      One day Putin will die. In 6 years there will be another election. I think there's a go chance the Russian people will have realised what a terrible idea the war was by then. Putin might not be able to cheat enough to win that time. Or maybe opposition could become strong enough for something to happen before then. But the threshold for Putin to lose power in an irregular way would be much higher than the threshold for people to work to rule and allow a fairer election that he could lose. If more countries especially China and India turn their backs on Russia, and if the need to Russian oil and gas can be reduced through a combination of reducing demand via the energy transition and other countries to increase production, then things could get much harder for Russia economically. That might Russians the message.

      @@senianns9522 LOL !!!!!!!!
      The huge majority of young Russsians has cut themselves off from any communucation to foreign states other than China or North Korea. Their only source of information is russian mass media. Russian mass media is under full and strict control of the Russian governement. And the Russian governement has been purged. It was replaced by FIS agents during Putin's first regime.
      Communism was a dark period in Russia, no doubt. But when scientists examine the flow of information through the iron curtain at the time of communism and compare it to the flow of information from nowadays to the world, they name communism the age of light !!!!!
      This generation of Russians also had the chance to vote someone else than Putin when he was elected the first time. The necessary effort to do so was minimal: A pencil stroke. Nearly no one of this generation took the chance.
      If you really think that the younger Russians are a hope for their country, than there is no hope.

      @macswad Год назад +17

      @@pwaegemans I don't think it does because of the timeline. English people had settled in Ireland (& vice versa) long before the definition of sovereignty, or ideas of Empire & even during the Empire people from Ireland served in the British Army. The Irish fought & won their Independence over 100 years ago. UK also supports the principle of the right to self determination & has done so since the 1940's which is why it gave away the world's largest empire without a shot being fired (in most cases!) . During this interview Anne has mis-stated Putin's War Aims. Putin does not want to invade & occupy Ukraine. He merely wants to stop it joining both NATO & the Empire of the EU. Failing to understand Putin is a serious mis-calculation. But at least Anne admits in the interview she failed to see War coming even though almost anyone could have predicted it. Long before Putin came to Power. I'm not quite sure how Anne managed to win the Pulitzer Prize. I'll guess I will have to read her books.

      Do not hold your breath for it.... And for the end of Europe, people can thank European leaders, countless mistakes throughout the last century, attacks and war on family, religion, illegal immigration, Europe's double standards and profound hypocrisy. We can add illegal wars, Europe's support and involvement in genocides, exploitation of resources of former colonies. What Europe achieved in the last 400 years or so, was through the war, pillaging, extortion, genocide, blackmailing, and culturocides. Now, Europeans are afraid because there is a new guy in town who is stronger, does not allow Europe to continue with bullying others, more just, and who adheres to international laws. Main problems of current day Europe are lack of resources to continue existing way of living. Europe is overpopulated, family bonds are severely weakened, and so many of European countries rely of cheap labor, cheap gas, oil, and cheap materials for their industrial complexes. No more. And to top it off, there are millions of illegal immigrants who are not bending to assimilate into European culture and lifestyle. I agree that this is the end of Europe as we know it, but disagree on who is responsible for it. As the old saying goes: "when you play with fire, you get burned."

      There was no treaty preventing East European countries from joining NATO. On the other hand, countries like Poland and the Baltics were begging to join, and why should Russian paranoia supersede the security of East European countries?
      In fact, Russian "security" concerns were always an excuse to dominate their neighbors. Look at how the Russians left their entire NATO border undefended because they have to send soldiers to Ukraine.

USA also has some basic respect for people from other nations - not nearly enough but still a little bit.
      Russia is purely a destructive force. It's ruled by a small megalomaniac clique with no checks and balances and with no respect or regard whatsoever for the rest of the people in the world.

Russia could not have objected to that in the same way as the expansion of NATO, so that would have thwarted Putins expansion plans much more effectively than the eastern expansion of NATO that actually happened.

As we keep seeing, nobody wants to start a war and will bend over backwards to find excuses not to start one. Russia could likely pick off the Baltics, and nobody in the rest of the bloc would lift a military finger - just call for talks, negotiations, etc. Mind you, I'm not entirely sure NATO would behave any differently.

      The problem is that many of these states like Latvia, Moldova etc know Russian and Putin well and have never trusted their intentions. The only safe place to secure freedom was in a US backed NATO.
      The problem with your analysis is that you believe NATO is the real problem….its not. The real problem is having a prosperous, free state next door that gives the lie to a failed gangster state and more likely caused a popular uprising.
      All NATO did was mean that Putin couldn’t change this by force….he has got to Ukraine and others before a NATO secured democracy could hold sway.
