The second is that you never learn to swim looking at the pool from the diving board. You have to dive into things in life, and you will have embarrassing moments. You will look like a newbie, but most people aren't going to even notice enough to care. Those that do care, may offer some support or advice. Most people aren't filled with the rage that you'll find in the average internet thread. For the gym I have two recommendations for a beginner / first timer. The first is that you shouldn't try to go too heavy. You'll hurt yourself and scare yourself away from fitness. Secondly, take it slow and make sure you have good form. If you're picking up 20lbs in the right way, it can be worth more than 50lbs the wrong way. (i.e. Swinging it with momentum.) If you follow good practices, go consistently and make gains, you will get noticed for the right reasons. (You'll start to get ripped, if your diet is right, and you'll be impressively strong.)
