural effect. The end shot, shes pushing the sides towards the back of the head to see everything better. The hair is brighter towards the front of the face (money piece section) so that's why the back crown area looks much darker. But when the hair rests naturally, it blends softly to be darker at the root/ crown area. Everything is intentional for what the client wants.
I really enjoy your videos! I like your realness, like how you don't front about your formulas (like you admit when you don't have correct measurements, lol, your appearance, everything! I incorporated your face framing techniques and your root shadow techniques ( which are sooo easy to understand, btw) into my services and WOW! Beautiful results! And thankyou for giving us the confidence to charge by the hour because girl, products do get expensive! I quoted $180 and it tool me 4 hours! I was pissed! Anyway, I'm subscribed!
Oh yay! Thank you so much for all that! That really makes me happy to know! I try being honest in everything cause I hate FAKE instagrammers and you tubers. Like girl, we are not always smiley and perfect. Lol And yes! Start charging your worth!
I love how well you explain the process and price to your client. I have dark and thick hair and the times I’ve gone to get a balayage done, I’m always told “I’ll do my best to get a closest as I can to that tone”, which meas that I never know what my hair is going to look like. :( I thought that people just don’t know how to work with dark hair but here you are doing an impeccable job! So beautiful!! 🤍
So true, I have been told SO many times “my hair is virgin,” or “natural.” You were smart to do the strand test. Her hair is so dark, I really thought it was colored.
Wow just beautiful!!!! Your literally the first person I have seen who show the whole process of your Techniques thank you for sharing again this helped me so much.

I really really appreciate how you have these honest conversations about your prices, I understand these are luxury services it’s an art form. I’ve left some salons feeling ripped off because we didn’t communicate.
Thank you for the good tips! I like your confidence doing this job and that you have been very honest and clear explaining the client before starting, that's a good professional! Loved
I'm getting foliage tomorrow and I have black hair I'm sooooo excited!!! This turned out great!!! She looks amaze balls 😍😍 I'm getting golden honey caramel highlights!
Hi Kristi WOW!👏🏼 absolute stunning as always and my heart just felt for you when you said you didn't realise how long it was🙄 I remember when I was salon based and clients would telephone for costing and when asked the length of there hair it was always "just to the shoulder " and yet when they arrived there shoulders had "dropped to there waist" 😳🙄😉 yet then had to stick to the price quoted 😫 needless to say I soon asked them to call in the salon for a "proper look see" ! 😉 ooh blimey she was like a cross between Rapunzel and lady Godiva 🤣 but it was a beautiful result 👍 stay well Kristi and thank you as always Paul 😘💋x
Yes! I didn't know what to expect! Her hair was falling out of her pony tail that was wrapped up.... when she pulled it down, whoaaaaaaaaa ok yeah this won't be just 2 hours! 🤣🤣🤣🤦♀️🤦♀️🤦♀️
Hi, I do have the same dark color natural hair. I want to highlight my hair with loreal (630 caramel). Can you please tell me the amount of 20 vol. used ? How much amount of developer and colourant creme should be mixed ?
Oh Kristi, thank you so much for this video!!! I have been wanting to do balayage but I couldn’t as all the videos I see the hair of the clients already in other colours.. Thank you thank you… Now I can do balayage
Thank you for the breakdown on the price, my rate is also around $70 an hour, I feel like stylist don’t want to put a price tag on their work or say how much it really costs, whenever I ask no one answers me, they’re like “ it depends on the length” and area you’re located “ but the more we are open about it to our clients and we value our work there’s less confusion and feeling that we are working hard and not seeing revenue. And also this particular method I call “Fiolayage” because I use foils, if it’s open Balayage is one price but foilayage is more expensive because I take thinner sections and more bleach versus the open Balayage where is “free hand” and quick for me. Thanks a lot great color and video😍
To each their own! That just means you prefer lower maintenance hair with less transformation, or don't have nearly as long or thick of hair requiring that much time
First thing. Do not cut strands out off the hair for strand tests. Wtf. I’m sorry but that’s unprofessional. If you don’t know how to do strand tests with have ON the hair. Take a blonding course.
I would assume you started out with 10 vol ? And remix with higher volume as you work up to top? And what color of toner? I have had problems with the hair heating up with so many foils. If that makes sense. I have a client level 4 wanting carmel so just need little more details. Please and thank you.
I am gearing up to do something like this on a virgin hair black wig, any recommendations or shortcuts I can do? The wig is 22" and I plan on cutting 2-4 inches off, plus adding long layers. I want a similar color. Also how much Olaplex do you add per bowl (formula please?). Thank you Sooo much for your very detailed and excellent tutorials. I ❤U
Oh im not really sure about on a wig since it's already been heavily processed so idk how it will lift and also olaplex lists instructions for what to use

Hi Krist is it ok to use 40 vol. with color because she looks to be vergin hair🙏👍
I never like to use 40 volume. So I guess if that's something you're comfortable with, you could.
Where are you located??
I am in wa state! An hour north of Seattle
Love the turnout of this! Did you apply the toner all over or just to your highlighted sections?
I applied all over. A toner generally doesn't effect the hair on anything darker than what your toning.
What was the end cost at the end of it all? I have hair a tad bit longer but not as thick and I want my hair done asap!

I love how well you explain the process and price to your client. I have dark and thick hair and the times I’ve gone to get a balayage done, I’m always told “I’ll do my best to get a closest as I can to that tone”, which meas that I never know what my hair is going to look like. :(
I thought that people just don’t know how to work with dark hair but here you are doing an impeccable job! So beautiful!! 🤍
First timer. Here
I love how you explained in detail the outcome of the techniques.
Thank you for this very helpful
I just subscribed
Oh hi! Thank you so much for watching she subscribing! I’m so glad this helped!
So true, I have been told SO many times “my hair is virgin,” or “natural.” You were smart to do the strand test. Her hair is so dark, I really thought it was colored.
Yes! Better safe than sorry!
Wow just beautiful!!!! Your literally the first person I have seen who show the whole process of your Techniques thank you for sharing again this helped me so much.
Looks like she has so much hair! And you absolutely have so much patients for it! Very nice job. Curious how long did you leave the toner on for?
Thank you! Probably 15 minutes total
Beautiful work girl. I like your way of doing things! #StylistSupportingStylist
Thank you so much! #stylistssupportingstylists, the only way to be!
I wish you showed the front. I wanted to see what the money piece looked like.
Il post it on my Instagram there so you can check it out if you want, @kristi.at.the.cottage
The service was like 6 hours long and I knew she was in a hurry to leave so I didn't want to take forever on pictures
I really really appreciate how you have these honest conversations about your prices, I understand these are luxury services it’s an art form. I’ve left some salons feeling ripped off because we didn’t communicate.
Clients don’t always know what they want -they often come for advice
That's very true! And sometimes it's hard to give suggestions when they have absolutely no idea what they want. Makes it hard to get the right outcome
This is something I always wanted 15 years ago. Instead, I would end up with choppy blond streaks every time.
I love how u work and take care of hair integrity you are awesome
Thank you for the good tips! I like your confidence doing this job and that you have been very honest and clear explaining the client before starting, that's a good professional! Loved
Thank you so much! Honesty is key!
I'm getting foliage tomorrow and I have black hair I'm sooooo excited!!! This turned out great!!! She looks amaze balls 😍😍 I'm getting golden honey caramel highlights!
seriously love love your detailed video and the explanations throughout. Your a fantastic teacher
Usually it's its 1:1 ratio, but the manufacturer's instructions should be in the box
Yes! That makes total sense! I think also it's good to put a price so client see and have a realistic expectation for what to expect services to cost.
Nice caramel look overall looks great! 😀
Thank you! ♥️♥️🥰
I would 💩 myself if i had to spend 5hours in a salon, regardless of the service.
To each their own! That just means you prefer lower maintenance hair with less transformation, or don't have nearly as long or thick of hair requiring that much time
@@hairbykristijennings6648 i’d rather split the service over 2 days. Life waits for no-one 🏃🏻♂️
I'd love for you to do my hair!
I’d love that too!
Hi kristy genning four caramela color what developer you us you did not tell you skip skip you hav to tell be honest
First thing. Do not cut strands out off the hair for strand tests. Wtf. I’m sorry but that’s unprofessional. If you don’t know how to do strand tests with have ON the hair. Take a blonding course.
Such a nice result!! Love your video...appreciate you.
Thank you so much!
I would assume you started out with 10 vol ? And remix with higher volume as you work up to top?
And what color of toner?
I have had problems with the hair heating up with so many foils.
If that makes sense.
I have a client level 4 wanting carmel so just need little more details.
Please and thank you.
Hello! I just use 20 vol unless it needs a push past being too brassy and I go over toner formulation in the video.....
I’d love to hang around you sometime! You are absolutely the best at educational videos, and always an inspiration!
Oh thank you so much! If you don’t mind swear words Every now and then, I’m down! 😂😂
I could watch you doing hair forever
I love to hear that!
I am black hair can you plz give me exactly that formal plz … i looooove your job soooo much
